Size of Exported Excel file is very large

Hi,
I have a report that has around 10000 rows and 5 columns. When I export to excel, the excel file is very big, around 15MB.
But If the file is opened, and saved again , the size reduces to around 13MB.
Any suggestions on how to reduce the file size of the exported Excel file. I would prefer to export it to excel rather than CSV format.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks....
ViVa1

Hi, actually as you have probably noticed the size grows a lot due to the use of different styles and formatting.
If you do not require any formatting then I would recommend you to consider a CSV file format again because it will result in the smallest file size which you can achieve with exporting.
Also for the future referencing SQL Server 2008 R2 exports reports only in XLS format, but SQL Server 2012 by default will export into a new XLSX file format which is a compressed (zipped XML based format) so the resulting files will be significantly smaller.
For example I created a small project to test exporting of 10000 x 5 data to an Excel file. I used this
.NET Excel component to create various spreadsheet files, it has a straightforward API for
exporting DataTable into an Excel file in .NET so you can test this out yourself with ease. The output files, without any formatting applied to them, have the following sizes: XLS (~1MB), XLSX (~300KB) and CSV (~250KB).

  • Buffered TDMS file still very large

Hello, I am trying to to stream to a TDMS file. I am writing approximately 10 channels of data at 20 Hz. I was creating a new file evey 5 mins or so and defragging the file once I was finished with it, which was giving me a reasonable size of file. I decided that I would like to make bigger files (over the period of hours) and the the defragging would be too computationally costly to do on the fly. I have been trying to set a buffer for the TDMS files but the resultant files are very large. You can tell the file isn't being writen until its closed (from watching its size in windows explorer) which suggests the file is being buffered. However its about 6 times bigger than an ASCII file of the same data, with and index almost as big again.
Does anyone have any ideas why it would appear to buffer but not actually  reduce the data size. I'm running Windows XP, LabVIEW 10.0.
When I create each new file I run this to set the buffers. (I have also hard wired in a buffersize of 100000 on a one minute file to no avail.
    Niall
    Thanks
    Niall

I has this marked as the solution but it turns out it only helped one of my programs. I am still getting very large (fragmented) TDMS and index files for another program. The problem is that if I just defrag the (supposedly buffered) file, it interupts the data logging because it takes so long. I'm 99% sure that it *is* buffereing as it doesn't write till it closes the file, and if I use the read properties function it reads back a set buffer size. Here is the VI that actually writes the data. There bit at the top is for writing an optional acii file so you can ignore that.
Its maybe a bit hard to see whats going on in the next one, but this is where the file is created before being passed to the setbuffer VI which I posted earlier. It also closes that last file
Its really hacking me off now and holding me up from going no to other stuff. It would be great if someone had some ideas.
    Thanks

  • Problem opening exported Excel file

    Hi
We recently experienced a problem that has never occurred before. When trying to open an exported Excel file from a query with hierarchical structures (using the link <SAP_BW_URL DATA_PROVIDER="DP" CMD="EXPORT" FORMAT="XLS"> on the 0ANALYZER template), we are asked to log on to the BEx web, as if it's a Web application. If it is an Excel exported from a hierarchy-free query, then the file open directly without the logon prompt. According to the user, he used to be able to open downloaded hierarchy-expanded data without going through the logon process.
Has anyone experienced the same problem before? Can you share you solution to help us? Thank you in advance!

If I understand your issue correctly we used a different fix. Very easy to do.
First, what I believe is happening is that your icons for the hierarchy are being exported as a reference with absolute URL (images can not be exported). This means that when Excel opens the file it tries to resolve the URL and to do that it requires a login.
You can verify that absolute URLS are being exported by opening your excel export in a text processor (its actually XML). Look for URLS that start "http://.../MIME/BEx/Analyser/xxxx.gif". which are icons.
This took us quite a while to figure out because excel was not asking us to log in. It just timed out for each URL reference. Took forever.
The fix we used was to add the following entry to this table on your BW system... (LANG must be empty), Caption is optional:
    Table=RSZCONTROLTEXTS,
    Entry=
      Lang = "",
      TARGET_ID="ID_FLAG_XLS_ABS_URL",
CAPTION=”Force Excel Export to use relative URLs in XML output for icons”
You can experiment with results before you try by editing your XML file (the excel export from web) and removing from those icon URLS the "http:...." up to Mime. This makes it a relative URL. The down side is that it cannot find the icon and displays a box with an X in it. I believe there are techniques for importing icons into excel. They would look like this after surgery <img src="Mime/BEx/Analyzer/hieric2.gif">
If you implement the fix and don't like the effect just remove the entry from the table and all is back to before. I do not believe this is a transportable fix though.
We discovered it when we were pretesting a bunch of service pack upgrades. See SAP note #650887
    Hope this helps

  • WEBI report present different in exported excel file

    Hello expert,
I create a line chart in webi, and I create a table block to cover the x axies label for the line chart.  this presentation looks perfect in WEBI report, but when I export it into excel file, the x axies labels for the line chart showed up with that table block moved down a little bit.  how can I present WEBI in the same way in the exported excel file?

    Hi,
If your requirement is to hide labels or  X Axis values from the chart ..You can do this directly unchecked the check box for values or labels from the  X Axis properties.
For to adjust the table block and line chart  right click on the  Cell go to Align ->Relative Position and in the bottom section adjust the  height  from  the particular block.
    Hope this helps you.
    Thanks,
    Amit

  • Log and transfer, my transfered files become very large...

When I use Log and transfer, my files become very large. For instance, The card that I'm transferring from only holds 32G and after I transfer the footage to an external drive it has become around 70G. I checked the codec on transfered files and its showing apple pro res 422 1920 x 1080. Is there an import setting I'm missing? This is all new to me...

    This is normal.
Your camera likely shoots AVCHD, a highly compressed version of MPEG 4.
It is so compressed because it uses a "Long GOP" format where only every 15th frame is independent (i frame).
Those in between only contain the differences to the prior i frame and cannot exist without it.
(It's actually somewhat more complicated, but now you know what it is called, you can do more research)
You need the ability to edit on any frame, however. The footage is transcoded to make every frame independent so you can do just that. It takes more space.

  • How to set the size of an Excel-file,Java created in tabbed forma

    Hi all,
I'm creating an Excel-file by writing data to an outputStream in tabbed format.
My problem is : How can I set the width of the columns of that Excel-file, not the default-size?
If anyone can help, that would be very nice.
    Thanks a lot,
    Regards,
    Tim

You can write a generic xls file containing a Macro to open and set the column widths of text or csv files. Your java program can then call this generic file to open your text files.

  • Graph data causes VI file to very large

My VI reads data files with up to 500,000 data points and displays them in various formats in graphs.  If I "make current values default" with all these graphs populated the file size when I save the VI is very large (72 MB).  Is there any way to not save the all the graph data with the VI and just the parameters so that the VI starts the same way the next time I open it to process a new set of data?  I don't need all the graphs to be populated when I start again.

    72MB!
Be aware that you don't have to make eveything default. You can programmatically set only the necessary items to Default with a property node when the program starts and/or ends. My point being, you shouldn't have to "make current values default" then save.

  • .MOD to .MOV File gew very large following conversion

I had a .MOD file on my JVC that was 1.5GB in size (approximately 27mins in length) and I wanted to get it over to iMovie HD. I used software called 'mpegstreamclip' to covert it to a .MOV file. The conversion was successful and the video quality is very good when played back on Quicktime, but now the size of the .MOV file is 6GB and now I can't get it from iMovie HD onto a DVD. How did it become so large??
The other .MOD files on my camera, about 6 of them, I converted as well and they relatively remained the same size that the .MOD was.
    Bill

You don't say what KIND of .mov you converted to. You should have converted to DV, which is iMovie's native format. DV is 13GB per hour of running time. DV is so large to allow editing.
As mentioned, iDVD cares just about running time, not the size of the iMovie project (or its components).

  • OEDQ 11 - error.connection.externaldatasource - While trying to export excel file into local drive

Even I tried creating a excel file in my local and point that file in EDQ - Data Stores connection , still getting the same error message.
    Please help.
    Thanks!

    Also useful to understand:
    - Is it a server-side or client-side data store?
    - Is it an XLS or an XLSX file you are trying to write?
    - What's the data volume?

    Greetings,
Is is possible to use a web service to transmit a file, sometimes a very large file? If so, what are the security implications of doing such a thing?

Quick answer: It depends... Did you try using Google to look-up examples of doing this? Here is a url to try: http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&source=hp&q=web+service+transfer+file&pbx=1&oq=web+service+transfer+file&aq=f&aqi=g1g-j3g-b1&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=1984731l1997518l0l1997874l25l19l0l1l1l0l304l3879l0.7.10.1l18l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.&fp=7caaed5eb0414d97&biw=1280&bih=871

  • Problems appearing when exporting excel file into numbers file

    Hello,
I have a Problem, need HELP!!
I have an excel file with graphics, and data are written on graphs: these data are percentages. When I export my excel file on numbers (becomes therefore a numbers file), my problem appears: When I have for example 24% on a graph, it becomes 0.24 and I can't find the way to write it 24% again.
Also I have a problem with graphics titles: when I export the excel file into numbers, graphics title are not correctly centered anymore and I cannot find the way to fix them correctly...
    Thanks a lot!!!!

It seems that only sectorial charts may display percent.

Sounds as if you are in cases where the charts are imported as a single graphic block, not as different components.

  • Export excel file

When I export a data base for an excel file, is it possivel that some columns have a "general" format and others a "number" in the file?
    Thanks
    Miguel

Yes, that is possible, cause Excel interprets the data and assigns the type to them. A <censored> "feature" in excel.

  • Print whole answer as pdf (not as export excel file)

Dear, we are receiving some info (information of sessions designed by people) with text fields with no limits of characters.
Would it be possible the text box is growing as the people write more or less? Instead of having a "fix box size" with a scrollbar when the text is over the size of the box...
We would like then to print the pdf's with all the text, so an option is also if we can just have a way to print all the text, again from the pdf, not from the excel file with all the answers.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi;
A feature in a Paid level subscription (Basic and Plus) is downloading a PDF of the response from the View Responses tab by selecting any response row and choosing "Download Response as PDF Form".  This downloads a PDF of the response with all multi-line text fields expanded to fit all the text the user input so it can be printed.
    Thanks,
    Josh
