Simple if statment not working

Question

I try to write simple query for SQL statment

BEGIN
stmt varchar2(200);
stmt='select dummy from dual';
IF stmt = 'X' THEN
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('X');
ELSE
DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('Unknown');
END IF;
END;
=================================================
BUT GIVE ME GENERAL ERROR ORA-06550+PLS-00103
I Don't have experiance on PL/SQL .

Hints as to why your code doesn't work:
you haven't declared your variable in the right place.
SQL statements don't work like that in PL/SQL - you select into a variable.
assigning a value to a variable is different from checking equality. ie. := vs =
