Show alert in row of Report Region

Hi,
I've a report region containing say 30 rows and columns:
1. Error_reason
2. Error_code
3. Action (apex_item.select_list values 'No Action','Incorrect','Valid')
If 'Valid' is chosen then Error_code will be processed i.e. record will move to master table.
Now if already this Error_code is present in master table there is a validation process which runs when clicked SUBMIT and should show an alert showing a red cross next to the column Action for that row or mark the row red.
How can it be implemented?
Can I use apex_item.text(value 'X') with hidden=false from validation process where error_code is present in master table?
Please suggest ASAP.

Why do you need in the Submit processing when you can identify them when the report displays? You could even suppress the duplicated rows from displaying !
SELECT ERROR_REASON, ERROR_CODE, ACTION,
decode( (select count(*) from ERR_MASTER B where B.ERROR-CODE = A.ERROR_CODE)
        ,0,null,'<img src="#IMAGE_PREFIX#FNDCANCE.gif" ALT="DUPLICATE" />') "Status"
FROM <ERROR_ENTRY_TABLE> A
WHERE ....Of course, you have to change the table and columns names in the above query to match what you have. Its the DECODE that is the point I am trying to convey.
Now go to Report Attributes and change the Status Columns Type to Standard Report Column.
