Silly Question Regarding : Media browser

Hello,
I am sure it something simple, but I am stuck and I have done 3 hrs of searching, restarts and Preference kills.
• Share previews with iLife and iWork is checked in Aperture
• Aperture icon doesn't show up in the media browser
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
-J

Note, if you want to "trick" things like this, use a symbolic link, not an alias. Symbolic links ('man ln' from the command line) work for pretty much EVERYTHING like this... the OS really can't tell the difference except in a few cases.
Symbolic links are created ln -s /Volumes/ExternalDrive ./Directoryname
Or thereabouts... reading the man page is a good idea

  • Silly question regarding sol 8 containers and disk sizes

I've got what is probably just about the silliest question, but I can't seem to find an answer whilst searching around for the past couple of hours. Say I have 2 boxen, one is a sol 8 server and the other is a brand new install of sol 10/8. They have the exact same hardware, including disk size. If I want to turn the first box into a solaris 8 container running under the second, how do I reconcile the fact that the disk sizes are the same? The sol 8 box is only using, say, 25-30GB of the 72GB on the disk. Do I have to resize the slice into something smaller to enable it fit into a container on the second server? It would seem that is the case, but I didn't know if there was some magic I was not aware of. I've not done a ufsdump or flash archive before so I don't know if the 'empty' space on the disc will be disregarded, possibly allowing me to squeeze it onto my sol 10 server and allow me to resize it smaller in zfs. This topic isn't touched in all the tutorials I've read, so I assume it's either a completely retarded/braindead concern, or everyone always migrates these boxen onto servers with much more in the way of resources.
Sorry if I offended anyone with my ignorance ; P

No. Solaris8/9 containers make use the "branded zones" technology. But it's still the same thing and there's no "disk image", at least not like you might think of for VMware or Xen.
Now if you want to call a ufsdump or flash archive an "image", then that's fine. But you can see in either case, the free space or minor changes is size are irrelevant. You're just copying files. It's a system image, not a "disk image".
                      Installer Options :
                            Option          Description
-a filepath     Location of archive from which to copy system image.
Full flash archive and cpio, gzip compressed cpio,
bzip compressed cpio, and level 0 ufsdump are
supported. Refer to the gzip man page available in the
                                            SUNWsfman package.--

  • CRS Installation - Question regarding media pack

    Hi all,
I am waiting for the 10gR2 media pack to do a CRS install. When the media pack arrives, what CD/DVD should I start with? Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

You get separate DVD;s for CRS installtion and RDBMS installtion.
You need to first install CRS and then RDBMS.
Its worth looking Installtion guide for your respective OS from Oracle documentation.

  • Best practice question regarding media

Okay, I've finally decided to convert all of my old VHS and MiniDV tapes to .mov files so I can host them on my Plex server for family & friends across the country to be able to view them online.
All of these tapes contain various recordings that feature each of my children, family gatherings, vacations, holidays etc. As I recorded them, I basically would use a tape and fill it to completion and then move on to the next tape and fill it. So recordings were all chronological in time but were not separated in the areas mentioned above.
Any tips on how to ensure I don't miss using any footage and how to organize things in FCP? I envision importing a single .mov file from the tapes and then plan on extracting the individual clips for use in their separate areas. I'd like to have an event in FCP for each child, vacation etc. and then separate projects in each event to separate years, location etc.
Anyone else done something similar, any helpful hints etc? Thanks, daunting task but hopefully it'll be made easier with a good organized way to do it. Appreciate any advice!

I don't think there is a single solution that would apply to everyone.
If it were my project, I'd probably organize things chronologically – creating a folder for each year for the ingested files. Then I'd create separate libraries for each of those folders and then separate Events for themes like trips, milestones, etc. Then different projects for specific "episode's" (e.g,. "Jane's middeschool graduation").
I'm sure others will have other (and probably better) ideas.
    Good luck with your project.

  • Silly Question regarding extended desktop

I have just ordered a new 24" iMac however, the tech specs for the UK note:
+Support for external display in video mirroring mode+
Where as the US tech specs note:
+Support for extended desktop and video mirroring modes+
Which is correct? Does anyone from the UK have their aluminum iMac running in extended desktop mode?
I am upgrading from a white 20" and I have a second monitor as an extended display. I just want to make sure I do not lose this functionality.

All Intel iMac's will do extended desktop mode (by default) when you connect a second display. The next bullet says
"Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display, and up to a 30-inch display (2560 by 1600 pixels) on an external display"
so that basically says it will extend the desktop, since it would not support "full native resolution" up to 2560x1600, if it was simply mirroring the built-in 1920x1200 display.
The new iMacs have a Mini DisplayPort (instead of a mini-DVI port), so you will need a new adapter.

  • Silly question regarding exporting files

If you export as png 8, 24, 32, whatever, does the original

  • Sorry another silly question regarding the VCAP 5.5 related to the vMA

If I remember correctly the vMA got dropped from the VCAP 5.5 exam however it is still in the actual exam lab available to use (feel free to correct me if I am wrong, my brain is pretty nuked at the moment from study).
My understanding is that if I invest some time in using the vMA it may be beneficial can I confirm the vMA is ready joined to a any domain and available to use in the actual exam/lab environment?  If so I will try to master it and do everything via it during the next few days

You will most likely be using the vMA appliance during the exam.

  • IWeb media browser question

    Hello,
When I open up the media browser in iWeb, the only options to draw pics from are iPhoto and Photo Booth.
Is there any way to have the My Pictures folder or Desktop also included as options?
    Thanks!

I don't think this is possible with Apple's Media Browser. But you could try this free one with which you can browse photos from iPhoto/Aperture/Lightroom library, Pictures folder, *and other predefined folders*. Click on the image:

  • Media Browser for photos in Lion?

Hi,  Updated to Lion and have a question.  I no longer see a media browser(or media section) in the left side of my finder windows. I want to be able to see photos without opening up iPhoto.  I have a "pictures" folder under favorites, but this does not let me view the phoos.  I see in mail, there is a photo browser.  How do I get one like the Mail browser into my finder on the left side?  Many thanks for your help.

What you're referring to is the Media heading in the Open dialogue. This has nothing to do with the Finder. And, yes, the media heading is still there

  • Photos don't show up in media browser when I want to insert a photo into Word

I'm fully updated in Yosemite (10.10.3) on an iMac (recently purchased).  Photos updated just the other day and I chose iCloud for storage.  When I try to insert a photo into my Word document no photos show up in the media sidebar "photos" nor in the media browser on Word.  My photolibrary is visible under "Pictures" in the sidebar, but it is grayed out. How can I link the sidebar "Media =>Photos" or un-gray it on the pictures?

Sounds like more of a question for the Mail experts. Once the file is added to the Mail message it's not really anything to do with iPhoto.

  • Media Browser vs. Qtime for HD

When I'm ready to export my movie shot in HD I have been using Media Browser so I can either burn/post to the web.
But when I do so, I am forced to reduce to the 960x540 size instead of 1920x1080 it was shot in. Should I instead export using Qtime so I can keep the original size?
Any benefits to using Media Browser over Qtime for export?
    Thanks!

But when I do so, I am forced to reduce to the 960x540 size instead of 1920x1080 it was shot in. Should I instead export using Qtime so I can keep the original size?
Assuming your content was captured and edited at full resolution then you need to answer an number of additional questions:
    1) To what do you intend to burn and how? Data discs can be burned containing any resolution that your software and hardware can support. DVDs burned to meet the requirements of NTSC displays are limited to an encode matrix of 720x480. Blu-ray would support "full HD Resolution" only if you have the hardware and software to support both the burn and playback of your content and your potential viewers have compatible playback capabilities if you plan to "distribute."
    2) With regard to web use, what connect speeds are you targeting and type of server service? Generally, web files are limited by data rate considerations. HD files may require about 6.5 times the bandwidth of your SD files to retain similar levels of quality. The greater the quality desired, the greater the data rate required meaning the larger the file must be. So unless you and all of your potential views have FIOS connections, you will likely have to either settle for reduced quality or reduced dimensions. In addition, there is the question of uploads and file duration. I use a DotMac account which means a relatively slow and limited upload capability. The last 2 hour file I posted was a 1670 kbps standard definition 640x272 (2.35:1 aspect) movie that was only 1.4 GBs but took about 5 hours to upload. So consider well your priorities when considering the use of "full resolution" HD on the Internet.
Any benefits to using Media Browser over Qtime for export?
They basically represent pre-sets that work well for SD burning, iPhone, iPod, TV, and web work consistent with many intermediate and high-speed cable/DSL services. For the uninitiated, they provide suitable files for general use with little or no conversion/compression knowledge required. If you know what you are doing, you can, of course, get more out of your files using custom exports targeted for specific uses. For the most part these pre-sets are well considered. For instance, you complain that the "large" pre-set was limited to 960x540. That is because it is the largest dimension file that is compatible with TV at 30 (29.97) fps. To use larger dimensions would mean reducing the frame rate during export which can decrease the smoothness of playback.

  • Question regarding homehub and Open reach router -...

    Hi all,
I had infinity installed earlier this month and am happy with it so far. I do have a few questions regarding the service and hardware though.
I run both my BT openreach router and BT Home hub from the same power socket. The problem is, if I turn the plug on so both the Homehub and Openreach Router start up at the same time, the home hub will never get an Internet connection from the router. To solve this I have to turn the BT home hub on first and leave it for a minute, then start the router up and it all works fine. I'm just curious if this is the norm or do I have some faulty hardware?
Secondly, I appreciate the estimated speed BT quote isn't always accurate, I was quoted 49mbits down but received 38mbits down - Which I was happy with. Recently though it has dropped to 30. I am worried this might continue to drop over time. and as of present I am 20mbits down on the estimate . For the record 30mbits is actually fine and probably more than I would ever need. If I could boost it some how though I would be interested to hear from you.
    Thanks, .

Just a clarification: the two boxes are the HomeHub (router, black) and the modem (white).  The HomeHub has its own power switch, the modem doesn't.
There is something wrong if the HomeHub needs to be turned on before the modem.  As others have said, in general best to leave the modem on all the time.  You should be able to connect them up in any order, or together.  (For example, I recently tripped the mains cutout, and when I restored power the modem and HomeHub went on together and everything was ok).
Check if the router can connect/disconnect from the broadband using the web interface.  Leaving the modem and HomeHub on all the time, go to http://192.168.1.254/ on a browser on a connected computer, and see whether the Connect/Disconnect button works.

  • I have some questions regarding setting up a software RAID 0 on a Mac Pro

I have some questions regarding setting up a software RAID 0 on a Mac pro (early 2009).
These questions might seem stupid to many of you, but, as my last, in fact my one and only, computer before the Mac Pro was a IICX/4/80 running System 7.5, I am a complete novice regarding this particular matter.
A few days ago I installed a WD3000HLFS VelociRaptor 300GB in bay 1, and moved the original 640GB HD to bay 2. I now have 2 bootable internal drives, and currently I am using the VR300 as my startup disk. Instead of cloning from the original drive, I have reinstalled the Mac OS, and all my applications & software onto the VR300. Everything is backed up onto a WD SE II 2TB external drive, using Time Machine. The original 640GB has an eDrive partition, which was created some time ago using TechTool Pro 5.
The system will be used primarily for photo editing, digital imaging, and to produce colour prints up to A2 size. Some of the image files, from scanned imports of film negatives & transparencies, will be 40MB or larger. Next year I hope to buy a high resolution full frame digital SLR, which will also generate large files.
Currently I am using Apple's bundled iPhoto, Aperture 2, Photoshop Elements 8, Silverfast Ai, ColorMunki Photo, EZcolor and other applications/software. I will also be using Photoshop CS5, when it becomes available, and I will probably change over to Lightroom 3, which is currently in Beta, because I have had problems with Aperture, which, until recent upgrades (HD, RAM & graphics card) to my system, would not even load images for print. All I had was a blank preview page, and a constant, frozen "loading" message - the symbol underneath remained static, instead of revolving!
It is now possible to print images from within Aperture 2, but I am not happy with the colour fidelity, whereas it is possible to produce excellent, natural colour prints using its "minnow" sibling, iPhoto!
My intention is to buy another 3 VR300s to form a 4 drive Raid 0 array for optimum performance, and to store the original 640GB drive as an emergency bootable back-up. I would have ordered the additional VR300s already, but for the fact that there appears to have been a run on them, and currently they are out of stock at all, but the more expensive, UK resellers.
I should be most grateful to receive advice regarding the following questions:
    QUESTION 1:
I have had a look at the RAID setting up facility in Disk Utility and it states: "To create a RAID set, drag disks or partitions into the list below".
If I install another 3 VR300s, can I drag all 4 of them into the "list below" box, without any risk of losing everything I have already installed on the existing VR300?
Or would I have to reinstall the OS, applications and software again?
I mention this, because one of the applications, Personal accountz, has a label on its CD wallet stating that the Licence Key can only be used once, and I have already used it when I installed it on the existing VR300.
    QUESTION 2:
I understand that the failure of just one drive will result in all the data in a Raid 0 array being lost.
Does this mean that I would not be able to boot up from the 4 drive array in that scenario?
Even so, it would be worth the risk to gain the optimum performance provide by Raid 0 over the other RAID setup options, and, in addition to the SE II, I will probably back up all my image files onto a portable drive as an additional precaution.
    QUESTION 3:
Is it possible to create an eDrive partition, using TechTool Pro 5, on the VR300 in bay !?
Or would this not be of any use anyway, in the event of a single drive failure?
    QUESTION 4:
Would there be a significant increase in performance using a 4 x VR300 drive RAID 0 array, compared to only 2 or 3 drives?
    QUESTION 5:
If I used a 3 x VR300 RAID 0 array, and installed either a cloned VR300 or the original 640GB HD in bay 4, and I left the Startup Disk in System Preferences unlocked, would the system boot up automatically from the 4th. drive in the event of a single drive failure in the 3 drive RAID 0 array which had been selected for startup?
Apologies if these seem stupid questions, but I am trying to determine the best option without foregoing optimum performance.

    Well said.
    Steps to set up RAID
Setting up a RAID array in Mac OS X is part of the installation process. This procedure assumes that you have already installed Mac OS 10.1 and the hard drive subsystem (two hard drives and a PCI controller card, for example) that RAID will be implemented on. Follow these steps:
    1. Open Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities).
    2. When the disks appear in the pane on the left, select the disks you wish to be in the array and drag them to the disk panel.
    3. Choose Stripe or Mirror from the RAID Scheme pop-up menu.
    4. Name the RAID set.
    5. Choose a volume format. The size of the array will be automatically determined based on what you selected.
    6. Click Create.
Recovering from a hard drive failure on a mirrored array
    1. Open Disk Utility in (/Applications/Utilities).
    2. Click the RAID tab. If an issue has occurred, a dialog box will appear that describes it.
    3. If an issue with the disk is indicated, click Rebuild.
    4. If Rebuild does not work, shut down the computer and replace the damaged hard disk.
    5. Repeat steps 1 and 2.
    6. Drag the icon of the new disk on top of that of the removed disk.
    7. Click Rebuild.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2559
    Drive A + B = VOLUME ONE
    Drive C + D = VOLUME TWO
What you put on those volumes is of course up to you and easy to do.
A system really only needs to be backed up "as needed" like before you add or update or install anything.
/Users can be backed up hourly, daily, weekly schedule
    Media files as needed.
    Things that hurt performance:
    Page outs
Spotlight - disable this for boot drive and 'scratch'
SCRATCH: Temporary space; erased between projects and steps.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StandardRAIDlevels
(normally I'd link to Wikipedia but I can't load right now)
Disk drives are the slowest component, so tackling that has always made sense. Easy way to make a difference. More RAM only if it will be of value and used. Same with more/faster processors, or graphic card.

  • Audio clip plays normal in Media Browser, but imports as "clicks" in session after saving & reopening.

This problem has happened with almost all of my large Audition projects. File links are intact & properly managed, and most audio files play as expected. However, some files in the session get replaced with this "click" track, for lack of a better way to describe it. The audio is literally replaced with a repetitive click, or pop sound, as you can see in the image below:
Both tracks had waveforms like the top track, but now the second track has been replaced with clicks.
The strangest part: The file in question, in this case: "Grass" (downloaded directly from Youtube Audio Library, so, not corrupt) previews perfectly fine in the Media Browser window. In the File Browser, however (tracks actually used in the session), it previews as nothing but clicks. When I try to then replace the track in the mixdown / file browser with the seemingly uncorrupted file in the Media Browser, it comes in as clicks!
The only thing I can think of is that the analysis files associated with the project are getting damaged?
    Please help!

Can you send a copy of the Grass audio file to [email protected] and we'll take a look?

  • Projects "Shared to Media Browser" don't actually appear in Media Browser

Hello all. I've got one of those "it seems so easy I must be doing something wrong" questions. (I accidentally posted this in the iMovie HD forum by accident, the first time. I'm actually using iMovie '08.)
This is the first time I've tried this, and I can't seem to get it to work. I've made a bunch of projects in iMovie that I now want to bring into iDVD. I've started "Sharing" them to the Media Browser, but they're not showing up there. Doesn't matter which other iLife app I use to look -- iWeb, iDVD, GarageBand all do the same thing -- when I look in the "Movies" section, iMovie is there, as are all the Events in my Event Library, but from the screen shots I've looked at, I think the "Shared" iMovie projects are supposed to show up there, just above the Event Library clips, right? They don't.
In iMovie, they look "shared" -- the shared projects all have the "row of square boxes" icon next to them, so it looks like something did happen -- but I can't select them in any other iLife app. My next thought is I'll just export them instead of share, and import the files directly from the Finder, no big deal, but I was just wondering if anyone knows why the Media Browser thing isn't working for me?
I'm using iLife '08 and I have my Movies folder on an external drive (could that be part of the problem?)
Thanks in advance, everyone, for any assistance you can render.
    Scott
    Los Angeles, CA

I've started "Sharing" them to the Media Browser, but they're not showing up there.
    1) Sharing to the "Media Browser" stores the project export file in your named_Project folder. As long as you do not delete (or modify) the project, the file(s) will remain available there.
    2) Your "Media Browser" files should be located under the "Movies" tab at the very top of your "Media" browser list immediately under the "iMovie" heading and not under the "Movies" heading. (I.e., they have the yellow icon as opposed to the purple source "Event" icon.
