Smart applications not always so smart
Hi.
Most of us are becoming well aquainted with, and even to the point of depending upon, "smart" devices and "smart" programs for our daily activities and business dealings.
And, these smart devices and smart programs have made a big difference in our lives.
However, I've come to realize that many times, these smart devices or smart programs are anything but smart. In fact, they have begun to become rather aggravating, to say the least - doing more or less what they seem to want, not what we essentially ask for.
My latest experience along this line is my experience with Safari operations on my macbook pro.
For the longest time, I've not used Safari as my browser. I had used firefox for the longest time. Then, when having some issues with firefox operation (sometimes becoming sluggish in response time, etc.), I opted to delete firefox from my computer entirely, and returned to using safari.
Now, I'm located geographically in Saudi Arabia, but as English is my mother tongue, and the vast majority of my internet (and other computer) work is in English, I prefer my browser and search engine to be in basic English mode. There is every once in a while I may search for something in particular in Arabic, but when I do, I simply switch over in the language field, and do the search in that language. But in general, I have all of my settings on English, and prefer my browser and search engine mode in deafult set to English.
When I changed over to Safari, for some reason, even though I've gone back countless times into the settings pane to make sure, the browser default mode as well as the search engine mode comes up automatically in Arabic style, and presents to me selections of Arabic, even though I've typed in my search in English. This is the smart aspect of Safari, picking up that I'm in Saudi Arabia, and selecting this mode for me, on my behalf, even thought my settings are set to preference of English, not Arabic.
In addition, Safari is insisting on giving me the default search enging of Genio, even thought I've already deleted it complete from my system, and have gone through all proper and necessary steps of completed shutting down and restarting, and then also resetting Safari to factory settings...still it is giving me Genio as default search engine, even though I've consistently returned to Safari preferences settings, and ensured the Google search engine is selected as default search engine (Genio is not even on the list of possible search engines to choose from).
Hence, I've gone (once again) to the extent of re-downloading the latest version of Firefox, and of course selected my choice search engine to set as default, and now, finally, I have appearing in my window, complete English mode and selections when I type in a search in English...only reverting to Arabic mode when I type in a search in Arabic.
Ah...the benefits and troubles of modern technology...hence 'smart' devices and 'smart' applications which are, as I've come to learn, not really so 'smart', afterall.

Xmonad Question on Floating Applications not always on top
Hey,
I'm switching from Awesome to Xmonad (or, trying to at least) since I'm growing tired of trying to keep up with syntax changes with awesome updates (but still waiting for the numlock on + no keybindings bug to be fixed, so I can't disable updates for it entirely). Everything is going fairly well, and the only issue I think I need to ask about (the rest is documented well, or already answered), is the fact that Xmonad seems to automatically place any floating windows above others. This is all fine if you move it to it's own screen, but I generally keep Skype open on the active window, and I want it to lose focus while I'm working on other things, without putting everything else into floating mode as well. I was wondering if it's an issue with my template xmonad.hs (off the wiki page, if I remember correctly, or else from the Xmonad thread on these forums), or if it's a default that can be changed (or can't be changed, for that matter). Does anyone have it working so that floating windows just float and can be hidding by tiled windows?
This is the template xmonad.hs I'm using (and will be editing properly if I get this issue sorted out):

Well, I think it would be under the same behaviour, depending on the layout you're using when that happens. If you're using IM, floating windows (I believe) appear below the others. Besides that, it's probably not the same issue and you should start a new thread (using a descriptive title describing the issue) (to ensure that people who may have a solution will read the thread, chances are if the title makes someone seem like they can't answer it, they won't always read it), and/or search the forums for anything similar.

Lately, I've been getting a blue screen in the midst of working and have to do a cold reboot to end it. Seems to happen when I'm closing windows or quitting applications. Not always, but sporadically. What causes this? I'm using 10.6.8 on early 2011 MBP. Thanks for any help/advice!
You have 10.6 on that machine, I suggest you stick with it for performance, third party hardware and software reasons as long as possible.
Consider 10.8 (not 10.7) when it's released, because 10.7 and 10.8 will require a new investment in software and newer third party hardware as it requires newer drivers the old machines won't have. (forced upgrade because of software, really nice of them)

Far as your Safari problem do these things until it's resolved:
1: Software Update fully under the Apple menu.
2: Check the status of your plug-ins and update (works for all browsers) also install Firefox and see if your problems continue. You should always have at least two browsers on the machine just in case one fails.

Flash install instructions/problem resolution here if you need it.

My original note application is always crashed and i can't open it. Can you help me please??? Urgent
CLOSE FROZEN APPS
Hold the sleep button until ON/OFF slider appears. Let go of sleep button and ignore slider and then hold home button until the app closes
Then do this
RESET DEVICE
Hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the home button together until the apple logo appears (ignore the ON/OFF slider) then let both buttons go and wait for device to restart (no data will be lost). -
Safari 5.1.7 local storage not always clearing upon reset
There are several threads through out this forum regarding cookies being accepted regardless of settings, but much of those seem to be fixed by one of the recent security updates (seperate from an actual Safari update), including fixed for me. But, have noticed that "local storage" items do not always clear out upon a reset of safari (all boxes checked). In fact, sometimes, it takes two or three resets to completely clear them out. I have verified this behavior on several mac's running SL each yeilding the same. I just wondered if anyone else has seen this, or has found a solution (or if this is expected behavoiur). Does this indicate a security threat within the browser? I have used the feedback to Apple to report this.
I did find this explanation, however:
https://developer.apple.com/library/safari/#documentation/iphone/conceptual/safa rijsdatabaseguide/Name-ValueStorage/Name-ValueStorage.htmlBDAqua,
Nope. It's very erratic. For example, just now I cycled several times between the inbox and the smart mailbox and even closed and re-opened. The inbox showed messages. Then I quit mail and re-opened, the inbox was empty. It took a couple more cycles of quit and re-open to get an inbox display. But as soon as I got it back on, and then closed or changed mailboxes, it disappeared when I went back to the inbox.
Hellofa way to run a railroad.
And just for reference, when I first had this issue last week under 10.6.8, I read several posts on this forum wherein other users had problems with the inbox display. Other than the smart mailbox "fix", I never did find a definitive solution or explanation as to why it is occuring.

Application Not Responding with 10.9.3 Upgrade
I have upgraded my software to 10.9.3 and now I am having serious issues with all of my applications just freezing up with all of the applications saying Application Not Responding. I am using a iMac 2.8 GHz core, 4G Memory, 800 Mhz. I have as much additional memory installed as I can.
Thanks,
KariTry these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:
1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the
COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the
computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager
screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
4. Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
Reinstall the 10.9.3 update: OS X Mavericks 10.9.3 Update (Combo).
If 4 GBs of RAM is your computer's maximum, then you really should not be running Mavericks. Your best choice for such an older machine would be Snow Leopard. -
Web Intelligence is not always working well
i found web intelligence is not always working, sometime, when i try to open a document, it takes so long, sometimes, it is fast, sometimes when i try to refresh the report, it gives me error, i am wondering if someone knows what could cause this kind of issue? is it proxy? or something else?
Tara,
there are many factors that can cause slow performance. In those cases where it is sometimes fast, it may be due to caching -- another user recently requested the same report and the report is in the server's cache, so instead of running the report from the start it sends the cache to you. In other cases there may be no cache built up so you get stuck waiting for cache and your report comes up slowly. There are a couple of techniques for tracking down slow performance, but mostly it happens due to either a database problem or an overworked applications/web server, or poor communication/LAN/Network lines. Depending on your expertise you'll gravitate to checking that aspect out first and investigating one of the aspects to see where a bottleneck is getting produced. Another technique is to add -trace to your service startups to add more verbose messages to your logs. Adding trace will help you to see more of what is going on in the background. I guess it's a matter of digging in and following your instincts until you can nail down the culprit.
Thanks,

The PDF output is not always displayed!
Hello
I'm tryin' to build some PDF outputs and I have the next problem: I have 20 reports to make it on PDF form (viewed with the Acrobat plugin from IE 5.5 or higher) and when I try to see what was builded the PDF it's not always displayed ( mean it's not readed by the plugin). I generate the PDF output from a servlet (which also set the servlet output context as 'application/pdf') and, if the output it's generated too fast (meanning the report information was too small), the Acrobat plugin doesn't catch him ! I think that I have to slow down the servlet response to allow the plugin complete loading, but I don't khow how to do this (and, ofcourse, if it's possible).
Please, I need a solution. !

Microsoft Word Freezing Repeatedly, Application Not Responding
Just wondering if anyone else was having issues with Microsoft Word from MS Office 2008, where you open the application, you type a few sentences, and the application freezes with the spinning circle of death that won't go away until you click the dock where it says "application not responding" and do a force-quit? You can leave the circle spinning for 10-20-30 minutes, and it never goes away.
Now for the weird part--this error only happens for me when I'm using a specific document on my computer. I can open Word, start a new document, type several paragraphs of text, and it works fine. But I've been working on an existing paper for about two months that all of a sudden started causing these freezes/crashes when editing it. It's about 30 pages roughly, no images, no big inserts that would take up a lot of memory (116 kb in size). And up until today, there were no problems. So why all of a sudden can't I edit anything on this paper without freezing the program?! I downloaded the Microsoft Office 2008 Service Pack 1 that was just released after this problem started, and ran all the recent Java and program updates through Software Update with computer restarts. I even copied the text from the Word document I was working on, pasted it into a new document, tried saving it as both .doc and .docx, and again the program still freezes when working with that text in a new file. This one baffles me. It's like the text within a document is somehow freezing the application. One thing I did notice is that the freezes seem to happen when I'm scrolling using a mouse wheel. Not always, but quite a bit. I suppose this is some memory issue related to several pages of text that the program can't render or process when you add new lines of text or scroll, but again, I can't figure why this paper I've been working on for months all of a sudden decided to start freezing Word today. Can you really only have 30 double-spaced pages of text in Word before it crashes?
Looks like I've found my reason to switch to Open Office, since I'm 3-4 days out from a deadline. Any other solution strategies would be welcome. Thanks.Same problem here - Microsoft Word 2008 (update 12.1.7) will open fine, and then start the spinning pizza of death. Only way out is to force-quit the app. I've tried:
1) deleting plist and font cache files
2) uninstalling MS Office 2008, reinstalling and then re-applying updates 12.1.0 and 12.1.7
3) confirming that Apple's Font Card.app can verify all fonts
No luck. Currently I can't open any MS word doc without the spinning pizza of death.
If you are lucky enough that these symptoms only happen with a specific Word .doc file, I would see if the PC-originator could re-save the file as .RTF and resend. If you can then open it OK, you could revert back to .doc (or .docx) format. RTF format is Microsoft's interchange format. If there are anomalies in the .doc file, saving as .RTF can sometimes clean them up. Once done, you can revert back to native MS Word format.

BUG: KEYBOARD SHORTCUT KEYS DO NOT ALWAYS ACTIVATE A SERVICE (A WORKFLOW)
BUG: KEYBOARD SHORTCUT KEYS DO NOT ALWAYS ACTIVATE A SERVICE (A WORKFLOW)
When you assign a keyboard shortcut to a Service (such as a Service Workflow created in Automator) using the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts, if that shortcut key combination includes the Command key, pressing that shortcut will always successfully activate the Service. No problem there.
However, shortcut key combinations that do not include the Command key (for example, the shortcut key combo Ctrl-Shift-D) WILL NOT activate the Service in any newly opened application, until you click on the Services Menu option in that application.
As soon as you click on the application's Services Menu, this seems to bind the shortcut key combo to the Service, and thereafter, that keyboard shortcut will activate the Service in that particular app. But if you then quit and reopen the app, you'll find the Service will once again lose its binding to the shortcut key combination and will thus fail to work again.
This means that shortcut key combinations such as Ctrl-D, Ctrl-Shift-D, F15, Alt-F15, etc are not really viable shortcuts for Services, because they will not work in any newly-opened application until you click on the Services Menu in that application.
This bug thus greatly limits the shortcuts that you can employ for Services, because you can only reliably use shortcut key combos that contain the Command key. This is a fault that Apple really needs to fix. This is a very old glitch: I notice it is present in Snow Leopard 10.6.8, as well as Yosemite 10.10.1.
This bug does not apply to application shortcuts, however, or to other shortcuts in the Shortcuts Preference Pane, just to Services shortcuts (including the Mac's default Services, or any Services you make yourself using Workflows on the Automator software).
To give some examples:
The following keyboard shortcuts for Services WILL NOT work until you click on the Services Menu in the application you are using (and they will cease working again when you quit and reopen the app):
Ctrl-X
Ctrl-Shift-X
Ctrl-Alt-X
Ctrl-Alt-Shift-X
Alt-X
Alt-Shift-X
F1, F2, F3, etc
So until Apple fixes this bug, the above type of key combinations, that do not contain the Command key, are best avoided as shortcuts for Services. It is particularly unfortunate that function keys F1 to F19 do not work reliably, as these would make great single-key shortcuts to Services.
However, the following sort of keyboard shortcuts for Services, all containing the Command key, once set up will always work without fail:
Command-Alt-X
Command-Ctrl-X
Command-Shift-X
Command-Ctrl-Shift-X
Command-Alt-Ctrl-Shift-X
Command-F1, Command-F2, Command-F3, etc
So all the above can be reliably used as shortcuts to Services.
Here X denotes keyboard keys such as A, B, C, 1, 2, 3, =, \, [, etc.
Note that even for keyboard shortcuts containing the Command key, you may very occasionally need to click the Services Menu to get them to work initially in an application (notably in the System Preferences application itself). But if this is necessary, it is just required once when they are first set up, and thereafter the shortcuts containing the Command key will always work without fail.
The above was tested on Yosemite 10.10.1, but most likely applies to other versions of OS X as well, as I believe this bug is an old one. This bug is definitely present in Snow Leopard 10.6.8, because I have observed this same fault in an old Mac I have that runs Snow Leopard.
I have reported this bug to Apple, so hopefully they will see my report and act upon it. However, it might be an idea if others also report this problem of Services shortcuts not working property, to ensure that Apple get the message. You can report a bug to Apple via their bug feedback page here.Exactly where do you want to use a GO BACK "shortcut" in Bridge? Maybe I don't even understand what you mean by Go Back. Bridge is only a file browser, nothing more. It doesn't open, edit, manipulate or save files at all.
Are you simply referring to going back to view a folder that you viewed before?
Please don't take this a criticism. As someone who will gladly pay money not to have to learn any shortcuts at all, I'm just puzzled and curious, that's all. -

Does this only open on that specific site?
In any case, you may want to:
- instruct Firefox to handle PDF files in a specific way by going into Tools > Options > Applications and selecting the option you want for the PDF files
- reinstall Adobe Reader and its Firefox plugin
- install another reader instead of Adobe Reader. I recommend Foxit Reader ( http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/reader/ ), since it's free, VERY light, VERY fast, safe and also has a Firefox plugin (make sure you don't have both Adobe Reader plugin and Foxit Reader plugin enabled/installed at the same time in Firefox) -
Oracle 10g form not always running in windows 7
hello all of you experts , the query which I am going to post here is very annoying for me but it there might be a simple solution to my problem. I have installed oracle developer 10g on windows 7. Changed the formsweb.cfg file so that it uses java plug in rather than jinitiator I have installed the JRE version 6, now the problem is that when i try to run a form sometimes it runs properly but sometimes the browser window becomes blank and the form is not visible in it and yes the splash screen which shows the name of application server stays there on the screen. the problem is in internet explorer, mozilla and chrome as well didn't check on any other browser. Please help me out i would be grateful to you guys out there. Just to let you know that this annoying behavior is not always there, i dont know why some forms do run properly but some of them dont.
That is actually not an uncommon symptom for any Windows platform. However, I will say that if you are running on Windows 7, it should be Win7-32bit and you should have installed the 10.1.2.3 patch set. Anything else would not be considered certified by Oracle and therefore not supported. The details on how to properly install Forms/Reports 10.1.2 on Win7 are outlined in MyOracleSupport note 1292919.1
Assuming you covered all that, with Dev Suite this often happens when you have abandoned a process previously then tried to start another before the first has been terminated. In other words, next time you have this happen close ALL open browser windows then open the Windows task manager. Look for any orphaned frmweb.exe processes and kill them. Now go back and try starting a form. It should work now.
It is never a good idea to terminate a running form by closing the browser. It is important that you close the form first (e.g. using the Exit button in the form) then close the browser. Closing the browser while a form is running can cause runtime processes to become orphaned. Generally these will be cleaned up when FORMS_TIMEOUT is reached (usually 15 minutes), but the point is that you have prevented a clean shutdown from occurring. So always make a best effort attempt at closing the form properly. End-users should be encouraged to do the same when the application is put into production. -
Applications not opening with the exception of iTunes and Safari
Hi I have an IMac operating OS X Yosemite, Shortly after install I have been unable to open any applications with the exception of ITunes. I am also able to open Safari.
I have transferred all of my files using time machine to my external hard drive, now I am wondering whether I need to restore my Mac back to factory settings?
I have rebooted in safe mode and the system operates no different.
I have also reinstalled Yosemite operating system, updated iTunes and am wondering if I haven't updated something I perhaps should have earlier or if I have a virus or trojan?

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
The test works on OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later. I don't recommend running it on older versions of OS X. It will do no harm, but it won't do much good either.
Don't be put off by the complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can act on it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of it have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message. See, for example, this discussion.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
5. Try to test under conditions that reproduce the problem, as far as possible. For example, if the computer is sometimes, but not always, slow, run the test during a slowdown.
You may have started up in "safe" mode. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, just press return three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, a series of lines will appear in the Terminal window like this:
[Process started]
Part 1 of 8 done at … sec
Part 8 of 8 done at … sec
The test results are on the Clipboard.
Please close this window.
[Process completed]
The intervals between parts won't be exactly equal, but they give a rough indication of progress. The total number of parts may be different from what's shown here.
Wait for the final message "Process completed" to appear. If you don't see it within about ten minutes, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, press the key combination control-C or command-period to stop it and go to the next step. You'll have incomplete results, but still something.
12. When the test is complete, or if you stopped it because it was taking too long, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak for themselves, not for me. The test itself is harmless, but whatever else you're told to do may not be. For others who choose to run it, I don't recommend that you post the test results on this website unless I asked you to.

Application Not Responding Creative Suite
Having major problems with Application Not Responding in Creative Suites 5 & 6. Whenever trying to quit applications, more than not have to force quit. Would like to be able to quit out of Adobe Apps without force quitting. Also get a lot of spinning wheel of death, that forces us to force quit and restart. Any help would be appreciated.
What system? This behavior has nothing to do with the programs per se, "crashes on exit" always depend on systemic issues. provide the necessary details and crash info:

WEBUTIL_FILE.FILE_OPEN_DIALOG do not always work
I'm trying to open a file with WEBUTIL_FILE.FILE_OPEN_DIALOG. The dialog shows but when I select a file, it does not alway open. I'd say it opens once out of 10 times. Also, it never opens a file if I double-click on it. I've also tried CLIENT_GET_FILE_NAME but with the same results.
Ensure that you are using Forms and WebUtil version 10.1.2.2 or newer and Jinit 1.3.1.28 or newer. If you are using the Sun JRE, I would recommend 1.5.0_15.
WebUtil 10.1.2.2 (or 10.1.2.3) can be obtained from a Developer Suite installation of the same version. For Application Server, simply copy the 10.1.2.2 (or 10.1.2.3) frmwebutil.jar file from Dev Suite to the Application Server home, replacing the old file.
