Simple: returning String parameter
THis sis doubtless basic. I hae a JSP that needs to return data in a parameter that has blanks in it. However, when I print the result of reuqest.getParamter in my sevelt, I ony get the first piece of the String befroe a blank. How can I pass a paramter back to my servlet that contains one or more blanks from a JSP inside a <FORM>? Thanks.

If it is a value of some sort of input, then it should be in quotes:
<input type="hidden" name="whatever" value="Some Text With Spaces"/>
If it is something you are doing manually (like <form action="whatever.do?thing=Some Value with spaces" >) then 1) don't do that, use a hidden input instead. 2) Pass the string through java.net.URLEncoder.encode():
<% String paramValue = java.net.URLEncoder("Some Value with spaces", "UTF-8"); %>
<form action="whatever.do?thingy=<%=paramValue%>" ...>

Dealing with an empty string parameter
I'd think this should be simple but is driving me nuts. I have a string parameter (lets call it Foo) that is being passed from my C# application to a CR subreport. For this parameter field I have a formula associated with "Display String" similar to this:
if (IsNull({?Foo}) or (length({?Foo}) = 0)) then
"Value is empty"
else
"Value is " + {?Foo}
I can never get the "Value is empty" line to appear! I've tried lots of suggestions:
1. trim and check result equal to '' (two single quotes)
2. test if equal to "".
3. Adding false to Suppress.
It appears that if this parameter is the empty string CR simply does nothing with my formulas and the entire parameter field is skipped.
If I pass "null" (or any other special string) instead of "" from my C# code and then change the above test to check for that value as shown below things work properly.

However I really don't like testing for a special string as there is the remote possibility that it could be the actual value of the parameter.
Any help most appreciated.

There is something most odd happening when the string value is empty.
Let me answer your questions.
1 - How are you setting your parameter value?
Since I want to be able to pass parameters to the base report as well as its subreports I'm using this method:

I needed to finish this so I'm closing it.
In my C# code I placed the following:
if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(value))
value = "!_Empty_!";
and in the CR formula I used:
(IsNull({?CoBrandName}) or ({?CoBrandName} = "!_Empty_!"))
Everything is now working just as I want. Not an ideal solution but I gave up. -

MarekThis comes up periodically. It just isn't possible using that type of approach. Probably the best you could do is the create an ADT (containing collections) and use that to pass a 'batch' of information.
Hopefully this will get addressed in the next release of the database. -

I'm building a DLL on LabVIEW and I choose a string as an output on the terminals connectors.
But LabVIEW creates another output, the lenght of the return string.
This is a problem because I have other DLLs and I need them to be compatible.
How do I remove this length from the header? What is the difference between Pascal String and C string and String Handle Pointer?
String Handle Pointer removes the length from the header but I don't know the difference between this data types.

C string pointer is a pointer to a memory location whose string information is terminated by a 0 byte. Pascal String Pointer is a pointer to a memory location where the first byte specifies the number of bytes to follow. This obviously allows only for strings up to 255 character length.
LabVIEW String Handle is a pointer to a pointer to a memory location where the first 4 bytes are an int32 value indicating the number of characters to follow. You can read such a String handle in a function without many problems, but you can only create, resize and delete such a handle by using LabVIEW memory manager functions. So this makes only sense if the caller of such a DLL is LabVIEW too as another caller would have to go through several hoops and tricks in order to gain access to the correct LabVIEW kernel that could provide the memory manager functions to deal with such handles.
Last but not least output strings whose allocated length is not passed to the funciton as additional parameter are a huge secerity risk (talk about buffer overrun errors). LabVIEW DLL Builder does not support the creation of DLLs with output string (or array parameters) without the explicit passing of an additional parameter telling the DLL function how large the allocated size is (so that the DLL function can make sure to never write over the end of the buffer).
The additional length parameter only disappears for String Handles because LabVIEW will simply resize them to whatever length is necessary and that is also the reason why those handles need to be allocated by the same memory manager instance that is also going to execute the DLL function.
Resizing of memory pointers is non-standardized and in normal circumstances not suited for passed function parameters at all.

A single quote/apostrophe in string parameter passed to a Crystal Report with Command datasource connecting to a SQL Server database, using sqljdbc driver does not escape the special character correctly. When doing a preview in the Crystal Reports IDE it allows you to escape the input parameter as expected and work correctly, but through the JRC component it fails. For string parameters without special sql server characters I experience no problems at all. When replacing the Command with a direct table there is also no problem.
Reproduction:
1. create a database db1, create a table table1 with a String type column col1.
2. Create new report Report1.rpt, create a connection to above, Add Command using 'SELECT col1, col2, col3 FROM table1 WHERE col1 = '{?Par1}' . Add a parameter field Par1 : String
3. In your java stand alone application using JRC add the parameter Par1 with a value "Jon Doe's Value" containing a single apostrophe. Export to PDF. (I also tried MSWord and this failed too, similar behavior). Additionally, in another test try to replaceAll("'","''") to escape it, preventing the code to break, but now it does not retrieve the expected row anymore and you end up with an empty report.

I am a relative newbie and have a newbie question.
Can a single quote be used at the beginning of a query string parameter passed to a jsp page? Are there any inherant problems with this? Is there a comprehensive list of characters that must be escaped in a query string parameter?
Example: http://mysite.com/myjsp.jsp?param1='nghdh
ThanksYou'll have to escape most non-letter characters before you can pass them as a URL. I don't know if it's necessary for a single quote, but better safe than sorry.
Either use java.net.URLEncoder(...) or use javax.servlet.http.HttpServletResponse.encodeURL(String). I wouldn't recommend using unescaped characters in your URLs, that might cause pretty funny behavior that's sometimes hard to trace back. Don't worry about decoding it, your JSP/Servlet container will do it when you call javax.servlet.http.HttpServletRequest.getParameter(String). -
Returning strings from OLE2 Word object (Forms 4.5)
Below is an example of how to return string and numeric values from OLE2 objects. In this example the OLE2 object is a MS Word document, and I want to fetch all the bookmarks in the Document into a Forms 4.5 Varchar2. To do this I first need to get the count of bookmarks.
Getting a string property from an OLE2 object is a common OLE2 requirement but is poorly documented. This is the ONLY way it can be done, as OLE2.INVOKE_CHAR returns a single character not a string. Use OLE2.INVOKE_OBJ, then OLE2.GET_CHAR_PROPERTY which does return a string, as shown below, to return a string from an OLE object (or OLE property).
Also note how you can only get the child object from its parent, not the grandchild (etc) object, so multiple (cascading) GET_OBJ_PROPERTY calls are required.

Setting VarChar Variable with String Parameter in Crystal Report Add Command
Setting a VarChar Variable with a String Parameter in a Crystal Report 2008 SP6.3 Add Command is causing an error with a SQL State of 42000. The Error Code depends on which value I select for the parameter. I created the @DateOpt string parameter in the Modify Command window, not in the report. If I comment out line 14 of the SQL the error does not occur.
I have attached the SQL Code and screen shots of the errors. Please tell me what I am doing wrong.Since your parameter is of type STRING, you need to enclose references to it within the Command inside single quotes.
For example, instead of
SET @BeginDate ={?BeginDate}
use
SET @BeginDate ='{?BeginDate}'

Crystal report static string parameter is running with null value too...
Hi All,
I am new to crystal report . I am using crystal report XI and in the report I designed contain one static string parameter. If I not enter any value in that parameter field still myu report get run.As per requirement I dnt want to run report unless user enter any value in that field. How to do it? Please help. any comment is valuable.

One more issue is here,
I have one subreport . In that 'amount ' field is present which have data type as 'character' in database. I convert it in numeric by using following fromula,

when I run report in designer, it works but when I run it on crystal report server it throws error ad "Error in File :Error in formula . 'if NumericText ({Command.AMOUNT}) ' This field name is not known. Details: errorKind "

Returning String data through argument
I need to write a method to call the following method:
int myFunc(char *buf, int code);
Where I need the return value integer and I also want to get back the char * as a string.
I am thinking the most straightforward thing to do would be:
public native int myFunc(StringBuffer sb, int code);
and then in my native code create the return string and use the MethodID functions to call the StringBuffers append() method.
I considered making two functions - one to get the string and one to check for an error, but figured that could cause threading implications in the future.
I assume this is a common issue, is there a recommended solution?

Read Query String Parameter Value in SSRS

We have Project Server 2010 and Sharepoint Server 2010 env and using SSRS 2008 R2 for reporting purpose in Native mode.
Here I am displaying the SSRS Project report in Project Server page using Report Viewer web part like below.
Here I want to read projuid query string parameter value (Highlighthed above in URL ) in SSRS by using any way, so that I can pass that
projuid value in my SSRS report parameter to filter and make this report dynamic.
Right now I have to select the ProjectName (Label) which passes ProjUID
as value from the Parameter, but I want it should read the projuid
from URL so that this reports will display the project the data for the opened Project automatically

For the report parameter, you can get the value from database query or some embedded funcitons etc. or even some customerized function.
You may consider to create your own code for the report to read the projuid from application or URL. The customer code can be used to get the values from the applicaiton or from the url etc. Then report can call the customer code function to get the value.

Return String array in server side
i wrote a bean which contains a function return String array (
String[] ). It shows no error on compile time, and also in
generate jar file. However, when i generate it to an ear file,
the syntax of the wsdl file is not correct so the client can't
call this function becuase the xml can't parse the wsdl.
When i change the return type to String, everything is ok. Does
anybody know what's happen? I really have no idea on it, thx.This is why I wanted to see some code. I wanted to see how you are trying to move the array from one class to another.
This should work... provided that the array is initialised correctly in ClassA. If you are doing it like this, please post some code and I'll help you fix it.
