Slow opening of files on DFS

I built a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 VM server, installed DFS and created a namespace.  I then added a folder and moved data from a CIFS share that was near capacity to free up space.  Everything I have mentioned so far was just to alevaite the fact that
the CIFS share was almost full.  I built this server as a temp solution until I got the hardware in to build a new dedicated server for DFS/Storage.  I have built the new Windows 2008 R2 SP1 physical server and also made it a namespace server.
The performance of this server is
Phenomenal.  All the storage is local to the box as I am trying to consolidate all the shares around the network.  I replicated the share from the temp server to the new server and removed the referral from the old server.  I then copied
a few new shares over to the new server and added a folder for each (no replication for these).  I then moved the home drives to DFS.  Everything has been going well for a few weeks.  Yesterday users started reporting slow opening of files,
specifically Excel and Word but I noticed PDFs opened slow also.  This issue currently only affects Windows 7 users but only a handful.  The nic, cpu and memory on the physical server have very low utilization.  I have been unable to isolate
the exact issue but if I point the users to the
\\server\share, the files open VERY fast.  I did notice that when I right-clicked on a mapped DFS drive, the DFS tab showed the status as Unreachable.  I flushed the cache on the client and it went to OKay but file opening is still slow.
After some testing it appears to take almost exactly 50 seconds to open a file every time.  I am going to be away from the office for a few days so I went ahead and changed all the DFS mapped drives to point to
\\server\share for now as I will not get it resolved before i leave.   I also scoured the internet for resolutions and looked at all the related topics that were presented when I typed the title of this thread.
I installed DFSUTIL on a few of the Windows 7 computers experiencing the slowness and the referrals look good.  Every test through DFSUTIL looks fine.
Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I found the self-inflicted issue.  I have a dedicated DFS NameSpace server with 66TB of storage.  The drive that has this attached storage has a folder I created call DFS where all the new DFS folders are pointed.  At this point I should have
reviewed the drive permissions closer.  The default permissions on the drive includes the local USERS group which has special permissions.  The first few shares I moved over already had authenticated users - Modify so all was well.  I then moved
the home folders over and relaized that the local users allowed everyone to view everyone elses home drive.  In a kneejerk reaction I removed the USERS group from the root of the drive which no longer allowed users to access the
\\domain.com\namespace because the DFSRoots folder is also on the same drive.  I guess that since they didnt have access they eventually defaulted back to
\\servername\namespace which caused the delay???
I added the permissions back under the namespace folder and only applied to that folder.  Users can now access the namespace quickly.  At this point I am not sure what the permissions should be for the root drive.  So now my question is:
1.  If I am doing to dedicate a drive to DFS, what should the root permissions be on the drive?  The drive will contain a folder E:\DFS as a root folder for all the shares and another folder named E:\DFSRoots (created by DFS with the default drive
changed from C: to E:) which will obvioulsy hold the namespace.
2.  If a user would lose permissions to the dfs namespace (as they did in my case) how were they eventually able to access the file after the 50 second delay?
Thanks

  • Slow opening of files

When I open a raw file the first time I open CS5, it takes about 30 seconds.  Subsequent files are quick.  Has anyone had this problem?

From memory I believe there were a few things that changed, both in Windows 7 and Office 2010 that can have an impact on the time taken to open a document over a network connection. They mostly relate to additional protections designed to scan the document
for anything dodgy before opening, but in the case of Office, since it does the scan over the network it takes longer to open a network document than older versions, or than opening it locally.
There's a long thread discussing this here
http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/office/en-US/46c082ad-2455-4120-beea-c69ff2219ed9/word-2010-slow-opening-files-on-network-share?forum=officeitproprevious which is worth a look. There are several things which may cause this (depending on your
setup), so hard to judge what it might be in your case.
Since you say that copying the files over the network works correctly this sounds like the issue. Presumably once on the local machine you also don't see any speed issues opening the documents on the newer setups?

  • Very slow opening PDF files from Windows Explorer

When I open a file from within Acrobat X Standard - whether through File>Open or the recent files list - the file opens very quickly.  When I open a PDF file from Windows Explorer, it takes 10 seconds or longer for the file to open.  Is this an Acrobat issue or a Windows/system problem?  (I don't experience the same delay when opening Word and Excel files from Windows Explorer.)

I had to install adobe reader, but   PDF's used to display just fine with IE, any idea what happened ?

  • Fireworks super slow opening pdf files

I am opening the first page of a bunch of pdf files and then batching them into thumbnails. This is relatively quick when I do it on my laptop but when I try and do this on my desktop, it almost takes 20 minutes per file to open. I can open these same files in photoshop in about 5 seconds.
Any ideas why Fireworks on one machine would be slower? Same version my desktop has a little more RAM so it should be faster if anything. Rebooted the computer and still super slow without any other apps running.

  • Illustrator CC 2014 slow opening networked files on some PC's

Have 6 PC's running CC 2014. 5 Win 7 Pro 64, one Home 32. Two weeks ago two of the pro 64 PC's are pausing for 20 seconds opening or saving illustrator files of any size on the network (Server 2008 R2). No issues with any other programs or any of the other PC's. Opening the same file saved on the local HDD is fine. This started I believe after some MS updates about two weeks ago.
Watching the network packets/sec graph selecting the file to open on the network there will be almost no data transfer for 15 seconds then it shoots up and opens even a 15mb file in 1 second. All PC's received the MS updates and I cant figure out why its happening on only two machines. Happens whether opening in explorer on the mapped drive, opening from the file-open menu or opening by browsing the network instead of through the mapped drive.
Everything else is fine, even copying the file takes half a second, its just opening over the network on these two machines.

    Porkkana,
Concerning files from network, it is always recommended here to open/save from/to own hard disk, and to copy from/to networks and removable media. You may be lucky (for a while), but the chances of file corruption and other unpleasantnesses are immensely greater when you use anything but the harddisk, and it is better to be safe than sorry.
In addition to the (far greater) risk of file corruption, some issues are mentioned here:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/kb/illustrator-support-networks-removable-media.html
Concerning the other issues, you may try the list.
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
If possible/applicable, you should save current artwork first, of course.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to at least 5 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Reader 11.0.09 slow opening network files

I have several users that are experiencing slow times opening .PDF's located on a network drive. For users effected a single .PDF can take up to 45 seconds to open. If opened locally issue is not present. To temporarily fix this issue I have had to install version 9.0, but I would like to have them on the updated version for security purposes. All systems are Win7 - 32bit, 8 gigs memory, with different models of Dell laptops and desktops. I have read through all forums that I can find regarding this issue and found no resolution. I have performed the following on systems with issue.
    1. disable "Tool" bar
    2. disable "Enhanced Security" features
    3. applied all "Windows Updates"
    4. switched between SMB 2.0 and SMB 3.0
    5. removed and re-installed "Reader", version 11.0.09 and 11.0.08 - issue is still present

This issue comes out of two things I can see from our last deployment of 11.0.09.
bEnableAcrobatHS needs to be disabled you can do this via registry or using Adobe's packaging tools. The key below needs to be set to a value of "0" zero. this will shut off the desired options.

  • Very slow open cr2-photos

After update to os x 10.9 mavericks, my macbook is very slow open CR2-files. In Quick-look or Preview.app - i have slowdown about 5sec, then photo opens. At 10.8 similar photos open instantly. Seems like something broke after update. My config: Macbook Pro 13" with Retina, Core i7 3GHz, 8Gb RAM, Intel HD 4000. Have ideas?

I am having the exact same problem after just updating to OS X Mavericks. CR2 files take ages before they are shown. In 10.8 these exact same photos loaded very quickly (instantly). In Adobe Bridge these photos show up quickly as well.
I am running a 13" Macbook Pro, Mid 2010 with 8GB of RAM, 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.
Since I use my laptop mainly for photo editing, this is very frustrating. Hopefully there will be a fix soon enough.

  • Very slow responce when working with Office file on DFS-Share

Very slow responce when working with Office file on DFS-Share
We have implemented the following configuration
Domain level Windows 2000. Two member servers with Windows Server 2008 R2, sharing the same DFS namespace with, at the moment, one folder target called Home.
Users complaining that the access to different MS Office files is very slow. Even creating a new MS Word document using right click context menu takes up to 4 minutes to open. Saving, for example, one singe Excel sheet takes also few minutes.
Tested with both, MS Office 2007 and MS Office 2010. Makes no difference. When using Office 2010 you can see the message like contacting:
\\DomainName\Root\Home\UserName. Other files like TXT, JPG or PDF are not affected.
What makes the thing really weird is the fact, that the behavior described above can absolutely change after client machine being rebooted, suddenly everything becomes very fast and this condition can revert back again just after the next
    reboot.
    Considerations until now:
    1. This has nothing to do with the file size. Even tiny files are affected.
    2. AD Sites are configured correctly and the client workstations see themselves in the correct sites.
    3. This is not an Office issue. If I map my folder target not as DFS, but directly as shared network drive
\\ServerName\Root\Home\UserName , everything functions as expected
What makes me suspicious: when using f.e. TCPView to monitor connections, I can see, that each time I make any operation on an office file, there will be a connection established to one of the domain controllers, sometimes to remote ones,
located in other countries. But on the other side, even if the connection is established to the nearest DC, operations are still very very slow!
Just forget to say. All clients are Windows 7
    Thanks to all who respond.

    Dear all,
sorry for the delayed reply. The problem has been solved now and since September 19th. everything is functioning as expected.
    What was done:
Deleted replication targets excepting the initial ones
    Carefully recreated folder targets
    Deleted and recreated  replication groups
Disabled SNP features on both namespace servers
    Created EnableTCPA registry entry
Checked that the following Updates are installed

  • Photoshop cs6 running extremely slow on opening a file. have reset prefs and set type to none.

Photoshop cs6 running extremely slow on opening a file. have reset prefs and set type to none. have to force quit  most of the time.

I'm experiencing the same trouble.  Photoshop takes 5 minutes to open then runs fine.
I recently bought a new iMac AND updated to Adobe Master Collection CS6.  My concern is that PhotoShop now takes 5 minutes to open. The Photoshop desktop pops up immediately, but the moment you click on a tool or try to open a file (no matter the size) results in the spinning wheel for five minutes before you can do anything.  After that, Photoshop appears to work fine.
    What I’ve done:
    Ran Adobe updater
    Reset Photoshop Preferences
Validated all fonts and removed any trouble fonts
    Ran the font test
Set font preview size to none
Cleared the Photoshop type cache and system cache
    Disabled Symantec Endpoint
Tried running with the GPU processor on/off and in basic
Tried opening Photoshop with optional third party plug-ins turned off (still took five minutes but this time I didn’t even get the Photoshop desktop view until AFTER the five minutes)
I’m wondering since I migrated the files form my old computer (and older versions of Master Collection) did something get corrupted.

    Hello,
after upgrading to Mac OS 8.5.3 and 10.9 Maverick'm slow to open PDF files from a Windows 2003 Server share.
In the terminal I get the following errors Print Screen below.
PING to the IP of the share is less than 1 ms.
I'm working with adobe reader for Mac.
    How can I fix this?
    Thanks

  • Excel 2007 Slow Opening File

We were looking at migrating to Office 2007. To verify compatibility, several key users have loaded Office 2007 on their machines. There seems to be several problems related to opening files in Excel.
If Excel is open and the user does a File/Open, files will open quickly. However, if the user clicks on a file to open it, it can take up to a minute to open. I found a fix for this on this forum. It is to add "%1" to the end of the Open command line in the defined file types for XLS files. After this worked, I found that also needs it for the New on XLT, Open for XLSX, New on XLTM, and New XLTX files.
After adding in the above fix I wanted to verify that it worked correctly by recreating the problem so I went in and removed the "%1" from all of the commands. When I tried to open a file, I got an error. So I went back into the File Types and checked the command lines. Now all of the command lines had a %1 at the end of them without the quotation marks. When I would try to delet this %1, it would now allow me to. I could remove it but when I reopened the line, it was back again. If I added the "%1" back to the end of the line it would take that and it would fix the problem again but I was still unable to remove the %1 from the other commands such as New, Print, Save As, etc. I had to Restore my system in order to remove them.
Further testing on the fix reveals that when I file is opened, it attempts to open the file twice. The first time it opens very quickly and then a minute later it opens the second time. Notice that this is the same delay that was experienced previously. It you open the file and make a change before the minute has elapsed, then you get a message stating that the file is already open and if you open it again you will lose your changes. This is probably due to the Use DDE being selected. But If I turn off DDE, then when I click on the first file, it opens quickly and when I click on the second file, it also opens quickly but if I look at the Task Manager, their are 2 copies of Excel running. If I go to the View tool bar in either copy of Excel and try to view the other window, I can not. So it appears that there physically 2 copies of Excel running. When I went back into the File Types, the Use DDE that I had unselected before is now checked again but the DDE command line is blank.
Thinking that may this was something that was surely fixed now that it is 2008 and the software is 2007, I looked for updates and found that IT had not run the updates. Loaded the Compatibility Pack and Service Pack 1 and high hopes that this would correct the problems. After loading the updates, I found that the File Types had reverted back to their original form without the "%1". Now I was really excited. Why would they reset user changes unless they fixed something related to them? To my dismay, the slow startup was back. I had to go back and set the "%1" back into all of the proper command lines.
As of now, my recomendation to IT is to stay as far away from Office 2007 as possible until Microsoft gets their act together.
By the way...I have tried all of the other recomendations from Microsoft about Excel being slow to start. They make a difference of less than 1 second. They also only make the App start quicker. They are not related to clicking on a file to open it.

I didn't seem to get much help from this forum but I will pass on the fix that I have found.
The problem doesn't have anything to do with the %1 fix that everyone is using. All that does is to open the file before Excel is fully started. In particular, before the add-ins are opened.
You can verify this by changing the command line in the File Types to use a /s parameter which will bypass loading the add-ins.
What I found was that even though I had removed the Adobe AcrobatMaker add-in, the file PDFMaker.xla was still in the XLSTART folder and was being loaded.
Since Office now has it's own PDF functionality, this is no longer needed. I did however want to keep Acrobat so that I could print PDFs from other applications and edit PDF files so I wanted to keep it. Just not in Office.
Here are the steps to remove PDFMaker from Excel.
Choose Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.
Select Acrobat Professional and click Change/Remove.
    Click Next.
    Select Modify and click Next.
Expand the Create Adobe PDF menu, then select the Acrobat PDF Maker option, and change the status to "This feature will not be available".
Click Next, and then click Finish to complete the process and allow Acrobat to remove the PDFMaker component. Note: You need the installation disk to do this.
After completing this process, it is interesting that it disabled but did not remove the PDFMaker.xla add-in. It is therefore necessary to remove it manually by exploring to C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART and manually deleting PDFMaker.xla.
Now for those of you who have already tried the "%1" fix and found that it causes new problems and doesn't fix things, you may have already found out that when you try to remove the "%1" from the File Type Open command line, something puts it back in as %1 without the quotation marks. This causes errors when you open a document that has spaces in it's path such as unable to open C:\Documents.xlsx, Unable to open And.xlsx, unable to open Settings.xlsx. No matter how hard you try, you cannot remove the %1.
So here is 2 ways to overcome this.
You can change the parameter from %1 to "%10". This will work as long as you don't try to open 10 files at the same time.
Or you can edit your registry and remove the %1. The easiest way I found was to open the registry editor and search for excel.exe" /e %1. Notice that this is the end of the command line. When I found it, I removed the %1. If you edited more than just the Open command for XLS files, you will need to keep searching until you remove all of the changes. This will get you back to where you were before you tried the "%1" fix.
There may be other add-ins that cause similar problems. Look in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\XLSTART folder to see what is really getting loaded.

  • Adobe reader x very slow opening files over vpn to samba share

Takes 2 to 3 minutes to open a file - Acrobat Pro v7 accesses immediately - downgrade
to Acrobat 7 reader works fine - true on XP and Windows 7 - all updates installed.

I think I have isolated the source of this problem. It's the Pitstop Professional 9 plug in. I un-installed this, and everything opens quicker than greased lightning. I re-installed it and it's back to slowsville.
Unfortunately Pitstop is essential to my workflow.
Until recently I did my pre-press on a Mac G5 with Acrobat Pro 7 and Pitstop 6.5. I never had this problem with slow file opening. But it seems that the delays would occur when I used the plug-in with large complex files.. So it would open files as fast as you'd expect from an elderly machine. But starting to use Pitstop would result in a prolonged period of staring at a spinning beachball.
I wonder is there any way to stop the Pitstop plug-in from initializing until it is used? So the plug-in stays inert until you select the tool from from the menus.

  • Slow first time file/folder, etc. opening

On my G4/450/1.5gb ram/OS9.2.2, the first time I do anything (open a file or folder or even the Apple Menu Items), it's very slow to open. After it opens once, that particular item opens normally from then on, but not subsequent openings of other items. This is a constant problem. I've made no changes to the computer and my memory control panel is set to default. I know the first time normally takes a little longer, but this is much too long; maybe 5 to 7 seconds. Never was this way. Anyone? ... thanx

Now I'd normally say Don has it covered. From the description it sounds like the Finder looking for the icons to display for the items in a folder or the icons for the Apple Menu Items.
But 5 to 7 seconds is a bit excessive for this even with a desktop spread all over the disk.
So only three questions, which may mean nothing at all:
Does it still happen if you boot into Base Extensions (in Extension Manager control panel) ? I'm wondering if it's an extension or control panel used to enhance the appearance of the Finder, something like Kaliedoscope or similar. Just reboot into Base Extensions and see if it is still as sluggish.
1.5GB or RAM, so virtual memory is going to be off (OS9 can't use that much memory). Not an issue, but in the Memory control panel, what size is the Disk Cache ? It's normally a percentage of the installed RAM, but tops out at a specific value, maybe 768K, but you can still set it higher by hand. What is it currently set to ?
Might be the Energy Saver control panel, or someone will correct me if it's something else, do you have the hard disk(s) set to spin down / sleep "whenever possible" ? It's been a while since I booted into OS9, so if the option is not there it may be a third party control panel / extension that offers the functionality. A sleeping hard disk would explain the delay of as large as 5-7 seconds.

  • Acrobat 9 slow to open pdf files through proxy

We are finding that it is very slow to open pdf files from various web sites
though the BorderManager proxy with Acrobat Reader version 9. This is not
the case with earlier versions of Acrobat Reader. We are using
BorderManager 3.8 sp 5. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is there a
proxy.cfg setting I should be looking to change?
    Thanks,
