Slicing and Chopping

I'm using Illustrator CS5 on OSX 10.6.8. I'm using AI for print ads. When I save the files and reopen them, the elements are chopped up into pieces and and backgrounds combined with masked images. I cannot figure out how to disable this or retain my content as I compose it. It's difficult to edit the files later. Can someone help understand this function an how to prevent it from doing this?
As you can probably tell, I'm new to Illustrator.
Thanks

Well we are a professional art dept; the problem is this particular project has requirements we aren't accustomed to. We've used Illustrator since it came out, but only for creating supporting vector art for our primary composition apps which over the years changed from Multi-Ad Creator, to Quark to In-Design. So composing ads in Illustrator and saving them down to 8 is very unusual to us (hence the questions). As for the warming, unfortunately, the files were saved down prior to me getting them, so I was never presented with a warning dialog with the command-s (since the file was already in a legacy version). However, I was able to pass your suggestions on to the person giving me the files and saving the file to native CS5 indeed fixed the problem (thank you). But I need to explain to the client that they can either have a legacy file as they required, or an editable one (another requirement). They can't have it both ways. Thank you for your time and help with this.

    Very bad practice to just use image slices into your website.

  • Data slicing and dicing

    Hi,
    What is the difference between data slicing and data dicing?

    Hi,
    Slice and Dice
    The ability to move between different combinations of dimensions when viewing data with an OLAP browser.
    Multidimensional analysis tools organize the data in two primary ways: in multiple dimensions and in hierarchies.
    Slicing and dicing refers to the ability to combine and re-combine the dimensions to see different slices of the information. Picture slicing a three-dimensional cube of information, in order to see what values are contained in the middle layer. Slicing and dicing a cube allows an end-user to do the same thing with multiple dimensions.

  • Sliced and imported photoshop layout into dreamweaver

    First, I am a newbie to all of this web design stuff and
    coding and dreamweaver. I wanted to create my first website so here
    I am. I went through 2 different tutorials (youtube and on
    lynda.com) I created a layout in photoshop and I also sliced it. I
    imported it into dreamweaver (CS3 by the way).....I somewhat
    understand what I am doing. I did all the defining a site and I
    clicked on the content box that I sliced and deleted it and
    inserted a div / added the image that go there, then I made that
    area editable. The layout I imported I saved it as a
    template.Anyway, so basically I am clicking on each sliced area,
    deleting it, and inserting a div there. No problem. Now, the sliced
    areas that has about, home, contact, etc.....those I needed to make
    as links/clickable images. So, before performing the delete then
    inserting a div part.....I first clicked on the sliced area then at
    the bottom of the screen, where it says link, I did a point to
    file, basically linked it. Now, when I preview it in the browser,
    it displays boxes around the sliced navigation menu, which it is
    nit suppose to. see here is a screen shot...
    http://i36.tinypic.com/2eowewm.jpg
    What did I do wrong? Why is it showing up in a table when I
    didn't create it in a table? How can I remove that purple looking
    table border?
    Also, when I go to each of the sliced navigation menu, then
    delete it and insert a div..... the image there...it will not let
    me turn it into a link.
    How do I turn my sliced navigation menu images into links. I
    know I am doing something wrong but just don't know what it is. Is
    there a code I can use or am I suppose to modify or insert
    something? and how do I remove the box from around it?
    What is an easy way? Is there a tutorial out there?
    I want my layout to look like what I mocked up in photoshop.
    Is there a way I can create the same layout in dreamweaver? The
    problem isn't the background, it's trying to get the pink area in
    the center of the lalayout. I didn't know how to do that so thats
    why I tried the way of creating it in photoshop.
    Please help

  • Cutting, slicing and erasing PHOTOS and imported images in Illustrator cs4!

    Hey everyone,
    Could someone help me out?
    I was wondering how would i do this, either of the following, cutting with scissor tool, slicing with knife or erasing photos with the erase tool which have just been brought into Illustrator? I know where the tools are located, but what are the steps, do i need to convert the image into a certain type of element/graphic, rasterize, use clipping mask ini some way etc?
    Thanks heaps guys!

    It's been a long time since this was posted but I wanted to throw an answer out there for anyone still looking to do this.
    A couple easy ways that may work for your project is:
    1. A Clipping Mask. Create a shape over the photo, any shape. Then select both the shape and the photo. Once the shape and the photo are selected go to Object> Clipping Mask> Make. This will crop your photo to what ever shape you created on top. It's an easy way to trim any unwanted parts of your photo.
    2. With your photo selected, click the direct selection tool (the white arrow), and directly alter and resize your photo (without effecting the proportions) using the anchor points shown around your photo. Sometimes you have to click your object then click anywhere outside your object to see the anchor points.
    Hope this helps!

  • Slicing and optimising a template in PS CS3?

    Hello, I am just working on a website design in photoshop but now I would like to slice and optimize the template in imageready but I've just noticed that ImageReady is not available any more? Could someone please suggest how I can slice the design up without using ImageReady? Would I need to use fireworks? Does anybody know where I can read some tutorials?
    Thank you, Ryan

    Photoshop CS3 is capable of slicing. You will find the slice tool in the tool bar.

  • Slicing and dicing with FW CS4?

    Hi there,
    I am having a few issues understanding FW CS4 and where it
    fits in the market, but i think i am understanding it now and was
    looking for some confirmation and advice.
    Basically i have created my website in PS CS4 and i am ready
    to slice and dice which i would normally do in PS but weather i am
    missing something it appears that once i export to html and slices
    i will need to edit the CSS and fine tune it i.e. Absolute
    positioning, etc etc..
    It appears FW CS4 supports more advanced slicing features ...
    so i was wondering if i do the following, is this considered the
    recommended way ??
    Create my design etc in PS (due to it being quite advanced -
    and i just don't see the same features in FW)
    Import my PSD into FW CS4
    Slice in FW and export after customising each DIV etc
    I don't know if anyone can help me here????
    Is this right? or should i still do my slicing in PS?? I
    presume not as FW seems more powerful
    FW also seems to support exporting to EXTERNAL css file...
    I look forward to any info anyone can offer

    I agree with Linda regarding the creation of the design. If
    there is
    something in particular you are trying to do in PS and can't
    find the
    equivalent in FW, please let us know.
    If you follow the guidelines in the tutorials below, FW will
    generate a
    relatively positioned layout, using floats. If objects
    (slices, text or
    rectangles) overlap, FW switches to Absolute Positioning.
    If you are planning to use the CSS and images export in
    Fireworks, I
    strongly recommend you read the tutorials listed below.
    Chances are,
    yes, you will need to fine tune the CSS after exporting from
    Fireworks.
    >>> So i would use the html that was exported to
    either fine tune it
    or use it as reference etc
    It could go either way, but I think you would have a better
    chance using
    the CSS generated from FW by installing the new CSS export
    script (3rd link)
    >>>I presume its better to have all images as
    "background" images on a
    div etc, does FW CS4 take care of this?? if so how?? ...
    otherwise i
    presume i just need to edit the css manually?
    If the graphics are just cosmetic then yes, it's probably a
    good idea to
    set them as background images. FW has both foreground and
    background
    slices. You choose which you want from the Property
    inspector. FW will
    export them accordingly.

  • Help required for slicing and merging file

    Hi,
    I am working on p2p downloading application based on Gnutella. Right now i am trying to implement downlaoding one file from many hosts at a time(like limewire does). i am able to connect to multiple host. but dont know how to downlaod and merge file for his purpose.
    i know how to download one file from single host. but dont know how to handle file coming from multiple hosts.
    if anyone having knowledge, please tell as soon as possble.

    Hi.
    thanks for the reply. Actually i had something same
    in my mind. but unfortunately i am quite week in
    serializtion and file stuff. If you could provide me
    with code snipet for this, or can just simulate in a
    fewer lines of code, it would be a great help for
    me...i have too much short time...
    i think i really have to study this file
    stuff..........You shouldn't use serialization. Just invent a protocol, and "normal" binary data.

  • Slicing and optimising form ps to dw.

    hello forumers.
    id like to know since i like to design,would it be wise to do my layouts,btn,banners etc etc in ps and then export them to dreamweaer for further
    functions?what are the pros and cons for this method?i seem to be getting too confused designing in dreamwevaer i cant place images and text where i want,but in ps i can design as i like.
    thank you

    Use your graphics apps for images only.
    Use DW to build your HTML/CSS code and menus.
    Image based menus suck and they're a real chore to change later when your site changes. Use CSS styled list menus instead. DW F1 (help) Spry vertical or horizontal menus.
    It is very helpful to start new projects with a pre-built CSS layout.  Give some thought to how you want your web pages to display before you dive in to the deep end.
    Liquid (% based),
    Fixed-width (px based)
    Elastic-width (em based);
    1-column, 2-column, 3-column or grid style.  Choosing the right layout initially will greatly simplify placement of your page elements later.

  • Slicing and exporting to Dreamweaver question

    I use Fireworks and then slice up my comp and export as
    nested tables to Dreamweaver. What I would like to do is export it
    with the image pieces as the background of the table cells with a
    transparent gif overlay, to help prevent image theft. I know no
    method is fool proof, but is there a way to do this in Fireworks
    without having to manually go back and change all of the image
    pieces to the background of the cells?

    Not really, no. And of course by "no" I mean, sortof ... I'm
    fairly certain
    you could use javascript and the FW API to create a command
    to do this, but
    I imagine this would be HUGELY complicated and not for the
    faint of heart.
    FYI: modern web design practices discourage the use of tables
    to lay out
    your web pages. Tables should only be used for displaying
    tabular data (ex.
    stats). Instead you should be using div & span tags along
    with CSS to lay
    out your site(s). In the long run this will give you a LOT
    more flexibility
    as your sites grow and become more complicated

  • Slicing and roll over effects

    I am trying to create a roll over image effect that is giving
    me a hard time. I have a picture of apple pie, with 6 slices. I
    wanted to have a pop up window display with the ingredients for
    each slice a person rolled the mouse over.
    (6 different slices making one whole pie apple, blueberry,
    cherry, etc you get the idea). When I tried this in image ready, I
    had the slices cut up, but the pop up window was larger than the
    actual slice, so only a portion of the info displayed. Is there a
    way I can create a slice and have the roll over effect or pop up
    window display larger than the hotspot slice? Its kinda hard to
    describe, but I think you can understand what Im trying to do. The
    ingredients list is much larger then the pie slice hotspot.
    I cannot get my brain around how to make this happen. I know
    theres a way, I just dont know how.
    Thanks for any advice on this.

    A rollover replaces one image with another. You can do a
    standard rollover, replacing the image your mouse rolls over or a
    disjoint rollover, where you replace a different image.
    A pop-up generally requires a click and is done in
    JavaScript. In the pop-up window, you can specify whether or not
    you have scroll bars.
    You might also check into setting overlapping divs and
    changing the visibility of the layers depending on mouse movement,
    but...that's probably going to require you to code the JavaScript
    by hand.
    Anyway, what is it you want? A rollover image or a pop-up
    window?

  • NSString slicing and dicing

    I'm finding string processing very cumbersome in ObjC.  For example, I have the NSMutableString *board set to "abcde" (or whatever) and I want to insert blanks between each letter.  Here's what I've written:
        // Perl equivalent:  $boardDisplay = join('_', split(//, $board));
        NSMutableString *boardDisplay; // temp buffer in which to build display string
        [boardDisplay setString:@""];  // init to empty string (necessary?)
        for (int i = 0; i < self.wordLength; ++i) { // one letter at a time
            [boardDisplay
                appendString:
                    [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%C",[self.board characterAtIndex:1]]
            // Don't append a trailing '_'
            if (i < self.wordLength - 1 )
                [boardDisplay
                    appendString:
                    [NSString stringWithFormat:@"%C", (unichar) ' ']
        self.boardLabel.text = boardDisplay; // finally, move display text onto UI
    Is there any easier way to do this?  Assembler language, perhaps?  :-)
    Have I left out any memory management issues?

    a lot of the stuff I do has always heavily involved text processing.  NSString is clearly not cut out for that
    I wouldn't go that far. There are an awful lot of methods you can call. Sometime you may have to think of things slightly differently than you did before. It may be a bit "wordy" but that will have no impact on the final performance. For example, you could probably separate each character in a string with a space by doing something with "enumerateSubstringsInRange:options:usingBlock:" Try this:
    #include <Cocoa/Cocoa.h>
    int main(void)
      NSAutoreleasePool * pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init];
      NSMutableString * hello = [@"Hello World" mutableCopy];
      [hello
        enumerateSubstringsInRange: NSMakeRange(0, [hello length])
        options: NSStringEnumerationByComposedCharacterSequences
        usingBlock:
          ^(NSString * substring,
            NSRange substringRange,
            NSRange enclosingRange,
            BOOL * stop)
            if(substringRange.location)
              [hello insertString: @" " atIndex: substringRange.location];
      NSLog(@"'%@'", hello);
      [pool drain];
      return 0;
    Are there any 3rd-party libraries that can be used with xcode/objc, akin to the C++ STL string class, that provide memory management for strings and a rich set of functions for string manipulation?
    You can always use Objective-C++ and just use STL itself.
    Having Perl 5 available for back-end "engines" would be wonderful!  Has that happened yet?
    You can always use PCRE or a number of more Cocoa-friendly regular expression libraries. Still, none of them approach Perl for ease of use.

  • Slicing and Dicing a RAW cut

    Ok, this is a really basic question, but I dont see it addressed in the Adobe Premiere Classroom in a book
    I used Capture (F5) to get all the RAW footage from the camera into one big file. I have already set clip markers at the beginning of all the takes. What is the best way to slice and dice the RAW footage into all the different takes that I can place in my sequence?
    Sam

    The best way is to load the clip in the Source Monitor, add in and out points of the first segment you want, then drag the image in the source monitor onto the timeline. Repeat.
    You can create items in the Project Panel by dragging from the Source Monitor to the Project panel.
    You will also find links to many
    free tutorials in the PremiereProPedia that will quickly show you how things are done in Premiere Pro.
