Simple XMonad Wallpaper

There was a cool haskell background in the screenshot thread, and I decided to make essentially the same thing except with a XMonad logo.
I made the background the specific color #161616 to match with my xmobar and terminal colors. If anyone wants a different background color or color scheme in general, just go ahead and ask. Its not too difficult to change.
Heres a pic of it on my desk:

opothehippo wrote:@SpeedVin: The problem with resizing in gimp (or photoshop for that matter, which I'm using) is that nearly all images created in gimp are raster graphics. That means that resizing them beyond there original size/resolution will create pixelation. The solution is to use vector graphics, which requires additional software. Inkscape is a great free editor available on linux (or windows, but I prefer adobe illustrator). Check out this link for more info on vector/raster graphics.
Thanks for advice I will try to work with Inkscape , but I have two questions.
1.When I try change the size of my file/wall created in gimp (raster graphics) and save the queality of image is only a little better , then that's mean I have to draw my new image in Inkscape (vector graphcips)?
2.Do you know how to save image as jpg or png I tryed option:
Export as bitmap
But I can't set this as wallpaper.
Thanks
1. Yes, you have to recreate the image using inkscape only. I know that in Adobe Illustrator they have a live trace tool to convert Raster to Vector graphics, but thats overpriced mac/windows only software you dont want. If you want to use that arch logo in your drawing (which I assume you do) you can download a .svg file of it. .svg is the Standard Vector Graphics format. Anything in that format is a Vector graphic and can be scaled to any size without a loss in quality. Once you have your vector arch logo in inkspace, then you can start making you creation. If your in to designing graphics, then inkscape is definitely worth learning. Check out Help>Tutorials for a list of tutorials to start learning inkscape.
2. I dont think you can export it as a jpg, but I think a png will work (png is better IMO). This webpage suggests it is under the Export command, but I honestly dont know.
m_l wrote:Can you please redo bribin33's using solid black background? Also I think the one you made for brisbin33 will look even better with the XMonad logo a bit transparent, like what Taters did with the Haskell logo. I think whenever using the background brisbin33 provided, the foreground would look nicer transparent like I stated before. IMHO Now that I look at the logo you made for brisbin33 looks much better than the one with original XMonad colors. It's just that brisbin33 logo just fits better with the xmobar colors.
This is brisbin33's wallpaper with the logo opacity lowered to 70%.
I also made a version with the original xmonad color's, yet slightly transparent.
And a version using brisbin33's suggested colors with a black background.
m_l wrote:Out of these I like the second one, but the XMonad logo is just a bit big. If you could fit the XMonad logo in between the top part and until the slit near the middle, I think that would look nice but using brisbin33's logo.
Like so?
I think it looks a bit better like this:
Keep in mind that once I get the technical aspects of this right, I can change colors and add borders, or use the background pattern.

  • Simple Xmonad configuration help needed.

I have no idea how haskell works at all. But I simply love xmonad!
Could someone help me out with my configuration? It is currently
    import XMonad
    import XMonad.Config.Xfce
    main = xmonad xfceConfig
This works pretty well for me, for the most part. However, I need a few keybinding. First, I want ctrl-alt-arrow to change desktops and I found I can do this with "XMonad.Actions.CycleWS", which I have installed and the configuration of:
    , ("M-<Left>", prevWS )
    , ("M-<Right>", nextWS )
    , ("M-S-<Left>", shiftToPrev )
    , ("M-S-<Right>", shiftToNext )
However, I have no idea how to do this. Also, I would like XF86AudioRaiseVolume to execute "amixer set Master 5dB+" and XF86AudioLowerVolume to "amixer set Master 5dB-" and XF86AudioMute to "amixer set Master toggle". I know I could easily do this with xbindkeys or some other extra keybinding daemon, but I want to learn how to do this the correct way in haskell. Thanks!

Is this your whole xmonad.hs ? Anyway for the keybindings part ( for multimediakeys i use xbindkeys because i use the same xmonad.hs on my laptop plus desktop ) , but you can do it without xbindkeys wich is much nicer, less apps needed. If your keys are already reconignized as XF86AudioMute then you wouldnt have to use xmodmap. You can define keys in two various ways in XMonad with the additional keysP (Util.EZconfig ) or with keys = Mykeys
I always learn from looking into others people's configs , so here is an config from another arch user. Look for the section myKeys, and define something like :
    , ("<XF86AudioLowerVolume>", spawn amixer set Master 5dB+)
if you are interested here is my config

  • The Archer: a simple-ish wallpaper

Made in GIMP, with the Archer logo resized in Inkscape.  This is my first take on this, so I'm happy to hear suggestions or critiques.  Ideally, I'd like to touch it up and post an updated version.

  • Lightroom alters colors - Can I stop this?

Good morning. For the most part I have really enjoyed Lightroom an have used it to adjust many photos without a problem. However, while trying to match a very specific wall color (firebrick red), I noticed that the wall looks different (more vivid, to the red and slightly more saturated) in Lightroom than in any other program I own (none Adobe... sorry, I can't compare) including when applied as simple Windows wallpaper. It is only different in Lightroom.
I have imported and exported photos looking for clues such as preset loading or camera calibrations but found no alterations to these settings. This is with all photos, just less noticable when there is a mix of colors. If this helps, they are jpeg pictures.
Any ideas why it imports colors slightly different? Thanks in advance, Andy

    Paul,
First of all: you're not crazy. Yes, there can be differences in color between color-managed and non-color-managed applications. Even when you're working with a sRGB image.
Second of all: there is no simple easy solution to this 'problem'. Until some de facto standard is set by which all monitors sold to end-users must conform to, there won't even *be* a simple easy solution.
So, now that I've stripped away all your hopes for an easy fix... let's continue. I'm going to try and paint a bit of a radical picture for you so that you might see precisely why this isn't an easy problem to address, and why turning off color-management doesn't guarantee you anything when it comes to how other web users will view your image.
You write: "I agree turning off colour management is madness BUT how else do you see how things will look on the web with a PC".
I must correct you on your own statement, for it should read (corrections in capital letters): "I agree... but how else do you see how things will look on the web with YOUR VERY OWN PC & MONITOR?"
In other words, turning off color-management will show you how the image looks on the web, with no color-management, on YOUR monitor... not the dude's monitor on the other side of the world viewing your image.
Let me further clarify by posing to you a rather extreme scenario:
Say your monitor is dying. It only displays reds with about half as much saturation as it should.
You have all color-management turned off (because, supposedly, you want to see how images would look to other web users who also do not have color-management turned on).
As you're editing your photos, you saturate the heck out of the reds... because your monitor is deficient in displaying them. You just haven't figured that out yet.
Now you upload these photos to the web. Your friends come back to you asking why everybody's faces in your images look as if they're blushing.
You go, 'huh'? Because those images look fine on your monitor, since your monitor is so inefficient at displaying reds...
Now, say, instead, you use color-management. You profile your monitor, and your hardware colorimeter/software intelligently figures out that your monitor can't display reds very well. In the 3-D plot of the generated monitor ICC profile, you see the gamut of your monitor not extend very well into the reds.
Color-managed applications, using this new monitor profile you created, thus enhance reds as they convert the RGB values in your images, on-the-fly, to corrected RGB values using your monitor profile. Suddenly, in color-managed applications, images don't look so dull in the reds anymore, and so you don't skew the saturation of reds in your images. You save the images in the sRGB profile, and then you load them up in Firefox/IE. Suddenly the images look dull in the reds... but now you know better and you exclaim to yourself: "aha! These images look dull in the reds as compared to in my color-managed applications, but that is because of my monitor's deficiency and the fact that Firefox/IE are performing no color-correction! However, my friend happens to have a fine, very sRGB-like, monitor, and when I view my image in Firefox/IE on his computer, it looks fine!"
Thus I hope that this extreme example shows you the utility of color-management.
The goal is not to get images to look the same between color-managed and non-color-managed applications but, rather, to allow you to see the colors of your image in some standardized fashion *in color-managed applications*. That is why we calibrate our monitors. You have no control over what the end-user on the web will see... his/her monitor might be completely wrong... or right. The best you can do is calibrate your monitor so that in color-managed applications you can edit the colors in your photo to how you desire them to be seen on *some arbitrary standard device*. Your monitor itself may or may not be this 'arbitrary standard device'... which is why the monitor profile is helping you to view the image as if it were on some 'standard device'. I guess it's kind of like a pair of eyeglasses -- bringing you toward some standard vision.
Paul, let me give you an anecdotal example:
The original monitor profile that came with my MacBook Pro basically over-saturated my images and super-saturated oranges (in color-managed applications, of course). Every time I viewed my image on the web (not in Safari, though), the image looked desaturated (mostly in the reds/oranges/yellows). I also asked: "Why don't web browsers resaturate images?" But then I learned this question was completely uninformed & nonsensical. Because when I looked at the image on a PC at my lab, it didn't look as desaturated, and also had a lot more yellow to it.
I finally got around to hardware profiling my monitor. The generated monitor profile, in color-managed applications, brought out shadow details, desaturated my images a bit, and re-introduced yellow into my images (and got rid of the orange cast). In fact, made them look much more like what the image looked like on web browsers on a bunch of PCs in my lab (all uncalibrated monitors) than what the image looked like on Firefox on my Mac (non-color-managed). By now you should be able to see that, in the end, it's much better for me to edit images in color-managed apps using my new monitor profile and in color-managed app with color-management turned off, right? Because, with color-management turned off, I will get a desaturated image (what appears in Firefox on my Mac) which I will try to oversaturate -- then this image will look oversaturated on the standard uncalibrated PC (general user view). I would probably also try to introduce some yellows, since, uncorrected, my monitor doesn't display yellows very well. So my images viewed on a more 'standardized sRGB-like' monitor would have appeared more saturated and more yellow! Where are all these inconsistencies stemming from? The simple fact that my LCD monitor on my laptop doesn't have your standard run-of-the-mill sRGB-like response (as many old CRTs DO). So getting the picture nice for non-color-managed applications on my own Mac doesn't guarantee me jack as far as how it'll look on my friend 'Average Joe's' monitor... in fact, in my example above, it would have rendered 'Average Joe' a oversaturated & yellowish image.
Whew, that was a mouthful, and I certainly hope it made sense!
    -Rishi

  • Learning blender: Made simple Arch Linux wallpaper

    Hi,
a few days ago I started to learn blender and I made a very simple wallpaper:
I guess there are lots of similar wallpapers around but I wanted to show mine off anyway
    Hope you like it

Thanks for the tip, but I was thinking about making the shadow less overpowering at the beginning, but decided to let it this way, you will notice, that the shadow is centered and the actual logo is a bit off. That gives balance while moving the motive away from the center. I learned that images most of the time look more interesting when the motive is not exactly centered.
    Maybe I exaggerated the shadow a bit^^
About the light source: It's actually above the logo, what you see at the bottom is the reflection on the ground. Seems it's not placed very well.
From your post it seems to me you think I did draw this, but this is a 3d model.

  • Simple wallpaper question....just now working right?

Love my new new Touch...seems simple enough to set wallpaper; bring up photo, click set wallpaper and voila, but the photo is never there as wallpaper. I'm just wondering, is anyone else having this issue? Whether I use one of my photos, or a photo provided by my iPod it doesn't work, and whether I go through my photos, or my settings to try to set the wallpaper, it just won't set the photo. I don't believe I'm doing any wrong...(scratching head...)

Don't forget to register at ifoundyouriphone.com if you are using wallpaper. The service adds info to your wallpaper so that when you lose it a finder knows how to return it.

  • Phosphorus: a simple wallpaper setter and browser

    Hey all,
I present to you what you can consider a C/GTK3 clone of Nitrogen: Phosphorus. In terms of GTK, Phosphorus one ups Nitrogen, hence the name
Some of you may know I'm on a quest to get rid of GTK2 as much as possible. Nothing technical, just some personal OCD at play here. I had been in contact with Nitrogen's main developer, daf (Dave Foster, not sure if "main" is the correct term but he seems to be the only developer left working on it), regarding porting Nitrogen to GTK3 but he described a lack of time and interest; plus, he said, if there is going to be a re-write, it's probably going to be in Python. In case you are interested, I still have the emails (exchanged in April 2013).
So, I decided to come up with something myself. I just pushed the last fixes to Git and I now think I have something that is in presentable shape. It does not have every feature Nitrogen has (yet), but the basics are all there. Phosphorus can:
Set the wallpaper in five different modes (scaled, centered, tiled, zoomed and zoomed fill) plus a sixth which decides the optimal mode for the current image. Exactly like Nitrogen.
You can pick a color to fill the remaining space. Exactly like Nitrogen.
There is a Preferences Dialog in which you can add new directories to scan for images. Exactly like Nitrogen.
Those directories of course get scanned recursively, this happens in its own thread. Exactly like Nitrogen.
There is a --restore parameter to reset the currently applied wallpaper on boot without starting the whole UI. Exactly like Nitrogen.
    Obligatory screenshot:
As you can see, nothing really stands out over Nitrogen. I have tried to stick as close to the "original" as possible, since I know so many people love it. There is a lot left to implement, as you can read below:
Q: What does Nitrogen do that Phosphorus does not?
A: for now, quite a lot! Phosphorus currently only works for single monitor setups. I plan on adding this, but I suspect this will take some time as I have no experience regarding this. Also, Nitrogen stores the thumbnails it creates in the $XDG_CACHE_HOME/thumbnails directory for faster startups. I still have to look into this, as well. Nitrogen also has complete commandline support, Phosphorus does not. Phosphorus also does not support sorting the images, for which Nitrogen has several options and lastly, Nitrogen also has support for inotify to automatically add new images if they get placed in a watched folder while Nitrogen is open. I'm not sure if I will implement this.
For those curious about the source, you can grab it from GitHub: https://github.com/Unia/phosphorus
If you are excited about this project, there are numerous ways to help me out:
    Patches are always welcome!
Phosphorus can be translated! Instructions for this can be found in the README; you can check which languages are currently supported inside the po/ folder in the repository. Translating should not take more than five minutes of your time and really helps to polish the product.
Testers are always nice to spot setup-specific bugs! Feel free to report anything unusual you spot, or annoyances you think I can do better!
Thanks for reading and I look forward to your feedback!

  • I can't change my iPad Mini home screen wallpaper at all, not even a default. I can't change my lock screen either. Help! I'd rather not waste my time bothering with computer programs so please give me a SIMPLE solution if you can.

How do I change my seemingly unfixable iPad Mini Home Screen and Lock Screen wallpapers?

I tried that and that is what initially started this. I wanted a new wallpaper for my home screen and it didn't work so I reset it. The wallpaper is now zoomed in, I can't zoom it back out, and I can't change it to the new one I want. Plus, recently I had reset it and it stayed at the Appe logo and didn't move and I got scared that I'd never be able to use it again, I tried random things and it turned on again. I think I was just lucky so I don't want it to happen again. And yes I did look up how to fix it but it was really complicated so I just did what I mentioned.

  • Simple Arch Linux Wallpaper Generator

Hello everyone. I was always annoyed about nice looking, but old wallpapers not available in my resolution. So I wrote a wallpaper generator in C, which can create the same, sharp impression of my simplistic wallpaper on nearly every possible screensize.
You can grab the code at https://github.com/thillux/WPGenerator and create my wallpaper in your favourite resolution.
For a first look, visit http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/553/wallpaperrj.png (1920x1200, 2 MB) or
    http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/8862/wallpapersk.png (1920x1200, 161 KB).

I implemented only one wallpaper. You can only change the amount of lines and circles.
    Edit:
I've made some parameters for that in the recent version.
./WPGenerator --width WIDTH --height HEIGHT --circles NUM_CIRCLES --waves NUM_WAVES
    With
./WPGenerator --width WIDTH --height HEIGHT --random
    you can choose them randomly.
I wrote this to get myself in touch with the cairo library. Thought it would be nice to have the possibility to create the wallpaper in your resolution without asking the wallpapers creator to do it for you, even in some years with new screen resolutions. I'm not pleased to see cool stuff created in 2001 only in 1280x1024. For sure, such a generator may never can output what others are capable of to do with Gimp, Photoshop and friends. If you are interested in other wallpapers, I can generate some more.
It would also be possible implement a feature to create a wallpaper with a monthly calender or a field for news from something like an RSS feed and call the program every $(your time here) to update it.
So if you like the basic idea, please let me hear about your criticism or provide feature requests.

    Hello everyone,
Here is my submission for the contest with 7 wallpapers (I know it's a lot... but I was inspired so... ^^ )
For the 2 first ones, I wanted some classic good looking wallpapers with the MSI Dragon being the center of it, with some high quality effects. So here they are, a bright version and a dark one.
    Hope you guys like it.
For the 5 next ones, I tried something really different. More in an advertising campaign way. Some minimalist looking wallpapers, trying to focus on simple things, no shadow effect. Art on it's purest form, simple but well thought.
I asked myself why people would chose MSI instead of another brand, so I figured the people who already know that. So I first started with the "Gamers know why" because it's obvious, then went to an iconic e-sport legend ("Legends Know Why") Mr. Patrik 'cArn' Sättermon, I think he and the Fnatic team clearly represent why people should chose MSI. So I used the Fnatic team for the third one "Winners know why", they are clearly one of the best multigaming team of the world and are sponsored by MSI for quite a few years now. (The picture is from the IEM 5 For the 4th one, I noticed that I start to see more and more MSI laptops around me, at college etc, so I thought that "The World knows why". And for the last one I tried to represent the spirit around the MSI Dragon and the whole Gaming part of MSI, that feeling of POWER. So I tried to make that last one a combination of the 2 styles. Representing the Power coming out of the Dragon... in a minimalist way. So here's "Unleash the Dragon". I hope I succeed. And I really hope you like my work. It took me several hours to complete that "campaign" and I'm really proud of it. I used the "#" system in it because as I made it as an advertising campaign, I thought it would be nice if everyone could share that spirit easily.
The picture of cArn and the one of the Fnatic team are from the internet, the rest comes from my personal pictures (textures and such) and of course everything is homemade.
    Cheers.
