Smart Collections Not-so-smart?

I have recently started using smart collections to gather various pictures I have taken of works of art.  I have mutliple shots of the same art works, and I want to see all the shots at once in order to delete some and edit others.  There are several hundred files in the collection.  But each time I make any change to a file (edit or delete it), the entire collection must be re-built (perhaps just re-indexed, but, the panel goes blank it must be re-displayed).  This is time consuming and makes working my way through the collection practially impossible.  Is there something wrong, or is just the nature of smart collections?

Thanks Curt.
I have avoided the problem by copying all the files in my smart collection into a regular (not "smart") collection.
I was having problems with regular collections, but I eventually solved this problem.  (You responded to my post on this issue a couple of weeks back.)  Bridge would not remember all the items in a collection after re-starting.  All the files were listed in the collection filelist, but the collection would contain only those at the beginning of the list.  I discovered the solution by examining the files that caused the problem (i.e., if the collection contained only 57 items after re-starting Bridge, I examined the 58th file named in the filelist).  The problematic files all contained apostraphes (') or hyphens (-).  Bridge (and Photoshop) allows these characters in filenames, but the filelist is a straight DOS textfile, and so filenames with these characters caused Bridge to stop reading collections files from a filelist as soon at it came across such a character.  I used batch renaming to get rid of the offending characters, and now Bridge remembers all the files in my collections.
So, this solved my problem, but it is definitely a bug in the program that Bridge allows characters in filenames that other functions in the program can't recognize.

  • Creating smart collections using Import Smart Collection settings

Does anybody know if I can create smart collections using Import Smart collection settings? Where can I find any information on this other than Photo collections? In particular, I am interested in what to do with the ID.

I'll try to explain the best I can. I am trying to improve my workflow.
I have been a little lazy with my workflow, I don't rate by images for 2 reasons: 1) I haven't found a rating system I am comfortable with (we might have discussed this on another thread), and 2) I am not very good at critically assessing my own photo graphic work. This means I have very often jumped to the develop module to adjust an image without ever bother to rate them (almost 20% of my catalog).
I have also rated some images and never touched them.
So I have a need to find images I have rated and adjusted, images I have rated and not adjusted, and images I have adjusted and not rated.
Now, my photographers vision and knowledge have both changed substantially over the past 5 years. So to make the task more manageable I am trying to divide my catalog into 3 collections per year:
    1 - Rated and adjusted
2 - Rated and not adjusted
3 - Adjusted and not rated
The assumption is that this is the bit of the catalog worth looking at and re-organise first. I know that anything I edited last year would have been more proficiently edited that anything I edited in 2010.
    Does it make some sense?

  • Reading Advanced Metadata in Smart Collections, not working in Bridge CS6

In Bridge CS5 you could make an Smart collection that were looking for: All metadata > contains > "here we add a value from a metadata only visible from the Advanced tab in File info"
But this nolonger works in CS6.
Although I can go to File info and see the metadata value that are visible from Advanced. But the option All metadata, clearly doesn't support the advanced metadata in the file in CS6.
Could this be a bug in CS6?

If any one like to try this yourself and get same or other result, please let me know!
Otherwise this must be a bug to report to Adobe.
I don't have CS5 installed anymore but CS6 is still present while I use Bridge CC for my daily workflow (MacPro MacOSX 10.8.5).
I first copied 4 DNG files from my main folder to a subfolder. Those files I added a name to the IPTC extension persons name and saved.
Checked and this name shows in the IPTC extension persons name field in Metadata panel as well as in Advanced Tab in File Info IPTC Extended Properties / IPTC4xmpExt:PersonInImage(Bag container).
I closed the subfolder and used the smart collection icon to bring up the Find window.
I then selected All metadata and filled in the persons name, had subfolders and non indexed already included and put the source field to the main DNG folder.
The result was almost instant with the 4 files showing.
I then quitted Bridge CC and started Bridge CS6
Since I had not used this for a while and my main folder contained 4500 DNG I set the cache quality icon to embedded only. Selected the same folder and followed the same procedure as in CC.
Naturally it took a bit longer because the files needed to be indexed first, yet after this the result was still the same, the 4 DNG files with the persons name showed in the smart collection.
So on my behalf I can't reproduce your problem and for me it is not a bug also I'm afraid.

  • Smart Collection not letting me click Save

    Hello,
I have no smart collections or regular collections created.
I am trying to create a smart collection containing all the photographs with the keyword Goofy in them.
    1. I click "Create new smart collection"
    2. Look in: 'my photos' folder
    3. Criteria; select Keywords - contains - and type in Goofy
    4. In results, Match if any criteria are met and both check boxes stay selected.
    5. Click Save.
When I click save, nothing happens, the window stays open and it doesnt seem like it acknowledge my click.
    Suggestions?

    That is odd.
I don't know what influence startup scripts have but you might check and see if you have them checked in preferences/startup scripts.
Is this on an internal dirve?  If external may have permission problems.  Just as a test close Bridge, right click on Bridge icon and choose "run as administrator".
If that does not work I am out of bullets.  Might want to try reset preferences.  Hold down Ctrl key and start Bridge.  Should get a reset window with 3 options.

  • LR3 smart collection not updating

I shoot for a college and I have smart collection setup to show me my best shots for each sport. There are some images that won't appear in my smart collection and I can't figure out why. All the other sports collection work fine. This collection does show me some of the images, but not all based on my criteria. Yes, I've checked that the criteria is correct. Any ideas as to why this is happeneing? How can I fix this? is this a program error or bug?

    Thank you.
I don't see that you're doing anything wrong in the SC definition. That file should be selected.
There are a couple of things that you might try:
--Delete the SC and re-create it. I've seen cases where collections were working wierdly and re-doing them helped.
--Try filtering for those things in the Grid view. You can devote two or more columns to Keywords. If you select several keywords in the same column, you get an "or" relationship. Selecting keywords in different columns gives an "and" relationship. Assuming this works, you can click the double-headed arrow at the end of the filter bar and save the filter as a preset.

  • Smart collections not reading correct number of images inside

I have an issue with smart collections for the first time. I have just set up a new workflow with 4 stages and the number counter next to the collection is counting wrong despite the images being represented in the collection. For example if I click on the smart colection I can see 10 images inside but the counter reads 3. Does anybody have this experience?
I have optimised my cataloge, however I do have some 20,000 images inside... will this reduce the ability of LR to keep up to running speed with such smart collection operations, giving incorrect readings.
What are best practices for image numbers and the arguement for running multiple cats. I've just tried in a fresh catalogue and the results were perfect. Is this an inherent limitation of Lightroom? I was under the impression that I could manage my whole archive and current projects under one roof, as it were.
    Thanks,
    Graeme

I suppose it would be worth optimising the catalog, if you haven't already done so.
Another idea, may be to make a fresh catalog and "import from another catalog" your current one, into that. This transfers pictures and keywords, collections, smart collections etc. But if there is something "structural" or "infrastructural" wrong with your live catalog, I'd expect that to get left behind by this process - since everyting should AFAIK get re-indexed after being brought in.
Then you'd go forward with the new catalog, if successful. Doing this makes no change to your present catalog so can do no harm to try - the various pictures' source files are simply shared across both catalogs - single file referenced by both, IOW.
One thing in your post (which I did not fully understand) suggested to me that your workflow relies at some point, on external metadata being written. If your workflow and smart collections criteria rely on the LR tracking of the status of external metadata, such as "is up to date", I believe this specific aspect has been found quite buggy and unreliable by many people: the metadata status badges etc, being sometimes rather approximate in their correspondence to reality . So if some other criterion could be found on which to base your workflow, that would probably go more smoothly .
However, if you do have more than one catalog pointing to just one set of photo source files, that aspect of writing metadata out, will of course be a little problematic - since the latest catalog to have written to the file will "overwrite", and the other catalog(s) will regard that same image as having been externally modified meanwhile.

  • LR 3.2 new smart collection not getting correct capture date?

Just created a new smart collection after updating to LR 3.2.
It's showing photos taken in 2008 and 2009, well beyond the last two months. Checked the capture date displayed in LR. The older photos shown have been edited within the last two months.
Bug or am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks.

There was bug with "months" since Lightroom 2. Looks like it has never been fixed.
Try setting "60 days" instead of "2 months".

  • Smart Album not so smart?

Hi. A few months ago I upgraded from iPhoto to aperture. It's all rather confusing but I've been willing to overlook it because of the usefulness of aperture as an advanced photo editor.
Now however all sorts of weird things are showing up. The Smart albums in particular are bizarre. Even the ones that come pre-made in Aperture. In particular the “in the last month” and "in the last week" etc. contain images from all over the map, as it were. Yes, there are images from in the last month, week or what have you—but there are also random images from all sorts of other time frames, projects, albums and folders.
This is particularly annoying because it also seems to have messed up the way photos are synced with my iPhone which (much to my surprise) is one of my favorite things to do on the iPhone: display my photos. Albums on the iPhone contain images often repeated 75 times or other such bizarre problems.
I assume something is corrupt somewhere but I don't know how to “reboot” my libraries without losing precious information.
Can anyone tell me what is wrong with my smart albums and what is wrong with the syncing.
    Many thanks…

As a new Aperture user myself, I had a similar issue. Maybe it's related to yours.
Smart Albums have many options to choose from, and I was a bit confused at the beginning. While setting the Smart Album, you need to be sure you're marking the options you really want/need, and nothing else. For example, my "In the last month" Smart Album showed only one photo, and that wasn't correct.
But the reason was simple: I had written some text in the Search/Filter field (upper right), and obviously that was filtering the not-so-smart results in my folder.
    Hope that helps.

  • Smart Groups not so "smart".

I have noticed that within Smart Groups I can not Edit Distribution List email addresses. After I change, they do not stick. Editing Distribution List works on regular Groups no problem.
Anyone have this issue or answer?
Also isn't it funny the Smart Groups do not sync to MobileMe or iPhone, once again not so "smart".
    Any suggestions?

I'm not sure what you mean about editing distribution list addresses, but what you need to understand is that Smart Mailboxes are not actually mailboxes. Think of them more like saved searches - they remember what you're searching for and do a new search for those items when you view them. This is why they don't behave like regular mailboxes in many ways.

  • Smart Guides- Not that Smart?

    Problem: Can't snap a curcle's center to a multi-angled (45 and 90 degree) path
Device and Program details: Illustrator CS6 running on a 2009 iMac (3.06 Ghz Processer and 16 GB RAM)
I've worked with Ai for years but can't remember running into this problem but it seems so simple. When I click, hold and drag center of the circle over the angled path it pretends its not even there. But when I make a sigle straight line, the circle will snap to that path. So my question is, can smart guides even do this (and if so, how) or is this a glitch with the new CS6?
I've experimented with the Smart Guide preferences but nothing seems to work. If you have any feedback please let me know.
Here is a pic of the the object and path I'm trying to snap:

They changed the behavior of Smart Guides with CS5, I think. (Maybe it was CS4) In some circumstances, you need to hold cmd to get it to snap.
If that doesn't work, are there any compound shapes that encircle the area shown?  Sometimes they can be an invisible block to clicks and snaps, even though there isn't anything visible...

  • "Smart" Rewards - not so Smart I think

So I get the Email, and sign up. My Verizon Smart Rewards You have 33,050 points waiting for you.
Cool. lets go take a look at what I can get.  Unfortunately, it seems Verizon caps you on how many points you can use per item.
    For example:
Beats Studio Over-Ear Headphone (More Colors Available)
    Retail Price:
    $269.95
    Points:
    –5,400
    You Pay:
    $215.95
    (20% Savings)
I have 33,050 points here to use, what gives? From what I can tell 5400 points above equals $54.00
So every 1000 points should equal $100 of actual "credit".  I guess Verizon is not giving me a $3300 shopping spree after all.
Goodbye Verizon, just waiting for the next iPhone to come out so we can switch to T-Mobile.

I've been a Verizon customer for 12 years. I too just started the "Smart" rewards. What a crock! I can buy most of this stuff cheaper off Amazon.com and don't need any points to do it. Verizon is just trying to scam us another way. Guess they haven't had as much luck screwing over people with the "Edge" scam yet. I remember when this company actually cared about making it customers happy but when they forced me off my unlimited data to fund their corporate greed, I lost my "Loyalty" to them. I like you am just waiting to Switch to another carrier.

  • Smart Objects not too Smart

Created a graphic in Ai CS6, dropped into Ps CS6 as a Smart Object, but when I want to edit the Smart Object from Ps CS6 it wants to open it in Ai CS5. What is happening to the smartness of the Smart Object? Any help is appreciated. Thx

Thanks for the help ^ emil emil. I uninstalled CS5, and received a message saying the was no no program associated with the file. Looked at my preferences in Ai, nothing to changed. So it dawned on me that you were talking about the program preferences in Windows 7. Ah Ha!!! No program associated with the .ai files. Re-associated them with Ai CS6 and everything works great, including the Smart Obects. Wondering about other file associations with Dw, Fl, Id, Fw that I will run into. Thanks again.

  • Smart Albums Not So Smart

I'm trying to set up Smart albums to show my kids and their friends. However, when I organized the photos, sometimes I used Face recognition and other times I just used keywords via hotkey. This was because sometimes it wasn't worth the trouble to add a face box to a photo.
But now that I want to make a Smart Album, I can't make one that shows by Face OR Keyword. It's all or nothing. Is there a work around or something I'm missing?

    Yes you can
    Set it to 'Any'
    Then
    Face is Ben
    Face is Harri
    Keyword is Ben
    Keyword is Harri
and it will any pic is has been "Faced" Ben or Harry, and any photo that is keyworded Ben or Harry
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!

  • Smart Playlists Not So Smart?

Ok...maybe I am missing something, but If I create a Smart Playlist, with the criteria of: Genre: Country, Year: 1990-1999, Then why does Don Mclean's American Pie (Greatest Hits) show up, when that is clearly marked as Rock Genre, and release date 2000???
    What am I doing wrong?

Dont have time to dobble check everything, but what needs to happen is set it to "match 'ALL' of the following rules" and then set rules to "genre,IS, country" and then "year, _IS IN THE RANGE_, 1990, 1999". that should do it. let me know how it goes. if it dosent work i can figure it out after classes.

  • Media Smart DVD, not that smart.... Will only play some blu ray, not all.

When I get a computer with a blu ray player I expect it to play blu ray discs... all of them. It works with some but not all.
The discs it does not work with, what happens is it will ask me "Do you want to check for updates" and there will be a box to check yes or no. In the background it will say disc is ready to be played, just push play. Easy right? HECK NO.
If you check yes, it will do the little wait symbol and process the request checking for updates, then come right back and ask you again, a never ending circle of asking to check for updates. If you push NO, it will go away, then you have a couple options, one is open up the menu and see if there is actually an update... nope. no update there. the other option is do what it says and push play since it thinks the blu ray is ready to play. Once I push play it starts to think and pops up that "Do you want to check for updates" again. It is so frustrating. HEY HP, FIX THIS DUMB CIRCULAR TRAP THAT WONT LET ME WATCH BLU RAY.
And this is a major motion picture blu ray disc from block buster video. Not some copied random disc. So, I know it aint the disc.
    This question was solved.

I am running into this same issue. I have a HPE-180t with a BD-RE BH20L Blu-Ray drive. I put in 'Scott Pilgrim vs The World' and got a message that asked if i wanted to update, to which I clicked 'NO' and then after about 5 sec of it seaching the drive it replied with "Format Not Supported". I ejected and reinserted a few times and tried another Blu-Ray movie (also The Expendables) and it gave me the same message.
I searched the internet and found a forum message with steps to uninstall the DVD portion of MediaSmart and reinstall using Recovery Manager, but after the uninstall now Recovery Manager will not open to reinstall HP MediaSmart DVD.
I then attempted a Windows System Restore to a few days prior, which went through the motions, but then had a failed message upon reboot.
I then ran the HP Support Assistant > Troubleshoot > Utilities> Storage Devices> Optical Drives and ran the test on the BH20L drive which failed in recognizing any Blu-Ray media (movie or blank BD-R). I had just used this drive a week ago to archive some photos onto the blank Blu-Ray media mentioned without issue.
Please help HP, this is really a nuisance for this seriously robust machine.
[edit]...Also I went out to the website for my system looking for any updates and the only one I installed was a BIOS update dated November 2010.
