Simple error handling

how can i catch a NullPointerException and print the line "The list is empty" across an entire class, without modifying every individual method?

The problem is that when i try to call any mutator method on the list, when there is infact no list, the class will throw a NullPointerException
What i want is that System.err.println("The List is empty"); is called whenever a NullPointerException occurs, rather than just crashing the program...
i could always do try, catch in every single method... but i thought there must be a cleaner way of doing this...
here's the code:
public class StringLinkedList
    private ListNode head;
    public StringLinkedList()
        head = null;
    public String getLast() {
        ListNode position = head;
        while (position.getLink() != null)
            position = position.getLink();
        return position.getData();
    public String getBeforeLast() {
        ListNode position = head;
        while ((position.getLink()).getLink() != null)
            position = position.getLink();
        return position.getData();
    public int length()
        int count = 0;
        ListNode position = head;
        while (position != null)
            count++;
            position = position.getLink();
        return count;
    public void addANodeToStart(String addData)
        head = new ListNode(addData, head);
    public void addANodeToEnd(String addData) {
        ListNode tail = new ListNode(addData, null);
        ListNode position = head;
        while (position.getLink()!= null) {
            position = position.getLink();
        position.setLink(tail);
    public void deleteHeadNode()
        if (head != null)
            head = head.getLink();
        else
            System.out.println("Deleting from an empty list.");
            System.exit(0);
    public boolean onList(String target)
        return (Find(target) != null);
    private ListNode Find(String target)
        ListNode position;
        position = head;
        String dataAtPosition;
        while (position != null)
            dataAtPosition = position.getData();
            if (dataAtPosition.equals(target))
                return position;
            position = position.getLink();
        return null;
    public void showList()
        ListNode position;
        position = head;
        while (position != null)
            System.out.println(position.getData());
            position = position.getLink();
}the second class...
public class ListNode

  • Simple Error Handling Question

    I know that in general, when you are handling an error, you can either pass the back by adding a throws declaration to the method in question, or surround with try/catch and handle the error.
    What do you do if you want the error to force the application to stop? Just send a simple output message and then stop.
    Thx,
    hqd

    What do you do if you want the error to force the
    application to stop? Just send a simple output
    message and then stop.You should stop wanting that. If the code in method X
    encounters an error it can't deal with, it should
    throw that error to whoever calls it. It is the
    responsibility of the caller to decide what to do,
    not the responsibility of method X.But the buck has to stop somewhere. Are you saying that only the main method should ever stop a program?
    Maybe this is one of the gaps in my understanding of good overall design, but it seems perfectly valid to me to have certain methods that, when they error, I know I always want my application to stop. Passing it along up the chain might involve adding a whole bunch of throws declarations.... why... just to say we have no methods that stop the application. Say this piece of code is not longer used in the spot that throws it's possible error up the chain.... now you have to remove all those throws.... isn't this ripple effect on our code bad design?
    What am I missing?

  • Error handling function: ORA-20001: get_dbms_sql_cursor error:ORA-00942: table or view does not exist  is not trapped. Why?

    Why APEX 4.1 Error handling function does not trap  the error of missing table?
    Say, I create simple application with single IR report page and I also assign standard simple error handling function.
    Function works perfectly, except but this case:
    If I just drop a table used by report page and then refresh the page I am getting usual APEX error message:

    and error handling function is not invoked at all.
    Is this a feature or a bug?

  • WSN 9791, 3202 error handling

    I have setup a 9791with 3202 and attached a 250ohm resistor to measure a 4-20mA signal at AI0 of the 3202. I am continously measing the input voltage and I am also checking battery voltage, link quality, external power and error messages with simple error handling. Everything seems to work fine. Now I disconnect power from the 3202 and remove the batteries. Surprisingly the input voltage at AI0 remains its value, the battery voltages remains the same, it show that external power is present and the error handling shows no error. After 3 minutes MAX will indicate that the signal has been lost. The VI shows that the external power has been disconnected. All other values remain the same
    I am using LabVIEW 2009FDS and I do not have Pioneer or any other additional software.I have updated the firmware of the 9791 and 3202 to the latest revision.
    How can I show in my VI that the signal has been lost? MAX seems to be able to do it, but only after 3 minutes.Why does the error handling never show anything? Why does the link quality remain the same when signal is lost?
    Thanks

    I am not very impressed by this. I have always been with any NI hardware that I have purchased in the past. I am not sure why there is an error in/out, it does not do anything. The time server as an indicator if the data is old or not would be great IF I had access to a time server. This application will be setup where I have only power and no internet available. Even if I did it would not work because I have to turn off any other network connection to make it work. I have treid the Meinberg time server. It worked once and now I get 12/31/1903 again. As a minimum I would think that the Link Quality would go to 0 and not retain its value. This seems like a firmware issue that NI should fix asap.  This seems not reliable for a stand alone executable.I should be able to select time server or OS system clock. I realize OS system clock may not be very accurate but at least it is something to use for time stamp. NI should also fix that in a future firmware rev. At this time I am leaning towards dumping the NI-WSN and look for something else. I guess I could buy the additional software like RT/pioneer that might allow me to do what I want but the added cost will not be appreciated by my boss. For that money I might be able to purchase something else.

  • Error handling and string controls...

    I have a simple program where You enter something in a String control. It is
    wired to a case structure. The default case wires a 0 to a Simple Error
    Handler, which outputs an error message.
    How do I change the String control to the empty string after I give the
    error message, so that the program isn't stuck giving errors infinitely?
    Thanks,
    Jon

    You can create a local variable of your string control where you can write
    any string into your string control after giving the error massage.

  • Displaying errors when Enable automatic error handling option is on

    In order to display error messages do I need general or simple error handler to implement if I have Enable automatic error handling on?
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Both will (optionally) display a popup when an error occurs. The general error handler just has more options for special cases. The simple error handler is typically sufficient.
    If you havce automatic error handing enabled, you'll get a popup whenever a function generates an error AND the error output is not wired. Once you wire an error handler, the automatic error handling will no longer occur.
    To display an error, you can also just place a plain error indicator on the front panel. This avoids annoying popup messages.

  • General Labview Error Handler question discussion

    Recently two functions were brought to my attention, the General Error Handler and the Simple Error handler.
    And I cannot wrap my hand around these two features.  While I have been using Labview I have always used the Labview error cluster.  When would you use these two features?  As I feel the cluster error is much help.
    Maybe it is my defnition that I have confused:
    The general error handler will display a dialogue box describing the error that will be passed and shuts down the code?
    The simple error handler notifys the operator that an error has occured but it can be customized for adding functionality, it takes the error cluster input and determines if an error was generated.  "If an error has been generated, the VI displays a dialog box with the error code, a brief description of the error, and the location of the error."   How is this not the same as an error cluster?
    If anyone has any simple code examples for this or knowledge I greatly appriciate it.

    You are correct that they give the same information.  The difference is that if you want to use an error cluster you will need an indicator on your front panel.  If you use the simple error handler you won't have to have an error cluster on your front panel but the user will be notified if an error does occur.
    Think about all the programs you normally use (excel, chrome, etc.).  As a user you expect that errors aren't happening, and if errors do occur then the application will usually just close out and you get an error dialog about the error.
    I use the simple error handler with no user interaction to extract the error text.  Is there an easier way of doing that?

    In the real world, yes.  For the CLD, that is a minimum to get the points.  Just throw down the Simple Error Handler to show the error dialog and you have "handled the error".  If the spec does not say how to handle the error, stop the loop(s) and show the error dialog.  If you are given a spec of how to handle the error, do whatever you are told.

  • DML error table intermittently fails to generate error handling in package

    Hi!
    In OWB 11gR2 (11.2.0.1), we're seeing an issue when setting the DML Error table name on a target table. Sometimes, mostly on older and complex mappings, the error handling logic does not get generated when we deploy the mapping, and nothing is populated in the error tables for error conditions, though the errors display as warnings in the OWB UI.
    When I create a new mapping that is very simple - one table loading another - setting the DML Error table name always results in errors being put in the error table. That's great, but that doesn't help us with our more-complex mappings that aren't logging errors.
    We can't determine the cause of the issue. I can't see a difference in the configuration of the mappings that work and don't work. Generation Mode is All Operating Modes. Default Operating Mode is Set based fail over to row based. We've generated the error table using DBMS_ERRLOG.CREATE_ERROR_LOG. The target tables do not have primary keys.
    I've tried synchronizing the target table operator in the mapping as another forum thread suggested. No change.
    Has anyone else seen this issue or know of a workaround?
    Thanks,
    Jayce

    Which logic did you talk about ?
    For the version 10, you will find the error table more on the insert statement such as:
    INSERT INTO "TSALES"
      ("PROD_ID",
      "SALES"."AMOUNT_SOLD" "AMOUNT_SOLD"
    FROM
      "SALES"  "SALES"
    LOG ERRORS INTO TSALES_ERR (get_audit_detail_id) REJECT LIMIT 50;Come from here:
    http://blogs.oracle.com/warehousebuilder/2007/08/set_based_errors_dml_error_log.html
    Then check the insert SQL generated.

  • Error handling in master detail form

    Hi Guys,
    Apex 4.2.1
    I use the custum error handling of apex to customize the errror message.
    I add a row in the detail form with a dupicate key which is handled by the error function
    after submiiting the master record the error message is correct displayed but the row which generates the error is gone from the details.
    How to keep the record in the details visible?
    Thanks

    Hello 942793 -- Do you have a name / nickname? -- We still don't know how to address you,
    Say, could you tell us -- because sometimes different versions have different capabilities:
    Full APEX version number,
    Full database version number,
    APEX web browser architecture (EPG, OHS, or APEX listener)
    Browser(s) and version(s) used,
    Operating System with version number and architecture (32/64 bit),
    [If you mentioned these before we don't have access to that info in this thread.]
    Also, are you using ARP (Automatic Row Processing) for this Master-Detail or have you programmed your own updates?
    Did you use an APEX wizard to create the Master-Detail or have you written you own code for the Master-Detail?
    To the problem:  In short, APEX is ensuring update consistency by preventing an update of a record/row that has changed since the code retrieved it.  So, one needs to figure out where/why it changed and what to do about it.
    ?  Is this Master-Detail part of you application fairly simple?  Could you put just that part out on apex.oracle.com for folks to look at?  That can speed resolution of these, sometimes difficult, update problems.

  • OSB 10gR3 Error handling and reporting action approach

    My use case:
    Simple Proxy service routes to an external web service created as Business service in OSB
    Whenever there is transport error/soap fault from the external web service, that error needs to be reported along with the original request received by the proxy service.
    What I have tried so far?
    Created a error handler/stage in the route node of my proxy service. Within that stage, added a report action to report $body which contains the error received from the external service. I created a report index key/value to report for this request, I used a specific element in the body of the original request sent to the proxy service.
    Within the route error handling stage, I realized that $body which had my original request to the proxy service lost its content and replaced by the fault from external WS. So I made a copy of $body in my request pipeline and tried to use an element from that copy to index my failed request. But the copied variable always seem to be empty within the error handling stage.
    So, my questions to the experts,
    1)What variables are visible within the error handling stage/scope?
    2)What is the best way(less overhead) to preserve my original request as $body context variable is already changed with fault by the time error handler is invoked? Remember I wanted to report the original request only incase of error, for success cases I don't care/I don't want to un-necessarily add an overhead of copying to a vairbale.
    3)Is there another proper way to simply report the original request received by proxy and fault received from external service for a given key in the request, say orderId
    Sample proxy request:
    <MyData>
    <OrderId>123</OrderId>
    </MyData>

    1)What variables are visible within the error handling stage/scope? $fault - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13159_01/osb/docs10gr3/userguide/context.html#wp1051816
    $body - http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13159_01/osb/docs10gr3/userguide/context.html#wp1103311
    2)What is the best way(less overhead) to preserve my original request as $body context variable is already changed with fault by the time error handler is invoked? Remember I wanted to report the original request only incase of error, for success cases I don't care/I don't want to un-necessarily add an overhead of copying to a variable.Can you print $body and $fault variables in your error handler?. Are they different ? What I'm suspecting is the back-end webservice is faulting (returning soap-fault and http response =5xx). There is no other way I can think of than copying the contents of $body to a separate variable.
    Thanks

  • BPM error handling

    Hi,
    I've read many messages on this forum regarding BPM error handling but am still a little confused.
    In my scenario the BPM is quite simple. All it does is Call web service (synchrous) then transform and then call another web service synchronous.
    Now , If any call to the two web services fails , I would like to be able to restart the two calls... now if they fail again, I would like to be able to restart the two calls again... until they work. But each time the restart would be done manualy in the BPM monitoring transactions.
    The way I understand the error handling
    if I put my synchronous send steps and transformations in a step and catch the exception they throw , I can send myself an alert and then throw another exception which I dont handle. This way , since that exception is not handled , it will set the process in error and I can restart the process later.
    However , how can I set it up so that when I restart the bpm , both calls are done again and the same exception handling happens.
    Now , when I restart, it seems only what comes after the block and the exception is executed. If I put the sync send calls in the exception handling branch, that will allow me to run the send steps once after an exception...
    Thanks.

    Even if I don't throw the exception and its a System error on the synchonous call, the BPM is in error but the next call will
    go through...
    I don't know what the point of EOIO was in that case ?
    Even having an Exception branch is enough....you need not compulsorily have anything in it.....so when an exception occurs in your Sync step the control goes to the Exception Branch of the Block....but since there is no step defined in the branch nothing happens.....and the Control then passes to the next branch as in a normal flow.....
    Since the Exception branch is defined the BPM will not wait/ stop/ error-out if any thing goes wrong in the Sync Send step.....it will continue....this is the normal behavior....an error entry will however be shown...if you want that your process stops if the Sync Send fails then have a Control Step (Action--> Cancel Process) in the Exception Branch

    Abhishek.

  • Servlet 2.3 error handling

              Hi,
              Once again, I have problems with the additions in Servlet 2.3's error handling.
              I'm looking at SRV 9.9.2.
              To be concrete, I need to catch every RuntimeException with an error-page which
              shows the source exception.
              According to SRV 9.9.2, I only need to configure :
              <error-page>
              <exception-type>java.lang.RuntimeException</exception-type>
              <location>/err-exception.jsp</location>
              </error-page>
              But with 6.1 beta, every NullPointerException for example is catched as a simple
              HTTP 500 error, without giving me the root exception. To have it catched by my
              /err-exception.jsp page, I need to explicitely configure it's type.
              Then I need to configure explicitely every RuntimeException sub-class...
              The addition in Servlet 2.3 SRV 9.9.2 was apparently done to avoid this (which
              is a good idea :) )
              Can you please implement this feature ?
              Thanks in advance

    This is already fixed for 6.1 SP1

  • Error handling in simulatenous loops

    I am trying to design a good error handling system for a project I am working on, but I have run into a "design" problem. I thought it would be good to ask for some guidance here before I sit down and start create the error handling system.
    I have more than one subVI started from one mainVI, each subVI with an individual while loop running (they all stop when I press the same stop button from the mainVI). Each while loop continously retrievews information from various serial devices. Each VISA call etc. can thus of course generate errors. I only want one error dialog box in my mainVI front panel displaying any error that happens.
    How would I design this in a good way? As I see it, I would have to use the error dialog box in the mainVI as a global/functional global. Each subVI would then write to this global error dialog box. This could however cause race conditions where only the latest error gets displayed even if earlier errors happened. Appreciate some good advice here.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    First and foremost I would avoid using the sequence structure. LabVIEW is a data flow language and you should take advantage of that rather than forcing it to be a sequenctial language. Take a look various examples that ship with LabVIEW. You will want to definitely check out the examples for state machines and the producer consumer architectures. Your current code will not meet your needs of continually monitoring for errors since your "Error" queue is not in a parallel loop task.
    I have attached a very quik example of a producer consumer architecture with an error processing loop. There are no real code details but this is a simple example of an approach to take for an application. This along with the above examples should give you a decent starting point.
