Should We Assist with Class Assignments?

My answer is no. What is yours?

I also think this is something everyone can decide for themselves.
I tend to help if I think I can (with a limited amount of time).
This helping can take many forms. Sometimes it is code with explanation. Sometimes it is just explanation with pointers. Sometimes it is "reconsider your approach". Of course, teaching is a very big part of helping.
There are several types of situations when I will not help or stop helping. Here are a few things that turn me off:
posters that copy and paste homework assignments and put zero effort in properly explaining what their problem is, or what they are concerned about. In my experience, those posters are not only lazy when posting, but also very ungrateful (they typically
don't thank anyone for responding, don't indicate what helped or didn't help, and never mark a correct answer)
posts that start or finish with "urgent" or "help me now", accompanied with a work assignment that they are paid to do, or accompanied with problems that don't seem to have any urgency at all. These also tend to become abandoned threads pretty quickly
questions that were asked by the exact same poster a few days before, that got good answered in those earlier thread(s). Often, this is the category where the poster is looking for you to do his/her job, instead of learning to do it themselves.
posters that don't respect the advice of experts / MVPs, that don't respect that all contributions are done by volunteers. This includes the category of posters that believe that they are entitled to an answer, and the category of posters that is not satisfied
with the SQL Server product, and tries to "shoot the messenger".

• Should I start with Entity Object or Java Class Diagram ??

Hi,
I come to J2EE / OO application development from non-oo programming world. I am still confused about what step-by-step development approach should I take ?
Should I :
- start with creating Entity Object from available database table ?
- should I start with Java class diagram, followed by generating database tables, then create EO from it ?
Could anybody please help me, what best practice step by step development approach should I take ?
Is there any white paper / docs about this ?
Thank you for your help,
Krist

Krist,
If you are not from the OO world then you may be interested in this new site on OTN (http://otn.oracle.com/formsdesignerj2ee) There is a workshop that starts by looking at an existing datamodel and builds up from there.
If you are starting from nothing, you can indeed start higher at the Class Model level.
I recently started discussing data modeling on my blog (http://www.groundside.com/blog/content/SueHarper/) and there are some very good comments(feedback from readers) that may possibly be useful to you.
If you are new to the UML modeling world, I recommend you read two very good papers by Jan Kettenis on OTN (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/jdev/collateral/collateral10g.html) They are Getting Strted with UML Class modeling and Getting Started with UML Use Case Modeling.
Shay pointed you to Toplink. There are a lot of resources on OTN for Toplink, including tutorials.
Personally? I think if you have time, and if you can, start with a Class Model and perhaps a Use Case model, then you can start planning your application development from a solid base.
Regards
Sue Harper

• For WebLogic 5.1, where should I put my class files for my JavaBeans?

With JBuilder4, I have built an application with JSP and a few Java Beans (Those JavaBeans are instantiated in those JSP files). There are no EJBs. The package name is called 'onlinetrade'. I have tested the application on JBuilder's web server, it works pretty well.
Now I am moving this application to WegLogic 5.1. I have encountered a problem with WebLogic 5.1
and do not know where I should place my JavaBean class files --
Originally, the JSP files for my application are in package path-- ..onlinetrade\jsp
and the class files for my beans are in the package path -- ..onlinetrade\jsp\bean\*.class
Now, with WebLogic 5.1,
1) I have put my JSP files in
C:\weblogic\myserver\public_html\onlinetrade\jsp
2) I have created subdirectory and put my bean class files in
C:\weblogic\myserver\classfiles\onlinetrade\jsp\bean
When I started weblogic and the first page - login.jsp page can be up and accessed. But when I login and forward to another JSP page called 'controller.jsp', where a bean is instantiated, I got the following error
Compilation of 'C:\weblogic\myserver\classfiles\jsp_servlet\_onlinetrade\_jsp\__controller.java' failed:
C:\weblogic\myserver\classfiles\jsp_servlet\_onlinetrade\_jsp\__controller.java:210: cannot access jsp_servlet._onlinetrade._jsp.registerBean
probably occurred due to an error in /onlinetrade/jsp/controller.jsp line 53:
registerBean registerBeanInstance = new registerBean();
I know the javac is working, and a java file is created upon the JSP page, but the problem is -- the bean class files cannot be found!!!
Where should I create the package path and put my bean class file so that my JSP pages can pick them up?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thanks.

• I am having a little trouble with classes

I can not figure out what is wrong or missing from this code because I keep getting "declare in file" error code
this is the simple code
import java.util.Scanner; //program uses class Scanner
import java.text.NumberFormat;//used to format currency
import java.util.Locale;
public class Employee
public Employee();
//main method begins execution of Java application
//create Scanner to obtain input from command window
Scanner input=new Scanner (System.in);
//varibles declared
String Emp_name;//Stores employee name
double Hours_worked;///Stores hours worked
double PayRate;//Stores PayRate
System.out.print("Enter Employee;s name:");//prompt
Emp_name=input.nextLine();//read employee's name entered
System.out.print("Enter the pay rate of the Employee:");//prompt
PayRate=input.nextDouble();//read the payrate of employee
System.out.print("Enter the Employee's Hours worked:");//prompt
Hours_worked=input.nextDouble();//read hourlyrate of pay entered by user
NumberFormat nf=NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(Locale.US);
System.out.printIn("Employee" + Emp_name);//display employee_Name
System.out.printf("Employee's Pay: $" +nf.format(Hours_worked*PayRate));//display GPA
}

masterbuild,
Firstly, post your code between code tags.
... your code goes here ...
so it looks like thisdouble check it using preview before you commit the post.
Now, Please don't be offended, That's not a bad first try, but it's just all wrong, which is part of the learning process.
Here's a list the problems I can see with that code, and what to do about them... if you address these problems you should end up with a working program.
Number 1
public class Employee
public Employee();
//main method begins execution of Java application
{As The Pair of Condiments and The Sick Brainiac have already stated... lose the semicolon!... it should look like this...
public class Employee
      public Employee() {
Number 2
//main method begins execution of Java application
What main method? I don't see any main method... Where's your main method? It should look like this
      public void main(String[] args) {
        Scanner input = new Scanner(System.in);
        System.out.print("employee's name : ");
        String name = input.nextLine();
        System.out.print("hourly rate : ");
        double hourlyRate = input.nextDouble();
        System.out.print("hours worked : ");
        double hoursWorked = input.nextDouble();
        System.out.printf("%s's gross pay is $%s\n", name, NUMBER_FORMATTER.format(hoursWorked*hourlyRate));
      }* The convention is to use camelCase (hump in the middle) for variable names, and CapitalCase for class names. See http://java.sun.com/docs/codeconv/
Number 3
The numberFormatter would best be declared as a class attribute, so you can reuse whenever you print a currency amount... as in...
public class Employee
      private static final NumberFormat NUMBER_FORMATTER = NumberFormat.getCurrencyInstance(Locale.US);
      public Employee() {
        ....Also... these three comments worry me a bit...
// Stores employee name
// Stores hours worked
// Stores PayRate
None of these values are being "stored". These three values are local variables, which exist only while the method (actually block) in which they are declared is executing... after that they are "forgotten". To a programmer the word "store" implies that the values are being persisted in a file, or database... that is the values are being stored in any fashion for reuse by a subsequent execution of this program, or indeed another program. I think it's just that you don't know the lingo yet, but I just wanted to be sure that you know that these values will be forgotten as soon as the main method is finished.
Cheers. Keith.

• Upgrading: Migration Assistant with FireWire or Time Machine Restore?

Hello,
I recently ordered a new Black Penryn MacBook to replace my 17" iMac. Would you recommend using the Migration Assistant with FireWire or a Time Machine restore in order to copy all of my data to the MacBook? I have the option to do both, but am unsure of which would be the best. Is the time machine restore more suited to restore a failed drive as opposed to facilitating a data transfer between two machines? Finally, regarding either of the transfer options, will there be any issues with keychain or application data that I should be aware of? Thanks for your help!

Those are two of the option presented by Migration Assistant. I think the end result will be the same. If I was doing it, I'd use the FireWire method, just because it's coming directly from the source instead of through a backup archive structure.

• It should be interface or class ?

Friends,
I have a major entity in my application. That entity is, u can say, heart of the what application does.
Actually, clients can open up a case with supplier and that case is my main entity.
Now that case can be of any type out of some 7 types. And all of them have some data common say around 40% data is common. and remaining varies from type to type.
Now, my problem is, this main entity class should have any interfact on the top to depict common methods ? I feel that, it should be an abstract class with these common methods being abstract methods. Well, we have abstract class also, but it is used to store only common variables, not methods. Moreover we have impl classes also.
What you guys say ? Is there any design principle, which makes this interface must ??
Thanks.

Make it both. Follow the lead of the java.util.List and java.util.AbstractList.

• Should I bother with Aperture

I'm a avid iphoto user and have about 20+ gigs of photos on my MBpro. I don't presently own a camera that shoots raw but expect to buy one in the next year or two. A photographer is going to give us a thousand pics from our recent wedding weekend and I wanted to know whether I should ask for them in raw or jpeg. I know iphoto can import raw but is it worth it to buy Aperture to possibly edit the pics? I fiddle with the histogram settings in iphoto quite a bit.
Second question: is Aperture easy to administer? We are running out of room on our hardrive and will probably have to store some photos on an external drive. Is this complicated? Time Machine has nearly filled our 300gig external drive and so we will probably need to buy a larger external drive soon. Should I stick with iphoto or progress to Aperture?
Any advice would be great. thx

By all means get your wedding pix in RAW format. In fact the photog almost surely has the pix in RAW+JPEG, so he/she should be willing to deliver in both formats at no cost difference. In addition to allowing huge latitude in post-process editing, RAW captures contain more image data.
I strongly recommend that every digital photog with adequate computer hardware first spend $33 and work through the tutorial CD Apple Pro Training Series: Aperture 1.5 (Apple Pro Training) by Orlando Luna and Ben Long (Paperback - Oct 18, 2006). Have the CD and a MacIntel with minimum 2 GB RAM (preferably more) prior to ordering the Aperture trial so you don't waste time of the 30 day trial. Note that the value is in the tutorial, not in using the book as a manual.
IMO trying Aperture without the tutorial's guidance is a waste of time, leading to bad habits and/or just not getting it.
Note that you probably should ignore Shell's confusing post above; IMO Shell is just confused.
When you do go to buy a DSLR, note that there is always a delay from the time any brand new DSLR is introduced until various software supports the new model's RAW conversions. Different RAW converters variously show up sooner/later, and different RAW converters work better/worse with different models. E.g. Adobe's Nikon D300 conversions are out now but apparently do not do a very good job.
Typically the time frame is 1-3 months, so the very earliest adopters of new models may have to wait a month or two to convert their RAW images. All good DSLRs have a RAW+JPEG capture choice, however, so even the earliest adopters can manage images immediately.
Safely storing 20,000+ images using a laptop as a base is complicated. No way around that reality. Aperture provides several mechanisms (vaults, projects, etc.) that assist in the the process, and there are regularly threads here on the topic.

• I want to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard. When trying to back-up to a WD 1 TB external drive, the back-up process stalls at about 4 GB. Grateful for any clues to assist with the backup issue please.

I want to upgrade from OS X 10.5.8 to Snow Leopard, then to Lion. When trying to back-up to a WD 1 TB external drive, the back-up process stalls at about 4 GB download. I would be very grateful for any clues to assist with the back-up process please.

That disk is very probably formated as FAT 32, the normal format for PCs. FAT 32 cannot support files larger than 4 GB; also, it corrupts some types of Mac OS files. If you want to securely backup your mac files, you must have a disk prepared for Mac OS.
Therefore, open Disk Utility, choose again 1 partition for your external disk and, under Options, GUID partition map (it may also be a boot disk for an intel mac), then format it as Mac OS Extended Journaled. Y0u are done.
If you want to exchange data with PCs, you should chose Master Boot REcord and NTFS format, for this you must use a additional utility like NTFS-3G. But note that mac files may also get corrupt in NTFS format.

I wonder if the disk being referred to is actually your iPod which is not plugged in. Maybe something has stuck thinking the iPod should be there.
Try completely removing all the iTunes related programs according to this method.

Restart you PC and see if startup improves.
If it doesn't improve you need to consider the possibility that there is something else going on.

• Assistance with export query

Greetings,
I am hoping to get some assistance with what I am thinking should be a simple content export. I am running UCM 11g with Folders_g. I have some root folder named rootfolder which has 30 or so content items directly in it and then 100 or so sub-folders. I have already migrated all the subfolders with their content successfully. Now I only need to export the remaining 30 or so items directly in the rootfolder. This sounds simple, but when I select that root folder using Folder Structure Archive, even though I do not place a check mark in any of the subfolders, the resultant export took 4 hours had over 160,000 items. I am only expecting these 30 or so items. How can I form a query to get only these? Idea i am thinking of is maybe to query for content which has parent folder id of rootfolder?
Thank you in advance for any help,
-Kaycee

Thank you Jonathan - I wasn't receiving email notifications for this thread, so i wasn't aware that you had replied.
After "playing" around, I did end up with a successful export of the source folder's 30 items by using this query: xCollectionID = valueforfolder and dReleaseState = 'Y'
This did work, but there still remains for me some confusion around the use of Folder Structure Archive. I guess I was expecting that when using Folder Archive Configuration only, by checking the box of my intended parent folder and no other sub-folders under that box, that it should have exported it's 30 content items. And not the content items of the +/-100 sub-folders. I did not expect to have to add a content export query to refine/achieve the result. Simply, when using folder structure archive, shouldn't the export of content only pertain to the folder's checkbox you have marked?
Thanks again,
Kaycee
