Slideshow export eats hard drive!!!

I am working on my Macbook and I have about 15gb of free hard drive space. As I export my 8 minute slide show to a movie, Iphoto consumes tons of hard drive space, eating up the entire free space and causing the computer to crash. How can a slide show export consume such a massive amount of space? Is there some way to prevent this? Is there some setting that's wrong? I find it hard to believe that this could be normal behavior.

Bit of an update on this. The export used up about 10gb. The resulting file is only about 200mb. After the export, I quit Iphoto and the space on the drive returned! Hurray for that. What I did previously was not quit Iphoto and then open Imovie to import the slideshow. Doing that ate the rest of the memory and caused the crash.
Clearly there is something about exporting a slideshow which results in extraordinary hard drive space being eaten temporarily. I didn't notice this happening before.
Grand Perspective looks daunting. Not sure if it will help me, because I know what's happening, I just don't know why or how to stop it.

  • Error when exporting to hard-drive

Lightroom 4 was working fine before I tried to export to Flickr.  The export was NOT successful, and after that, I encountered an error when exporting to hard drive.  Although this error appears, the export to hard drive is always successuful.  It is annoying to continuously receive this error message.  Any help will be much appreciated.  Thanks

That is the small trouble with screenshots: as unambiguous and helpful as they are they are hard to search for their content.
But it looks identical to several other posts here (http://forums.adobe.com/message/4341436#4341436, http://forums.adobe.com/message/4318154#4318154, http://forums.adobe.com/message/4285253#4285253, http://forums.adobe.com/message/4261252#4261252, http://forums.adobe.com/message/4177871#4177871):
In your export manager select "Do nothing" i.o. leaving it blank. down at the bottom where it asks for what to do in Post Processing After Export.
This should have the message go away.
For the sake of searchability I spell out the error message, so that others could find this being answered:
    Unable to Export:

  • Bridge cs6 export - only hard drive option is present. I want ftp and social network module

I want to export my images right from the bridge. Uploading them to different social sites and ftps is a bit of a hassle and it is easy to forget something in the process. It would be so much better if I could just drag files to desired locations/presets.
I've seen something like that in the blogs (but with lower version of CS) where people have facebook and other options. But I can see only hard drive module.
Is it possible? If so - why don't I have this option? What can I do?

If you don’t see the four modules, click the flyout menu and choose “Manage Modules.”
Make sure all four are checked. If you don’t see the four listed, click the little gear, and from ITS flyout menu, choose “Check for Updates.” When you’re through, click the small “Done” button at the bottom to return to the Export Panel main window.
You can start using the export modules directly, but every time you use them you’ll have to go through a long export process. Use presets to streamline this operation, by saving all the work for re-use. You can create multiple presets; for example, you might have several presets for Facebook depending on whether you want to send the images to your wall, or a specific album. We’ll step through the Facebook setup first.
In the Export Panel, highlight “Facebook” and click on the “+” icon at the bottom to Add a new Preset.
The “Add Preset” dialog appears, and the first thing you will need to do is authenticate with Facebook. Note that you will need to authenticate every time you create a new preset, even with the same service, but you won’t need to authenticate when you actually export your images. Click on “Sign In.”
Two things happen: Your browser will be launched, and you’ll see the authentication page from Facebook. You’ll need to enter your credentials, and you can check “Keep me logged in to Adobe Bridge Export Panel.”
    Etc. etc.
You can follow the rest of the instructions here:

  • Lightroom 3 won't export to hard drives

Lightroom 3 stopped being able to export images to any hard drive.  Only Desktop and C:\Users\ are offered as export options.  I can import from any hard drive but can not export to any of them.  Installed version 3.4 RC but problem still exists.  Windows 7 32 bit system.

Click on the small triangle to the right of "Desktop". A drop-down menu will appear. Select "Specific Folder". You should then be able to navigate to wherever you want your exported photos to be.

PS: When you choose "Specific Folder" a new button called "Choose" will appear just below the triangle. Use it to navigate.

  • Unable to export to hard drive

    Hi,
Having real problems with Aperture. Firstly, it crashes on me at least 4 or 5 times when I am using it. Secondly, having finally having editted my photos, I now find that I can't export them! My masters are on an external hard drive and I want to export the editted jpgs back to the hard drive. I am trying to export 97 photos but all that happens is that aperture says it is exporting for hours and then I am told I have run out of start up disk space. I have 477Gb free on the macbook and 743gb on my external hard drive. Any ideas what the problem could be?
    Thanks

Dealing firstly with the crashes I would do the usual, repair disk permissions and repair the aperture database. Hoping this takes care of the crashes.
Moving on to the export side of things, what format are you exporting them in? tiff, Jpeg, etc. etc.?
Have you altered any of the export settings to do a ridiculous amount of dpi on the preset?
I have all my aperture databases on an external drive and then export the images to my desktop and then move them to where I need to. I have never actually tried exporting them to the same disk as to where the images are stored, however I could not see that being an issue.

  • 17" Macbook pro appears to be eating hard drives...

I've got a 17" macbook pro. I'm running Boot Camp and windows XP on it...
A few months after getting it, my computer started having weird intermittent issues... the hard drive seemed to run alot, it would crash, and just other weird stuff. I reformatted the hard drive (both MAC and XP partitions) and reinstalled. This worked fine... for a while.
About 3 months later, same issue. Started getting flaky. Then it developed a "reboot" issue... namely when it would boot, it would crash in the middle of the boot, reboot itself, and work fine. (There was a BSOD but it never stayed up long enough for me to be able to read it) I went to the store and the guy there told me most likely I had a bad hard drive... could either try reinstalling, but since I had done that, probably should swap the drive.
I replaced the drive, installed the OSs and things ran fine. Again, about 3 months later things started getting flaky. The first thing I noticed was again, the hard drive would run alot. Then things would get slow on bootup. Finally, this past weekend it just got to the point the system was DOA... when I boot it the "System" process is taking so much time that nothing else runs in any timely fashion.
I don't go to alot of "questionable" sites, and have tried numerous anti-spyware, virus, etc packages (norton, spybot, spyware doctor, etc...)... (both preventatively and also for diagnostics). Nothing every suspicious. I've also swapped RAM.
The only thing I can really think of, is it might be an overheating issue... its not uncommon at times for me to leave my laptop on for a few days at a time running some jobs. Granted, the hard drive is tucked away up front, so probably not the hottest place on the computer.
    Any thoughts?
    -=Jeff

What brand hard drive do you have ? I have heard of one model of Seagate drives giving problems. If a seagate was replaced with a Seagate, that might be it.
How full is your hard drive--how much free space do you have? You should aim to keep 15%-20% free.
Do you use Disk Utility to verify and repair both permissions and the disk on a regular basis? Especially before and after downloading software?
I assume you're just using your anti spyware stuff on the Windows side--it's not necessary for OS X, and it can cause problems from what I hear although I have no first hand experience with it.
There is a utility called S.M.A.R.T. Utility that will give you a little more information on your hard drive than just "verified".
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32454
See if this gives you any insight.
As to running your MBP for several days, I don't think that would be a problem as long as it is on a hard surface so it won't overheat. If you think your Mac may be running too hot, then run the Apple Hardware Test to be sure the thermal sensors and fans are running properly.
Please post back if nothing helps.
    Good luck!

  • 300 N200 eats Hard Drives?

    Hi,
After about 12 months of use my laptop started to act flaky with more frequent than expected crashes during routine use. After a few more months the HDD died, and I had to replace it. Now 9 months later I can't get it to boot up, and suspecting a corrupt windows installation, I tried putting the HDD in an external USB enclosure, and connecting it to another XP machine. When I try to open the drive is says "The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable."
While I could accept that one HDD could fail, it seems unlikely that a second would also fail. Has anyone heard reports of these laptops damaging hard drives?
    Thanks/Paul

I have encountered no such reports.  I've been using laptops extensively since 1986.  In my opinion all laptop hard drives are DISPOSABLE.   An essential part of backing up data on a laptop is to have another hard drive compatible with the laptop to enable the user to easily back up his data and if necessary, replace his own laptop's hard drive at a moment's notice.

  • Scanning with Image Capture eating hard drive space

This has been a reoccuring problem for me. If I scan around 30mb of images to an external drive, my hard disk ends up with a full message. I end up having to use a cashe cleaner to free the space up again. I've figured out that with the 8 GB of  free space on my internal disk, if I scan around 7-8 images (around 15mb) it says I have filled the disk.
I'd appreciate any help I can get on this. It's a pain in the butt to have to keep clearing space only to have it filled again one image later.

my guess is that you need at least 3 times as much free space on your internal drive as you have now. OS X needs temporary space on that drive for every file move copy, scan, etc it does. you'll find recommendations of 10-20 percent of drive total space here.

    Hi everybody,
For analysis and presentation purpose, I need to export periodically and automatically the full XML data stored in the SLD and apply an XSLT to it.
I need to know how can I proceed...If there is an API to connect and send HTTP or Rfc request to the SLD in order to export the CIM-XML files locally.
    Thanks for help.

  • 8.1 install eating hard drive space

I just completed a Boot Camp install of Windows 8.1 on a 45gb partition.  I figured this would give me a little extra room to play with.  Immediately after the install I had about 16gb free which was less than I was expecting.  Now, roughly an hour later, it's showing 20mb free.  I haven't installed anything, the space just disappeared.  Any ideas about what's going on?
    Thanks

What's this 20 GB all about?
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/system-requirements
    System requirements
    Windows 8.1
If you want to run Windows 8.1 on your PC, here's what it takes:
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2 (more info)
    RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
    It's wildly inaccurate.
If you wish to check for yourself install 8.1 in a 20GB partition install it with 1 or 2GB of Ram and see how it runs. Then you will 'know', as opposed to 'have read'

  • Anyone know why LR would change all my export presets to hard drive?

I am trying to create some export presets, but LR wont allow me to create any that export to Hard Drive. They all change when I hit "Add" to Email. I go and try to update with current settings, but they all keep reverting to Email and not Hard Drive.
    Lightroom 4.4, btw.

Email seems to be the "go to" export service when there are problems with the current export service. It happens to me all the time when export plugins are fouled up. I wouldn't expect it to happen with hard drive export service however, unless hard drive export service is fouled up in Lightroom. Be sure to try it without any export filters (post-process actions) inserted, since problems with those could be a factor.
If you have the problem without "export filters" inserted, then you may have to re-install Lightroom or something - something not right..

  • Lost hard drive space to "other"?

I see someone else had a similar question, and I've tried to follow some of the steps that person took, but to no avail! Briefly, something is eating hard drive space on my work macbook, and I can't figure out what, nor how to get the space back. I edit film of our library program and also sound files for our local history collection, so I do use quite a bit of space. About once a week, I do a time machine backup, and also move finished projects to the external drive. This has always given me enough room to work - until now. I had more than 30 gigs left on my drive before importing the latest 45 minute movie. Now I have less than 8. I'm not sure I've enough room left even to burn it to DVD before offloading the raw footage. Things I noticed:
1.)I don't know if this is a Mavericks thing, but, when I was deleting files from the macbook hard drive, they didn't seem to be in the trash. The command to empty the trash was greyed out.
2.)I looked at the previous thread (the poster who had 300 gigs missing). Like him, I have mystery files in storage - namely, 49 gigs in "other". My life would be a lot simpler if I could get that space back!
What I've done so far: Run OmniDiskSweeper and thrown out some older movies and music that should now be on the external drive.
Opened the Disk utility and repaired permissions and checked the drive. All okay.
Tried to run the daily, weekly, and monthly scripts in Terminal.
As per the previous thread, tried turning off Time Machine, turning it on again, backing up again, and turning it off.
All this did nothing for me. I am still missing close to 50 gigs of space - space I could really use.
OmniDiskSweeper tells me that I have used 73.4 G out of 120. "Get Info" tells me that I've used closer to 113 out of 120. "About This Mac" tells me that I have 49 G in "Other", whatever and wherever that is. How can I get rid of these "other" files and happily edit my films? And  how can I keep this from happening again?
    Thanks very much in advance!
    Mary

  • Exporting iphoto album to external hard drive.

    Hello,
I'm trying to export an iphoto album to an external hard drive that shows up on the left side (side bar) of finder. If I copy and paste the album, the pictures are rearranged.
Is there a way to drag and drop the album directly into the external hard drive?
Side question: Is there a way to add iphoto or imovie to the side bar of Finder under 'places'?
If there is, it seems this would be an easy way to access a specific album in iphoto and directly drag and drop it from a listing in Finder to the external hard drive listed in Finder's side bar 'devices' category.
    Thanks

    PWpw:
First, you don't need to go into the iPhoto Library package to get access to your photos for use outside of iPhoto. Read Terence Devlin's treatise on file access. It has all you need to know.
The pictures, when exported to the external HD, are viewed using the Finder and can only be viewed by title or date. If you want your photos to be in a particular order, you will need to rename them in iPhoto using the Photos->Batch Rename-Title to Text with the sequential numbering box selected. Then export them to the EHD using the File->Export->File Export menu option with the option to use the title as the new file name. You photos will then be in the order you want when viewed alphanumerically in the Finder.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Exporting Images to a folder on the hard drive

I used to be able to export images to a selected folder on my hard-drive without having to identify the folder for every image.
Now when I export I need to select the folder on my hard-drive for each image even thought I'm going to process 50+ images for that folder.
What is wrong & how can i fix it?
    Can anyone help?
    I'm using Lightroom 5.

    Thanks for the quick reply.
I just tried it again and it seems to be working....
If it happens again, will use export with previous.
I was exporting the normal way through the library but my sub-folder was on my hard-drive.
