Shutdown the database
Can I shutdown the Database automatically? We're thinking shutdown it making a shell in UNIX. Programming the commands of the server manager in a shell and executing whith the crontab command.
But it was not the right way!

OK! Here's the point
In our Business Continuity Plan we have the purpose of replicate the productive data in a recovery server. To do it, we shutdown the database after make a copy of the productive data. But we do it manually instead automatically. And we ´re looking for a better way to do it.

Yes! Let me tell you that this is only a test with a few lines.
The body of shell is:
ORACLE_SID = SICSDES; export ORACLE_SID
svrmgrl
connect internal
shutdown immediate
exit
And there's not error; the command svrmgrl operates correct. but after that the next commands are not recognized for the shell

Shuts down a currently running Oracle instance, optionally closing and dismounting a database.
Terms
Refer to the following list for a description of each term or clause:
ABORT
Proceeds with the fastest possible shutdown of the database without waiting for calls to complete or users to disconnect.
Uncommitted transactions are not rolled back. Client SQL statements currently being processed are terminated. All users currently connected to the database are implicitly disconnected and the next database startup will require instance recovery.
You must use this option if a background process terminates abnormally.
IMMEDIATE
Does not wait for current calls to complete or users to disconnect from the database.
Further connects are prohibited. The database is closed and dismounted. The instance is shutdown and no instance recovery is required on the next database startup.
NORMAL
NORMAL is the default option which waits for users to disconnect from the database.

TRANSACTIONAL [LOCAL]
Performs a planned shutdown of an instance while allowing active transactions to complete first. It prevents clients from losing work without requiring all users to log off.
No client can start a new transaction on this instance. Attempting to start a new transaction results in disconnection. After completion of all transactions, any client still connected to the instance is disconnected. Now the instance shuts down just as it would if a SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE statement was submitted. The next startup of the database will not require any instance recovery procedures.
The LOCAL mode specifies a transactional shutdown on the local instance only, so that it only waits on local transactions to complete, not all transactions. This is useful, for example, for scheduled outage maintenance.
Usage
SHUTDOWN with no arguments is equivalent to SHUTDOWN NORMAL.
You must be connected to a database as SYSOPER, or SYSDBA. You cannot connect via a multi-threaded server. For more information about connecting to a database, see the CONNECT command earlier in this chapter.

exec(): 0509-036 Cannot load program oracle<SID> because of the following errors:
0509-150 Dependent module libjox9.a(shr.o) could not be loaded.
0509-022 Cannot load module libjox9.a(shr.o).
0509-026 System error: A file or directory in the path name does not exist
R3 is terminated correctly by using the command stopsap and also I am able to shutdown the database normally by using the SQL command.

I will test start/stop manually later; because the system is active and used by the users for testing purpose (not production).
Yes, LIBPATH is the same for both users.
The ownership/permisssion for the both files is

I compared with production, it seems ok.
I started DBCheck by using the transaction DB13 and also it failed due to same errors.

Takes more time to start & shutdown the database
Hi All,
I have created a database in oracle9i by following manual steps. Every thing was created successfully and am able to start the database and shutdown also.
but the problem is while giving the startup command it takes more time to start the database and the same during the shutdown. So anyone help me..

problem is while giving the startup command it takes more time to start the >database and the same during the shutdownHow have you compared? Could it be O/S resources, installation of additional software; you have not mentioned the O/S and complete version of your database.

Thanks In Advance.The first place to check would probably be your alert log. You can usually find it here $ORACLE_BASE\admin\bdump and the file will be named alert_<SID>.log. If you cannot find the file here check the value of the BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST parameter.

hi,
i just installed oracle enterprise edition on my notebook for getting some experince with the ee. My first goal was to simply shutdown/startup my Database instance.
for that i logged into the web interface (sysdba) and used the shutdown button. i get asked for a host-id user/pwd and a database user/pwd. for the host-id pw i entered my windows login acc/pwd. and for the database-id my user "sys" with pw.
everytime i get the error "RemoteOperationException: ERROR: Invalid username and/or password". i gave alle admin db-users the same password ...so i am sure i used the correct one here - what am i doing wrong?
i am a bit confused that the error tells me someting about a remoteOperation? Everythin is running local on my notebook....
can someone help me? even the "oracle by example"-Documentation gives me no clue what to do.
thx for helpThe web interface, DB Console, requires both the host user name and password (username and password that you use to log on to you laptop) and database user with SYSDBA or SYSOPER privileges.
The username and password that you use to log into your laptop needs to be in the both in the Windows administrators group and the ORA_DBA group.
You can setup the preferred credentials in DB Console by clicking the Preferences link at the top of the page and then chose Preferred Credentials at the left. On the Prefered Credentials page you can test both the host and database username and password combinations.

Enterprise Manager is not able to connect to the database instance....
Hi all,
Currently i'm facing a big issue here.
I have install the Oracle 10g on Window 2003 SE.
And currently the Enterprise manager is not be able to conenct to the database and my database is still running.With my listener is up.
But from the Enterprise manager's it show that everythg is down.
and when i try to restart it,i ask for os id and password and dbuser and dbpassword.
frm the SQL plus,i can easily startup and shutdown the database.
So i would like to know i can rectify this problem.

And i would like to know how to set up the environment variable for Oracle_HOME and ORACLE_SID.
Please kindly assist me on this.Looking at the error message "The Network Adapter could not establish the connection" , It appears hostname and port may be incorrect. Review the targets.xml under E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\SAP_solman_SDB\emd and
emoms.properties under E:\oracle\product\10.2.0\db_1\SAP_solman_SDB\config folder to make sure host ( sap_solman) and port (1527) are correct.
As far as setting the environment variables goes, you can go to control panel -> system -> advanced -> environment variables and set the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID

Urgent: can not startup the database in unix server
hi...i am facing a treamendous problem...
to shutdown the database(unix environmment), I have connected through putty and from there in the sysdba login, I have given the command "SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE"
but after that suddenly the power failure occurred and my local machine from which i was accessing the unix server, got shutdown..
after the restart, when I am again accessing the putty and connected to the oracle11g server and from sysdba login, given the "STARTUP OPEN" command, then it is showing the error...

How to set the database in NOARCHIVELOG mode

I knewly joined this organization.
Our database is very small < 4GB data.
Database is running in ARCHIVELOG MODE.
since we are not keeping any physical backup, so I opted to run the datbase in NOARCHIVELOG mode.
For bringing the database in NOARCHIVE MODE, I simply changed the init.ora parameter LOG_ARCHIVE_START = FALSE and restart the database.
offcourse the archiving stopped, but to my strange after 30 to 40 minutes my all log files filled an error message is being displayed to the server, saying
log files are filled, waiting for the archiving, Oh my God, What has happened, All users came to my head, DATABASE HANGED, NOT RESPONSING.

WHAT FOR ALL LOG FILES WAITING?

Unable to restart the database
Hi,
I just shutdown the database and it seems to take a while, don't know if it's stuck or just takes awhile. I try to restart it in another session and get this error:
'ORA-01012: not logged on'

if the above not working Kill oracle process or Shut down database server (shutdown service before do that)We've seen no need for a shutdown abort. The oP was doing a normal shutdown, which was already pointed out, and will wait until connections voluntarily disconnect. Which will probably never happen. The previously suggested SHUTDOWN IMMEDIATE is the better solution until a problem with that is demonstrated. -

i shutdown the database on Sun solaris from telnet. On the middle the internet connection wa down. And when i connect again and try to start the database there is a error

i try to startup nomount and the message still come.

After shutdown the file sgadefSID.dbf should not be there in ORACLE_HOME\dbs directory.
But in our case this file was still there after shutdown we deleted this file and then using IPCRM command we deleted the process owned by oracle user .
to delete it need identifier number it can be find out by ipcs command.

How Do I Duplicate a NOARCHIVELOG to another server and change the database
I have two servers each with a different copy of the same database.. we'll call the database POPEYE
server A has a STAGE version of POPEYE that is in NOARCHIVELOG mode
server B has the PRODUCTION version of POPEYE
I need to get the database on server A and copy it to run next to the existing database on server B.
since they have the same name, i need to change the name to POPEYESTAGE when I move it over.
both running Windows Server 2008. both running Oracle 10g.
I tried shutting down the database on server A, copying over the files with a new PFile and ran the CREATE CONTROLFILE script into the trace and took out all the junk, but I cannot connect to execute it.
I copied all the files over and when I try to commect as sysdba using sqlplus i get TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.
i tried adding it to the listener and TNS names files, but it didnt work.
I'm trying RMAN now with some difficulty.

In the future, ALWAYS use COPY & PASTE so we can see what you do & how Oracle actually responds.There's nothing to copy paste, I clicked with my mouse and dragged to copy the files.
I obtained a CREATE CONTROLFILE script the standard way -- ALTER DATABASE BACKUP CONTROLFILE TO TRACE.
so here I stand with the script in hand. BUT, I cannot connect to the database to execute it, because I get the error I stated "TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified."

I'm trying RMAN now with some difficulty.I bet you did not bother to Read The Fine Manual.I took a course a week ago. I am reading the manual and following the instructions. Duplicating databases is not very clearly documented.
Plus it's a test database that the users turned into a production database, so it is in noarchivelog mode, so earlier I was not able to shutdown the database so RMAN could not back it up.
The situation I am dealing with with fairly obscure.

How to recovery the database from a complete backup
I have a 10.2.0.3 database with archive log enabled.
I do a cold backup of database every Sunday night.
I shutdown the database, copy all the database files, control files and redo logs to a backup disk.
Then the database started and running again.
I am trying to test my backup and make sure I can recovery the database to the most current stage using the Sunday backup and the archive logs.
for example: use the backup from 4/01/2012, recover the database to today 4/04/2012 9:00am.
What's the steps of doing this?
I tried to copy all the Sunday backup files to the correct location, start the database, the database is started successfully. However, I don't know how to apply the logs from since the Sunday backup upto now.

rman is your friend to do backups, restores and recovers of database.
to do a full recover of database, for example to do a test on your current test database (no in crash):
rman time:
startup nomount;
restore controlfile;
alter database mount;
sql now
select archivelog_change#-1 from v$database;
then go back to rman and do the following :
RMAN> run{
2> set until scn xxxxxx;
3> restore database;
4> recover database;
5> alter database open resetlogs;
6> }
**where xxxxx is the result of your sql query

Shutdown Oracle Database in MSCS Environment
Dear All,
We are facing problem regarding shutdown the oracle database in Cluster Environment. We have installed SAP HA on windows 2003 server and backend database is Oracle.
In order to configure the dataguard we have to create the control file from Primary Database for this purpose we have to shutdown and then startup the database in mount state.
But whenever i shutdown the database from SQL prompt by "shutdown immediate" command and see the status of
database it always remains in open state.
I have tried the following options as well but no success:-
Stop all the instances of SAP and then shutdown the database.
Shutdown the second node and then shutdown the database.
Brought offline the ORACLE<SID> group and then shutdown the database.

The above error message comes if Oracle Listener service is not running. Start Oracle TNS Listener service, if it is not running.
You can create control file while your Primary Database is ONLINE. Use the below mentioned command to create standby control file and use it for recovery at Standby database.
ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS '/path/to/controlfile.ctl';

our organization is having 10 DBA with sysdba priviladge. We are using UNIX operating system. At morning say for example if some one (SYSDBA user) shutdown the oracle database how other sysdba user trace the user who shutdown the database? the information i need is terminal from where oracle got shutdown and the username? You are right Sybrand, SYSDBA connections are always audited.
My answer was about enabling auditing to any connections, which may give informations about who access to the Database in general. And, this is true, it was not the scope of the OP question.
