Why is the upgrade to Yosemite so slow? Taking 22+ hours to upgrade.

Try this.
Safari
Go step by step by step and test.
1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
    Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
    Restart the computer.
    Start up in Safe Mode.

2. Delete Caches.db
    Close all windows and quit all applications.
    Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
    Select "Library" from the dropdown.
    Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db
    Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.
    Close windows and relaunch Safari.
3. Empty Caches
    Safari > Preference > Advanced
    Checkmark the box for "Show Develop menu in menu bar".
    Develop menu will appear in the Safari menu bar.
    Click Develop and select "Empty Caches" from the dropdown.
4. Delete Cookies
    Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
    Click “Remove All Website Data”.
5. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
    Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
    Turn on those one by one and test.
6. Deselect Proxies if selected.
    System Preference > Network > Advanced > Proxies Tab
    Under "Select Protocol", uncheck any box if selected.
    Click "OK" then "Apply”.

New Mac Mini is Slow, Upgrade RAM?

I have a new Mac Mini. Considering the cost, it is surprisingly slow. It has 2GB of RAM and I think that may be the problem. What sort of speed increase can I expect with an upgrade to 8GB? The main problem seems to be swapping and switching between applications.
Is a RAM upgrade likely to fix this issue?

Wait, what? Someone actually listened to advice from someone who has been developing software for 33 years!?
Yeah, RAM matters if you're doing something like video editing or 3D graphics or even some sort of heavy Photoshop. Or if you are running numerous Chrome tabs at once or something like that. But it would have to be heavy use indeed if you're running into slowdown with 8 gigs.
What filesharing apps do, basically, is this: they have a buffer in memory, which might be a few megs. They fill that buffer up, then they write that buffer to disk. This is so it's not thrashing your disk all the time with tiny writes, but on the other hand, you wouldn't want it to download a gig before writing to disk: what if the computer crashed and you had to download all that data again?
Once you have 8 gigs, the MOST BANG FOR THE BUCK BY FAR is an SSD drive. In fact, I have a Windows gaming machine with 4 gigs from 2007 that still runs most of what I need just fine, and an SSD just drove the performance out the roof. You want a second larger drive on the thing, which is where you store non-speed-critical apps and all your data, and then a 100-200 gig SSD is where you put your OS and speed-critical apps, and loading it from there is far far faster than off of a conventional hard disk. This isn't something you'd want to install yourself on a Mac Mini though.

Quad G5 Stability Problems / Slowness / Upgrade options?

Well, this is going to be a long post, so bear with me.
First, I'm totally Steve Job's dream. I bought the Mac Mini and it was a complete gateway drug, now I have a brand new PowerMac G5 Quadcore something or other. Okay. I use it for motion graphics work, mostly After Effects, but I've also got Final Cut Studio installed. I've had the G5 for a month now (I know it's almost obsolete by Mactel, but AE and Photoshop won't be available on Mactel for, like, eternity, so I upgraded early.)
So that's the setup. My problem is, the G5 quadcore tower is way less reliable than the Mac Mini was! The thing that impressed me about OS X and the mini was that nothing ever went wrong. I could be burning a DVD, listening to something on iTunes and doing a complex AE render, and Mac mini would figure it all out. I never had to reboot Mac mini unless a software update demanded it.
I've had two occassions now where the G5 tower completely crashed. I'll go over them in details.
The first time, I was using AE and previewing on a camcorder/TV over Firewire. So the set up is, PowerMac -> camcorder (Firewire) -> TV (S-video).
Okay, the first thing I did that might be weird is: I was running activity monitor during my AE renders to see the extent to which 4 cores were actually being used. I discovered to my surprise that even during my most complicated renders, PowerMac was only using 50% of its processing power. It engaged all 4 cores, but each of them never went over the 50% or maybe 60% utilitization. So either AE just isn't optimized, or there's an upgrade I should perform. (See details below.)
Okay, next weird thing. I put PowerMac to sleep with the camcorder still on, and woke PowerMac up a little later to continue working. Now I'd left the camcorder on this whole time. When I went back into AE and told it to preview to the Firewire again, PowerMac froze. I got the spinning beach ball. I thought, "Oh, sometimes that happen, I'll just wait and let PowerMac sort itself out." An hour later, though, I still had the spinning beach ball, so I had to reboot.
A day or so later, something similar happened. I was doing a complex render in AE. I had 20 minutes remaining. Knowing that the CPU was only used to 50%, I decided to watch the latest Channel Frederator in iTunes while the render completed. I turned iTunes to full screen mode to watch Frederator. After about ten minutes of this, I got a freaking KERNEL PANIC! I got weird text dumped at the top of the screen, and a sound sample from the Frederator I was watching was repeating over and over out of the speakers. Unfortunately I didn't think to write down the weird text.
So here (at last) are my questions:
1. Why is PowerMac only using 50% of its CPU during renders? (Bear in mind, AE isn't GPU-enabled to my knowledge. So its renders are all CPU.) My only guess is, that the renders are memory or disk constrained. Adobe does recommend that I get a second hard drive for AE to store its temporary working files, so that AE and the OS X swap space aren't competing with each other. Does this make sense to anyone else? Also, I have 1.5 gig memory, is that too little?
2. What is up with these crashes? This is like Windows XP land. Again, what sold me on the all-Mac graphics setup was the stability of the Mac mini.
2.a. Are there hardware diagnostics or software tests built-in to OS X that I can run to troubleshoot?
2.b. While setting up PowerMac, I copied system settings (and everything else) from Mac mini. I'm worried that there's a configuration file somewhere that's confusing PowerMac into thinking it's secretly a Mac mini or something. Of course, when I say that out loud, it sounds completely silly.

Quad G5 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

1. Only certain filters and effects in AE are well multithreaded and can take advantage of the four cores. I use AE a lot as well, and I can tell you this is normal. What you want to consider is buying the Nucleo plug-in from Gridiron Software at http://www.gridironxfactor.com/products/nucleo_overview.asp
This plug-in will allow AE to fully utilize all four cores on almost anything you're working on, except for effects that are temporally dependent, such as Particle Playground. You need to be using AE 6.5 or 7 to use Nucleo. I bought it and it's one of the best things I could've done. However, your 1.5 GB of RAM is rather small for using AE on a Quad. I'd consider bumping the RAM up to 4 - 4.5GB or so. If you AE 7, it can utilize 3 GB of RAM (previous versions were limited to 2GB).
2. I bet you got the beachball when you returned from sleep because the camera had also gone to sleep and didn't wake up. I imagine that if you'd turned the camera off after waking up from sleep (or power cycled the camera - turn it off and then right back on) the beachball wouldn't have occured or would have gone away. I'm pretty sure I've had this happen to me on my Quad and PowerBook, and this always solved it. Not sure as to the reasons for the KP you got when using iTunes... sorry.
2a. Your machine would have come with the Apple Hardware Test which can be used to test the hardware of your machine. It's on the restore disc that came with the computer. You'l need to boot from the CD while holding down the option key. This will present you with a list of boot options, one of which will be the AHT. For testing memory, I'd recommend using Memtest which you can get a http://www.memtestosx.com For best results, you need to start in single-user mode so that it can test as much RAM as possible.
2b. I did a clean install of all my applications and whatnot on my Quad to avoid a problem like this... It's very time consuming, though. If you're concerned about this, you could delete all the preferences files from the computer and reboot, but you'll then have to reset your prefs in all your apps, and may have reenter some serial numbers as well. In any event, I wouldn't try this unless you start to have frequent issues. My Quad has KP'd once (while using Toast, I believe), but hasn't done so since. My PowerBook has never had a kernel panic.

Slow upgrade to LION

Why is Apple telling me I have to wait for 7 to 10 days for the free LION upgrade? I just bought a MacPro 1 day before the LION release. Some Apple service people said 24 hours, some said 48 hours..now the latest is they tell me 7 to 10 days! Rediculous!!!

I have been seeing it come up on my system for utility permission repairs, that may be something that's still hacking my system down.
I've been having nothing but crashes, and a safe boot may be in order for you to see if it's that account or system wide.
You could do all the normal things they will end up telling you, including PRAM flush, etc, but what helped my system personally, a 2009, 2gb, maCBOOK 13", was to deactivate or remove the startup items (copy to disk if you're not sure), and also deleting APPLEJACK, by far the biggest improvement. Since then, my system is only locking up when I try to BACKUP to time machine, although in my TEST ADMIN account that was created after the problems, I am currently backing up from there, it remains tobe seen if it holds, or if I can access the data, because I was trying to restore back to SNOW, and there was a bunch of EMPTY folders. :-(
Let everyone know what's worked for you...
One thing I noticed about your post besides the userevent*, was that you mentioned 30 minutes. THIS is exactly about how long I have BETWEEN crashes and lock ups before I removed the Applejack.

Slow Upgrade to 785GM-E65

Hi,
I am interested in migrating my current HTPC (Asus M2A-VM HDMI) to the 785GM-E65 motherboard. I want to take advantage of some existing components however, as I don't want to absorb the expense all at once. I've read various online reviews and have gotten some conflicting data. My questions:
Is this mobo compatible with AM2+ CPUs? I want to use a Phenom X4 9750 for now, and move to an Athlon II X3/4 at a later time
Can I use DDR2 800Mhz memory with this unit? Again, with this notion of moving to DDR3 in the future.

No, the board only takes AM3 CPU and DDR3 memory.

To reuse parts you need to take an AM2+ (AM3 ready) board with DDR2 slots.
Then you cvan use AM2(+) and AM3 CPU's, but not DDR3 memory.
If you goto an AM3 board you have to move all of it now.
Else go AM2+ board and you can use an AM3 CPU in it later (if the board is AM3 ready)

The upgrade hangs a lot of time in phase PARCONV_UPG, SHADOW_IMPORT_UPG2..

In the phases RUN_RADCUCNT_ALL, SHADOW_IMPORT_UPG2,....has been a lot of time.
In the Note OSS 558197 - upgrade hangs in PARCONV_UPG, XPRAS_UPG, SHADOW_IMPORT_UPG2, there is a solution
for a Oracle Database, but we have MSSQL2005 in a Windows Server.
In this moment in our DB we have applied as say the Note OSS 187493 - DB13 jobs 'Check table Consistency'
and 'Update statistics', and sometimes in the biggest tables we apply the Note OSS 771352 - Manual UPDATE STATISTICS
re-enables Disabled Automatic Stats
Can you help us? In this moment the upgrade downtime is 48 hours (and we haven't yet done some phases of the
upgrade)

Here is the down and skinny on this - PARCONV_UPG can be addressed with ICNV (Incremental Table Conversion) which you can run during the 'Up' Time of the upgrade. Of course there are some limitations put on you when using this solution but it will help to reduce your down-time windows be pre-converting tables during up-time. Those tables that are not converted in ICNV will have to be converted during down-time during the PARCONV_UPG phase so I am pretty sure that your database is getting its (stuff here....) handed to it.
As a 'suggestion' and not a rule here (because it effects recovery of SQL Databases) you can look at using Bulk Logged or Simple Logged modes if your system is using Full-Logged mode to speed things up a bit (actually quite a bit if Full-Logged is enabled).
As for the SHADOW_IMPORT_UPG2 - this is mostly going to be tp putting things in the system and some compiling - the speed of the Db and the processors play a big impact in this. You can watch the SLOG in the upgrade directory to check this out (look in your upgrade guide for Log Files during this phase to get their names and locations) to see if anything is hanging but I would probably expect not much is going on.
Overall you need to identify the bottleneck first - CPU, Memory, Db I/O, a number of things can contribute to your issues of slow upgrade time - as I would have to agree with SAP that there is nothing wrong with the Upgrade Process (except that you can take advantage of things like ICNV where possible - read the upgrade guide and hit the notes and help first!!). Everything else is going to be your setup and how it reacts to the different activities in the upgrade.
So check those out first - let us all know what you come up with and hopefully we can fix your problem directly and quickly.

Are there problems upgrading Sarfari to install iTunesU?

I want to install iTunesU on my iMac desktop and was directed to upgrade my Safari from 5.1.10 and also my OS as well. I started to do that and then saw comments indicating slow upgrade times and crashes caused by doing these upgrades. I'd like to know if it is OK to proceed with those upgrades.

It's an update, not an upgrade. There's a difference.
You can update your OS X software including iTunes and Safari all at the same time.
Make sure your OS X software is up to date.
Click the Apple  top left in your screen.
From the drop down menu click: Software Update
That will launch the App Store when you can download the updates.
How long it takes to download your updates is determined by your internet service provider.

Can I download OS X Lion when I have OS 10.5.8 without having to get the 10.6 upgrade?

I have a mid 2008 Macbook 13" and I've never done an OS upgrade. I am really interested in Lion tho, so I was wondering if I could upgrade to it, skipping the OS 10.6 (as its 29.99) from my OS 10.5.8. I read horrible reviews about 10.6 as well. If I can't do it, which seems like the more possible answer seeing as I don't have access to the Mac App Store, does anybody else have a better experience with OS 10.6? It doesn't really take a lot to convince me, just a really compelling argument :3

Many of the people who post here for the first time are trying to solve specific problems, so that often 'colors' many discussion topics toward the negative experiences, rather than the positive ones.
Are you near the point of wanting to purchase (or perhaps being financially able to purchase) a new Mac?
Are you happy with the performance and appearance of the one you have now in all respects?
How much RAM and free hard disk space you have? Is it worth another $50 to $100 to upgrade RAM and perhaps another $50 to $100 to upgrade your hard disk?
Are there compelling 'must have' features of 'Lion' that are worth $60 to upgrade: $29 to get to 10.6.6 or 10.6.7, then another $30 to upgrade to 10.7 when it is released?
Your total investment is likely to be closer to $200 or $250 if you also need RAM and a hard drive capacity increase, plus the cost of the two OS upgrades, depending upon where you purchase and who does the installation. But you probably cannot buy any newer MacBook for anywhere close to $300. I've seen a used mid-2007 MacBook like mine listed at a used system reseller like MegaMacs for up to $500, depending upon condition and OS version included.
I have a mid-2007 MacBook with 4Gb RAM (3 usable) and a 500Gb 7200 rpm hard drive. I haven't experienced major problems with 10.6.x, but I waited to upgrade until last fall (2010) when there were programs I wanted that required 10.6.x: FaceTime for Mac and the Mac App Store, because I live about 30 miles from the nearest Apple Store. I didn't have any upgrade problems, or notice significant performance changes (faster or slower) upgrading to Snow Leopard 10.6 from Leopard 10.5. I contrast that with my Windows PC days when each new Microsoft Windows generation seemed to need an order of magnitude greater processor speed and hard drive capacity just to run applications at the same 'speed' as what you were used to having on the prior system!
The major benefit of 'staying current' is that new programs are tested-with and developed-for the latest releases of OS X.
And finally, is there someone, perhaps a student, friend, or family member, who could make good use of your current Mac for several more years for writing papers, retrieving email, and web-browsing if you 'gifted' your Mac to them?

Update has now nbeen running for hours. Says only a minute left and has done for the last 45 minutes. Seriously crap. Then I try plugging into my £1,000 MacBook Pro: it tells me I can't sync as I need the 11.1 iTunes update on my phone. Hmmmm.
At this moment in time, I fecking loathe Apple's iOS7 update. It's created problems, not fixed them. What kind of research did they perform on this garbage? Any at all? Honestly, how the **** did it get this bad?
Mine is not an isolated incident either. Many, many of my frineds are MacHeads and they all report similar problems from slow upgrades to failed units. This is an extremely pathetic attempt, Apple.

Although i share your feelings and are not very happy with iOS 7 myself i think your should rethink how to express this anger. Since this is a user to user forum and apple will not directly read in here you can go to www.apple.com/feedback to tell them. If you lower the tone down a bit it is much more likely that your feedback will be considered.

I need to replace my 5D Mark II. I own 5 professional Canon camera's and a wide pro lens assortment. But I'm getting bored with the slow upgrades. The pricy repairs. Thinking of swapping to another brand if Canon doesn't take business serious anymore.
Canon please upgrade faster, be ahead of the competition by performing & developping way better.

I suppose it could happen. It seems a little unlikely considering that the 70D isn't due till Sept., but I would be surprised if Canon didn't try to get something out before the holiday season.
Canon has been recycling their old sensors for awhile now but it looks like they’re finally ready to launch the next gen. Hopefully it’s everything it’s cracked up to be and Canon will be back on top of the sensor game for a couple years. Can’t wait to see the new tech in the full frame department.
All that said… it’s just a sensor, it’s (camera) just a tool. I find it’s more often my creativity or skill that is lacking, not the technology in my hands.

Poor performance of Aperture 3

This product is extremely slow. Had Aperture 2(really slow) - upgraded to Aperture 3 (even worse). It took over 15 min to do simple crop. The software has taken over the machine. Cannot access the tool or menu bars. Only way to get the machine back is shut it off and re-start. Has anyone else had this experience and is there a fix?

As others have indicated, there's a lot of hints in messages already posted that may be helpful. Are you running the latest version of Leopard as your profile indicates only that you use 10.5. You should be on 10.5.8 if possible. Better again if you are are on latest version of Snow Leopard, 10.6.3.
You may be severely constrained by memory depending upon what you have on your iMac and what else is running with Aperture. Aperture requires 1 GB but will certainly run much better with 2 or 3 GB memory.
You may also have an internal hard disk that is nearly full causing the operating system and Aperture to take so long to complete a simple action as it scrambles to find some space. What is the size of your internal hard disk containing the Aperture 3 Library and how much free space do you have on the drive?

Everything seems to go slowly on my macbook?

This has been the same since I got this macbook, but is the processing power between a desktop computer and a macbook just that different? Everything opens slowly. Everything closes slowly, etc.
Is there any way to speed up my computer? I've deleted everything that I could on it and it's still pretty slow.

consider downloading and running EtreCheck http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck and posting its result here. It will give us a good look at your system to see if there are any obvious problems causing your slow down. EtreCheck is a small app written by one of the contributors in this community to help diagnose problems.

Since installing LTR 5.4, which I've now upgraded to 5.6, I've encountered repeated slowness and malfunctions in operations, especially when using the Compare View function and the Tab key to open and close the right and left side panels. Such problems never arose during two years of using LTR-4 and nothing else has changed on my computer. I have a pretty simple system with only a few plug-ins, which are usually not in operation. I have 12GB of RAM in my Windows 7 PC. I could illustrate these problems with screen shots if you would tell me how to submit screen shots. Otherwise I will try to describe the problems in words.
The problem is clearly cumulative, growing worse as usage time passes. Compare View feature gradually slows down and eventually seems to choke as my work session proceeds. If I Exit LTR and re-enter and start all over, things will work normally for maybe 30 minutes, but then the Compare View feature begins to become very slow to respond. In a recent example with my screen full of thumbnails in Library mode I highlighted two images to compare. LTR started to open the Compare View screen by first having the top row of thumbnails disappear to be replaced by the "SELECT" and "CANDIDATE" words in their spaces (but no images), but Compare View never succeeded in gaining control of the screen. After some seconds the top row of thumbnails reasserted its position and the Compare View windows disappeared. But LTR kept trying to bring them back. Again the top row of thumbnails would go away, Select and candidate would reappear, try again, and give up. This went on for at least 2-3 minutes before I tried to choose File and Exit, but even that did not initially want to respond. It doesn't like to accept other commands when it's trying to open Compare View. Finally it allowed me to exit.
To experiment I created a new catalog of 1100 images. After 30-40 minutes, the Compare View function began to operate very slowly. With left and right side panels visible and two thumbnails highlighted, hitting Compare View can take half a minute before the two mid-size images open in their respective SELECT and CANDIDATE windows. When the side panels are open and two images are in the Select/Candidate spaces, hitting the Tab button to close the side panels produces a very delayed response--25-30 seconds to close them, a few more seconds to enlarge the two images to full size. To reverse the process (i.e., to recall the two side panels), hitting Tab would make the two sides of the screen go black for up to a minute, with no words visible. Eventually the info fields in the panels would open up.
I also created a new user account and imported a folder of 160 images. After half an hour Compare View began mis-placing data. (I have a screen shot to show this.) CANDIDATE appears on the left side of SELECT, whereas it should be on the right. The accompanying camera exposure data appears almost entirely to the left of the mid-screen dividing line. Although the Candidate and Select headings were transposed, the image exposure data was not, but the data for the image on the right was almost entirely to the left of the line dividing the screen in two.
Gurus in The Lightroom Forum have examined Task Manager data showing Processes running and Performance indicators and they see nothing wrong. I could also send screen shots of this data.
At this point, the only way I can process my images is to work 30-40 minutes and then shut down everything, exit, and re-start LTR. This is not normal. I hope you can find the cause, and then the solution. If you would like to see my screen shots, tell me how to submit them.

Such problems never arose during two years of using LTR-4 and nothing else has changed on my computer. I have a pretty simple system with only a few plug-ins, which are usually not in operation. I have 12GB of RAM in my Windows 7 PC. I could illustrate these problems with screen shots if you would tell me how to submit screen shots. Otherwise I will try to describe the problems in words.
The problem is clearly cumulative, growing worse as usage time passes. Compare View feature gradually slows down and eventually seems to choke as my work session proceeds. If I Exit LTR and re-enter and start all over, things will work normally for maybe 30 minutes, but then the Compare View feature begins to become very slow to respond. In a recent example with my screen full of thumbnails in Library mode I highlighted two images to compare. LTR started to open the Compare View screen by first having the top row of thumbnails disappear to be replaced by the "SELECT" and "CANDIDATE" words in their spaces (but no images), but Compare View never succeeded in gaining control of the screen. After some seconds the top row of thumbnails reasserted its position and the Compare View windows disappeared. But LTR kept trying to bring them back. Again the top row of thumbnails would go away, Select and candidate would reappear, try again, and give up. This went on for at least 2-3 minutes before I tried to choose File and Exit, but even that did not initially want to respond. It doesn't like to accept other commands when it's trying to open Compare View. Finally it allowed me to exit.
To experiment I created a new catalog of 1100 images. After 30-40 minutes, the Compare View function began to operate very slowly. With left and right side panels visible and two thumbnails highlighted, hitting Compare View can take half a minute before the two mid-size images open in their respective SELECT and CANDIDATE windows. When the side panels are open and two images are in the Select/Candidate spaces, hitting the Tab button to close the side panels produces a very delayed response--25-30 seconds to close them, a few more seconds to enlarge the two images to full size. To reverse the process (i.e., to recall the two side panels), hitting Tab would make the two sides of the screen go black for up to a minute, with no words visible. Eventually the info fields in the panels would open up.
I also created a new user account and imported a folder of 160 images. After half an hour Compare View began mis-placing data. (I have a screen shot to show this.) CANDIDATE appears on the left side of SELECT, whereas it should be on the right. The accompanying camera exposure data appears almost entirely to the left of the mid-screen dividing line. Although the Candidate and Select headings were transposed, the image exposure data was not, but the data for the image on the right was almost entirely to the left of the line dividing the screen in two.
Gurus in The Lightroom Forum have examined Task Manager data showing Processes running and Performance indicators and they see nothing wrong. I could also send screen shots of this data.
At this point, the only way I can process my images is to work 30-40 minutes and then shut down everything, exit, and re-start LTR. This is not normal. I hope you can find the cause, and then the solution. If you would like to see my screen shots, tell me how to submit them.
