Size of select-list

Hi,
I was told that a select list cannot be bigger than 32K - is this still true or has this bug been fixed for version 3?
If this is still true, then how do I avoid getting problems if the select-list becomes bigger than 32K?
Thanks.

Hello user629987 (please tell us your name, we're a friendly group),
I'm not sure about the limit but it's entirely possible. I guess I'm wondering how useful a huge 32k+ select list would be? Have you considered using a pop-up LOV?

John

  • Size of select lists

    I am a newbie to app express have a query.
    I have defined dynamic LOV's using select list with submit.
    I have 5 of these LOV's.
    Based on the selection in the LOV's & a GO button i run a report.
    My question is regarding the size of the LOV's. they get sized based
    on the size of the data that gets populated in the LOV.
    Is there a way I can set the size as say fixed size 30 or something of
    that sort.

    Kostya,
    In the HTML Form Element Attributes of your select list put the following:
    style="width:195px"
    and all the select list items will have the width of 195px.

  • How do i change the size of a select list?

    Hello everyone,
    I know this is probably a newbie questiopn but i spent some time trying and already browsed for the forum to look and found nothing related to it.
    I m using apex 3.1, and i would like to know in what part of the item i define it's size, in the case of a select list where do i put it's size?
    In html i would do it like this:
    -----------------HTML CODE--------------------------
              <select size="18" class="bigselect">
                   <option>Mapa 1</option>
                   <option>Mapa 2</option>
                   <option>Mapa 3</option>
                   <option>Mapa 4</option>
              </select>
    -----------------HTML CODE--------------------------
    i already tried these and nothing:
    HTML Table Cell Attributes
    HTML Form Element Attributes <--- this one says i can t define id and size in it
    Form Element Option Attributes
    thanks and best regards

    Hi,
    I misunderstood you the first time :)
    It seems like APEX is automatically setting the SIZE attribute to 1 when you create a Select List. I'm not sure if you'll manage to change this value before the page is rendered. But if it is really important to you, maybe you can change this attribute after the page is rendered using javascript.
    Add this function to the page header section:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    function setLovSize(){
        var x=document.getElementById("PX_MY_SELECTLIST")
        x.size="18"
    </script>Then on the same page, put the following code into Page HTML Body Attribute:
    onLoad="setLovSize();"Hope this helps.

    First of all, I wouldn't use a multiselect list but a shuttle item since this is much better from the handling point of view. Second, the Patrick's comment is valid. You could use the filetering on the shuttle like in this example
    http://apex.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=31517:166
    where your approach would be to show no results by default and give a user a chance to reduce the nubmer of options by choosing some groups from a select list or by typing in some sting.

  • Select List size limitation

    Needs some advice. I have some very large select lists in some of my dynamic pages. I am using the Report Region template and APEX_ITEM to create them (see below).
    SELECT to_char(APEX_ITEM.SELECT_LIST_FROM_LOV_XL(2,'%null%','SCHOOL TYPE')) FIELD2
    from dual;
    In 11g, when I have a select list that has lots of entries I get
    report error: ORA_22035, Buffer to small for CLOB to CHAR conversion (max 4000 actual 4000).
    I tried the same thing on 10g, and it worked. Oracle said it is not a bug, that I should:
    1) select the field without using
    APEX_ITEM, but change the 'Display As' to select list. But this loses the 'Read Only' condition capability
    2)change to APEX_ITEM type to POP_UP LOV (which looks old)
    Not sure what changed for 10g to 11g to make it not work anymore.
    Any advice on the best way to get around this.

    This one has been asked / answered a lot, but in summary you shouldn't use a select list with more than say 100-500 rows. Even if you could create one with 10k rows, it would be a nightmare to scroll through and it would make your page HUGE in terms of kb. It sounds like you're using a tabular form so now you multiply huge select list times the number of rows and you get MASSIVE page (think megabytes, not kilobytes). Use a popup key lov instead.

  • Using multiple select lists in ADF

    Hi,
    I am trying to use a multiple select list in my JSP page, and have a method in the ApplicationModule be called when the Struts action is called. I am following the example ADF tutorials, where the method is added to the ApplicationModule class, then dragged onto the Stuts Flow diagram (to associate it with an action).
    I am able to create a dyna form bean for the page that contains the multi select as a type "java.lang.String[]" (string array). I am able get that values that were selected in a normal action's "execute" method. For example:
    msf = (DynaActionForm) form;
    String[] statusSelection = (String[]) msf.get("multSelectList");
    However, I cannot seem to get the "multSelectList" values into a method in my Application Module class. The "multSelectList" is defined in my dynaFormBean as a String[] type. I am passing it in as an argument like the following....
    public void setParams(String multSelectList[]) {
    This results in the method not being called at all. I am not sure why. Does this have something to do with a String[] not being serializable??
    However, if I just attempt to pass other types form items to the method, it works. For example:
    public void setParams(String simpleCheckbox) {
    Does anyone know how to use multiple select lists in conjunction with ADF?
    P.S.
    my multSelectList looks something like this:
    <select name="multSelectList" multiple size="5">
    <option value="ALL">Select All</option>
    <option value="preferred">Preferred</option>
    <option value="standard">Standard</option>
    <option value="approved">Approved</option>
    <option value="interim">Interim</option>
    </select>

    I got this working by changing the signature of the Application Module method to use ArrayList rather than String[], then you can marshal the Struts FormBean contents into an ArrayList to pass up.
    To do this, subclass the DataAction by using "Go To Code" off of the context menu and then override the initializeMethodParameters() method:
      protected void initializeMethodParameters(DataActionContext actionContext, JUCtrlActionBinding actionBinding)
        //Get the String Array from the Form Bean
        String[] selection = (String[])((DynaActionForm)actionContext.getActionForm()).get("multiSelect");
        //convert that to an ArrayList
        ArrayList selectionArr = new ArrayList( Arrays.asList(selection));
        //Add that object to the Arg List for the AM method
        ArrayList params = new ArrayList();
        params.add(selectionArr);
        actionBinding.setParams(params);
      }

  • Select List Performance Issue in Apex 3.1.2

    Hi
    It would of great help if you could suggest us for the following
    We are facing some issues in Select List performance in Apex 3.1.2 version.
    We have 6 select list and all have been cascaded i.e., values of each select list based on pervious list value.
    Values in each select list are huge. Because of this, the performance is very slow.
    It takes huge time to fetch the data based on other list values.
    We cross verified in backend, the same query takes less time compared to the Application.
    Any recommedation to fine tune this?
    Thanks in advance
    Vijay

    if your select lists are very huge then it could be the browser that is causing the slow down.
    try and create an example using a static HTML file containing a select list of the same size and you may find the same performance issue.
    a quick way to create the test would be to save the source of your APEX page as a html file

  • Dynamic select list with more than one value?

    I am creating a simple CRUD component for our company's Joomla site. This component allows our users to create discount bundles for our cart according to shopper group and products.  I've been using Dreamweaver to author the administrator forms and have run into a bit of a problem.  All of my forms work properly, but I need to be able to collect two values from each chosen multi-select listing.
    Right now, when a user chooses an item under 'products', the site pushes back product_id, one of the variables I need.  I would also like product_parent_id to return with each result as well.  I need to be able to insert product_parent_id after the user has chosen their desired products.  product_parent_id is located in the same table as product_id.
    In the end, I need those two values to be pushed to another table, essentially creating a new entry for each product in the bundle.  Referenced by ID and parent ID.
    Pasted below is the administrator form code.  Any suggestions would be wonderful.

    You want to order an result on a attribute that you don't have. This is not possible from a logical point of view.

After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Subquery in SELECT list vs join

    If I'm not mistaken, both queries below are functionally the same. Both return all rows from table1 and only show a value for table2.F7 if the first 4 characters of F7 equal F2.
    My thoughts are this... It's nice that a subquery can be used in a select list, but it looks like, with all the sql I've written which uses that approach, I could have just as well used the join approach. Is this always true? Can someone show me as example where using a subquery in the select list is hands-down the better approach?
    SELECT table1.F2,
    (SELECT table2.F7 FROM table2 WHERE substr(table2.F7,1,4) = table1.F2)
    FROM table1
    SELECT table1.F2, table2.F7
    FROM table1, table2
    WHERE table1.F2 = substr(table2.F7,1,4)(+)
    Let me add that, in my top example, multiple rows will never be returned by the subquery. If that were the case, then the join approach would be the only option.

    Probably there is no general answer and you'll always have to check separately.
    In the following example the scalar subquery turns out to be slightly more efficient than an outer join (15 gets versus 13 gets and compare the elapsed time):
