Smooth Cam on interlaced video

I am trying to use the Smooth Cam node on video shot at 29 frames a second. I have had good luck in the past using 24 frame footage shot using the P2 cards for the Panasonic HVX-200 but this time I am using footage shot on miniDV. The problem is there is noticiable motion blur. Is there any way to help smooth that out and make it look better?
Thanks,
cja

I have followed the steps of the tutorial " Using Shake to Remove the Shakes" that can be found here (for free) : http://www.rippletraining.com/engine/ripplecasts.html with impressive results from dv footage.
If I remember well deinterlacing was requested. Of course results may vary because good and bad's subjective...but it's worth a look!

  • FCP7 HV20 Video Capture to ProRes no longer can do smooth cam

Canon HV20 capture into FCP via ProRes. With FCP6 I could then use smooth cam. With FCP7 smooth cam will not work for new captures. Previous captures smooth cam does work. Old (Apple ProRes 422 29.97fps15.2MB/sec) New - everything is the same except 14.5MB/sec. So capturing is OK -- smooth cam will work on previous captures (and will work on HDV captures) just not new ProRes captures.

Take a look at your capture settings in Audio video settings. Highlight the preset and select edit. see if you can select "remove advanced pulldown"
It is available on the dvcProHD settings. not sure why you've chosen HQ instead of straight pro res. My understanding is HQ is for greater than 1920x1080.

  • Smooth Cam not exporting properly in FCP 7.03 - please help

    Hello
I have a 30 minute video edit. A small number of clips have the smooth cam filter applied with default settings. When I export the finished project to a number of varied settings - pro res, pro res LT, apple tv, iphone etc... All the smooth cam clips are jittery and juddering -  and are not working for some reason.
I have done a bit of research and apparently it's a bug in FCP 7.03 with interlaced footage (progressive works fine, apparently). All the source footage was transcoded to pro res.
Someone said that putting the clips in motion and smoothing them out in optical flow would work and people had results. However I have no clue how to do this..
Can someone please help me - I need to render a finished project today..
    Thanks in advance
    Nick

Apparently it's a bug with Smoothcam's handling of interlaced footage in FCP 7.0.3 ... there's a post over on the Creative COW website detailing using Motion instead as Finnur mentions above.  Here's my own quick summary of that for those that aren't used to it :
In FCP select the clip instance and choose FIle > Send To > Motion Project (or right click and choose Send To > Motion Project) and save the Exported clip to your scratch disk
The exported clip will open in Motion. Click the clip to select it and then from the toolbar at the top of the main window choose ➀ Add Behavior > Motion Tracking > Stabilize
Next choose ➁ HUD (heads up display), and in that window ➂ set Method : Smooth, Borders : Zoom, and select Adjust : Position & Scale, and click the Movement : Analyze button
When the Analysis is complete, choose Motion menu > Quit, and press "Save" when prompted.
When you return to FCP the smoothed Motion project (.motn) should be sitting in the sequence in place of the original clip ... it'll probably need rendering .
Personally, I'd be inclined to just try adding the Shift Fields filter (Effects > Video Filters > Video > Shift Fields) to the jittery Smoothcam shot in FCP first, and see if that works, before jumping through the Motion hoops.
    Hope it helps

  • Motion Stabilizer vs Shake Smooth Cam

    Hello all,
I am a Final Cut Express user that is looking to take some camera jitter out of a few clips I've taken. I know that FCE has and image stabilizer filter but for the life of me I can not seem to get good results by using it. This may or may not be operator error but in my defense I have done some research on using it. I also have access to Motion as well as Shake and in my research I've discovered that these apps also have tools for image stabilization.
I've also discovered iStabilize which is much more consumer based (probably a good thing based on my sklills) but it would require purchasing it and it mostly likely will not provide the results of Motion or Shake (if I can figure out how to use them).
To remove the video camera shake, which app will most likely produce better results and what additional considerations should be noted?
Keep in mind that I have a decent background with FCE but virtually no background in Shake or Motion. I have however reviewed the manuals and watched a few demos. I've also launched both apps and have taken a stab at both (again with limited results). In motion I was able to apply the Stabilizer behavior and actually export the clip but I'm pretty confident I'm not utilizing it to the fullest as my clip is still very shaky. In Shake I was able to start a new script and add the Smooth Cam node but I could not figure out how to export the clip. Can I export as a quicktime file so I can easily put it back into my FCE project?
So I guess my main questions are:
Which app will remove camera shake better?
How do I actually do it?
Before I switched to Mac I used a very basic app for image stabilization. It was not a pro app but it was easy to use and produced decent results. I liked the fact that it had a split screen view where I can compare the clip before and after. From my poking around in Motion and Shake I can't seem to find a similar view.
Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
ps. Here is an example of the videos I make. Its non-professional but I do like my projects to look decent. If I can learn a little about Motion or Shake and successfully have a good workflow for removing camera shake I will be thrilled. Thanks!

    YOU DA MAN captain mench!
That was just the type of thing I was looking for. It really helped bring the pre-existing knowledge I've gathered from my readings and 1st attempt into scope. I've now got the motivation and confidence to get back into shake and try it again. Thanks!
In regards to the camera and video. Thanks and glad you liked it. I shot it with the Canon HV10. The video I posted wasn't so much an example of the camera jitter as much as it was just an example of what I do. Thanks for the advice either way. I'm looking forward to doing more color correction in my projects too. Up until now I've settled for less. As I learn the apps I'm more interested in making the absolute best I can. I'm sure I don't have to tell you it's a work in progress.
Thanks again. I'll be back if I need more help.
ps. Does color correcting the clip first have any effect on how well Shake and SmoothCam will remove jitter? Also, when I send from FCP to Shake does it remove the interlacing? I noticed that SmoothCam only works with de-interlaced footy. Thoughts?

  • HELP - Interlaced video playback stuttering!!

    Hi all,
I'm having problems with Quicktime playback of Interlaced video. For testing purposes, I'm playing back a PAL 20 second h.264 clip on a secondary display attached to my MacBookPro with the Apple DVI-S-Video adaptor (set to 720x576 interlaced PAL 50Hz).
When I play the clip, it stutters/flickers (almost like the fields are inverted?).. If I pause then play the movie repeatedly (i.e : stop/start with the spacebar) the problem seems to rectify itself for a few minutes and everything runs smoothly, then it happens again, until I pause/play again.
I'm on Leopard with the latest updates.. I desperately need to find a fix for this ASAP as I have a tradeshow install in a couple of days time.. Any help would me most appreciated.
    Thx

I've never tried how well interlaced material transfers from the Mac directly to an interlaced TV...
But I do know that feeding interlaced .dv from iMovie (in passthrough-to-camcorder mode) via FW a a TV is fine. Or burn it to avideo-DVD via iDVD and use a standalone DVD player to present it.
Maybe H.264 sometimes loses its field sync? Could you use brute force and deinterlace it and live with the less smooth movements of progressive video?

  • How to export h.264 interlaced video??

hi, my situation is the following: i have a full hd (1920x1080i50) camcorder which gives me just interlaced video clips with 50 half frames per second in AVCHD. i dont want to deinterlace the material, cause it taks too much time, the quality looses and the filesize is doubled (if i want to keep every frame).
i want to cut it with imovie 08 and then export it back into h.264 in interlaced format. (because i want to burn it to a data-dvd and play it in a playstation3. and h.264 is the only full hd format, which the ps3 is able to play, i think).
but in the export preferences i cannot choose between the options "interlaced" or "progressive". and the export with quicktime as h.264 or mpeg-4 is always in progressive mode, ignoring the interlaced material. the result is a progressive video with 25 full frames per second showing 2 half frames mixed together in one frame with the typical "interlaced-lines-error" or in germany we are talking about the "picket-fence-effect". it seemes that imovie does not identyfy the interlaced video automatically.
the imported videos from the camera are definately imported by imovie as interlaced video. i can check it in the quicktime player by turning on the "deinterlace"-option. quicktime playes the video deinterlaced, the "picket-fence-effect" dissapears. if i do it with a exported h.264 videofile from imovie, nothing happens when i turn the "deinterlace"-option on. the "picket-fence-effect" does not dissapear.
today i already loaded the quicktime update, but i still can not export in mpeg4/h264 interlace.
can somebody help me?? i spent already several days with exporting, searching the internet and burning dvd-rs.
    thanks

You should give MPEG Streamclip a try:
    http://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
In this program, interlace/deinterlace is an option for MPEG-4 conversions, although I haven't used it myself.

    hi,
I'm not a big Shaker user but i believe you have to apply an Output node in order to render stuff out. However Specialcase is correct since Motion and Shake use the same technologies the results should be pretty similar. Motion is obviously easier to use. Just play around with the settings you'll get there. Motion doesnt have the split pane view, but you can just toggle the filter on and off to compare.
Had a look at your film, and it looks very nice, the images are really stunning, well shot. Does that have camera stabilization in it. Looks pretty good. But did you know that the music track is only coming out of one channel?
    Keep at it

  • HELP: Smooth Cam wont work!!!

    Hello,
I have been having some trouble applying the Smooth Cam Effect to clips in FCP 6. When a clip is active and I go to turn on the smooth cam effect in the video effects folder nothing happens. Smoothcam has no effect when it is applied. Replaying the clip with the effect on it does absolutely nothing different from the original. This is not a problem with exporting. This is a problem of just applying the effect to a clip. It doesnt even analyze the clip it should be applied to.......
I have used this effect on other footage and have seen the difference it can make. However, with the clips I am currently working with I see no difference. All of the footage I am trying to apply this effect to is very jittery with a lot of fast camera motion. Footage that I thought would be perfect for the Smoothcam effect. Has anyone else experienced trouble with the smoothcam? Is there something I am doing wrong here?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that the clip's media you are having troubles with was previously analyzed.
Control click the clip/s in question and in the popdown menu choose reveal in finder.
If next to the original media you find a file with blank icon and extension .mtdf delete/trash that and apply smoothcam again.
Remember that when applying the filter the entire media file to which your clip in the timeline refers to will be analyzed.
If you want a specific portion (an edited clip) of the media to be affected by SCam then set IN and OUT and export that as QT movie self-contained (no loss of quality involved) then re-import that and apply SCam.

  • Which cable do I need to connect my Mac Book Pro to my Panasonic PV-GS150 video camera for transferring video to iMovie?

which cable do I need to connect my Mac Book Pro to my Panasonic PV-GS150 video camera for transferring video to iMovie?

    I totally understand.
Check some things from here, I have 2 and they have been great so far.
Check here, lots of storage and reasonable prices. Also great support, you get to speak to a person
Clean off your on the G5 drive and off you go.
I suggest buying a second drive and setting it up for a back up, Time Machine or Carbon Copy Cloner, or SuperDuper (both "bootable" back up) All searchable on the web.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/search/elite+pro
You can talk to a person for REAL advice, Phone: 800.275.4576  Ask about exporting to your G5 and and exporting to your existing OSX, you may only need a small inexpensive drive for this.
Quick delivery and willing to help.
Hope this makes you back up and running :-)
Do get a back up drive, as it is not ""whether my drive will fail, as much as "when my drive fails"

  • Have old video tapes; compact VHS. Have camera with S-video out

Have compact VHS tape archive. Have camera with S-video out & good VHS player/adapter with S-Video out. Also have old PC with dedicated hardware capture card/cable and Pinnacle Studio. Am considering starting over with purchasing iMac for editing. I could capture on the old PC and move files to iMac. If I want to do it all on iMac, what is the best way to capture and what do i need?

TExcellent suggestion! Read about it, ordered it on Wednesday and I just captured a S-VHS-C through the box from my camera to my old iMovie 6.0.3 on my G4. Worked right out of the box as advertised. Now I can experiment a bit while I muse about that I7/27" iMac I'm going to buy. I also went to the Apple workshop on IMovie/iDVD. It's a long way from my old Pinnacle Studio.

  • Can you move a video taken on the iPad from the camera roll to 'Videos' without syncing through iPhoto?

Pretty simple question that I can not figure out the answer to. Can you move a video taken on the iPad from the camera roll to 'videos' on the go?

I can do it on my iPhone and, according to the iPad manual (p. 58), you can do it on an iPad.
Try a reset by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.

  • Can you convert Interlaced video to Progressive?

Does anyone know if there is a way to simply convert interlaced video to progressive video? I don't have Apple Compressor, and don't know of any other way to convert interlaced to progressive. Any ideas?

I am clearly not the best person to answer this question...but.
Depending on why you want to change interlaced to progressive, there are several ways to approach this.
There is 3rd party software like the previous offered, and a few others, but if you are simply going to upload to the web or show it on other computers I would just export the movie in a progressive format, using export> Quicktime Conversion. Then select the settings you would like to use.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does interlaced video have vertical black bars?

Despite looking all over the internet and asking video editors I know, I've never yet found a satisfactory answer to this question:
When I bring DV PAL footage into my Mac, why are there always very thin black vertical bars on each side?  And why is the image being squeezed slightly?
I think it may have something to do with interlacing.
If you look at my screenshot here.
You can see that the top image (QuickTime 7 Player) exhibits the issue I'm talking about (the prescene of combing on the man shows this is interlaced).
But the black bars have disappeared in the bottom image (QuickTIme Player X) - and you can see that it looks slightly horizontally stretched by comparison. I'm guessing this is something to do with the fact that QuickTime Player X DE-interlaces video.
The question remains though... what is it about interlacing that introduces black bars and an incorrect aspect ratio??

If you are ripping "standard" format content (4x3 ratio) then it will just appear like that on a widescreen TV. You shouldn't have that problem if you're ripping widescreen content (16x9 ratio).

  • CANT GET MY CAMERA TO UPLOAD VIDEO!

So i got a Kodak EasyShare C813, ive already put about 1000 pics on iPhoto but when i try to import my video clips to iMovie it says theres no camera connected. Is the camera too advanced for OS X 10.2.8? or is there something i can do? i dont really wanna spend any money for a new operating system yet and im sure as **** not gonna go get a new camera...
    SOMEBODY HELP!

Suggest you buy (about $10 - $20) a USB memory card reader. Just plug your camera's memory card into it & copy the pic/video files to your Mac. Quicker & easier than interfacing the camera for pic/video transfer.

  • Smooth Cam - Mulitple filters???

I needed to apply the smooth cam filter to 4 angles that I shot of a Karoke Contest.  All clips were about an hour.  Unfortunatly, I found out about the smooht cam feature after I had already edited all the angles to give me one fluid picture.  You know, camera 1, camera 4, camera 1, camera 3, and so on...  So clicked select all and applied the smooth cam filter.  The first clip took about 7 hours to render.  I was OK with that.  But the time kept getting longer and longer, until my 3rd clip was going to take 17 hours.  I couldn't select remove atributes "filters" because I had used some color correction filters and flop filters, but a strange thing happened.  I had 6 smooth cam filters on each clip.  I found this out by clicking on the clip and bringing it up in the browser.  Is that normal?  Or did it happen because I would choose smooth cam filter, then quit after the first clip was done, then selected smooth cam filter again.  So that's my first question.  My next would be: should I do this?  Finish the edit, adjust the audio, then export as a sef contained quicktime movie.  Then reimport that clip and apply the smooth cam to that?  I would assume since it is now one clip that it would only have to render once, not 4 times, but I could be wrong.  And will the smooth cam filter work on the quicktime clip, even though is is switching angles of the shoot?

You could try this.  Edit each entire clip individually into it's own sequence (with sequence settings that match the clip settings) and the sequence name matching the clip name, EXACTLY.  Apply the smoothcam filter to each clip in each sequence and adjust parameters to your satisfaction.  Then export each sequence to a new folder on your hard drive.  When it's done, duplicate your project (for safety's sake) and reconnect the original clips to these new clips.  Remove the unnecessary smoothcam filters in your sequence.  Should work fine.
