So im trying to compile the kernel......

I'm trying to compile the kernel so i can use the ati drivers.
i have the PKGBUILD.custom_kernel file in a /var/abs/local/kernal/.

You just use FlashCS4?The first thing you need to check
    quote:

Alchemy is a technology preview and its features are not
supported in the FlexBuilder or Flash authoring environments yet.
This issue looks like it is caused by interaction between the Flash
CS4 compilers optimization pass and Alchemy-specific bytecodes.
Checking the "Export SWC" option skips this optimization pass and
avoids the problem. Be aware that this issue impacts other tools
which can generate SWCs containing Alchemy-specific bytecodes (e.g.
    Haxe).

  • Does compiling the kernel makes the system run significantly faster?

It used to be when you compiled your kernel (at least ten years ago), you would get a significant speed boost. However, with the speed of machine nowadays, I wonder how much, if any. Does compiling the kernel have a significant increase in daily performance or otherwise? If so, what portion of the system does it makes faster than before? In short, Is it worth it? I appreciate any comments.

The title of this thread doesn't limit responses to just redoing the kernel since it says "system run significantly faster".
The kernel is not the system...the system runs from HDD and ram.
To speed up that process, run everything possible in ram for system speed up.
I think for 500 packages loading from scratch to desktop in 45 seconds is fast.  And running after that in ram is super fast system speed "significantly faster".
The speed I quote is possible now.  With UDMA capability in the kernel, at least half of the install time is probable.
And that is for over 500 packages into KDE no less!
Using flash in IDE removes the latent search from the system and therefore must be faster.
Changing the kernel will indeed speed up the system...but only if it includes UDMA for the flash drives already available but not configured with the present kernels.
Using flash drives for ide cache repos will allow faster boot time, and reduce the load on the system.  You don't normally run many, many programs at once so put them in cache with a script to permit fast loading .
That is "system running significantly faster" and all in ram, the fastest in the computer.
    no
Does compiling the kernel makes the system run significantly faster?
    compiling kernel, not whatever
I did not suspect that this requires explanation?
but if you really want the noise, let's leave "faster?"
    and answer is: yes/no
    whatever that means.
    or you are joking
anyway seems that results may vary.

  • Manually compiling the kernel aith PKGBUILD

    Hi!
I am at the moment trying to recompile my kernel using the Arch Package management. So i picked a HowTo ( http://wiki.archlinux.de/?title=Eigener … _erstellen (It's german)) and followed it. The kernel was compiled and the kernel26custom-2.6.23-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz was created, but i can't install it. When i try to do it, the error output is as follows:

The rough translation of this error is, that a lot files were found that already exist and won't be replaced. I am a bit afraid to uninstall my current kernel package and install mine, i don't want to break my system...Or can i safely just rm -r  the kernel sources in /usr/src/linux-2.6.23-ARCH ?
    Thanks in advance, Hauke

that will force to replace those files.
Wait, now! That is really not a very good idea, you'd get (possibly) quite a mess. The problem is that your custom compilation is using the same library path as the stock kernel, so the best thing would be to fix your PKGBUILD to put its modules in /lib/modules/2.6.23-custom (for example). I'm afraid I can't off the top of my head tell you how to do that, but maybe someone else can ...?
If the wiki page is missing this information it would be nice if someone could fix it. You could have a look at the English wiki page(s) - maybe there's something there?

  • Permission problem when trying to patch the kernel

Hello, my name is Rodrigo and I have a VAIO laptop. The problem with it is that it has soo many privative components that are very hard to get to work under Linux. Fortunately, I found a project http://code.google.com/p/vaio-f11-linux/, which aims to provide full suport to VAIOs in Linux.
In order to do this I had to patch the Kernel http://code.google.com/p/vaio-f11-linux … nelSupport
So I started to follow the instructions.
    1) I downloaded from kernel.org the lastest stable release (2.6.39)
    2) I made cd /usr/src/linux and unpacked the tar contnents from the kernel file into this directory
    3) I made "sudo curl http://www.absence.it/vaio-acpi/source/ … 6.39.patch | patch p1" and I got this:
    patching file include/linux/sonypi.h
    patch: **** Can't rename file /tmp/poSN3DW6 to include/linux/sonypi.h : Permission denied
I don't know if I'm the problem or if the patch is "bad".I already submitted the problem to the Issues page from the project, but maybe I made something wrong, any help would be apreciated
    Rodrigo

I don't think sudo was meant for strange things like downloading a patch and then piping it into the patch command. If you want that to work, you should either run "su" to make sure you are root beforehand, or split up the commands like so:
    sudo curl http://www.absence.it/vaio-acpi/source/patches/vaio-2.6.39.patch >vaio-2.6.39.patch
    sudo patch p1 <vaio-2.6.39.patch
The generic instructions for using this patch will probably work but it will be cleaner if you look at the wiki page for Arch's take on custom kernels.

  • [SOLVED] Xmonad error when trying to compile the default xmonad.hs

    Hey,
if I copy the configuration file in /usr/share/xmonad-0.11/man/xmonad.hs,
    I get the following error
Error detected while loading xmonad configuration file: /home/me/.xmonad/xmonad.hs
    xmonad.hs:132:64: Not in scope: `help'
Please check the file for errors.
xmonad: xmessage: executeFile: does not exist (No such file or directory)
    The offending line is
-- Run xmessage with a summary of the default keybindings (useful for beginners)
    , ((modMask .|. shiftMask, xK_slash ), spawn ("echo \"" ++ help ++ "\" | xmessage -file -"))
I don't really need that particular keybinding but nevertheless I would like to know what's happening here.

as for what's happening: help is just not defined.
judging from the code you are trying to use, it is supposed to be a string. and indeed http://xmonad.org/xmonad-docs/xmonad/sr … Config.htm

  • How to compile a kernel module without recompiling the whole kernel?

    Hi,
I'm pretty sure my question is a bit newbish, still I haven't been able to found any information/solution to my problem in 3days.
The kernel I use doesn't come with the module I need for my hardware and I would like to know if there's a way to compile it without having to make a new kernel myself (since compiling the kernel takes ages on my machine).
Even if your answer is a "Let me Google that for you", I'm so desperate that I'll be happy to see it.
Thank you all in advance for your answers!

Do you have a /proc/config.gz that you could use? Otherwise I don't know. I mean, many modules should be compilable simply with the system-installed kernel headers, but not all native modules might follow that rule.
Unfortunatel most of what you find on the web talks about how to create new modules which can be compild against the installed kernel tree, not about how to compile one of the native kernel modules against it.
Actually, try what those links suggest.
Skip the configuration part, and just do:
    make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video modules
    (maybe `make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video clean` first )
EDIT: Meh, that uses your config and won't build that driver... there must be some way though
    EDIT2: Try:
    make -C /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build M=$(PWD)/drivers/video modules CONFIG_FB_VT8623=m CONFIG_FB_SVGALIB=m
The problem though is, that they might have removed some of the dependencies of the module, so if it doesn't compile, you'll have to recompile the kernel.
Good thing is though, you can use their .config as base (found in /usr/src/linux-..../.config)
You can also check if your config "supports" your module by putting it into the kernel source tree, running `make menuconfig` and typing /8623 and pressing enter.
The last line in that screen should read:
    Selects: <list of options>
As long as all of those options are either =y or =m, you're good. SVGALIB can be =n because it's part of drivers/video/ and you can compile it together with  your module.

  • [SOLVED] Can't compile any kernels or modules

I can't compile the kernel, or any kernel modules. I tried the [core] kernel from ABS and the linux-ck kernel from AUR. I also tried to build vhba and nvidia modules.
I tried the standard cflags and many others.
All kernel compiles fail (immediately) with:
scripts/mod/empty.c:1:0: error: code model kernel does not support PIC mode
/* empty file to figure out endianness / word size */
    ^
edward_81 had the same problem, with a default makepkg.conf and linux-mainline, which was never resolved.
I don't know why this file is being compiled in PIC mode. I have not explicitly enabled PIC anywhere I know of. I checked everywhere I know to look.

  • [SOLVED]How to patch the kernel? And other questions

Like the same user who started this thread I'm suffering from hibernation resuming troubles using kernel 2.6.38. In that thread was posted a soluttion that involves patching the kernel.
The patch to apply is this:
    http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/g … e3e9fc8684
Waiting for the bug to be corrected and a new version supplied is not an option, because this laptop is my main computer and I heavly rely on hibernation.
Here's my trouble now. I don't know if it is possible to patch without recompiling the whole kernel, or it has to be compiled with that patch applied. I have seen the archlinux's wiki guide about compiling the kernel, but found nothing about applying patches (maybe I didn't searched with enought depth).
In case there is needed a full compilation, should I use the vanilla kernel, the Arch Linux one or any of the AUR ones (I said AUR because they're the first that came to my mind)? Should i expect a performance gain with this (apart from fixing the hibernation bug)?
Maybe i'm just doing a bunch of dumb questions, and the only thing I need is to search deeply on the wiki. In that case, please tell me. If not, I rather get some answers around kernel patching and / or compiling questions.
Edit: In addittion, it is possible that all this questions are just newbie ones, I don't know, but as I am willing to learn from this I will appreciate any info or documentation about it.
    Thank you.

From the source tree (/usr/src/linux-whatever) execute
    patch -p1 < /path/to/fix.patch
then recompile kernel from the source tree.
Basically that consists of executing the following commands from the source tree:
    make menuconfig
    make
    make modules_install
    cp -v System.map /boot/System.map-CUSTOM
    cp -v arch/x86/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-CUSTOM
    mkinitcpio -k 2.6.38-CUSTOM -g /boot/kernel-CUSTOM.img
and you need to add menu entry in /boot/grub/menu.lst
-k 2.6.38-CUSTOM should corespond to /lib/modules/2.6.38-CUSTOM (replace 2.6.38-CUSTOM with the name of your module directory, name depends on the kernel version and suffix that you gave in menuconfig). Regarding kernel configuration in menuconfig - I can't help you, you could use arch stock kernel config (zcat /proc/config.gz > /usr/src/linux-whatever/.config)
I do these kind of things this way - maybe someone else have a more elegant solution.

  • Error while compiling the form

    Hi Everyone,
Im getting the following error, while trying to compile the form.
Compilation error on POST-QUERY trigger on XXX_CONTRACT_INFO data block:
    PL/SQL ERROR 0 at line 0, column 0
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve service name.
The instance which Im using is UP and running fine.
I am using some database links to access data from a different schema, but even those db links are working fine.
I am completly strucked up with this issue. Please help me.
    Thank you.
    Rams.

    Thanks for the reply.
Im not running the form in local database and more over if the problem is with only tnsnames, then the form should completly through an error. But in this case, the form is compiling all its objects, but its unable to compile only one block.

  • Compiling a Kernel. Benefits / Risks / Tips & Tricks ?

I plan on compiling my kernel for arch from scratch.  I have backed everything up on my computer and I am going to format the partitions and install a fresh copy of Arch.
I intend on following this guide to do it.
Doing some Googling and general research on the subject of compiling the kernel I mixed messages about what it can actually do for you.  I am going to do it either way, for the learning experience (and bragging rights) and so I can say I have done it at least once.  I also wan't to know more about the kernel, it seems like a good way to find out.
    Anyways, Any advice is appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Daniel

    @iamdanhenry,
The very first thing you should do is follow ewaller's suggestion and learn how to have multiple kernels with Arch.  I don't know how to do that yet as I'm an Arch newbie: my experience with compiling kernel's is on Debian.  The reason you want multiple kernels is exactly as ewaller said: what if your shiny new kernel won't even boot the system.
As for the modules being listed: that's just the hardware in your machine.  Not all modules you may need may be loaded until you actually need them.  Remember my USB/NTFS example?  Well, there's also the "character encoding" needed to mount an NTFS volume.  You can have both USB and NTFS support compiled into your kernel and still not be able to plug a thumbdrive successfully with an NTFS filesystem because your kernel doesn't have another piece: the character encoding used on the filesystem.
If you are unsure of which modules you need then there's perhaps do not use localmodconfig and instead just use the jobs number.  More jobs will still compile the kernel faster and if you don't use localmodconfig you'll just have a resulting "and the kitchen sink" kernel.
Now the link karol gave might be useful too.  From my gross understanding of it is that it has an option to keep a record of "all modules ever modprobed."  This could - if I'm understanding it right - help greatly in building a successful localmodconfig kernel that has everything you need.  You'd just have to build up a history of using your system day-to-day and have that package build up a list of everything you happen to need.  Once you have that history then compile a minimal kernel.
Another thing to explore - and I'm not certain of the compiler flags: perhaps someone else can help - is to enable specific compilation options for your machine.  For example, if your CPU flags include SSE2 support then compile your kernel with that flag set.  The benefit of setting compilation flags based on your actual processor's abilities is that in the end you may end up with a slightly faster overall machine.
