"Show Duplicate Frames" bug

... does anyone know if this bug has been fixed in FCP 6 ...
i just started a project and noticed my asst. had the "show duplicate frames" on and it spooked me ...

... there were issues (i think i 4 or 4.5) with it making sequences unworkably sluggish if the "show duplicate frames" option was chosen; when it was turned on it meant lots of waiting for the beachball whenever clips or cuts were moved and it was essentially unusable because of this.

Hi everyone,
I can't seem to make the 'Show Duplicate Frames' option work. I've got it ticked in the timeline settings, but nothing seems to happen. I've checked to make sure I'm changing the settings of the timeline I'm working on, and trashed prefs, but I still can't get the dang thing to work.
Any ideas?

I'm guessing you did a capture HDV as AIC or ProRes kind of thing when you brought your footage in? ... the point being that that creates media without a proper TC track nor any valid Reel # identification. If the clip does not have a proper Reel ID / TC track then it has no way of knowing that the portions of clips you are using are duplicates.
Try adding a Reel ID to those source clips and then see if the Duplicate Frames function suddenly kicks in

"Show Duplicates" doesn't seem to really work

I have a huge library and know for a fact there are several duplicate songs in there. However, when I select, "Show Duplicates" from the File menu, iTunes does a horrible job! Tons of songs in there are not even close. Am I the only one that is seeing this?

I think in LR2 it used to compare the shooting date/time and filename to catch duplicates, didnt it ?
No, it didn't. Just tested and it did the same.
I will report the bug.
Technical details: The AgLibraryFile.importHash field does not get updated when importing from catalog. The field stays null, which causes subsequent duplicate tests to fail.

Final Cut Problem - Duplicate frames when using add composite

I have a problem with Final cut hopefully someone will be able to help.
Clip A & Clip B on one layer and Clip C on another, being used as a transition between the two. Composite mode 'Add' being used on Clip C
When Clip C overlaps both clips in the timeline it causes duplicate frames in Clip B during the 'transition'. If I move it to just overlap Clip A the duplicate frames disappear.
Any thoughts appreciated

OK, I follow that up to "adding my compositing clip as a transition between clips". The compositing clip is the film burn effect that you have built as a separate clip?

Upon adding my composition clip, frames from the end of the first clip are added to the start of the second creating a 'one cycle loop' regardless of whether these clips are joined (as shown in my screen shot) or moved apart.
Meaning if you separate the two clips, so that there is an actual gap between them, you still see frames from the first clip where there is only gap on the track below?
If i move the composition clip so that it only overlaps one of the clips ( so not really a transition anymore) the extra frames disappear. Move it back and they appear
Meaning if you place the film burn composite over a clip without a transition, it works as expected?
My only question is if, when you adjust the clips by separating them to get your desired spacing, is there really a gap between the first and second clip, or do you drag the end of the first clip to fill in the space created by the gap? That would cause the frames at the beginning of clip 2 to be repeated as they are being shown on the end of the previous (now extended) clip.

Duplicate frame problem

Just editing another multiclip sequence (oh, the joy) and I'm having some strange behaviour occur.
I have some B-roll material which I'm using to augment the multiclip material and it all plays fine in the viewer.
So I trim my clip, drop it in the timeline, and on playback it duplicates random frames so I effectively get a jump/dropped frame effect.
When I double click this trimmed clip from the timeline into the viewer, the duplicate frame is now part of the clip! If i go back to master clip and re-trim and insert, it duplicates a different frame. If I mess around with in and out points on the timeline, it again jumps/duplicates in a slightly different place! The master clip remains fine, until I trim it and add it to the timeline, then the duplicate frame becomes 'part of' the clip.
Never seen this before, can only think it's due to the multiclip underneath on track 1. Any suggestions?

Just been delving further in...
When I double click the problem clip into the viewer from the TL it does have duplicate frames!
the frame counter will show: 10,11,12,12,14 etc and it happens in different places depending on where the clip is trimmed.
The actual sequence is that a frame is skipped, then to make up for it, it seems to hold onto the very next one so it looks very wrong on playback.
I just wish one day I could use multiclip without ridiculous workarounds.

Pal transfers and duplicate frames

here in china... editing a 35mm feature.... editing in beijing.... shoot is in henan provence and the lab and transfer house is in shanghai...
the transfer house is transfering to dvcam with the following settings: timecode @ 25fps and telecine or "tk" speed @ 25fps... they are doing the adding one frame deal... and not the speeding by 4%
when i conform from 25 to 24 in fcp 5 i see a duplicate frame every 25th frame... the transfer house tells me this is normal...
trying to confirm that this should be the norm.... also hearing from other editors when doing the 4% speed up method, no dup frames are seen...

things are a lot clearer now...
to sum up: pal telecine
tk speed @ 25fps = the 24@25 method (speeding up 4.166%)
tk speed @ 24fps = the 24&1 method (adding a field every 12 frames)
with the 24@25 method - no dup frames will occur after conforming footage
with the 24&1 method - dup frames will occur every 25th frame after conforming footage
it was also important to get the tk speed and the methods correctly... without the flex file, cinema tools asks the tk speed setting - i didn't wanted to add more problems with wrong tk setting...
it was encouraging that my test of a one minute dialogue sequence had matching in/out tc and kk numbers between original telecined dvcam and conformed fcp media file...
however, i'm thinking the best thing is to have the transfer house re-do the enitre show with the 24@25 method... i really don't like the idea of seeing dup frames especially after confirming... fortunately, the transfer house had provided me with several different 1.85 letterbox settings so they need to redo most of the footage anyway... go figure...
just had a thought - is it possible that some telecine machines can not perform the 24@25 method....
as you had mentioned before, going the route with the 24&1 method will be problematic at best...
do you know if avid supports the 24&1 method...

Duplicate Frames question

I've noticed that even when activated, the duplicate frames feature does not always show when I've placed the same shots in the timeline more than once. In reviewing old posts, I see that you need to give the clip a reel # and maintain it's original timecode in order for the duplicate feature to work.
My question is....what about exports of sequences you make in FCP as quicktimes?
I would have thought that if I export a timeline as a quicktime, then bring it back into FCP and use
it as a source clip, THEN it would be able to tell when I was duplicating frames from it's own exported quicktime, but that doesn't seem to work.
Are there some special characteristics or settings you need to export out as in order to make the
duplicate frames feature work, or is it only possible with raw video captured via a timecode source?

Exporting a file and expecting it to show as duplicate frames will never work.
FCP and the Finder see it as a entirely different file, even if it has the exact same content and name as something in your project.
The file's "Diplayed Name" that you see in Finder and FCP is not the same as the "Unique file ID" assigned by the Finders directory management system.
For instance, if you call your file "My Movie Clip 03", the directory assigns something else, along the lines of "6FDD6793355D848D" for it's own internal use. If you export "My Movie Clip 03" it will have a different unique ID.
While this may appear to present a problem for you in finding your duplicate frames, it also allows two or more files or folders to have the same name, so long as they occupy different sub-directories. Project folder A and project folder B can both contain a sub folder named "DVD Assets" for example.

How can I delete all duplicate frames in a clip?

I'm working with footage captured from a game engine on a Mac. When the graphics processing get's intense the graphics card struggles to keep up. What ends up happening is that the card continues to output every frame (e.g., it does not skip frames) but is only able to do so at a reduced pace - say, five frames a second. The screen cap software just captures at a predetermined rate - say, thirty frames per second. The result is that the captured clip has loads of sequential duplicate frames. The good thing is that since no frames were skipped you get a buttery-smooth playback if you manually (tediously) remove every single duped frame.
So, is there any tool that will automate this process? There is a script that does exactly what I need called Duplicate Frame Remover available at Duplicate Frame Remover - aescripts + aeplugins - aescripts.com but sadly, this script is not compatible with After Effects CC. Can anyone think of any other option for After Effects or Premiere? Ideally this would cut out the audio for the duped frames as well.

The frame rate varies depending on what's happening in the simulation, and there is a clock in the scene, so I have verified that when you remove duplicate frames manually you get a clip where one second=one second and perfectly smooth playback. I'm running dual GTX 980s in SLI, so faster card isn't really feasible. In any case the capture is of an intense physics simulation and I've since determined that the graphics aren't the bottleneck, rather the CPUs are - and those are equally muscular, so not a lot of room for improvement there either. Anyway, as I said above, a tool exists, it's just not compatible. I was just hoping someone else had picked up the gauntlet and written a similar script that works with CC.

Sounds like a good plan, you can never be to safe and having a second External HD is safer than one.
The only thing that I would do different, is setup the 3T as my TimeMachine Backup and then erase and move my Photos, Videos and perhaps even iTunes Media to the 1T. That way you will have room to backup both the Internal Hard Drive and the 1T External Hard Drive to the 3T using TimeMachine.
Take your time, study and use the > Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions if you get stuck or aren't sure how to make the move.

I have a new computer and I'm trying to reload my library and my playlists. I also have a new iPhone 5 and I'm trying to load that too. I'm getting duplicates of everything in my library.
