Thanks all :-)
PS system was upgraded to 12Gb RAM a year ago, and is running 10.6.8
<E-mail Edited by Host>
That's not a Power Mac, it's a Mac Pro; completely different archtecture and Power Mac can't run beyond 10.5.8.
We'll have this moved to the proper forum.

The better your description, the better the chance of a solution. The results of posting etrecheck output on this site without a full description of the problem are very poor.
For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? What other changes did you make, if any, just before it became slow? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup. -
Another slow mac after Mavericks...
Hi, I know I need more memory for sure, but could you please advise whether that will most likely fix my slow mac based on my EtreCheck? My concern is investing in old laptop if that will not solve and I should better off think of a brand new. Thanks in advance for your help. Cheers!

Slow Mac after Mavericks Upgrade
So this has been brought up multiple times in this community, but I wanted to give it a shot with my specific info. I have attached my EtreCheck results for more info about my system. I downloaded Mavericks right when it came out, and I have been struggling with this macbook ever since. Many times it will take between 3-5 minutes to simply open an application like Mail or Safari, and when I restart the computer the problems never seem to subside. I have reset the SMC multiple times. The first reset I did, it seemed to fix the problem, but that only lasted for a few hours. After that, no reset has done anything at all. I'm thinking about upgrading my RAM to 8 GB, but I want to make sure that will actually fix the problem before I shell out the cash for that, and I was told to come here to see if anybody had any ideas. Additionally, when I look at the hard drive storage, it is indicating I have 16 GB of movies, which I know is not the case so I'm not really sure what is going on there, or maybe that is the problem. I have a windows partition that is completely filled, and have also thought about deleting the partiiton if that would alleviate some of the problems. Thanks for reading this and any help you can provide!!

Back up your documents and everything else important to you, not that there is any reason to believe your hard disk may be failing, but the symptoms you describe may presage an impending disk failure, and you should have backups anyway.
Boot OS X Recovery by holding ⌘ and r (two fingers) while you start your Mac. At the Mac OS X Utilities screen, select Disk Utility. Select your startup volume (usually named "Macintosh HD") and click the Repair Disk button. Describe any errors it reports in red. If Disk Utility reports "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK" in green then you can be reasonably (though not completely) assured your hard disk is in good working order.
If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
If you do not have a backup, create one now, verify that it is a viable backup of your essential software and files, then erase your Mac completely, reinstall OS X and your essential software. When you reinstall your essential software, you must do so from their original sources, not from a backup that may have been corrupted.
Using CleanMyMac2 to remove files and components of files it considers "junk" will corrupt a Mac. Nothing less than erasing your Mac and rebuilding it from the ground up will undo the effects of having used it, and its developer's instructions for uninstalling it are not completely effective. I know no other way to recover from having used it other than these recommendations. -
I am having trouble viewing anything that is on wordpress, including the wordpress site. This means I cannot view my own wordpress blog too properly - no images are viewable, only plain text and hyperlinked text. This happened immediately after I upgraded to Mountain Lion. My Mac is mid-2010. Everything else works fine. Thanks.
Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of this exercise is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
*Note: If FileVault is enabled under OS X 10.7 or later, or if a firmware password is set, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test. -
DSL speed slow down after 10.5 upgrade :(
Hello all,
I have a question, and need the Apple cyber-community to help me with this one.
I have A.T.& T.'s DSL service. I have a 2WIRE 1701HG router-DSL modem. I HAD 1.2mg download speed 99% of the time with MacOS 10.4.x. Yes I know that it is not very fast, but I live in the country side and am at the VERY VERY end of the line of service.
After I upgraded to MacOS 10.5.x, my down load speeds have slowed down to around 200 to 850bps. I have checked my hardware, and all seems fine. I called A.T.&.T and they ran a speed check and said I was getting 1.5 speed. Any ideas how to fix the issue?
Thanks,
Apple //GSPS: "Get a Windows Vista computer!!" That was what I got from the tech at A.T.&T. "They don't have this problem....................."

Another slow Mac after installing Mavericks
Hi,
I've been using Mavericks for some time now, but it is painfully slow, particularly when using Adobe software and OpenOffice.
I have read a few tips here but reached my limit on what I can do to solve it. I have uninstalled previous Adobe software, Font Explorer and other bits and pieces, but I am afraid to clean up further lest I delete something important... I have run Etrecheck and fixed a few things, but there are still a few red lines there. I have posted the results below. Any tips will be appreciated!

Mar 23, 2015, 12:30:12 PM /Users/[redacted]/Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/Adobe Photoshop CS5.1_2015-03-23-123012_[redacted].crashI am having problems with slowness, too - ever since installing the latest Yosemite update I downloaded a few days ago. EVERYTHING - Safari, QuickTime, MS Word for Apple, the DVD Player, everything - runs slowly and I get the "rainbow pinwheel of frustration". It's taken me three minutes to type these few sentences. It's really starting to frustrate me. Here is my EtreCheck report:
Problem description:
Since I installed the latest Yosemite update (10.10.2), EVERYTHING runs slowly. I get the rainbow pinwheel whenever I click on anything on Safari, and have trouble typing via Safari; videos stop and start on QuickTime; MS Word for Apple runs slowly - EVERYTHING seems to be slowed down. It took four minutes to get the above sentences typed. Please help me escape the “rainbow pinwheel of failure”!

Sharpness Control Crashes my Mac after Snow Leopard Upgrade - Help!
Hi everyone, I have a strange problem since upgrading to Snow Leopard.
Now, whenever I click on the sharpness control in iPhoto, for any photo, it immediately causes the screen to go haywire and the Mac completely freezes up. The only way I can continue is to hard reset holding the power button.
On restart, the Mac shows no sign of a crash, the crash reporter does not fire up and there is nothing to indicate a crash in the iPhoto log files.
All other iphoto controls seem to work fine. I can scroll through my library, everything there is perfect, tone controls, exposure, they all work just fine. As soon as I even touch sharpness, bingo I get an instant lock up.
Can anyone help as this makes my iphoto basically useless?
Regards
DavidDavid:
A first fix attempt should be to delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder. Relaunch iPhoto, reset your iPhoto preferences, background color, etc. and try again.
If that does't help launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #3 and #5.

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete. -
Slow mac after importing photo library
Hi, I have a macbook pro 2,9ghz intel core i7, 8gb ram, 1 tb harddrive (219gb free). I recently imported my old photo library, wich is quite big and now it seems my mac is slowing down... The library was kind of messy and i had some trouble organizing it so i ran the duplicator anhiliator and it found 35 GB of duplicates wich is now in the iphoto dustbin. Howver - iphoto is riunning very slow - I wonder if it is something in the way the photos are imported - the change in speed certainly happened after the import... It was previously a Picasa photo library - dont know if that matters? Does anyone now how to handle this?
Thanks, FritzI'll try the wired connection tonight - I do have other devices that access photos/mp3's over my wireless network (eg. xbox360) that seem to have no difficulty with speed.
Do you think it would make any difference if I imported in smaller groups (maybe one folder/50 photos at a time) rather than trying to import my entire photo album at once (3000 photos). It might take a few days, but it is a process I could run in the background while I surf. Just curious if iPhoto cares - does it take the same amount of time to import 50 photos 20 times, versus 1000 photos in one shot...?
thanks for the advice

Extensions Load Slow (Mac) After Latest Photoshop Update
I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the below:
(On Mac - Mavericks) The latest Photoshop CC 2014 update has slowed down the loading of my two extension (these are extensions I have created in HTML5). Prior to the update they loaded fine. Also, when I uninstalled one of the extensions and then reinstall it I get error code -180 (no documentation on this error code), I click ok and then open Photoshop and the extension loads (but slow) and when I quit Extension Manger and reopen it the extension shows it is loaded.
No problems with the extension in Windows 7 after the Photoshop update. The extensions load as before the update.
Also, error code -180 is a mystery. I have searched the web and can find no reference to it. Any idea where Adobe lists their error codes?
Any insights on this issue will be appreciated - Sam
PS - When one of my extension pallets displays a blank window, I click in the pallet and the extension loads. Strange! Please post your problem to Photoshop General Discussion so that it can reach more people and get better support.

Slow Startup after Hard Drive Upgrade
I upgraded my hard drive in my iMac. I used a Western Digital Caviar Black 2TB Internal Serial ATA Hard Drive from Best Buy.
I installed Snow Leopard and re-installed everything from scratch (didn't do a restore of anything but some limited data.) I installed Boot Camp and Windows 7. 1.5tb for OSX, half tb for Win.
As soon as I boot camped it, the Startup became very slow. If I hold down the Option key to get to the boot menu, it takes nearly a minute to get to the menu. Previously, it just took a few seconds. Once I choose the boot menu, the boot time is normal.
So the slow down is just getting to the point were boot camp decides which OS to boot. (Sure I'm using the wrong jargon, but hopefully that's clear.) Before the upgrade, it booted so fast you could easily miss the holding down the option key. Now you have about 30-45 seconds to press the Option key and not miss the boot menu.
I have run the disk utility with no errors to report. Once it boots, everything runs well, in either operating system. To reiterate, it booted at about the same speed before the upgrade until I boot camped it.
Also, I initially installed the drive and restored time machine, boot camped it, and restored Windows. This failed as the Windows full system restore screwed up the partitioning. So I started over from scratch. Everything installed normally again, but I'm just wondering if I needed to do some extra step, like a full format or other partitioning, to make sure the drive partition wasn't still messed up. I'm an old DOS guy, and to use those terms, I would have run diskpart and wiped out all partitions, created a new one, and formatted it. I'm not sure I did the equivalent of that in OSX when I re-installed it.
Thanks for reading all that.
-JackThat did help... but, turns out the main culprit was a failing firewire external drive. As I was sitting here, checking out your solution, I had the machine off about to reboot when I heard and felt a vibration in the desk. Fearing my installation of the new hard drive, I looked over the Mac to see a very old WD MyBook vibrating on the desk. I unhooked it and booted and it came up at normal speed. So you indirectly solved my problem, thanks.

Slow connection after 2nd latest upgrade with AUR 8192cu-dkms package
I have a wireless network connection with a "EDUP Ultra-Mini Nano USB 2.0 802.11n 150Mbps Wifi/WLAN Wireless Network Adapter", witch has the rtl8192cu chippset.
From the start I have hade problems with lag, droped packages and slow connection with the original rtl8192cu package. So after a while I installed the 8192cu-dkms package from AUR and it worked prefectly. Before I would just reach speed at between 5 to 60 KB/sec, but after I installed the package I would reach the maximum of ca 800 KB/sec.
After the next to last kernel upgrade (I think it was linux 3.17.3-1-ARCH or 3.16.???-ARCH) the speed droped back down to 15 to 100 KB/sec and it stared to lag. (And yes, I reinstalled 8192cu-dkms everytime I upgraded the kernel.) And the original drivers are still loosing more packages and have slower speed then 8192cu-dkms.
I have other computers on the same network and they allways reach ca 800 KB/sec and I have tried diffirent router settings and I am certain that the problem is with my drivers.
I use wifi-menu to connect to my network, since wpa_supplicant apperantly dosen't work with 8192cu-dkms.
I have tried reinstalling them with no improved results. And I am out of ideas.
Any one have the same problem or a solution?
Is it a good or bad idea to downgrade to the last kernel version were it worked? This is basically my experience with every Realtek wireless chipset I have ever used on Linux. Honeslty, if you have the means, get something else. Realtek does a pretty shitty job writing and maintaining their Linux drivers.
Edit: See this thread for another user's awesome experience of a recent Realtek wireless chipset.
When I was struggling with a rtl8192ce a while back, I remember that there were a few module options that made it run slightly better. This was basically just to set it to use software encryption, and turn off any and all low power states.

HT204655 My photos won't import into Word for Mac after OS X upgrade
After upgrading to the new OS X Yosemite does anyone know how to import photos into Word or Excel for Mac? That library is now grayed out for me and I am in mid-project on Word. I used to be able to copy and paste right into my document, now it seems I must exclusively work within the Photos program.
I actually found that the issue started for me after the MS Office update last week. It was originally working fine with the new Photos for Mac App until the MS Office update. Now Word can't find the photo browser, it only shows Photo Booth. I also can't drag drop photos from the Mac App into Word, like I used to be able to. At the moment I export the photos to a directory then I can input from file in Word. That works, but it's a bit untidy.
I'm thinking off trying the Office 2016 for Mac, which are available now as demos. Unfortunately Microsoft don't reply to questions that are raised, so I'm not sure what the underlying issue is with photo's not working. -
Since I upgraded iTunes to ver 10 I noticed my Mac is slower than before. I encountered several issues that got me to format the whole thing and start from scratch. All goes well but once my MacBook Pro starts syncing with Time Machine or Apple TV the whole system freezes for few minutes before accepting few orders then freezes again.
All works well in the office because I have no Time Machine or Apple TV but once I get home, the whole suffering scenario starts all over again. My only choice would be to turn off the Airport and use the internet via Tethering.
Any suggestions? It didn't work! Here are the results:
