Simple Blocking and Waiting

hello,
I am studying concurrency, and was hoping some could confirm I have got this right so far...
1) When a thread waits() or sleeps(...), or sits around for an acquire()..they are all the same in terms of the CPU cycles...ie. none, they are not busy waiting?
2) Also, if I put a wait(time) at the start of a Critical Section, when the time expires, it will enter the subsequent Critical section regardless? I.e a notify would just mean it gets there sooner...
thanks

it makes no sense to put a wait(time) call in a while(condition) loop. either the condition will be met and the object notified, or the wait call will timeout, in which case you will just loop around and wait again. Maybe so. The poster who asked the question needed to understand wait(timeout)/notify() scenario hence the example.only, your example didn't actually help them understand why you would wait with a timeout, which is what i was pointing out. as dannyyates subsequently pointed out, in your example loop, the timeout was useless.
not to mention that you don't usually notify before you enter the critical section. you notify when you are leaving the critical section. also, you would set notAvailable to true when you enter the critical section. in short, that example is completely broken.It's not broken. If you think it is, can you provide an explanation, a problem scenario? Please don't confuse readers with blanket statements.
For any one interested - Java monitors are called "Signal and Continue" (search on google) because they can signal other threads and still continue to hold the lock. Besides, always remember that a.notify() must be called only when thread acquires a's lock; otherwise an exception is thrown. The problem in the example is not with the notify() but with where the condition is toggled. If there are threads that call methods on another class based on the condition (notAvailable), they might run into an exception condition because condition was toggled prematurely. Since the original question did not address this scenario, this example will suffice.thanks for the tutorial on wait/notify. but, i wasn't confused at how they worked, just at your example. actually, your explanation here is broken, because no other thread (assuming correct syncronization) would ever see the new value of notAvailable until the current thread exited the sync block. you are correct that it doesn't "technically" matter where the notify is located, however, there's no sense waking the other threads before you do the actual work, you're just wasting other thread resources. however, your followup example is more what i would expect in terms of normal sync handling, so i guess you get the general idea (other than the timeout).
again, my point was that your original example was not necessarily useful for understanding how sync worked. you made a couple of followup posts which seem to indicate that you basically know how it all, which leads me to wonder why you didn't include all that knowledge in your original example.

    Does anyone has a solution?

    Connect the iPod to its syncing computer and restore via iTunes.  If iTunes asks for the passcde and you can't enter the passcode, place the iPod in recovery mode and then restore,  For recovery mode see:

    Hello!
    I've just started using Code::Blocks and very happy with it, but there is one problem: say I have a binary file with debugging symbols, then I try to attach to it using Code::Blocks (Debug>Attach to process); when I enter the PID and press "OK" button - IDE crashes.

    I've just wrote a simple helloworld in C, added getchar() to wait, compiled it with "-g" flag and tried to attach to it with this IDE. Tried on 2 machines, different binaries: same result - IDE crashes. Am I doing something wrong, or this is a problem with WxWidgets/Code::Blocks?
    My packages are: wxgtk 2.8.12.1-3, codeblocks 10.05-2 and gdb 7.4-1.

    Are you running on an x86_64 architecture?  If so I have a pacman Code::Blocks package which is the current SVN I could upload somewhere for you..
    If not, check: Here to download and make the latest SVN version.  There is a patch you have to apply on that page and also you need to make the build using the makepkg "-fpermissive" option.
    Why do you want this SVN version (version 7932)?  Well, it's current as of April 14 this month.  The C::B 10.05 version is 2010, 5th month.  So way out of date.  There have been no official builds since then so you want to be using SVN until there is.
    I don't know if using the SVN version would fix your issue but even if not: it has a host of other enhancements and fixes.

  • Question about "synchronized" and "wait"

    Hello, everyone!
    I have seen a piece of code like this,
    synchronized (lock)
    //do operation 1
    lock.wait();
    //do operation 2
    I think in the above piece of code, when a thead finished operation 1, it will release the lock and let other threads waiting for the lock have chance to run the same block of code. Am I correct?
    If I am correct, I have a further question, a "synchronized" block means a set of operations that can not be interrupted, but when invoke "wait" method, the thread running in the "synchronized" block will be terminated (interrupted) by release the lock and other threads will have chance to enter the "synchronized" block. In short, the execution inside the "synchronized" block will be interrupted. So, I wonder whether the above piece of code is correct and conforms to the principle of "synchronized". And what is its real use?
    Thanks in advance,
    George

    Thanks, pkwooster buddy!You're welcome
    I just wondered whether "wait inside a synchronized
    block" technology is thread safe. Please look at the
    following example,wait and synchronized are thread safe.
    public class Foo {
    int mVal= 0;
    public final Object mLock = ...;
    public void doIt() {
    synchronized(mLock) {
    mVal = ...;
    mLock.wait();
    if (mVal == ...) {
    // do something
    } else {
    // do something else
    }If we have two threads, T1 and T2, enter the block in
    their respective order, and T1 is woken up first, T2
    may have tampered with T1's execution path because T2
    changed mVal while T1 was asleep. So T2 manipulate
    instance field mVal is a side-effect.when you do the wait() you give up the lock and the other threads get a chance to run. When you exit the wait() you get the new value of the myVal variable which may have been changed. This is exactly what you want. To make that not thread save you could do
    int temp = myVal;
    wait();
    if(temp == ...)in this case the variable temp contains the old vale of myVal.
    >
    I think the most safest way is never wait inside a
    synchronized block, but it is less efficient. What do
    you think about the trick of wait inside a
    synchronized block? I think you are very experienced
    in thread field from your kind reply.
    Thanks in advance,
    Georgewait(), notify() and notifyAll() are very useful. You need them when you want threads to cooperate in an predictable manner. I recommend that you review the section on consumer and producer classes and wait and notify in the Threads Tutorial. It gives good examples. For a practical example of this you could also take a look at my Multithreaded Server Example. It implements a simple chat server that switches String messages. Look especially at the send(), doSend() and popMessage() methods in the StreamConnection class. These allow the receive thread of one user to send messages out using the send thread of another user. If you have questions about that example, please post the questions on that topic.
    Hope this helps.

  • Statspack: High log file sync timeouts and waits

    Hi all,
    Please see an extract from our statpack report:

    I hope the above is readable. I'm concerned with the very high number of Waits and Timeouts, particulary around the log file sync event. From reading around I suspect that the disk our redo log sits on isn't fast enough.
    1) Is this conclusion correct, are these timeouts excessively high (70% seems high...)?
    2) I see high waits on almost every other event (but not timeouts), is this pointing towards an incorrect database database setup (give our very high loads of 160 executes second?
    Any help would be much appreciated.

    It looks like your disk storage can't keep up with the volume of I/O requests from your database.
    The first few thing need to look at, what're IO intensive SQLs in your database. Are these SQLs doing unnecessary full table scan?
    Find out the hot blocks and the objects they belong.
    Check v$session_wait view.
    Is there any other suspicious activity going on in your Server ? Like other program other than Oracle doing high IO activities? Are there any core dump going on?

  • Email service blocked and BBM not working on BB torch slide

    HI.
    I have real issues with my phone. First, my BBM stopped working, so I thought it was the bbm rim server because all other applications were working(whatsapp, email, facebook etch). Then I stopped receiving emails. Again, I didn't take it too seriously until I tried to send emails and a red cross appears with a message saying "service Blocked".
    At this point, it is strange cause my browser works and my facebook. What really got me pissed was that my whatsapp stopped working as well, and I'm no longer on my mobile service plan, I'm using wifi at home. I was two seconds away from resetting my phone when it occured to me that it might not solve the problem.
    I have looked at other possible solotions online and my phone does not have the advance system settings or the enterprise activation menu. I don't know what to do, HELP!!

    Hi and Welcome to the Community!
    Some clarification is needed...I cannot tell exactly if your device is a BES-enabled one or not...if it is, then stop now and seek support from your BES admins as they control, well, everything.
    If you are not BES, then with a strong carrier network signal (e.g., not merely WiFi), I suggest the following steps, in order, even if they seem redundant to what you have already tried (steps 1 and 2 each should result in a message coming to your BB...please wait for that before proceeding to the next step):
    1) Register HRT
    KB00510 How to register a BlackBerry smartphone with the wireless network
    Please wait for one "registration" message to arrive to your Messages app
    2) Delete and Resend Service Books (pre-BB10 devices only)
    KB05000Delete the service book for the BlackBerry Internet Service email account from the BlackBerry smartphone
    If you have no CMIME entry, then skip the deletion
    KB02830 Send the service books for the BlackBerry Internet Service
    Please wait for "Activation" Messages, one per already configured email account, to arrive in your Messages. If you have no already configured email accounts, please wait 1 hour.
    3) Reboot
    Pre-BB10 Devices ONLY. With power ON, remove the back cover and pull out the battery. Wait about a minute then replace the battery and cover. Power up and wait patiently through the long reboot -- ~5 minutes.
    BB10 Devices. Hold the top button down until the counter reaches zero. Wait for the device to be fully shut down (e.g., nothing at all displayed on the screen, no LED lights, etc.). Hold the top button until the red LED is lit. Wait through the full boot-up process. IF this fails, you can attempt the battery-pull method above, but it is normally NOT recommended unless nothing else works.
    See if things have returned to good operation. Like all computing devices, BB's suffer from memory leaks and such...with a hard reboot being the best cure.
    Hopefully that will get things going again for you! If not, then you should contact your mobile service provider for formal support.
    Then again...
    misskedia wrote:
    and I'm no longer on my mobile service plan, I'm using wifi at home.
    If, by that, you mean that you have allowed your mobile service plan to expire, then that could explain everything. There are many services on BBs that are proprietary, and access to them requires subscription to an adequate data plan from your provider, regardless of the channel you use them through. Even if you only use WiFi as your connection pathway, you still must have an adequate data plan from your carrier in order to do many things, including email and BBM.
    So if that's the case, then it explains everything...sometimes, when a data plan is allowed to expire, it takes the carrier a few days (sometimes longer) to "catch up" and shut things down that you are not paying them for.
    Good luck!

  • WEBUTIL_HOST.blocking and winword 2003

    Hi all,
    I got some problems using webutil_host and winword 2003.
    As i open a document with winword in blocking mode, works well if word is not already open.
    Eg if word is already open it dunot do the blocking stuff, and go back to forms immediatly.
    here is the code :
    LC$Cmd := 'cmd /c start "" /WAIT "winword.exe'||'" '|| Path_vima;
    Ret := WEBUTIL_HOST.blocking( LC$Cmd ) ;
    fms_message('back from call');
    LN$But := WEBUTIL_HOST.Get_return_Code( Ret ) ;
    If LN$But <> 0 Then
    Set_Alert_Property( 'AL_ERREUR', TITLE, 'Host() command' ) ;
    End if ;
    So if winword is not open on client -> it works well
    if winword already open -> it dunot block and display fms_message('back from call');
    Plz Help :)
    Thanks
    PS : this work perfectly with Excel ....

    Ok seems that dunot work even if not using forms.
    as launch a cmd like cmd /c start /WAIT winword
    it wait the close of winword to continue execution
    but if i launch winword first and than try a
    cmd /c start /WAIT winword
    it open a second winword but dunot wait for word to be close.....
    that's to bad .
    I'll try look at MS forum

  • BT Infinity Change of Address Order Blocked and Lo...

    I have just moved house, and I placed an order to move my services, including BT Infinity, to the new address about a week before.
    A couple of days later, BT called me and said that the engineer could not attend on the 8th August, but would attend on the 12th August, and I was happy with that.
    However on 12th August, the engineer did not show up.  When I called BT, they said the order was blocked in "pending" status, and had not been processed.  I called BT several more times and was on the phone for at least an hour each time, passed from pillar to post and back again, and/or to vaguely fictional sounding escalation departments or other teams.
    One person told me my order was blocked and needed to be cancelled.  Another person told me my order had already been cancelled but  not correctly.
    The last information I was given was that they had to email my problem to yet another special department who would get back to me "within a few days".
    I would wait a few more days, but I remember getting stuck in this exact same loop with a house move about 6 or 7 years ago, and it took weeks and many more phone calls before I got any broadband.  My experience with BT is that if everything works smoothly and goes through first time, it is all very good.  However, as soon as there is any small problem with an order, it turns into a big disaster and you can't find anyone who can fix it.
    Can anyone give any advice about how I can get through to the right people who can sort this out?  Also, I've heard that writing a letter to the Managing Director of BT sometimes helps - does anyone have the correct address?
    (If I've posted this to the wrong section, please advise which section it should go in).
    cheers and thanks in advance for any help.
    Patrick Warner.

    All, just to give a happy ending to this story, the BT enginner has turned up today and has got the Infininty working for me, so at least on the 3rd attempt I have now got a good service.
    In fact the engineer who turned up did a great job and was able to get the modem working where I wanted it to be, even though the internal wiring seemed to be messed up and he had to spend over an hour trying to figure out how to get it working.  It was a new house that I had just moved into and was not familiar with the setup of sockets, or which one was wired as master, and it appeared that a previous owner had been messing with things and using non standard approach.
    Unfortunately I fear that because of that, someone else may miss their appointment later, as he was here for over 2 hours in total.  I guess that's why sometimes they don't show up, if a previous job took longer than expected.
    The only issue I have now is that the phone socket in the room where Sky needs to be installed does not work, but it may be that it never worked in the first place.  BT guy told me that we would need to wire it to orange pair to get it to work, assuming the cable is not compromised.  I have posted a separate message under "Phones" asking for advice on that.
    thanks
    Patrick.

  • COMMIT WORK and WAIT FOR n SECONDS

    I am designing a WebDynpro Java application.  It makes an update call followed immediately by a display call which should return the data that was just updated.  However, it appears that there is some DB latency involved and the data takes a few seconds to update.  The application displays old data if the display call is performed too quickly after the update call.
    All suggestions I could find point to having a Thread sleep on the Java side for a few seconds or have a WAIT FOR n SECONDS and/or COMMIT WORK AND WAIT statement in the ABAP function module.  Neither of these solutions is acceptable in a company-wide application where database latency could vary significantly based on traffic.
    I tried all kinds of functions (i.e. BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMMIT) as well as various forms of COMMIT WORK... nothing except a WAIT works correctly.  There must be a statement out there that waits for the database write to be complete!  How is this solved without picking an arbitrary WAIT time?  What am I missing?
    Thanks in advance!

    You can write the other way.
    declare one variable
    data : wa_try type i.
    wa_try = 10. -> set as 10 ,even you do not get value ,keep on incresing.
    after BAPI FM
    you can call comitt fm.
    after BAPI_TRANSACTION_COMITT
    just use simple logic.
    do wa_try.
    select * from table into table
                                  where record = bapi fm record ( You get in RET2 Message).
    if sy-subrc eq 0.
    exit.
    endif.
    Thanks

  • Query to track the holder and waiter info

    Hi All,
    I have framed the following query to get the blocker and holder info.
    I intend to use this query in a auto-generated mail which executes every 15 mins
    I have put an outer join on the holder because the holder DML might have completed its execution (v$sqlarea might not have info about this holder DML) at the time the auto mail configuration fires this query
    I am not a dba and was apprehensive if there is some mistake in the logic of my query.
    I was also expecting to join v$sql_bind_capture using sql_hash_value and sql_address just the way in which I have joined v$sqlarea
    Looking forward to your kind help in vetting the below query

  • Data Blocks and the Elapsed Time

    Hi,
    I have created 3 tables with one column only. As an example Table 1 below:
    SQL> create table T8k( x char(2000));
    So 3 tables are created in this way i.e. T8k,T16K and T4K
    T8 = in the default database tablespace of 8k (11g v11.1.0.6.0 - Production) (O.S=Windows).
    T16 = I created in a Tablespace with Blocksize 16k.
    T4K = I created in a Tablespace with Blocksize 4k. In the same Instance.
    Each table has 290,000 rows and all the 3 tables have equal size of 555MB (2006(rowsize with overhead) * 290,000/1024/1024 = 555MB) to test Elapsed Time (set timing on).
    As these 3 tables are created under different block sizes so the allocated no. of data blocks are different as below:
    T8K = 97177 BLOCKS= 00:41:20.21 (Elapsed Time)
    T16K=41639 BLOCKS= 00:44:11.59
    BT4K=293656 BLOCKS=00:37:29.06
    Please note the difference. First table i.e. 8k block size, allocated blocks are 97177 and taking around 41 mins. Third table i.e. BT4K (in a 4k block size tablespace), allocated blocks(293656 ) are almost 3 times bigger, taking around 37 mins to execute the query. I mean the difference is only 4 mins hardly and blocks difference is 3 times.
    In case of any doubt, I've created these tables bigger than the memory used for my db(memory_max_size 408M) i.e. 555 MB that If Blocks are already in cache then reading the blocks and counting the rows will nearly be the same regardless of the block sizes or the number of blocks.
    Need solid suggestions and if possilble, links also which has some serious discussions regarding my issue.
    Bundle of thanks.
    Best Regards,

    Because I was not completely satisfied with the things last time. It doesn't seem so simple to me as people said
    I thought may some guru have a look today, not just to point out that i have created it again.
    And I have compact my question to avoid confusion.
