Slow Copy Speeds?

I am trying to copy an Aperture library from an external drive to my desktop and it says it is going to take 46 hours!!!! I am using Firewire 800 and the the file is 198 GB. Is this normal?

That is probably a very bad estimate. Initial time estimates can be quite far off and, allowed to continue, the estimate will correct fairly soon. Give it time... it won't take that long, unless there's something wrong with one of the drives.

  • Very slow copy speeds from my USB thumb drive.  Why?

I have an 8GB USB thumb drive. When I copy files to/from it to my Mac Pro (Early 2008 2.8Ghz), the transfer speeds are very slow. But when I use it with my 2009 Macbook, the speeds are fast. Why would it work faster with a low end Macbook than with a Mac Pro? I'm using one of the USB ports on the front of the Mac Pro.

    Anyone have an idea?

  • Slow copy speed using file manager(s)

    Hi everyone!
    I have a strange problem:
When I copy files over the network (smb) using a file manager I just get ~100 MBit speed.
The same copy opreation via command line runs on full Gigabit speed.
Doing more than 1 copy (or move) via file manager results in 100 MBit for each operation (up to 3/4, then they are getting slower).
The very strange thing is: I get the same behavior using Thunar / XFCE on my current Arch setup as well as on previous Ubuntu based setups (Xubuntu and Kubuntu).
Installing an Intel Server NIC also doesn't change this behavior.
The other hardware also should be no issue. Copy target is a QNAP TS-459 Pro II. The PCs are quite new 8-Core AMD and Intel Core i7.
Copying files in Windows (7 pro) also gives me full Gigabit speed ~110 MB/s.
As searching for this topic turned out more or less impossible I hope someone here can help me.
    Thank for any hint!
    Burns

Same here. I also am posted on the crashing thread since the 3.3 update.
I noticed the speed thing too, just kind of ignored it for the moment. If I copy to 2 or 3 Macs it works, still slower than it should be. If I try to copy to 10 or more Macs, it is very slow or just fails to work. Did not have this issue with 3.2.
Clients and admin Macs running OS 10.5.8.

  • Poor drive copy speed on 27" IMac??

I am a long time Mac user. My first was a 128. So I am not inexperienced with Macs. Rather than carry a computer back and forth to work, I have a computer at both at work and at home and carry my working files on an Aegis Apricorn mini Firewire 400 drive. I keep a backup of this drive at both locations. Recently I started using a 27" IMac at work. I have to use an adapter with the drive due to Apple switching to FW800. On older Macs with FW400 ports, I could backup 35 Gigs in about 25 minutes. Now this same backup takes 15 hours!
I have tried everything. I bought an Apricorn USB mini drive and tried using that. The backup requires 9 hours! The USB requires a similar amount of time on my older 24" IMac at home. From past experience, I would expect USB to be slower. My concern here is that I am guessing the fact that there is no longer a true FW400 port is the root of my problem. I suspected it could be the adpater. So I bought a different brand. Same result.
I spent an hour and a half on the phone with Apple the other day. No help. They pushed me up to an engineer. We went through everything and he agreed that the copy times were ridiculous. He took my email address and said he wanted to check this out further and would send me an email with a phone number to reach him. He never sent the email. I am getting VERY frustrated. We bought four 27" IMacs and all are having issues with slow internet speeds (one third the speed of Windows computers)and slow copy speeds to external drives. All are running 10.6.3.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Better yet... Is there a solution? We intended to expand the use of Macs in our office. Now unless we fix these problems... Nobody will want them.

Resolved this one myself with the help of a previous post. These Apricorn drives are formatted as FAT32. As soon as I formatted it to Mac OS Extended, everything was fine.

  • Copying speed of files has slowed down significantly

copying speed of files has slowed down significantly
and if initiate two different copy processes then it slows so much that 1 GB data takes time like it was 15GB

Again, it depends on file types. Sometimes Apple files are not single files but packages of many smaller files, for example the iPhoto Library. Right-click in Finder, if there's "Show Package Contents", then it is technically not a single file.
For simple file transfer from one machine to another per USB drive, it can save some time to zip the data before and after transfer to and from the USB drive.

  • Very slow copy and rm speeds

I've seen other postings about slow copy processes upon upgrading to Snow Leopard. However, none of the replies seem to address the situations I am experiencing. First, copy times between my MacBook Pro (2 Ghz, 2GB, 100GBHD, 15" - the first MBP introduced), and external USB2 Lacie HD have become very slow (1 hour for 4-6 files totalling ~4GB). Curiously, sometimes the same size transfer occurs in 3-4 minutes.  I recently upgraded to SL from Tiger, and the Tiger times were in the 3-4 minute envelop. The external HD is a 1TB Poulton Lacie, with over half the disc free.  My MBP HD has about 20GB free, and only the Finder, mail, occaisionally xcode, and occaisionally a browser, (either Safari or Firefox) are running during the transfer.  The same sometimes occurs with only the Finder and the activity monitor running. The USB is connected directly to the MBP. So, in summary, the ext HD is directly connected, half empty, there is room on the internal HD, and the memory is not particularly burdened with other processes.  The activity monitor slows less than half the CPU capability being used.
Secondly,  another problem occurs using the unix secure erase, rm -Pr.  It is very slow since upgrading to SL from Tiger. The finder's secure erase is too slow to use.
Any thoughts about why on either?  Right now, I'm wishing that I stayed with Tiger.  Thanks.

I suggest looking at your logs in Console.app to see if anything unusual is happening during the long file copies.
The SMART status isn't that useful. If it says the drive is dead, the drive it dead. If it says the drive is "verified", the drive could still be dead. A good indicator of this is if file copies take an hour instead of 3 minutes.
Is this the original hard drive in that machine? If so, I'm surprised it has made it this long. Notebook hard drives typically start failing at three years of age. You might not notice it until you do a major reoriganization of your files' organization on the disk - such as installing a new operating system.
I compared Finder's secure erase with rm and they seem more or less equivalent.
I think your internal hard drive is just failing. That's all.

  • Very Slow Copy Operation on HP Pavilion 15 p001tx

Hi everyone. I recently bought the HP Pavilion 15 p001tx. Here are the Specifications if you need them
    Intel Core i5 4210U 1.7Ghz ,Turbo Boost to 2.4GHz
    4 GB DDR3 RAM
    1 TB HDD
    Nvidia Geforce 830M 2GB DDR3
My problem is with extremely slow copying/moving operation on USB drives. I mean I could get only 5-15 Mbps while copying/moving.
I am aware that I am using a USB 3.0 Flash Drive connected to the USB 3.0 slot but a constant 5-15 Mbps is ridiculus. I have a friend who has the same model and he could get 35-40Mbps of transfer speed.
I ran the HP utility and installed the latest device drivers for Windows 8.1. I have not run into problems while copying / moving files within the harddrive as it runs at a decent 45 Mbps , in fact here is the CrystalDisk Mark benchmark of my HDD:
    * MB/s = 1,000,000 byte/s [SATA/300 = 300,000,000 byte/s]
    Sequential Read : 92.794 MB/s
    Sequential Write : 89.059 MB/s

  • Slow Network Speed with MacPro

I just received 4 MacPro's with the dual quad processors. I have configured 3 for our workplace and have moved them into production. We are experiencing very slow network speeds, a test file on our server of 100mb takes 2 minutes 20 seconds to copy to the desktop. I have manually set the ethernet port to 100baseT with full duplo. The old machine is running the same OS 10.4.10, and only takes 12 seconds to copy the file. I should mention that we use DAVE to connect to our servers, both machines are running the same version of DAVE, and using a third machine I connected to both drops and the file copied in 12 sec, showing that the network is physically OK. The only difference between the two machines is that one is the intel version? Can anyone offer any thing to try?
    Thanks

I am 99% sure someone else had 'slow transfer' in another thread.
Sometimes a router needs firmware update to be compatible, or upgrade the cables to cat6e, or look for a new router or switch which helped my own setup. Just look for one that says that it is "Vista compatible" actually.

  • Cisco IPS make slow copy between linux server

we have 3 subnet A, B, C . Each subnet have some linux servers. Subnet C is protected by cisco IPS 4270.
1)If we config IPS to bypass traffice, copy speed between servers around 10MB/s -> 25MB/s.
    2) IF  IPS protect subnetC.
When we copy file from a serrver of SubnetC to subnet A or B, copy speed increase from min to around 20MB/s.
And when we copy file from a serrver of SubnetA or B to subnet C, copy speed very slow around 700kB/s-> 2MB/s
The server used command "scp .... "
So we think there are signatures we should tuning. we have CSM but we havent seen any relate events about this problem.
    Help me check this problem!

    Hello,
You can do what Jon mentioned, you might see a signature being triggered when Host C takes place but if by any chance you do not then create captures for both traffic flows (With C and Without C).
    Afterwards compare
You might find some weird in that TCP session that involes C (packet loss, then retransmissions, ooo packets, etc).
Make sure you correlate all of the information

  • Very Slow Copying Files

I have My External Hard Drive connected to my air port extreme base station. I have the latest firmware update. While copying files or using time machine to back up my computer, the speed is extremely slow max speed is 2.2 mpbs but bounces from 200kbps to 2.2 mbps constantly. I am with in 5 feet of the base station everything else works fine including internet speed.

i have the same problem over here. Been looking around the internet, tried different configurations, nothing helps. 3min for 15M.
just wondering: is it possible my file is transmited over the internet and back, instead of directly over the local network to my Airport disk or other computer?
Not sure if it has anything to do with it but when I look at my filesharing config, it says: Other users can access shared folders on this computer, and administrators all volumes, at afp://xx-xx-xxx-xxx.access.telenet.be/ or "yyy". where x is my IP and yyy is my bonjour-name.
why is my provider in that afp-path?
    anyone any idee?

  • G4 Xserve new drive copy speed

We have an older Xserve with 2 150 gig drives in it. Just got a new 250 gig added it to the third bay and notice the copy speeds from the old drives to the new drive is painfully slow. Is there a diff between the bays and how they are controlled?
    Many---XServe-G4s-G5s-Flat iMacs-Windowz   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

No the 150s are not raided. Just stand alone drives. They are both IBM-IC35L060AVVA07-0. We bought them with the server. The new drive is a Hitachi HDS722525VLAT80. We have zeroed the drive and reformatted. Copying from the 150 to 150 is super fast. Copying from either 150 to the 250 is crazy slow.

  • Time Capsule as router slows download speeds

    Hello,
Over the past couple of months I have been having intermittent internet connection issues where my download speeds slow down from 50mbps+ (Comcast) to under 1mbps, per speedtest.net
I assumed it was a Comcast issue and contacted their support several times. They sent a technician over who had the line reset and that seemed to fix the problems, but a couple of days later it was back. Contacting support again, they had me test the speeds connected directly to the modem (Motorola Surfboard SB6141 DOCSIS 3.0). Connected directly to the modem via Ethernet, I reliably get 50mbps+ download speeds, but using my 4th Gen Time Capsule as a wifi router slows the speeds down to under 1mbps.
After doing research on these and other forums and finding people with a similar issue, I ran the gamut of potential solutions: changing DNS servers, changing wifi bands and channels (2.4 and 5ghz, all chanels tested), changing Time Capsule firmware versions (7.6.3, 7.6.1, and 7.6 are the only versions available for my 4th Gen TC).
I eventually tested with an ethernet cable plugged into the Time Capsule and have the same frustrating issue when directly connected to the router, which means the issue is with the Time Capsule functioning as a router but isn't WiFi specific.
Upload speeds are a consistent 10mbps+ wether I'm connected directly to the modem or using the Time Capsule as a router, even when download speeds are slowed to a crawl.
I purchased my Time Capsule 1 year and 2 months ago, so I no longer have AppleCare for this purchase. I am out of troubleshooting ideas and am on the cusp of purchasing a second wifi router if I can't find a way to resolve my issue.
    Thanks for your help!

I can make a couple of suggestions..
You will need to install 5.6 utility on at least one computer.. if you don't have it available already.
    1. Replace the ethernet patch cable from the modem to the TC.
    2. What I want you to do is lock the speed of the TC WAN port to 100mbit full duplex.
This is only on the v5 utility.
Another method of doing the same thing is putting a small switch between the TC and the modem. Fast ethernet type would be best.. that will force the connection down to 100mbit.
You can also test with half duplex but that would indicate a major problem if it worked.
    3. Make sure ipv6 is local link only.. there is no way to turn it off.
Having done those things.. I do note the TC lacks diagnostic and control tools in the firmware, to understand the issue. If those steps do not fix it is likely nothing will.
There is something fundamentally wrong in how the TC is handling routing.. maybe IPv6 getting in the way .. ?? Unfortunately there is simply not enough controls.
The fact that ethernet is affected in this way (though I would do the test with wireless off.. and ipv6 off in the computer as well).. there is little other choice but to get another router.
The TC can be relegated to bridged on the new router.. and still function fine for backup and wireless network for your local network.
If you have applecare on a computer it will still cover the TC.. but I think you may have issues proving the problem.. ie if you take it to apple it will work perfectly.. If you read this forum as I have done.. the SB61xx series modems seem to be a common factor. There is nothing wrong if you test to the modem from the computer but the SB Motorola modem and the TC are incompatible in some way.
I would like you to report the difference in gateway..
When you plug a computer directly to the modem..
Can you please do a copy and paste from Network preferences of the ip and gateway values.
    ie this stuff.
Then I want you to get the same stuff out of the TC when it connects.
So we can compare the gateway (Router in applespeak) and if they are different.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. it is very simple.. drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. drill down.. applications utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall 6.1 (now 6.2 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. so just ignore the toyland version.. the plastic hammer.. and start using 5.6.. a real tool.

  • Question on Firewire copy speeds (Help?)

My 2011 MacBook Pro 2.2/750/8 only has firewire 800. It seems my copy speeds are rather slow.
    90gb > FW800 = 35 minutes
    90gb > FW800/400 adapter = 1 Hour
Both instances are using a dedicated external HD or drive dock
    Is this somewhat correct?

    Thanks though, for the reply.
I noticed the slower transfer rate on my first backup this past summer, but I thought it was just CCC's or Super Duper's indexing process.
Because of current HD prices, (& Instead of having to purchase another) I was consolidating data, (photos, backups from previous computers, etc.)
I was moving a single zipped/compressed file to arrive at the comparison in transfer speeds. My best guess, possibly a different chipset, or FW slightly "hobbled" because of the Thunderbolt port?
Just wondering if anyone else noticed this issue.

  • WRT310N Playstation 3 Slow Download speed and general lag

Hey guys, I just recently bought the WRT310N and got both of my computers working with it. One is wired directly into the router, while the other is running off wireless. My Playstation 3 is able to connect to the router but I am getting an extremely slow connection speed.
Right now, both PC's get about 6.4-6.5 Mbps download speed while my Playstation is anywhere from 600 Kbs to 1.2 Mbps. I have plugged in my Playstation 3 directly into the modem and got a speed of 3.2 Mbps and was downloaded a demo very fast, but I do not recieve anywhere near those results when using it wireless.
Any advice? I have tried opening the ports, but that only seemed to slow it down. A couple of days ago I opened the ports specific to the game NHL 10 and for two days I was getting such a good speed in the game that it felt like I was playing offline, which was great! Then this morning, it just seemed do a complete 180. Now when I play the game I get an extreme amount of lag, and my other games like CoD4 get random lag spikes. Like, I'll be running and I get a lag spike which seems to happen fairly consistently every minute or so.
Any advice? Should I try opening the ports again or what?

I think you need to adjust the wireless settings of your Router, The wireless settings on your Router must have been setup to its default that's the reason you are receiving low signal strength on your PS3.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...
