Smooth or not smooth footage

Hi, I have been using iMovie 11 for a year or so with my Sanyo Xacti HD2000 (3years old), which for those that know is a great little unit but has its niggles.  Anyway I have been easily creating footage from it with no problems but do find it a little jerky on panning on whatever setting I use. 30fps(smoother) or 60fps(quality execelent, but panning poor)
I was considering upgrading to a new cam (panasonic SD800 or SD900), as having seen the footage from them it seems to have advanced somewhat.
My question though, is FCPX going to produce smoother and better quality footage when shared at 720p for apple tv than iMovie 11. I suppose by rights it should, as it's a pay for app as apposed to free software.
Any thoughts welcome.
Let's not get technical, I record holidays but love editing and playing back on apple tv. Shall I get FCPX and not buy new cam or is the new AVCHD cams better quality and improve the jerky panning.

The original media will not be better what ever edit software you use. FCPX will not make your output project better than iMovie does. Good paning has little to do with you camera. Shooting at 25  will cause jerky paning. And iMovie is an excellent software for the casual user.

  • FCE not capturing footage

I am using FCE 3.5.1 on a G5 Dual Processor using OX 10.4.10. I can not capture video to FCE from my two Sony DV cameras. FX1 and TRV 22. This just started after years of no problems. I have pulled preferences and reinstalled FCE several times. But the problem continues.
I can operate the camera, but it acts as though there is no time code on the tape. The time code on the tape is fine as I have captured this footage on other systems.

    G'Day Mate
Thanks for the reply. I have tried the Quicktime Receipts removal, but did not solve the problem. Only had one Quicktime pkg listed. It did have numbers. While I was there I pulled the FCE HS pkgs as well with numbers.
FCE HD does recogizine the cameras and will control it from Capture, but does not capture footage correctly. With clips it pays no attention to cues in and out. In "now" it will freeze the picture while continuing to record the sound.

  • Smoothing footage from a car

I've seen in video's where someone's filmed looking out of a car window and the window is set up deadly still. Other one i've seen is footage from a wakeboard boat and everyting else moves apart from the boat when its sped up. Don't think its the smoothcam feauture as it would be rolling. Is there a tutorial somewhere or is it just shots from a camera setup still and same place and timelapsed?
    Cheers,

  • Will not ingest footage.

I'm trying to ingest footage from the log and transfer window. I used to be able to do it and now I can't. I have a canon hf 10 and 1 TB external harddrive that i use as a scratch disk cause i'm working on a macbook. I have the setup in 1080i and 60i, which is how my footage was shot. I have the Apple Intermediate Codec checked in the AVCHD Plugin. I don't know what is going on, but when i open the Log and Transfer window nothing happens and it won't ingest my clips. Any suggestions?

I am having a similar problem with my Sony HDR-XR520 camera. I just got both the camera and MacPro this week. I had FCE seeing the clips earlier this evening, but got the exclamation point and they stopped transfering. I mucked around with some of the preferences and now nothing shows up.
I have tried both the codecs under the little gear sign on the Log and Transfer window. Not sure if the frame rate makes any difference. There are also settings to mess with on the easy set up.
Which plist exactly are you suggesting we trash? There seem to be quite a few.
    thanks

  • Composition size not matching footage-Please help

Hi I am really hoping someone can help me with such a basic problem. I open up After Effects CS4, then import a video clip which has dimensions of 1440x1080.  Then I drag the clip onto the new composition icon which is SUPPOSED to create a composition with the same parameters as the footage. But instead the footage is the wrong aspect ratio and appears to be squashed into a 4:3 box (or so it appears)
PLEASE Help if you can I am really aggravated
    Thank you very much

Thank you again Dave. Please forgive all the dumb questions. I'm pretty good on the photo end but admittedly lacking much knowledge about video.
Here's where I'm getting confused right now
My video was shot out of the camera at 1440x1080.  That is a 4:3 ratio
If I render it to 720x480, this would be a 3:2 ratio. Wouldn't that distort my video?
You stated that if I wanted to keep my work at 16:9 that I should render to NTSC DV Widescreen but I didn't think I was ever at 16:9.  Wouldn't that be 1920x1080?
Since I thought my video was shot in HD would rendering to DV minimize the quality?
"Nest your current comp in the new comp"   Should I make a new composition in After Effects using a different format?
"Render in a lossless codec in AE"   My clip in After Effects was actually only about one minute long. I am using that clip in a Premier Pro project that is about 15 minutes long. I saved the .aep project and then imported it to Premier without rendering it.  Then I was going to render the entire 15 minute project all at once. Should I do this differently?
Should I do as Rick stated above and create a new composition in 1920x1080?  If I do wouldn't that leave two black bars on either side?
As I'm typing this I'm realizing that my entire Premier Pro project is the actual size of the video 1440x1080 so I'm not sure how I would create a new comp there.
    Oh soooooo many questions

  • Color Dipper not reading footage

So when I try to use secondary color correction or the color change effect the color dipper  won't pick up the colors off the footage. When I roll over the footage it just remains black, and therefore making these effects almost useless. I can pick out a color using the color picker, but its really hard to match or add colors to that. So I am wondering if anyone else has this problem. I am running prmiere 5.5.1
I am working with MTS files, shot in 60p with the Sony HXR-NX70U. Any ideas or suggestions on how to fix this would be awesome.

  • Log and transfer does not recognize footage. Please Help

When i open the log and transfer window in FCP on my macbook it no longer recognizes the files from the Contents folder of a P2 card or the RED ONE files from the folder on my hard drive. last week however, everything was working fine.
does this have something to do with the project settings or the RED plugins? any help is greatly appreciated. thanks.

Have you changed your set up or software, or computer in any manner since last week?
And did you trash your preferences and try that?

  • Smooth Cam question with HDV

I am using the SmoothCam node with success both within final cut and outside with Shake alone. All using HDV footage.
My only problem is I get the smoothed video back into Final Cut no problem. All of the attributes (frame rate, codec, etc..) all seem to match my standard 1080i60 HDV preset and my unaltered video.
Whenever final cut tries to play this "smoothed footage" it always stutters through it and plays it at maybe a rate of 1 or 2 frames per second. It plays all of my unaltered HDV footage at what seems to be its native 30fps.
It does not need to be rendered as there is no bar in the timeline indicating it. It just never plays smoothly even when I move it to an empty timeline.
Does anyone know why? By the way the Quicktime video outside of final cut plays fine. And when I get info on the Quicktime movie it seems to match all of the normal HDV settings.
I am bewildered...anyone? I want to play my altered clips in my timeline in real time and can't seem to. Thanks-

Ok, answers to your questions. I render a file out node to HDV 1080i60 at 29.97 fps. The codec looks fine in FCP but as we mentionned earlier does not play back smooth.
On my boot drive I have 30 GB free out of 400GB drive. I did try to "RECOMPRESS" the file from within FCP to my desktop. I could render to my RAID or my 2nd internal drive which has more space.
I'll try 5 seconds of footage and let you know what happens when I render to my RAID.
By the way I did take as an experiment an HDV file and converted it to uncompressed to my RAID using compressor. The 1.5 min clip took about only a few minutes to convert and then I reimported that clip into final cut and exported it out using Quicktime to HDV 1080i60 which took just a few minutes. In 10 minutes the HDV clip..the final output played fine within Final Cut and this is one answer, although round about.
I'll try a 5 second clip and let you know using my RAID drive which has 1TB free out of 2 TB.

  • Mini-DV footage does not import into IMOVIE/ Camera not recognized

Sony Mini DV tapes do not import footage using firewire. Camera is not recognized. I have done all the troubleshooting suggested. unplug, plug in, turn on, off, etc. I have bought new firewires and tried to import with many different mini-dv camcorders, sony, panasonic. It worked before, but not now.
I teach in a multiple mac computer lab and have 20 computers, non of them import, although they did earlier. Student-use film lab. HELP!

    Hi Harm,
Yes, that's exactly what I do with my EX3 footage too - ignore the XML error messages. That's a bit buggy in it's own right, well, not buggy but it should really recognise the EX folder/file structure and ignore the XML files - maybe one for a feature request!
The 350 is a great camera - very much more sensitive and lower noise than the EX3.
I still like the EX3 though, as it's small and light (relatively!) - the 350 is very light though in comparisson to other shoulder mount cameras. Nice low power consumption too
Some things I miss from the EX3 - like the joystick menu button and the direct edit of parameters on the VF that the EX3 has. I also like the EX3 picure profile system over the 350 way of storing profiles (more similar to the 700 I believe).
    Cheers,
    Paul.

  • Why would Final Cut Pro 7 work smoother on one user account over another?

I just purchased a new 27" iMac 3.1 Ghz Intel Core i5, 16GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1024 MB. Just went to Mountain Lion a few days ago. I installed a licensed version of Final Cut Pro 7 on my account (Admin). However, the program immediately started to lag. I click on ANYTHING on the FCP interface (Modify, Sequence, etc), it immediately stalls for about 3 seconds, and then color wheel spins for a few more seconds before the menu finally drops down. Footage logs fine but the same thing happens when I drop a small video snippet on the timeline and try to play. Stall, color wheel, then it needs to "catch up" before the footage starts to play.
I don't think this has anything to do with footage formats or anything like that. I did a little research and someone said to open FCP on a different user account. I did and low and behold, FCP works swimmingly. Very odd. This particular person suggested to uninstall and then reinstall FCP on the main user account. I did. But I still have the same issue with the stalling and lagging of the program on the main user account. Now no footage is logged. It's just an empty project and I'm still having these problems with lagging. So I know it's definitely not a footage issue.
I ran diagnostics on my HD and everything is perfectly fine. Does anybody know of what could be causing this? Thanks!

Possibly corrupted preference files. If you don't have it already, download Digital Rebellion's Preference Manager.
Also, since you just did this fresh install, I'd repair permissions in Disk Utility.
    Good luck.

  • Premiere Elements 12 Not rendering all my footage Windows 8.1

I read other topics but what I found was only for Mac computers. I can't get all my footage to render it will only render the first 2 or 3 % and act like it's complete when it is not.. I know it's not the footage itself because I've been working on this project on and off for weeks and have rendered this project many time before with no problem at all. It just started to day. I don't know what else to do but start over and that will be the third time I've restarted this one  project that should even take this long! It's driving me nuts!
    Please Help!

    sew
Premiere Elements 12 on Windows 8.1 (assumed 64 bit).
    1. For the footage that you want to render to get the best possible preview....is there an orange line over that content before you hit the Render button?
    2. Look to the area above the Timeline, to the Work Area Bar and its 2 gray tabs. Are those gray tabs set to span the whole content of the footage that has the orange line over it?
Hope I caught you before you started over. We should be able to figure this out and save you the time involved
    with a re-do.

  • Capturing Gaming Footage

    Hi,
I want to capture a some game footage to use in a movie.
I have tried snapz and btv but i'm not having any luck in capturing smooth footage, it jumps really bad, or doesn't capture at all. Does anyone have any ideas on what i could do to improve it or if there is some better software out there..
    Thanks
    Kelly

What, exactly, do you want to do with the game footage after you've captured it? Since games can be processor and graphics intensive, you'll probably have a difficult time capturing the screen while you're using the Mac mini.
Final Cut Pro will only import video from a FireWire connection to a DV camcorder. It won't really help you with a project like this.
My first suggestion: Use the Apple DVI to Video Adapter to play your Mac mini's screen on a TV through a VCR. Then you could simply record the action on a videotape in the VCR. If you have a DV camcorder, you may be able to capture the footage to your camcorder instead of the VCR and then play it back directly to your Mac mini and capture it with iMovie. (Or, capture the footage on the VCR then play the VCR back to your camcorder to record it on DV and then play the DV tape back to the Mac mini/iMovie with a FireWire cable.) There are several different configurations like this that may work for you. Again, it will really depend on exactly why you're trying to capture the footage...

  • Workflow for footage replacement on output

Hi, I'm afraid I don't even know what to call this approach, it's always been a theoretical workflow in my head...as I've never had to use it...until now haha
But anyway I'm trying to edit from source footage all in AVCHD 1080p 24...  Suffice it to say, realtime decoding and editing of footage that high res is too laggy, which is understandable.
I'm more than happy to transcode my hundreds of gigabytes worth of footage into 720p 24 DVCHDPRO P2's for far smoother editing, but I still want my final output rendering to pull its footage from my original footage not the footage I have on the sequence.
Is there a streamlined way in Adobe Production Premium CS4 to set up mirrored folders with identical footage but with different encoding?  One folder for my sequence and editing, and the other for rendering?
I almost considered just setting up two folders with avisynth files masking two different locations and just frameserve that into Premiere when it was time to render, but that's not going to be possible because as far as I can tell, avisnyth has no available way of decoding mxf files.
I've read one place where someone from Adobe talks about transcoding the AVCHD footage into MXF files and then set up a watch folder so that the output is still 1080p......but I've looked everywhere for information about what watch folders are and how they work and can find precious little about it...and what I do find does not sound like what I'm thinking of...
Also if transcoding from a large pool of this high definition footage for editing, is my choice of editing encoding a good one?

The problem is often, when new to PR, that the terminology used in this program is often unclear or confusing. That is why it makes life a lot easier if you spend time reading the manual or help file to gain a good understanding of what is called what. Remember that when you post a question, all we can do is READ the post and if incorrect terminolgy is used, it makes it that much harder to understand what is meant. It really pays to read the manual or help file, because your questions will be much more effective with the proper terminology.
When you come into a car repair shop and say: "These black things don't turn anymore" the mechanic will look you over and - with much incredibility in his voice, react: "What do you mean, these black things?" You can then point to your tires and he gets the picture. That is not a luxury we have on the forums. If you were to fax the same question to the car repair shop, they probably would not even react. However, had you used the word tire instead of black thing, it would have made much more sense.

  • I have iMovie 09 and have successfully used an older Sony Handycam to directly capture and record. Now I have a Sony HDR-PJ230 and it is not recognized. Do I need to upgrade to iMovie 11 or ???

Now I have a Sony HDR-PJ230 and it is not recognized in iMovie09. Do I need to upgrade to iMovie 11 or ???

    Hi jcm2656,
iMovie ’09 does not support the Sony HDr-PJ230 camcorder. See this article for a list of cameras supported for that version of iMovie -
    iMovie '09: Camcorder Support
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3290#1
iMovie ’11 however, does support it. See this article -
Apple - iLife '11 Help - iMovie ’11 Supported Cameras
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html
Note that iMovie does not support footage recorded in 1080-60p from this Camcorder.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • After Effects will RAM Preview not in real time

Hi, we have 3 adobe After Effects CC up to date here, we are working on a 60fps project in HD 1080. Nothing crazy.
We have 20 Gigas of ram. Mac OS 10.8.5 octo core 2011. ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 Mo. SSD disque crucial m500 256 gigas.
We have a lot of problem with Ram Preview. (on every project)
Everything works fine until, we don't know why, the ram preview is getting not realtime, like 30fps or under.
Sometimes purge memory do the trick but not always.
We need to reboot and it works again, but few minutes.
We made a test on CS5 and it works well realtime, but same problem on CS6.
I tried to delete all the preferences to check but no difference.
We are working with nfs network account but i always redirect disk cache to local disk (set to 20 gigas) and also media conformed cache (database and cache)
We are getting mad, it's really hard to work that way, rebooting each time.
Maybe an issue with Global performance cache introduced in CS6 ?
It's not a footage/project issue because the entire project (a blend of tiff, png, prores422) can be played 120 frames/sec without any problem on after CS5, after CS6 (when it works), CC (when it works).
The problem is when working on project, changing layers, adding effects, After CC starts not be slow and not realtime using Ram Preview.
Also, when we are previewing, a lot of ram is not used, it only uses like 20% of the ram.
We hope for a nice patch very soon ....

60 fps is a very high frame rate not usually supported. If your footage is shot at 60i then it is probably 29.97 fps when converted to progressive video. If the footage is actually 60 fps then you will be better off, and by better off I mean more folks and streaming services will be able to view your video at the proper speed.
So my recommendation is to first determine your audience and then set up your comp appropriately. In all my years in the business I have only delivered one high frame rate project and that was 48 fps.
The other thing I would recommend is to optimize your system for AE. That does not necessarily mean throw all your available ram and processors at the app. There are some good recommendations here: Optimizing After Effects Performance
