SIMBL Agent: Why is it in the login items settings?

SIMBL Agent: Why is it in the login items settings?
I don't remember to install it.
Is it safe to unmark or remove it?

Uninstall "SIMBL" or "EasySIMBL" as follows. Back up all data before making any changes.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
/Library
In the Finder, select
          Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return. A folder will open. From that folder, delete the items listed below (some may be absent.) You may be prompted for your administrator login password.
          Application Support/SIMBL
          InputManagers/SIMBL
          LaunchAgents/net.culater.SIMBL.Agent.plist
          LaunchAgents/net.infinite-labs.SIMBLEnablerForSandboxedApps.plist
          ScriptingAdditions/EasySIMBL.osax
          ScriptingAdditions/SIMBL.osax
Log out and log back in. There may also be an item named "EasySIMBL" in the Applications folder. Delete it, if so.
Make sure you never reinstall any variant of SIMBL. It’s likely to come bundled with another third-party system modfication that depends on it. If you want trouble-free computing, avoid software that makes miraculous changes to other software, especially built-in applications. The only real exception to that rule is Safari extensions, which are mostly safe, and are easy to get rid of when they don’t work. SIMBL and its dependents are not Safari extensions.

  • How do I re-order the Login Items?

I would like to rearrange the Login items:
I have 8 items listed, but the server item (10.0.0.x) is near the bottom, and
I think that by the time Entourage and the other items load, the server mount
    command times out.
They dont appear to be in alphabetical order- do I need to remove and re-apply
    in the desired order?
    1. How can I bring the server item to the top?
    2. Bonus question: Why does the server show up as "Unknown" in the "Kind" column?
    Thanks!

Hi, the "unknown" part is your problem - if it should be your server log-in, then it would be given its name.
    See these articles for info.

Try deleting the "unknown", then adding your server again to log-in items.
    Best wishes,
    Robert.

If you do not lock that folder immediately after deleting all the contents, it will simply populate again (Resume - a "feature" in Lion). You do that by doing a Get Info (highlight folder and press Command + I keys), unlock the lock at the bottom, enter your admin password, then check the box to lock the folder. lock the lock and you're done.
Yes, that is correct. The alternative is to quit all applications prior to logging out. Lion will then have a chance to remove the saved states.

    And, for the OP:
It has also been a regular feature of Mac OS to automatically open any window that was open at shutdown. To avoit that behavior, simply close any Finder windows and  properly quit applications by closing their window and using Command + Q (or File >Quit).
This was true only for the Finder. Prior to Lion, no other apps would launch unless they were included in the Login Items for the account. And the OS would not restore windows for other apps.
A very small number of apps (TextWrangler is an example) implemented this capability prior to Lion. They could restore previously opened windows. But that is an application feature, and can be controlled by the application's preferences. Lion implements it at the system level, and users have virtually no control on a per application basis.

Are you using the Office for Mac 2011 version, as you need to do?  The Office for Mac 2004 is Not at all compatible with Mountain Lion, and the 2008 version has been noted to have some problems running with ML.
    Hope this helps

  • Is it possible to SORT the Login Items on

Is it possible to SORT the Login Items on
Apple - System Preferences - System - Accounts - Login Items?
Useful to load one of them before or after the others.
    Thanks?

I don't think you can sort them like that but you can achieve this by using apple script.
for example if you want to launch Mail first and Safari second, paste the following into script editor and save it as an application.
    tell application "Mail" to launch
    tell application Safari to launch
You can also put a delay between the two:
    tell application "Mail" to launch
    delay 3
    tell application Safari to launch
this will put a delay of 3 seconds between launches. Now remove Safari and Mail from login items and put the app you made using apple script there instead.

  • Can an AppleScript tell if it was activated by the LogIn Items?

I want to use a single script to act as a StartUp (LogIn) item that does a task automatically and that acts as an app that is clickable with dialog-box options.
So far, I have the script recognize that it's in the StartUp folder or in the loginwindow.plist file, that the other secondary app that the script activates isn't already running, and it checks to see how long the user has been logged in.
I have (do shell script "w") to get minutes logged in. I set my script to run the StartUp portion if the login time is 0 (by way of (if ReadThisSucka contains " --" then). It has worked OK so far, but I'd rather replace it with something more reliable and accurate like this:
if process of login tasks is active
or if thisApp was activated by user "login task doer" then...
    *on run*
    --Is the other app running?
    tell application "Finder"
set OtherAppStatus to (get exists of application process "application2")
    end tell
--Is the MagicScript a login item?
set theFileContents to (read file ((path to preferences as text) & "loginwindow.plist"))
    --Gets the time logged in
set CurrentDate to (do shell script "w")
--If logged in time is - - then it will act like a startup item
    if (CurrentDate contains " - -") then
    set BeginUpTime to "1"
    else
    set BeginUpTime to "0"
    end if
--If it is a login item, it will use this app
if (theFileContents contains "MagicScript") and (OtherAppStatus is false) and (BeginUpTime is "1") then
do shell script "wow, I'm a shell script"
    else
--If it isn't a LogIn Item, it will do this
    if OtherAppStatus is false then
display dialog "To run the function of application2, click App2." buttons {"Cancel", "App2"} with icon 1
if button returned of result = "App2" then
do shell script "wow, I'm a shell script"
    end if
    else
display dialog "To stop the App2, click Stoppit." buttons {"Cancel", "Stoppit"} with icon 1
if button returned of result = "Stoppit" then
    --do shell script "killall App2"
    tell application "App2" to quit
    end if
    end if
    end if
    end run

I realized that I had two viable solutions:
    1. Have the script check and see if it is in the LogIn Items and if the login timer (part of the OS) started less than 1 minute ago.
    2. Create a second app for the startup script that automatically starts.
I'd be open to a third option, but this works for now.

  • Safari wants to use the "login" keychain. -- Why can't Safari remember???

When I launch the Safari application, I get a dialogue box with a message indicating the following:
Safari wants to use the "login" keychain.
    Please enter the keychain password.
    Password:
    Cancel -- OK
When I get this dialogue box, I enter the login keychain password in the Password text box, and I click the OK button. Then, Safari proceeds as normal. This is extremely annoying, because it happens almost every time that I launch Safari.
This only started to happen after I upgraded on Monday to Mac OS X Leopard version 10.5. During the Leopard upgrade, I had problems with the keychain passwords, and so I then upgraded again with the new "Login and Keychain Update 1.0". But, the problems with Safari forgetting the login keychain password continue.
The strange thing is that there is NO option in the dialogue box to indicate that Safari should REMEMBER the password. The option does NOT exist, so I can NOT click the Remember box.
I also went into the Keychain Access utility and double-checked and confirmed that my First Aid preferences were properly CHECKED for "Synchronize login keychain password with account" and also "Keep login keychain unlocked". Both of these preferences options are checked. So, I can't understand why Safari cannot remember the login keychain password?
I have this exact same problem with the Mail application, as well.
And, it looks like many many people are having the same problem -- See the following link to related discussions:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5679135&#5679135
Can anyone please help? -- When is Apple going to release a fix for this problem? -- Has anyone received any kind of acknowledgement from Apple that they are aware of this problem and that they intend to fix it?
    Please help !!!

I had the same experience and found a solution.
After the upgrade, I had a login keychain (the default) and my original username keychain. Both are in the chain of keychains, but since it has a choice, Mail keeps asking you to confirm.
I moved all the entries out of username into login, deleted username, and all is well.
Note that Keychain asks for your password on EACH ITEM that it moves, which can be tedious. So I changed the keychain password to a single character, just for the duration, then changed it back to something secure.
If, on the other hand, you don't have two keychains, then I can offer no suggestion.

  • AirPort Base Station Agent Login Item

I noticed that i have "AirPort Base Station Agent" listed in my login items. I don't have a AirPort Base Station, never have, and I don't think I will. What would be the implications of removing this item from the Login Items list?
    Thanks.

Hello pvliii. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I noticed that i have "AirPort Base Station Agent" listed in my login items. I don't have a AirPort Base Station, never have, and I don't think I will. What would be the implications of removing this item from the Login Items list?
No. The AirPort Base Station Agent provides a means to monitor AirPort base station s.

  • Guest user Appears as "other User" at the login screen?

Hi every time i enable Guest user.
it displays as other user and asks for a user name and password
how can i make back in to default.. but with out making it a main user!
    thanks in advance!

Toggle it to 'Name & password' & flip it back
Are you also using any Network accounts from a server? These can also specify the preference that controls the login window. Network accounts are also shown in Users & Groups under the 'Network Account Server' item.
You could probably delete the preference file from /Library/Preferences/com.apple.loginwindow.plist & reboot. That should cause the login window settings to go back to default values, double check the settings afterwards. NOTE: you will need admin privileges to delete this file.

  • Login items not saved

I haven't read about this one yet so I thought I should at least mention it. Since my upgrade to 10.9 the login items for my (admin) user account are not being saved. After a reboot the list is empty again. I have re-entered them several times but that just seems a bit pointless now   Also repaired permissions on the OS X drive, just for good measure but to no avail. Login items are Mail, Messages and just one third party app: Google Chrome.
So.... Bug or something else I should try?

This happened to me from an out-the-box mac without any 3rd party software installed which makes me think this is a mavericks issue as opposed to anything else installed after.
Im not trying to be a dick BTW.

  • Account Login Items

One of the login items listed under my account in sys preferences is System Events - shown as an application. Any idea what this is? Is it safe to delete from my login items?

System Events is a system application that should never be run by hand. I have no idea why it's in your login items but it's quite safe to remove it from there.

  • ITunesHelper Login Item

So, because I have a problem with having unnecessary things running on my computer, I first unchecked the Hide button to see what might happen after logging in... nothing. So, I deleted it from the login items and looked to see what happened.... nothing. After going into iTunes, of course the helper and search functions under iTunes Help didn't work. I almost figured this would happen. So, I tried to add it back, but could only get the iTunes app in there. So, I went through the Resources folder and found the iTunesHelper app and dragged it into my login items and everything worked fine again.
My question is, why does my computer need iTunesHelper to be able to access any help function in Finder, iTunes, or generally Mac OS X?

As far as I can tell iTuneshelper affects plugin devices. That is; I removed it from the login section of my account and when I plug my iphone into the computer it will not open iTunes. If I run ituneshelper after I have closed iTunes and then plug in my phone it will open and sync with iTunes.

  • Blackberry login item that can't be removed! :(

    Hello
so i'm getting an iphone4s for christmas (yay) and finally ditching this awful blackberry. i was attempting to uninstall the blackberry software called blackberry device manager by using the installation cd. when attempting to run the uninstaller off the cd it was telling me that the device manager is not installed on my system and there is nothing to uninstall. knowing better than the stupid pop-up, i thought to re-install the software and uninstall again in the hope it would simply remove all found components. no such luck i'm afraid - it told me that not everything associated with the software could be removed. i then considered simply dragging the application from my applications folder to the trash and doing it that way.
however, i notice in my login items under system preferences that an application known as "blackberry device manager (all" is greyed out and cannot be unticked or '-'ed away. i have tried with the user & groups page unlocked. i tried booting in safe mode but it is still greyed out. my next step was to ctrl-click to open in finder and i just stuck the thing in trash (something i am sure i will be told i shouldn't have done) and got rid of it. when rebooting found it still there i then searched my library folder for blackberry files which i have also trashed (another thing as before?). also, the login item is know 'Unknown' (rather than 'application' as before) and ctrl-clicking does nothing.
so, i find it still there and with absolutely no idea how to get rid of it. i have been unable to find anything documented on the internet to do with the uninstall issue i had with the software and the same goes for finding a solution for removing greyed-out login items.
i have recently upgraded to Lion (funnily enough this is why i had been snooping around the login items to prevent the mac from being as laggy as possible at startup) if that is of importance and i'm running a mid-2010, 15" macbook pro.
any ideas or any more info required i'd be really happy to hear from you.
    thanks! joe

i have recently upgraded to Lion
Please post in the Lion forums and correct your system information as it still shows you are using OS 10.6.8.

It's not listed in the Login Items, and I don't see a preference in the app. Not sure why it still opens whenever I log in or boot up my macbook pro. Ideas?

Found the answer in another thread... it worked.
go to the directory /users/username/library/preferences and delete the files loginwindow.plist, com.apple.loginitems.plist and log out/in.
