Slow SMB transfer on Windows 2012R2

Hi,
i have ESXi host with windows 2012R2 and Windows 2008R2 which has 1Gbit network. I am trying to copy a folder from win 2008R2 which is 57MB and has 4084 files. When this folder from win 2008r2 to win 2008r2 i am getting about 10MB/s, but when i copy that
same folder to win2012r2 i am getting transfer speed of 3-4MB/s
I tried following:
Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB2Protocol $false
See:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2696547/en-us
Note: This is just for testing and you can enable it after testing.
If it is SMB related, try to disable the TCP Chimney Offload, Receive Side Scaling and Network Direct Memory Access features.
Information about the TCP Chimney Offload, Receive Side Scaling, and Network Direct Memory Access features in Windows Server 2008
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/951037
Here are the steps to disable RSS, TCP Chimney Offload and NetDMA:
netsh int tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh int tcp set global chimney=disabled
In HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters, double-click the EnableTCPA registry entry.
Note: If this registry entry does not exist, right-click Parameters, point to New, click DWORD Value, type EnableTCPA, and then press ENTER.
To disable NetDMA, type 0 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
I also tried to disable SMB signing (http://mctexpert.blogspot.com/2011/02/disable-smb-signing.html) but no help.
VMs have same configuration (vCPU and memory) What i noticed on 2012r2 is that explorer takes about 23% of CPU while doing copy while on 2008r2 cpu usage is 11%.
I came to a point where i don't know where to look for a problem anyone maybe had same issues? Btw it is NOT vmware problem :).

Hi,
Please try to copy a large file. If the speed is normal, it means that is should not be a SMB issue.
Also, please try to perform a network capture on the server. Check if there are a lot of TCP retransmission in the capture data.
If there is no retransmission, the speed of transmission should be limited by performance of the disk.

  • 10.6.8 Slow SMB browsing of Windows Servers 2008

MY IMAC 21 .5 Inch MAC OS X 10.6.8 slow SMB browsing of windows Server 2008 kindly anybody have any idea why its happened or after LION release maybe this issue will be solve.

Hehe... Servers are tricky things for sure.
It sounds like you're expecting to have users log in from outside your network, but that you're testing from within?  Is this the case?
If your users are trying to log in from outside the local network of the server, then you'll need to ensure that the correct port forwarding is set up on your firewall.
Next thing I'd try...  Simplify your share to ensure that the problem isn't with your group set up.  Eliminate all the ACL's associated with it.
Add one sole user to the ACL, give it read and write, and try to log in using that credential.
Ensure that the POSIX Permissions are set to default.  (administrator should be the owner, staff should be group, read and writable only by the owner, everyone else gets read only)
If that works, remove that user, add a group to the ACL and try and log in using a user that's listed in the new group specified.
Perhaps if you supplied a little more info about your server and how it's connected to it's network.  What it's roles are etc. we might be able to give a little more insight.

  • Slow Data Transfer on Server 2012 R2 Essentials - Can't Disable SMB Signing

I've seen several solve their slow file transfer rates by disabling SMB signing (that is, workstations connected to the server can move files from folder to folder, but it takes forever, whereas if one is logged onto the server through a third-party client
(like TightVNC), one can easily move files from folder to folder--no delay).
I thought I'd do the same as one of my clients is suffering this problem.
Unfortunately, the necessary items ("Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always)" and "Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure channel data (always)") are greyed out and I can't disable them. I'm logged in
    under the administrator account.
    Is there another work around?

    Hi MarKomus,
    à
Unfortunately, the necessary items ("Microsoft network server: Digitally sign communications (always)" and "Domain member: Digitally encrypt or sign secure
channel data (always)") are greyed out and I can't disable them. I'm logged in under the administrator account.
Based on your description, I understand that you want to configure those two group policy settings in client
computer, and then find that they were greyed out and can't be disable.
Just addition, please logon your Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials via Administrator account. Then open Group
Policy Management Editor and follow the path: Computer Configuration-> Policies-> Windows Settings-> Security Settings-> Local Policies-> Security Options, then please check if that two policy settings had been defined and configured in the
    DC.
If anything I misunderstand or any update, please feel free to let us know.
    Hope this helps.

  • Server 4, Very slow SMB on 10.10 Yosemite with windows 7 clients.

A few weeks ago I did the upgrade to server 4 on a Mac mini Server running 10.10.2   The end result is that my windows 7 clients are unable to use windows SMB filesharing.  They connect as normal, but can only achieve a throttled down transfer speed of 256KBps.   Extremely Slow.   FTP from windows 7 explorer to the osx server share is fast as normal.   Any ideas as to why?  This upgrade has completely broke my server.

I tried it with one user,
    I'd run
    sudo find /path/to/folder -name .DS_Store -exec rm {} \;
    on the server.
    Disclaimer:
.DS_Store have their purpose ie they store spotlight comments among other stuff (icon positions, finder view...)

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 Slow LAN Transfer (Receive)

Using Windows 7 Ultimate and Windows Server 2008 R2
Two machines, connected via 1GB 1000base-T LAN, with a 1Gb switch between... and yes, I've tried swapping cables and ports. Server has two RAID5's, a 6 platter and an 8 platter. Workstation has two RAID5's, a 3 SSD and a 4 platter. Both sides using Intel
CPU's and a RealTek 8100C chipset Gb LAN, same LAN drivers.
Using Windows Explorer to COPY a 20GB file:
Server Disk1 to Server Disk 2: >250MB/s (Server disk I/O isn't an issue).
Server Disk2 to Server Disk 1: >250MB/s (Server disk I/O isn't an issue).
    Workstation Disk1 to Disk2: >150MB/s (Workstation disk I/O isn't an issue).
    Workstation Disk2 to Disk1: >150MB/s (Workstation disk I/O isn't an issue).
Server Disk1 to Workstation Disk2: 91MB/s (near 100% LAN utilization).
    All looks good so far:
Workstation Disk2 to Server Disk2: 25MB/s declining to 17MB/s; occasionally as low as 9MB/s.
Some of the changes listed above appeared to work for a few moments. I've seen as high as 90MB/s for a few seconds, but it declines rapidly under 30MB/s... so no fix that has lasted.
It appears there is something in Windows 7 that prevents fast transmits; or something in Windows Server 2008 that blocks fast receives. I have set the server-side receive training to disabled, normal, highlyrestricted, and experimental and the Win7 side
to off, normal, and highlyrestricted in various combinations. Again, nothing concrete to report as an improvement.
What would the MS Gurus suggest I do with NetMonitor as far as capturing something worth their time to diagnose?

I've tried disabling auto tuning on the clients with no appreciable effect. The throttling feature however appears to have had an effect - changing the setting from default 10 to 70 has slowed the transfer from 20MB/s down to about an initial 6MB/s that
has slowed even further, and is now at 3.2MB/s (3% network utilization according to Resource Monitor at both ends of the wire - WS2008R2 and W7).
Question: What does the 10 (0x0a and 70 (0x46) represent: Mbps on the LAN, or 10% and 70% reserved, or?
I'll try the "off" setting of all FF's and add to this.
In any case, having a backup server that can't be utilized due to client "entertainment media" issues is a little painful... there should be a straightforward and published method to set the network to "normal".
    UPDATE:
I've tried settings of 0, 10, 70, and FFFFFFFF. 10 might have been best, but only marginally better than 70. Range of time to copy was under 7 minutes to over 8 minutes. Very small difference.
But I also tried this using Windows Explorer and a Dataset of one folder containing 12.5GB of miscellaneous folders and files - and was surprised.
     - Dataset is at \\WIN7\Dx\ = = Client physical RAID5 drive D:\Dataset
On WIN7 Client: Share drive D with Everyone as Dx
On WSvr Server: Share drive D with Everyone as Dx
    On WIN7 Client: Map \\WSvr\Dx to Z:
On WSvr Server: Map \\WIN7\Dx  to Z:
On WIN7 Client, using Windows Explorer:
-- Copy Dataset from Local Drive D: to Network Drive Z:
-- Took about  8 minutes, with 20% network utilization.
On WSvr (2008 R2 Server), using Windows Explorer:
-- Copy Dataset from Network Drive Z: to Local Drive D:
-- Took about 3 minutes, and 70% network utilization.
Why does running the copy from the server allow better network utilization and net throughput?
    UPDATE2:
I am NOT using HOMEGROUP; I have a dedicated workgroup network the client is a member of, and the server is a DC. I'll eventually try joining the client to the domain and see if that changes anything, but doubt it will so haven't taken the time yet.

  • Slow network transfer on 10.5.8

Hello we have about a dozen machines running 10.5.8 and we have one windows file server running Grouplogic Extreme Z IP. The connection type is AFP.  On one of the machines, although it appears to work well, it tranfers files very slow from the server. It takes 5 minutes to transfer a 2mb file. The machine is a dual processor Mac Pro with Gig ethernet. All the other machines work perfectly and transfer files very fast.
When I transfer files with SMB from another windows server  machine, the transfer is normal. I would love to think its the server but the other 11 machines work fine and they are all same hardware and software. All machines are joined to our Active Directory system.
I tried almost all the troubleshooting I know, there are no errors on the switch, no dropped packets. Verified with Netowk Utility. I tried to unbing and rebing the machine to AD.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Aristotle Zoulas

That's correct the backup drive has 2 partitions one for the MBP and one for the powermac. I thought of that also, the drive is brand new and when the problem started I repartitioned the drive and switched the MBP and the PM partitions with no effect.

Sync is only oneway, from PC to your device.  Unless you have the music on your PC, iTunes is going to wipe out what you have on your device if you are syncing to a new library.
You can only transfer Purchased music over to Itunes on your PC.

  • Limiting Memory Usage of Exchange 2010sp1 store.exe on a Windows 2012r2 Server?

    Hello,
I am running Windows 2012r2 Server with Exchange 2010sp1, 1 forest and 6 mailboxes. So this is not a heavy load for Exchange 2010sp1 to handle. The problem is the Windows 2012r2 server is also used as a file storage server. The problem is the Exchange 2010sp1
is using most of the 16GB of ram available and slowing down the server. Is it possible to limit the Exchange 2010sp1 store.exe to use less memory and if so what are the steps in Windows 2012r2 to complete this task.
I have read that it can be done through ADSI Edit. But the steps they explain are not for Windows 2012r2 and do not match.
    Thank You,
    Stan

    Hi Stan,
Did you change msExchESEparamCacheSizeMax and msExchESEparamCacheSizeMin both attribute of Information Store?
    Start ADSIEDIT.msc Navigate to Configuration > Services > Microsoft Exchange > <Organization Name> > Administrative Groups > <Administrative Group> > Servers > <Server Name> > InformationStore
    http://eightwone.com/2011/04/06/limiting-exchange-2010-sp1-database-cache/
That ADSIEdit path shouldn't be different on Windows 2012 R2 because it doesn't depend on operating system and it should be always same in Configuration partition of Active Directory.
    Besides....
Exchange 2010 SP1 (and SP2) is not supported now so suggest you upgrade to SP3. http://blogs.technet.com/b/rmilne/archive/2013/01/04/end-of-exchange-2010-sp1-support.aspx

  • FCP 7 Freezes During Simultaneous Finder SMB Transfer

Hi everyone!  I'm supporting our video team who uses Final Cut Pro 7 on their new 27" iMacs (OS 10.8.5, 3.4ghz, 3tb Fusion Drive, 32gb RAM) and need some insight into a strange issue.  Every time they conduct a file transfer to our SMB servers on campus (an unrelated file to what they are working on in FCP7), Final Cut will freeze and become essentially useless.  The spinning wheel of death only happens to FCP 7 during the transfer, all other apps function without issue.  I've tried using Terminal to tweak the default SMB transfer settings, however this did not help.  The second the file transfer completes, FCP goes back to normal. This is replicated across both iMacs.
I checked the activity monitor and it reports there is still 25gb of free memory.  Due to the specs of the machine, I do not believe this to be a resource issue.  I looked through the console logs and didn't find much of anything.  I did find a few lines of the "____ is implemented in both... and...  One of the two will be used.  Which one is undefined" as well as a "ProKit's NSWindow addition -setActiveAppearanceDuringRestore: has been deprecated and does nothing on SnowLeopard... Please remove this call method." However, from what I've already seen on the forums these should not be contributing to this issue.
The next steps I plan are:
    1) Try to replicate this issue in Safe Mode to rule out bad plist files
    2) Attempt a local (folder to folder) and then a transfer to an external drive to see if the same slowness issue occurs when it is not an SMB transfer
I'll post the results of the above, but are there any other things you guys can think of?  Have you experienced this issue?  Any insight would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank you

Is it possible that it is a product of using 10.8.5 with FCP7?
Could be some change in the SMB protocol. OSX 10.6.8 was the last version that was certified for use with FCS. Anything after that and you (and me) are on our own.
Having said that,  I do not have the same issue. All my network shares are via AFP.
Sorry I can't help you more than that.
    Good luck.

  • Leopard Upgrade and Loss of File Transfer to Windows PC

Loss of File Transfer to Windows PC - I successfully upgraded my MacBook to Leopard with the following exception where I was previously able to transfer files to a Windows PC. I can still connect to the PC but unable to see the folders in "finder" or move files over to it. I can still do this however from my other Mac (iMac) which is still on Tiger. What would the upgrade have done to prevent file transfer being done?
    Thanks Neil

I had similar problems with browsing Windows shares... Initially I performed an Upgrade installation of Leopard. A temporary work-around was to use the IP address of the Windows computer.
For example (in the Connect To Server dialog) use:
    smb://<IP address>/sharename
Obviously, you'll have to determine the local network IP for your Windows computer and know the name of the share. You can do this by opening up a CMD window and issuing the following command at the prompt:
    ipconfig/all
    Hope that wasn't too "technical".
Note: What fixed the whole problem for me was to perform a clean installation of Leopard... Now all the Windows computers on the network appear under Shared in the Finder sidebar.

  • Slow network printing on Windows 7, fast on Windows XP

My system is dual boot. I can either boot in XP SP3 (32 bit) or Win 7 (64 bit). When I print an 8MB file to my CM2320nf over the network through XP, it takes 5 seconds to transfer the data from my PC to the printer. When I print the exact same file using Win 7, it takes 45 seconds to transfer the data.
Since both times they are printed from the exact same PC, this rules out stuff like settings on the printer, or router/switch settings, etc. It must be something in Windows 7 causing the slow data transfer.
I've compared settings in XP and Win 7, and the only difference is the Print Processor used. In XP, HPZPP5k4 is used. On Win 7, it's hpcpp03. Could this be the cause for the slow printing in Windows 7? How can I add/install a print processor in Windows (and where can I find/download HPXPP5k4.dll anyway)?

    Hi Kenneth,
Here for your case suggest you to configure RDP session time limit so that your user can disconnect\log off once the specific time limit reached.
You can setup the session time limit in different method.
    1. Open the Server Manager, select Remote Desktop Services.
    2. In Remote desktop Services, in right side you can drop down to collections.
    3. Select the collection which you want to edit the settings.
    4. Under collections Properties, select Task and then Edit Properties.
    5. In Properties dialog box, select Session.
    6. You can find all thetimeout settings under session collection properties; edit according to your requirements and then OK.
And apart also by group policy setting as below.
    Computer Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
    User Configuration\Policies\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Remote Desktop Services\Remote Desktop Session Host\Session Time Limits
    -  Set time limit for disconnected sessions
    -  Set time limit for active but idle Remote Desktop Services sessions
    -  Set time limit for active Remote Desktop Services sessions
    -  End session when time limits are reached
Please check which setting suitable for your environment and you can apply for your case.

  • Sharepoint 2010 on Windows 2012R2 and claims based authentication

    Hello,
We have installed a sharepoint 2010 SP2 CU dec 2014 on a Windows 2012R2 server.
    The installation went without problems.
However, we want to use claims based authentication on a certain web app pool.
Therefore some configuration on IIS is required.
The first issue we ran into, is the web application pool uses ASP.NET 2.0, which is the default settings.
However, using this ASP.NET Version 2.0 the feature "Providers" and ".net users" are invisible.
When changing the .net version to 4.0, the features comes back again.
I can fill in the connection strings without problem.
The providers feature however, gives me the following errors:
There is a duplicate .... sections defined.
When googling on this error, it seems that on .net 4.0 these sections are already globbally defined in the machine.config, So i removed these entries in the machine.config
These are the lines that are "double"
    <section name="scriptResourceHandler" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingScriptResourceHandlerSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false"
    allowDefinition="MachineToApplication"/>
    <section name="jsonSerialization" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingJsonSerializationSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false" allowDefinition="Everywhere"
    />
    <section name="profileService" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingProfileServiceSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false" allowDefinition="MachineToApplication"
    />
    <section name="authenticationService" type="System.Web.Configuration.ScriptingAuthenticationServiceSection, System.Web.Extensions, Version=4.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" requirePermission="false"
    allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" />
So after removing these lines, i can get into Providers feature in IIS.
but, when i click on "Add..." i get the following error:
    Add Provider
There was an error while performing this operation.
    Details:
This method cannot be called during the application's pre-start initialization phase.
    OK
I spent to much time already to solve this issue and i hope  that someone can give me some advice to address this issue.

  • I want to transfer my Windows files from my Clickfree external drive to my new iMac. iMac recognizes the drive but won't read the files. What should I do? My PC hard drive is dead so I can't hook up my iMac to that.

I'm switching from Windows to iOS. But my new iMac won't allow me to transfer my Windows files on my Clickfree HD425 over to the iMac. It initialy didn't even recognize my hard drive during set up, so I manually went through Finder where it recognized the Clickfree drive. But my files wouldn't appear. I can't go back to my original Windows computer because the hard drive crashed, and that's why I bought this new iMac in the first place. What should I do? As a Mac newbie who was reluctant to exit the Windows world, I don't want my original babystep into the iOS world soured by my first experience.

Hi Rick, & a warm welcome!
In Disk Utility on the Mac, what Format does it say the drive is?
