Should the print company I use be able to change a file to spot color for me?

I recently sent a document in to a major print company to have a folder printed.  The document was created in Illustrator using only two colors. They said they could not print it because it was still more than two colors and that I needed to change it to a two color document using Pantone Spot Color.
I've never had to do that for a print company before but I've also never had a two color project before. I opened the file back up and selected my objects and "recolored" the work and deleted all the swatches aside from the two colors I needed that were now Pantone Spot Color (HSB). It literally took me 2 minutes.
The reason I am asking is because they pretty much said that I don't know what I'm doing, which to a designer is completely insulting.  We all do new things from time to time but that is an insult. Shouldn't they, a large print company with years of experience, know how to do this for me? They had the original design file.. Maybe they don't know what they are doing?
Any clarity on as to why I needed to do it and not them is greatly appreciated.  Also.. any direction as the best way to use spot color over cmyk is appreciated too.

...which to a designer is completely insulting...
What's so special about "a designer"?
Prior to the mid 1980s, designers could get away with prima Donna attitudes, because they (or their employers) were paying pre-press "color houses" around $350 per hour to tweak colors to sooth their oh-so-erudite discernment and hyper-developed color sensitivities, and to gain reimbursement for the $100 per plate lunches on proof-check days.
That all changed when designers (and their employers) got tired of paying those fees and took on the responsibility for the technical side of assembling their designs into something printable. That was the so-called "desktop revolution" and "revolution" was not a bad word for it. It turned a huge industry on its head. Color houses which didn't adopt PostScript devices and workflows were soon dropping like flies--and so were designers who didn't climb down off their lofty pedestals and buckle down to learning the technical realities of what they were doing.
Don't be insulted, but the simple fact is, you still don't know what you're doing if you think converting any given process color job to a two-spot job is "just a couple of minutes' work." Only in the very simplest designs would it be as simple as re-defining a couple of process Swatches as spot color Swatches.
In Illustrator in particular, doing so won't even work if the original Swatches were not originally defined as Global Swatches.
If those two process Swatches were used in any Blends, converting them to spot will likely not update the intermediate steps of the Blend. In earlier versions of Illustrator, the same problem applied to grads.
You can often get away with not having properly trapped the file with process swatches, because there are potentially four component inks which may be shared between adjacent different-color objects. Spot inks are not so forgiving. Trapping is essential if the two spot colors touch.
So you really expect a printer to just have a policy to do that for you? And thereby bear responsibility for anything they may misinterpret or overlook that may cause a registration sliver on press and thereby loose every bit of profit on the printing (which these days is cut-throat competitive)?
No. It's your responsibility to build the file correctly. The printing houses I use know better. They know I would have a coniption fit if I ever caught them modifying one of my files. They know they are to return any problem file to me for correction.

I have problems with uploading images to my internet printing company when  the images have been manipulated through CS6 and  i have saved images as jpeg  the printer company tell me they are not j peg,

Save/Export them as JPG. Photoshop defaults to PSD, so make sure you select JPG and not just rename the file to .jpg.
There are two ways to save them as JPG: Regular Save as option or Save for Web & Devices
    Take your pick.

That would indicate an issue with the local network, not internet. This can impact devices differently and will likely be more obvious on a streaming only device.
If you are on wifi try ethernet
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
Go to istumbler, netstumbler or similar to get a report of the network, look for signal strength and noise.

If the Mac use Lion (10.7) you can use Airdrop for that.
With Mac's not using Lion you may set up a computer to computer (ad hoc) connection.

My printer died and I need a printer that is compatable with OS 9.1/9.2.  Some printers say they are compatible with OS 9.1/9.2 but do they need a driver or is it included with the install disk that comes with the printer?

As long as the printer is accurately described as being compatible with OS 9.1/9.2, if it needs to have software (such as drivers) installed that software should either be included (usual) or downloadable from the net(usually from the manufacyrer's website).
Not all non-Apple printers need drivers installed. Some, such as many Postscript ones that connect via ethernet, are quite comfortable using the LaserWriter 8 printware that's part of OS 9. Some of those, though, may need to have a model-specific PPD (Postscript Printer Description) installed, a small document that informs the printware of the capabilities of the printer.

  • Where should the print server be?

    Hello all!
Right now we have a cluster with two nodes for SAP (Node1: SAP & SAP PRD / Node2: Database) and all printers are installed on a different standard file server. Last week we realized that the file server is not the right place for SAP printer. If someone restarts the file server he unwillingly stops all SAP printing jobs. So we have two options now:
    a) reconfigure the file server as a cluster with two nodes to get high-availability
    b) put the printers on one of the SAP cluster nodes
Our system partner said we shouldn´t install the printers on the SAP system, it could slow it down too much. But I don´t think they thought about the two nodes. Would there be enough performance on one of the nodes. Maybe the printers could run on the database node or on the apllication node. How do you use printers and their queues? Or is
    c) a dedicated print-server (as a two-node cluster)
a better idea? Thanks for any ideas

    Hi Peter,
You have not given much info so I will have to make some assumptions
For printing, SAP firsts stores the data in the database via the spool work process then sends it off depending on the configuration of the printer access method. For local printing the data is then passed on to the spooler of your operating system where it is queued on the file system.
If you attach a printer directly to your database or dialog(application) instance(in SAP we call them instances not nodes then that means the management of your prints would also reside on the same system which is probably not a good idea especially if you start having problems with the printer. Also, you would be adding additional IO(through transferring data to file system spooler) and storage to the system which you probably could do without. Additional processing would also be required for managing the queued data. So yes, your supplier is correct in this case especially if your print jobs are large ones at times.
Personally, I would go for your final option c) but a) should also do fine.
    Regards,
    Nelis

  • How do I set the print preference to use black ink only?

Despite having a color printer, I want to print in grayscale , black ink only, by default

That depends on your printer and the software that came with the printer. You can consult your printer manual or the online site for your printer manufacturer.
Generally, to change for the '''current session only''', File > Print, click Properties, in the new window see what options are offered. Take special note whether there is an option to use black cartridge only.
To change for '''all future sessions''', click (Windows) Start > Settings > Printers and Faxes, click you printer from the list, in the new window, click Printer > Printing Preferences. You will see the same window as in the instructions for '''current session only''' above, see what options are offered and look for use black cartridge only option. You may need to restart your computer. Test by printing one page that contains colored text or elements.

  • The printer we have uses black number 27

the printer we have is a HP OFFICE JET xi all in one printer  it uses either black number 27 or 56. it uses color 22 and is suppose to be able to use photo 58 ink cartridges. put when we put in the photo 58 cartridge . do the alignment and try to print it does not recognize that the photo cartridge is in the machine. i tried taking out the color cartridge but it then says it need that cartridge but back in. the photo 58 cartridge goes in the same spot as the black cartridge so i can't leave that one in. i have now opened three packages of photo 58 ink cartridges (at different times lately) and non have worked.  this is very expensive.  i have cleaned the contact as described but that doesn't sem to be the problem since the black works fine could someone help with this issue. ps i really like my hp products.

What printer model? (There are many different Officejet NNNNxi models....)
Are there any messages on the computer when the photo cartridge is installed?  It is true that the photo and color cartridges must be used together.
