Sluggish Flash Builder 4.5.1 performance on Mac OS X Lion

I recently acquired an iMac with Core i7 3.4GHz CPU, 8GB of RAM.  The system is brand new with nothing but Flash Builder installed.  I have similar setup on Windows which is running on an 3-yo laptop sporting Win7 x64, 1.6GHz low voltage Core 2 Duo CPU and 8GB of RAM.  Since the laptop is my primary computer, so it is constantly running other apps such as Outlook, Doc, etc.
My project consists of 3 library projects and two application projects on Mac.  I have set the IDE to turn off automatic build as building the application takes more than a few seconds.  To my surprise, I notice any changes made to the application or library, Mac OS X takes significantly longer time to compile the application.
I wonder if this is a known issue on Mac OS X Lion, or if there is anyway to improve Flex compiler performance on Mac.
Tangent

Yes, I have EXACTLY the same problem - except that my project is much larger and FB on Lion never gets to finish!
Going back to Snow Leopard would be a big bind - anyone in adobe care to shed some light on this?

The new AIR 3.3 will bring "Improved Mac App Store Support": http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashplatformruntimes/air3-3/
But I have 2 questions:
In what way will have be the improvement ? What do different from the past in this aspect ?
Will be (and when) a new Flash Builder version in the configuration of the Mac App Store certificate to deploy AIR apps for the Mac Store ?
As I can see from here: http://pigsels.com/2012/04/air-app-store-publishing-guide there is a lot of procedures to make that a new Flash Builder could automate/make the developer life easier and what will be different from the guide in the new AIR 3.3 from the AIR 3.2 about the App Store ?

Hi.  I'm running Mac OS X Lion.
FB 4.6 won't launch.  I read a post to rename the workspace directory but I don't know where this is located on my MacBook Pro.  Can anyone help me troubleshoot this?  If I rename the workspace directory hopefully it will launch, once I'm able to locate that folder.

sss999sss, Dezoris, ypeng, GJam564: Can you guys reproduce the issue still?
When you can, please comment on this bug http://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-25594 and attach your error log from your workspace
Win: C:\users\you\Adobe Flash Builder 4 Plug-in\.metadata\.log
Mac: /Users/you/Documents/Adobe Flash Builder 4 Plug-in/.metadata/.log
It would be helpful to know if this is limited to a particular MXML file or if it also reproduces in an empty Application.
Also, just to be sure, try to reproduce this bug a new workspace:
1) File > Switch Workspace > Other...
2) Specify a new folder
We'll continue to follow up on FB-25594. Again, please post your log and platform (mac/win, memory, etc.) information on the bug.

• Flash Builder 4.5 with Firefox - crashes and no performance data.  How to fix?

I am an experienced Flex developer, but new to the Flash Builder 4.5 Profiler.  I'm using Firefox 5.0 and Shockwave Flash 10.2.153.1.  Windows XP.
I have several problems:
1) in the profile view during a run, the buttons are dimmed and therefore I cannot "Capture Performance Profile".
2) almost every time I run, the Flash Player in Firefox crashes (And now worse, using that same profile, Firefox crashes randomly, but quickly on ANY web pages.  I smell a re-install of Firefox coming.)
3) there is the option to configure for the Standalone Flash Player and a browser.  How do I say WHICH one to use for a given profile run?
If I configure the browser to be IE, Firefox runs anyway.
Any ideas?  Suggestions?  Thanks for the time.

I have solved the crash by reinstalling the latest Flash Player.
The configuration issue is not as important.
The solution was simple.  In the "Profile" view, select the "[Running]" instance.  This enables the important buttons, like "Capture".
This causes a "Performance Profile" line to appear, linked to the running instance.  Double click to view the info.
Thanks for listening.

• How to optimize text editing performance in Flash Builder 4?

I am running Flash Builder 4.0.0 (build 272416) on a Macbook Pro 2.4 Ghz with 4Gb RAM. I am experiencing extremely poor performance while simply editing moderately complex MXML files.
By poor performance I mean noticeable lag between keystrokes. Type one char, wait 2 or 3 seconds on a 700 lines MXML with about 20 buttons, 2 AdvancedDataGrids, 1 text area. Fairly complex, but that's what I need.
Opening said MXML file takes around 12 seconds.
Saving said MXML results in around 8 seconds: no automatic building, nothing else being done.
On trivial MXMLs there's still a noticeable lag while typing, around 0.5 seconds per char.
At this point Flash Builder 4 is unusable for me: editing .as files is still decent, but for MXMLs is almost impossible to work with, as you can see from the numbers above.
Is there *anything* I can do to improve text editing performance? I've disabled all sort of niceties (automatic completion, indentation and so on) in the prefs, sadly to no avail. This is a major inconvenience for us.

You understood correctly:
- I removed all Build Path > Source Paths
- I moved those paths over to Library Paths > Source attachment
I took inspiration by how the Flex SDK is added to the project. Flex and flex related frameworks (e.g. datavisualization lib)  also specify a Source Attachment under Lib Path. If I remove the source attachment I am not able to drill down into Flex code when I want to by Command-clicking on a class name (or hitting F3).
All my SWC are open source. BTW some of the source paths I was using were the path to the Flex code and to datavisualtization lib, which I think are the biggest library I am linking against. So maybe to recreate, just add those 2 libraries and make sure to add the source path AND source attachment.
I am using RSLs for every library if that matters.
I don't understand why specifying a Source Attachment would cause any issues...  the swc is in sync with the source specified in its source attachment.

• Flash Builder 4.7 interrupts while working

Hi all.
First, I expect more from Flash Builder 4.7 (x64) - to work much faster instead of FB 4.6, but It seems that it's not like that.
Probably FB 4.6 and FB 4.7 works same in some way, but I like the fact that I can make a release build for iOS on my x64 Windows machine.
(which wasn't possible to make release build of big project, with FB 4.6 installed on x64 Windows)
However, my concern now is that FB 4.7 works great, but after some period of working FB 4.7 begin to interrupts. It is not freezing completly, but it interrupts on each (for example) 5 sec.
This is happening all the time when I open and close big .mxml and .as files (with big, I mean files that contains 2000 lines of code).
My scenario is... I found something wrong in UI or AS, then I need to open that "big" file, do the changes on 2-3 lines, and save it.
I also need to do that on next 20 "big" files.
I know that "Build Automatically" is causing this, but I need to know if there are some other optios where I can increase workflow for FB 4.7... maybe using more RAM or so...
I have i5 3.2 GHz processor with 16 GB of RAM... so I have open only FB 4.7 and Firefox when I work (and my memory is clean).
Thank you all for your investigation on this.

If only Adobe would respond... Here is my response to a related discussion: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1166350
It appears that Flash Builder 4.7 has memory leaks.  FB 4.7 freezes when the (used) heap memory reaches the maximum heap size.
I ended up tweaking my heap values (FlashBuilder.ini) to allow the application to grow insanely large (-Xmx2048m) to allow the application to run longer before running into the same problem (before restarting FB).
Until Adobe fixes this issue, if you have the available memory, try increasing the (-Xmx) setting in your FlashBuilder.ini file.

• Flash Builder 4.7 Freezing

Out of curiosity does anyone else have problems with Flash Builder 4.7 freezing while building? I will save a file and it generally seems to freeze on 3% or 27% (those numbers might be related to my project, obviously). This happens several times each day. I have to force it to close and relaunch. Not a big deal since I don't lose any code but it's just more of an annoyance because it interrupts my workflow and the tabs I had open don't save.

• Flash Builder 4.7 refactoring is broken

I'm unable to rename methods or classes in Flash Builder 4.7. Attempting to refactor gives this error:
"An unexpected exception occurred while performing the refactoring. See the error log for more details."
This happens in all my projects. I've recreated my workspace from scratch and the error persists.
I recently overlaid the AIR 3.6 SDK in Flash Builder. I tried reverting to AIR 3.5, which I'd backed up, but that did not fix the problem either.

• Queries regarding Flash Builder and Augmented Reality.

I am Sarat from India. I'm a software engineer with working knowledge of Java, so Flash AS and OOP are understandable for me. I am working on an augmented reality project. I am quite new to Flash, Adobe Community and I've got some queries regarding Augmented Reality and Flash Builder:
1. Flash Builder 4.6 comes with a default Flex 4.6 SDK. However, Flex 4.6 SDK wasn't allowing me to compile and run some example files. So I've downloaded Flex 4.0A version from Adobe.com. Now the examples are running fine, but would there be any problem if i try deploying such projects in a website or as a desktop app? Once the code is compiled into a swf file, the flex framework used doesn't make much difference, does it?
2. Would the AR project run effectively on a website, given various internet/processor speeds worldwide? Would the effectiveness of the AR project, deployed on a website, depend on the number of triangles in the 3D models i.e. dae files? Because as per my understanding heavy models implies more time to download the flash app into the local browser from the internet and more time to render them by the papervision 3D engine right?
3. Can we develop a stand alone desktop AR app using Flash Builder? Using Adobe AIR we can, i guess. Please refer some tutorial, if possible.
4. I've seen that we can implement multiple-marker-tracking AR using vectors/arrays in AS. Would there be any performance issues depending on the size of the vectors/arrays used.
5. Can someone please mention some tips to improve performance of an AR app (desktop app and web app)?
6. What would be, approximately, the cost of FLARManager, FLARToolkit commercial versions, if you have any idea? I've gone through their website but they did not mention the costs.
7. Would applying bitmap material to the dae models pull down the web app/mobile app/desktop app performance, given some 4 to 5 dae models in the scene?
8. Is it advisable to use multiple markers with multiple dae models or single marker with Flash-based GUI option to load different models onto the same marker?
It would be very helpful for me if someone could answer my above queries.
Sarat.

#1, If it compiles then you have no issue. There's no reason at this point not to use 4.6. You should bundle a captive runtime to assure the users computer won't need to have AIR installed at all.
#2, Papervision is old. Use the Stage3D and/or a wrapper framework. As far as the generic "If I download lots of data will it take the user more time to load it", well, of course. Just don't make the loading experience painful. Entertain them while they way or find ways of displaying data sooner than later. If it's desirable on the web has more to do with the context of the app and the device displaying it. In other words, a phone user would find it easy but obviously not a desktop user.
#3, Definitely referring you to Google on that one.
#4, Size always matters, it's common sense. The more you process the harder it is. While I haven't done AR I've used the Microsoft Kinect SDK and ANE and tracking was extremely fast but limited. From what I've seen and your basic built in location and direction hardware on any mobile device you shouldn't have much trouble. Depends on what you're doing.
#5, This discussion would be way too large for a forum. You'd need to consult a firm experienced in AR development.
#6, "Applications using the commercial license do not have to provide source code, but must pay a licensing fee. Contact ARToolworks at [email protected] for more information." They will base your price on your product, there is no single price.
#7, The models could be huge and elaborate or tiny and simple which changes the answer. Consult the answer in #4. Ultimately most people are getting on fast networks with mobile and excessively fast on desktop/wifi. Size matters a lot less than 3 years ago.
#8, Depends on what you're doing. You have to explain it.

• Enhanced Flash Builder Code Generation Functionality

For voting in JIRA:
https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/FB-27169
The code generation feature FB 4 currently has is only really useful for quick throwaway prototyping or very simple forms. The generation should allow you to configure formatting via default templates, AND optionally utilize a dialog box (similar to that used in refactoring but with a few extras) so that you can configure the contents of each generated function and provide appropriate function names according to coding best practices. For example:
-User initiates event handler generation
(Optional, if Codegen dialog is enabled)
-User is prompted with a dialog that allows them to customize the generated function name, and possibly specify whether they need an Event parameter passed to the function. (Default to NO event parameter, but this could be a pre-configured user option.)
-FB utilizes the customized code generation format (customizable by the developer) to generate the new function
If you need a "submitForm()" function and you want both a TextInput's enter action and a button's click action to call it, currently you're better off typing it all yourself, because auto-generation is going to put this long-named function that assumes you need 'event' passed to it. An event:MouseEvent parameter just gets in the way when you also want a TextInput's enter event to call that function, for example. Or perhaps we want to provide a more descriptive name to each handler (via dialog) without assigning IDs to each and every component: "datagrid1_changeHandler" or "button1_changeHandler" doesn't tell us what the function actually does. It's a basic coding best practice to name functions or methods after the actions they actually perform, and in a large application with complex forms auto-generated generic sounding function names are essentially useless from a maintainability standpoint.

For anyone interested, I figured it out:
to generate a CFC, you have to right-click a table in the RDS Dataview, then you can generate a CFC. You cannot generate a CFC from an AS class as described in the CF Builder help within Flash Builder.
Adobe: it would be nice if this got fixed – and if someone there replied to posts like this. You do  know all this, don‘t you?

• Flash Builder 4.5 messing up my released iPad app

Using Burrito and coding exclusively in AS3 (no Flex), I built and released an iPad app in the App Store.  When I recompile that code using Flash Builder 4.5, I encounter a number of problems:
- at first the size of my app appears about 50% its usual size, and is slightly off the screen in both the x and y directions.  Once I rotate the iPad, everything restores to normal.
- text is sporadically resizing down.  Elements that are created usiung the same method and have explicit font sizes, sometimes appear about 50% their normal size.  This may be related to the previous problem because I feel like it only happens in the beginning, and as new text comes onto the screen it is consistently the correct size.  But it is strange that some elements are small and others are big.
I would like to make updates to my released app, but I cannot because of these issues.  I seem to be using AIR 2.6.
Anyone have any suggestions how to fix these problems?
Thanks,
Adrian

After testing with a fresh project and working backwards, I have isolated the problem--setting the renderMode in the descriptor file to gpu (or maybe to anything) causes weird sizing issues at launch, even with a simple embedded bitmap image.  Once I commented out that line, the problem went away.  Luckily, my app seems to be performing just fine without that line, presumably running in auto.

• Flash Builder 4 Premium reverts to trial version for SDK 4.5.1.

My setup:
Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.6
Flash Builder 4 Premium, Version 4.0 (build 272416), volume license
SDK 4.5.1, Flex 3 compatibility mode enabled
RIATest 4.3 Professional
RIATest compiled-in agent: RIATestAgent3.swc
When running RIATest against our application to perform automated tests, I eventually get this alert appearing in  our application:

----------------------------------------------------------------

License not present. With the trial version only limited
    replays are allowed.

                            [  OK  ]
This alert never appeared until we upgraded from SDK 3.4.1 to SDK 4.5.1. This problem occurs on Windows 7 and Mac OS X. I updated our code to disable Flex 3 compatibility and use the RIATest agent, RIATestAgent4.swc. This did not change the outcome. Since this is an Adobe licensing issue, there is nothing the makers of RIATest (Cogitek) can do to help me other than to tell me to press the matter with Adobe. I'm using the same legitimate/legal/valid Flash Builder Premium and RIATest licenses as I've been using for a year now.
Why do I need a new license to perform automated tests against SDK 4.5.1? What license would that be?

In order for you to downgrade you need to hava an AVL license, and yes it is possible, you just need to call support.
http://www.adobe.com/volume-licensing/policies.html
Check Backward licensing policy
"Adobe allows program members to order a current-version license but use a prior version. These members can contact Adobe Customer Service to request a serial number for the earlier version if they do not already have one. Prior-version software is available via ESD and can be purchased through standard resellers. The program member must follow all guidelines of the current-version EULA.
Note: This policy is applicable under the TLP and Forms Licensing Program (FLP) as well."
Hope it helps!

• Flash Builder 4.5 Hangs When Loading Large Projects

I recently upgraded from Flash Builder 4.0 to Flash builder 4.5.  I am running the 32 bit version of Eclipse Helios on windows 7, 64 bit.  I have installed the latest 32 bit Java build, jdk1.6.0_25
Smaller projects and libraries appear to build and run fine.  However when I attempt to load my main application, which is quite large, Eclipse Hangs for several minutes.  Occasionally it will return after some time, but as soon as I move the mouse cursor again it hangs again.  The last attempt had 1.8 Gigs of memory allocated to the eclipse process before I killed it.
Some other things I have noticed.
*) 4.5 does appear to be more sluggish for me generally than 4.0 for the demo apps I have built to test weather or not the install is working
*) If I do not attempt to actually open any files, I am able to clean the project and have it produce an executable
*) I have "build automatically" turned off, the problem does not seem to be initiated by the build. The problem seems to be something to do with loading large mxml files or files which include large mxml files.
*) The log files only complain about Eclipse being closed improperly (from me killing it aftter a prolonged hang) and about a collision with the ctrl+shift+G key combination
*) I have reverted to the original 4.0 plugin and the project still builds fine
*) Opening the stand alone flash builder 4.5 and pointing it at the same projects that work in 4.0 yields the same hanging symptoms as the 4.5 plugin version
*) I have juiced up my Eclipse memory settings and confirmed that they work quite well for my 4.0 build.  My Eclipse.ini looks like:
-showsplash
org.eclipse.platform
--launcher.XXMaxPermSize
256m
-startup
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.1.0.v20100507.jar
--launcher.library
plugins/org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.win32.win32.x86_1.1.1.R36x_v20100810
-product
org.eclipse.epp.package.java.product
--launcher.defaultAction
openFile
--launcher.defaultAction
openFile
-vm
c:/Program Files (x86)/Java/jdk1.6.0_25/bin/javaw.exe
-vmargs
-Dosgi.requiredJavaVersion=1.5
-Xms1024m
-Xmx1024m
-XX:PermSize=256m
-XX:MaxPermSize=256m
I am really interested in several of of the new 4.5 features.  Any comments / suggestions welcome.  I am out of ways I know how to trouble shoot this short of rebuilding my app up from scratch by adding components one at a time, which would take a very long time.
If it would be at all helpful, I would be happy to drop by the San Francisco office with my laptop to trouble-shoot this
-Chris.

When I run the application in the memory profiler under FB 4.0 it takes
about 80MB of RAM peak.
I can not get the app to launch out of FB 4.5.
I have reproduced this issue on two different machines running only Eclipse
both stand alone and the plugin versions.
My machine has 4GB of RAM, my typical usage is less than 2GB.
Right now with FB 4.0 I am working on the problem project and a few sample
projects and Eclipse is consuming about 600MB which seems normal to me.
The confusing thing for me is that everything works fine and is responsive
with FB 4.0 and the issue does not seem to be actually compiling the
application, rather it has something to do with how FB is parsing my source
code that causes the hang.  Almost like somehow a circular dependency check
that used to work is now failing or something like that.
I am not sure how to find out what FB 4.5 is hanging on precisely.  I can only
see that the logs look normal and memory usage climbs out of sight while it
is hanging.
-Chris

• Launching Flash Builder 4 Help takes 20 secs (ACH or browser)

We have 5 flex developers on our team who are all running into the same issue with the dynamic help:
1) Hit F1 (display help section)
2) Select a class (ArrayList for example)
3) Click on the Related API (mx.collections.ArrayList) in the help section.
4) It then take 15-20 seconds for the page to display in Adobe Community Help which is already running.
5) If I switch the preferences to 'Open Help in Browser' it take the same amount of time for the webpage to open.
There's no CPU load during this waiting time. This is really hitting our productivity.
Any ideas?

Hi: have you guys downloaded the local help for Flash Builder yet?  That should actually boost performance, even for online search/browsing.  Here's why:  when you download the local Help content, the Help system also downloads an intermediary XML file that we use to resolve context-sensitivity and a few other functions. Having this file cached locally should improve launch times for both the AIR app and the browser.
To be sure, open up the Community Help AIR app and check Preferences:
Windows: CTRL+ K  or check under the Edit menu
Mac:  Cmd + comma or check under Adobe Help > Preferences
Then click on the Local Content tab -- you should see the various package titles available for download with a status message (pending download, current, etc.).
We are working on an update so that we can deliver the intermediary XML file by default when a user opens the app, instead of delivering it via the content download.  That fix should be coming out soon.
