Slim freezes after entering login information

I have a strange problem with Slim. I've used it for a while and everything has always worked fine (indeed, a different computer with similar setup is still fine), but two weeks ago I couldn't log in. The problem did not develop after an update of slim. I haven't found any similar symptoms described in the forums or wiki.
I start slim through the inittab method, and I usually boot into awesome, but sometimes into openbox, so I followed the instructions for setting up slim for multiple environments. Booting into either worked fine previously.
Now when booting, I can get to slim fine. If I immediately enter my user info and then hit "enter" to start the default WM (which is awesome), then slim just freezes. The user and password box disappear, but the background remains, and nothing else happens. I need to use ctl-alt-F1 to login again from tty and reboot. The strange thing is that if after booting, I enter my user info into slim and then hit "F1" then I can select awesome and boot normally. But just hitting enter after user and password (which should boot the default WM, which is awesome) without selecting awesome from F1 causes the freeze. Also, if I use F1 to select openbox, I get the same freeze.
I have tried modifying my .xinitrc just to open awesome rather than using the multiple-environment setup (see below), and with this .xinitrc, I still got the freezing problem, but obviously couldn't get around it by using F1.
Finally, if I get into awesome using the F1 method and then logout of awesome to go back to slim, then logging in to either awesome without hitting F1 or even logging in to openbox work fine. Very strange.
My slim.log has absolutely nothing useful in it. Here are the last lines from the last 7 boots (the ones where it says "Slim: unexpected signal 15" are the ones where I had to use tty to reboot, the others are where I've booted successfully).
slim: waiting for X server to begin accepting connections.

Here's my .xinitrc. When testing whether the multiple-environment setup was the problem, I commented everything except the last line (which I uncommented) and still had the same problem.

Here's my slim.conf. Everything should be the default settings except for the login command (where I added "dbus-launch") and the sessions line where I specify options for awesome and openbox.

Anyway, I can get around this by using F1, but it is somewhat of a pain as sometimes I forget. Any ideas?

I'm having a very similar problem.   My post is in the newbie corner forum.  So far, I have not found a solution.

I solved my problem - slim was not the last daemon I started in rc.conf.  By moving it to the end, I get password auto-focus and everything works.
Now my rc.conf looks like
# DAEMONS
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng dbus acpid @network @wicd @openntpd @cupsd @crond slim)
I found this recommendation in the Display Manager wiki page while researching the problem:
Ensure you start the display manager last in the DAEMONS array, otherwise X will later allocate a tty device which was previously claimed by Getty (see /etc/inittab). Not placing the display manager at the end can cause X crashes, and is therefore unsupported.
I'd just been lucky before that there wasn't a conflict.
There is a "flicker" during login where I'm shown the XFCE splash, then the SLIM splash again, then the XFCE desktop.  Not sure what's going on there, but it's no big deal.
Cheers,
Rob

You have SCADS of extensions and the things running. McAfee, Intego, Orbicule, CleanMyMac, and others I've not ever even heard of. My first recommendation would be to remove all of these and see if things improve.

I have to enter login information and "secret phrase" for Sync every time Firefox starts up. Sync tells me I am using a new computer, which isn't the case. This is the same computer I set up Sync with.
What am I/is Sync doing wrong?

    There could be several things.

Check the history settings. Is it set to remove cookies?
Type '''about:preferences#privacy''' <Enter> in the address bar.
The button next to '''History,''' select '''Use Custom Settings'''.

  • Unable to enter login information to a password protected ebook on my Nook HD+ using adobe reader.

Unable to enter login information to a password protected ebook on my Nook HD+ using adobe reader.  Would anyone be able to assist me as I am unable to get any help elsewhere and I need to be able to access this ebook for school.
    Thanks

Yes, I have contacted my school and they stated they do not support Nook.  I called Nook and they said I would have to deregister, etc. as they are unable to determine what is wrong.  I tried to pull the document on my phone now and have not been able to do so.  I read the "Getting Started" and it states I should be able to fill out the form, which would be to provide my login information, but am not able to do so.  Maybe this has to do with the android part.  Thank you for providing that information as I did not even think about trying my phone too.  So as this did not work on there, my last conclusion is that it would now be the Adobe issue.  Hopefully this can be fixed as I need to read my document for school and would hate to have to sit behind my computer and not able to take my Nook or phone to read elsewhere.

  • Tiger freezes after entering password

Help! Just installed Tiger and thought all went fine, but after I enter my administrator password the "working icon" just spins away and the computer won't respond to any keys. How do I get past the password screen and fix this problem? Thanks in advance!

    Hello @Ty-kie,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience!
I have read your post on how your notebook freezes up after accepting the password to your computer, and I would be happy to assist you in this matter!
If you are able to successfully log into Windows 8 once again, please boot the PC to Windows 8 Safe Mode and uninstall the following updates:
         a. KB2982791
         b. KB2970228
         c. KB2975719
         d. KB2975331
In addition, I recommend following this document on Computer Locks Up or Freezes (Windows 8). This should help prevent your system from crashing in the future.
Please re-post with the results of your troubleshooting, and I look forward to your reply!

  • Freeze after admin login

    Hi everyone,
I have a MacBook Pro, running OS 10.4.11 and two accounts: an admin account in my name and a Guest account with no password.
About a month ago, Safari started unexpectedly quitting whenever I tried to load a page. I sent a crash report but thought nothing of it and just used Firefox until yesterday, when the same thing started happening to more apps like Skype and iChatAV. I had the latest versions of all of these apps.
When I restarted I came across a bigger problem. Now when I try to login to my admin account, the computer will freeze on login. The login window will say "Logging in..." then disappear to the default background, and then the computer will freeze. It always does this, before any menus or my personal desktop appear. The mouse is still movable. Sometimes, after a few minutes, the login screen reappears, as if I never logged in. Then I try again and it still freezes.
But here's the kicker. I can still login fine to the Guest account with no freezing or application problems. I tried a bunch of restart/shutdown combos but to no avail.
I then tried safe boot and no-start-up-items boot. I also booted from the install disk and ran disk utility. I verified, repaired permissions and repaired the disk. Nothing changed - same problem. I looked through a bunch of material on the support site but could not find anything particularly applicable. I cannot identify the problem. I'm resigning myself to the fact that I'll probably have to reinstall the system software, but I'm hoping by posting here that people may have a better solution.
I also recently installed the last security update (unsure which one), if that helps. I found a bunch of useful things to try here: (http://forums.osxfaq.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=7269) but much of this I cannot do without admin permissions. Also, I'm afraid to do anything drastic or unnecessary until I know more about the problem itself.
So can anyone help? Your help would be GREATLY appreciated and could save me from quite a deal of effort.

So, honestly, is there no redemption for that original account?
There most certainly is, but the hard part is figuring out which of the tens of thousands of files are the munged ones.
I was thinking of running DiskWarrior but I can't seem to mount my external drive (separate problem?) to make a backup, and I'm nervous to run DW without a backup.
Nothing like a Backup, but I'd be the least nervous about running DiskWarrior than anything else!
It seems like I might as well just take what I need from my old account manually and then trash it and start afresh. What are the problems with this mentality?
Let's wait on that, unless you're critically short on HDD free space.
What are the problems with this mentality? If I do, how to do I make the full transformation (permissions and everything) of designing my new admin account the "default" admin account?
Let's see if where we have problems first.

When I try to purchase music, i keep getting this error and it will not finish the purchase.  Anyone have a fix?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Select "/var/log/install.log" from the file list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, start over and note the time. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

  • When I try to log in to an online auction website, Firefox simply keeps reloading the "enter login information" page. I can log in just fine on IE.

I buy and sell sport clay sport shooting accessories on "GunBroker-dot-com". To get in, you have to enter a user name and a password. This worked fine on IE, and used to work on Firefox, but about four days ago, when I would try to log in to the site on Firefox, it would simply reload the page asking me for my user name and password. I tried using the pre-stored information, and I tried entering it directly; neither worked, it just keeps reloading the sign-in page. I continue to be able to access the site without problems on IE.

Try a different browser. Try OpenDNS servers.

Spreadsheet imported from excel. Formula to add columns gives a syntax error as soon as the colon key is pressed and system freezes. However, highlighting the columns works and shows the formula as expected. The system works properly on new sheets!

    Ron,
In cases of bad behavior such as this, it sometimes helps to close and quit everything and restart the computer. Try that and let us know if the problem persists after the restart.

  • [SOLVED] GNOME login screen freezes after 3 seconds

    Hello,
today I installed Arch-Linux the first time. I had some issues during the installation (following https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Anleitu … Einsteiger (its the german version, seems to differ a little from the english version)), but everything went good until I installed GNOME. Now the login screen freezes everytime after quite exactly 3 seconds, unless I press [strg]+[alt]+[f2] fast enough to switch in tty2. Then the screen will only freeze when I switch back to tty1. Once the screen is frozen, I can't switch to tty2 anymore.
I think the problem has something to do with my nvidia hybrid graphic system. During the installation I installed the packages bumblebee, bbswitch and primus, but uninstalled them because I thought they could be the problem. But although I uninstalled the packages, the "Stamina-Mode" status led is turned on after the system has started and the "Speed-Mode" status led not. I think that's a little bit strange, because I can't imagine which process is controlling these leds.
    So I ran just
    pacman -S xorg-drivers
and I had to create the xinitrc-file (because I could not find this file in /etc/skel). Now the default GUI appeared after I ran
    startx
(I saw some windows and a clock). After that I installed gnome, changed the xinitrc-file in my userhome and got the freeze after a reboot.
I don't know if it has anything to do with my problem, but I get the following error-messages everytime I boot:
[drm:ibx_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* too many full retries, give up
[drm:ilk_display_irq_handler] *ERROR* Pipe A FIFO underrun
interl ips 0000:00:1f.6: thermal reporting for required devices not enabled, aborting

P.S.: Because I'm a total beginner at linux I probably missed the most important informations, but I can give you more if you tell me how

Ok, I could solve the problem myself by installing the latest nvidia driver. Now I guess the intel grahic card is not used anymore, but I don't really know...
