Slow i Mac computer OSX10.5.8

Computer hasbeen getting slower and slower for the last week to where the scroll hardly works, donloads take forever or just don'. opening web sites, e-mail etc. slow, slow, etc.  In frstration I turned off my computer and restarted it and now everything seems to work fine.  Also a Comcast guy suggested that I contact apple and find out how to do a "clen up" of my computer which according to him seems to be overdo???  Why did restarting appear to solve my problem and do I need to "clen up"?  If so how?
Fred

It would have been useful to know what Mac you have. If it is a PPC G4 or G5 you cannot upgrade any further. If it is an Intel Mac:
Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
and in the UK:
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
but nobody knows for how long it will be available.
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether further updates are required.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
To use iCloud you have to upgrade at least to Lion, but some functions are only available in Mountain Lion:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4759
You can also purchase the code to use to download Lion (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard), or you can purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store - if you can run that:

Hi Everyone.  I have an old Mac Book with software updated to 10.6.8.  I have saved a ton of emails in my inbox 'On My Mac'.  There are so many it is slowing down my computer.  Where do I find the folder with all the emails so I can cut and paste them to an external hard drive? Pls.help.  Tks.

Depending on which email client software you use
the files should be in 'your home folder' library, esp.
if you use Mail application.... ~/Library/Mail
Since you don't specify what mail application,
that would most be associated with the file.
I notice there are some items to the right of your post
where it says "more like this' so that may be worth a
look to see if similar issues were answered. Also, the
Help viewer in your system is a searchable database.
Seems that google also brings up fair information, too.
Do you have a complete bootable clone of your entire
Mac system on an externally enclosed hard disk drive?
    Good luck & happy computing!

    Hello,
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
Open Network Utility in Applications>Utilities>Info tab, select Airport/Wifi & what is the Link Speed & are there any Errors/Collisions on the right?

  • I have an older mac w/LION 10.7.5 - if I upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8, will it slow down my computer significantly?

I have an older IMAC - purchased in 2007. Works well. I have LION iOS 10.7.5 and want to upgrade to Mountain Lion 10.8. Will it slow down my computer? If so, how much?

Be sure you can upgrade your iMac:
    Upgrading to Yosemite
You can upgrade to Yosemite from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Yosemite can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Yosemite
To upgrade to Yosemite you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Yosemite from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Yosemite is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

  • Computer runs slow when Mac Mail open

Mail works ok, albeit very slow, but the computer runs painfully slow.  Spinning beach ball trying to perform the most mundane tasks, like clicking between pages in Safari.  Once I right click on Mail and close it, the computer runs just fine.

Also, with Activity Monitor open but Mail quit, select CPU down at the bottom, see what the % Idle is. Then open Mail and see what it says.
You should run the Combo Update to 10.5.8. This might help.

@Eric: I'm not ruling it out 100% as a fix for this problem, but Permissions Repair is not the panacea or valuable troubleshooting step you seem to think it is. It may have been more useful in pre-Leopard OSs like Tiger.

  • I just upgraded to Maverick on my2 year old Macbook Pro and it has slowed down the computer terribly.  All I see is that whirling circle every time I do anything.  How do I go back to old OS.  Terrible upgrade -- forces you to buy a new Mac!!!!

I just upgrade to Maverick on my 2 year old MacBook Pro and it has slowed down the computer terribly.  All I see every time I do anything is that crazy circle going round and round.  I don't recommend you upgrading.  How do I get rid of it.  I believe it forces you to buy a new macbook!!!!

It does not. First things first have you tried restarting?
    Try restting PRAM

Try booting up in Safe Mode

  • My Mac book pro has the end of a earphone stuck to it. After this I updated to maverick, and this massively slowed down my computer. Now my laptop is switching on and logging in just fine, but after logging in the screen goes white. What can the reason be?

At first my laptop was fine after the earphone end got stuck in. Soon it started getting slower, and suddenly it stopped switching on. The people in the service station said that it wAs because the hard disk drive was corrupted. I came back home, and immediately it stopped working again. This time they said it was because of water spill. They changed the entire key board and then it started working for a while. Later I updated to maverick and that slowed down my computer. Once, I switched on my laptop, logged in, and then the screen went white. When we took it to the service center they said they will need to replace the hard disk. I am not sure what I should do. Any suggestions?

Liquid damage from water spill is progressive, unfortunately.
    Best.

  • Do you have any ideas why Motion 5 would run slow on a computer? I have an Imac with 8Gigs of ram, and plenty of hard drive space, but it still gives me the beach ball when I add a few lights and effects. I'm at the end of my rope.

You probably don't really need 1080 at 60 for your finished projects but since you're just starting out with Motion, you need to lower your expectations. A long way. 1080 is about 2 million pixels per frame, DV is only about 400,000. That's not just five times as many pixels for the Mac to track; everything in video is exponential.
Explore the training tutorials available by Mark Spencer. You will get an idea of how his super powerful machine reacts with the software.
Adding a light roughly doubles the processing time over flat scenes. Two lights increases processing again. Reflections require processing the lights and then calculating the reflections so add another quarter of the time required for flat scenes. Add camera movement, motion blur, and depth of field and you need exponentially more processing time for every frame. The preload of renders into RAM is one of the cooler features of Motion, as comapred to After Effects, but that takes tons of time, to.
Try working in ye olde DV resolution for a few days. Get to know the software's limitations and what gets imposed by your Macintosh. Step up to 720p/30 and see how things slow down.

  • Installing BootCamp Driver on a non mac computer for debugging purpose

Hello, is it possible to install BootCamp Driver on a non mac computer in order to debug a software that is very slow on a Windows XP/BootCamp with MacBook Pro (I can't use the Mac computer for a long time, then I must test on my computer : a PC, not a Mac) : is it possible ? I tried to install Bootcamp 2.1 on a Windows XP SP2 on a PC, but the software quit after a while without any message.
    Thanks for help, Patrice.

Hi Patrice and welcome to Discussions,
I admit I never in 20+ years tried to do what you try to accomplish but I would assume that a Windows driver would only install if the appropriate hardware device is present.
So, I don't think you can do this.

  • Slow moving Mac after Yosemite

I have a Macbook pro mid 2009.  I loved this computer until I downloaded Yosemite.  Now it is very slow.  It also gets extremely hot to the touch on the bottom of my computer after just a few mins of running it.  I’m close to throwing in the towel and getting a PC.    Please Help!

You're running in the absolute bare minimum ram to run just the OS, anything you try to do on top of that will slow your mac to a crawl. Take a look at OWC for upgrade options http://eshop.macsales.com

  • I want to put music on my iPhone 4, but am not able to because I can not download the version of iTunes required because my mac computer is too old.

Am just having troubles in adding music to my new phone in that when I connect it to my computer it says that the phone requires the new version of iTunes being 10.5, but when I go to download this for my mac computer it says that this version of iTunes requires a different mac, meaning that my computer is too old.  So I am just wondering how I can get music onto my phone?!

You will have to upgrade your operating system version and possibly your whole computer.  We cannot provide more information easily until we know more about your system.
Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then "About This Mac", then "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
Apple does tell you about required equipment for the iPhone -- in 8 point medium gray type on a light gray box.   The Store associates kind of automatically assume everybody is running a new model computer and the one I met when we bought our iPhone had never seen a pre-2008 Mac and was somewhat puzzled why anybody would own such an antique.

  • Hi Guys I have asked to transfere my creative suite from windows to mac, no problem, I got the serial number, but I have a windows installation disc how to I get the mac version on my mac computer?

HI Guys I have recently asked to transfer my Windows creative suite to a Mac computer. I received the serial number but unlike my lightroom install disc, which is win and mac, my Creative Suite disc is windows only, how do I go about installing a Mac version of my creative suite onto the Mac computer?

I am talking about the Ver 3 download link that came with the purchase email.
That link is no longer available. Use "Migration Assistant" to copy your Applications from your old mac to the new Mac, then immediately run software update. Aperture Version 3.2 will not run on your new mac with Mavericks, you will have to Upgrade to version 3.4.5 at least - you can download this update from the Support page: Aperture 3.4.5
Then launch Aperture and enter your registration key and try now too update from version 3.4.5 to 3.5 from the AppStore. The AppStore will change your Aperture registration to an AppStore version, so you will able to reinstall by downloading from the AppSTore in future.
If you want transfer only Aperture and no other applications, do it manually: You will have to copy not only the application but folders from the libraries as well:
    /Applications/Aperture.app
    /Library/Application Support/Aperture/
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/

  • I have changed my apple ID but cannot get my Mac computer to change it on iCloud.  I have signed out but do not know how to sign back in with my new id.

I have successfully changed my apple ID and password, but cannot get my Mac computer to change it on iCloud.  I have accessed system preferences, iCloud and sign out.  But now I do not know how to sign in using my new id and password.  I would like iCloud to work on my Mac so that it will sync to my iPhone and iPad.  I have installed all of the latest software.  How do I change this account on my Mac?

Do you have your Mac backed up?
If not, you should use Time Machine to back up your Mac to an external hard drive just "in case".
But if all you did was change your existing ID, then deleting the Calendar infomation from the Mac when you sign out should not be an issue. Since it is the same Apple ID, it is the same iCloud account (just with a different name), so your Contacts, Calendars, etc. are stored in iCloud. When you sign back in, you will have the option to sync Contacts, Calendars, Notes, etc. with iCloud - it should already be checked. Just sign back in, and your iCloud info will re-download to your Mac.
I just tried this, and all of my stuff showed up when I signed back in. Notes took a couple of seconds to load once I opened them, but they are all there.
Note: If you are signing on with a brand new Apple ID, then nothing will be downloaded because it will be an entirely different iCloud account. But if it is the same Apple/iCloud/iTunes ID with just a new email, then it will all be restored.
    Cheers,
