Software Update accessing strange commercial content?
Why does Apple's Software Update contact themercury.com.au.edgesuite.net ?
I can understand it contacting swquery.apple.com and swscan.apple.com, but what relevance is The Mercury to Software Update?
Note: I saw this yesterday and thought I was mistaken. So I ran it again today and sure enough - same result. No other applications were open, only System Preferences > Software Update!
As most people don't have connection history on display, it may escape notice.
As I reside in Australia that may explain the local angle, but why this newspaper site?. At the network contact there is high network traffic in both directions.

The use of the edgesuite server by what appears to be a newspaper, in this instance
where an update for software in your computer is offered, appears suspicious...
However, it may not be malicious; at least not according to previous history where
the edgesuite services had been involved officially by some large named entities.
A google of their name brings up several points of reference; however these do not
appear to give reason or cause for a +newspaper site+ to solicit your Software Update.
{Could it be, to piggy-back data through the newspaper's connection? Even more odd.}
Unless there are news widgets, or other items now in use in your computer, needing update.
Safari can be used to get news feeds, an example of a bizarre connection between these.

Since software update, can't see contents of iPod when connected to iTunes
About 2 days ago, when I connected my iPod to my pc (iTunes), it said there were some software updates for my iPod so I downloaded them and the iPod rebooted itself. Once it came back up, my iPod showed up in iTunes under "devices" on the left hand sidebar. I got the registration page - I usually click register later, but nothing happened this time. It didn't bring me into my iPod. So I tried to Register. I could get so far, then it asked if I wanted some free movie or something, I said NO THANKS, CONTINUE, but nothing happened. I wasn't registered AND I couldn't access my iPod. I can see my iPod under My Computer. I can see "sandra's iPod" uder devices in iTunes. BUT, I can't get to the content when connected to iTunes. All of my stuff is there on the iPod. I can play my iPod when it's not connected to iTunes - but I can't see the content, manipulate playlists, delete songs, etc. when connected to iTunes. I am almost positive this is a result of the latest software updates to the iPod. I have not updated iTunes - I didn't want to and compound the problem. I'm not a techy person - so please be gentle! Unable to do Software update, access iTunes, use widgets on dash and upload
*_Here is the problem:_*
1. Unable to use Software Update. When I try I get: "+A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again+" This is despite being connected to the internet and getting most things done.
2. Widgets which require data retrieval are not working. Notably weather and currency convertor.
3. iTunes cannot connect to the store. Tells me to check my network (which, if I do, I am told is fine, thanks)
4. Cannot view images (such as car rental vouchers) which are meant to display in email. In fact- the entire email disappeared before my eyes! But CAN, luckily, view on the server so I KNOW it is not just that the image is "spam" etc.
5. First thing on this list which made me wary- I cannot upload to YouTube, it times out ("unknown error" but timing out is mentioned) and this is using Firefox 3.8.3.
6. Safari will not load at all- it just keeps trying to load.
7. Displaying pages is slower than usual and downloading Onyx took ages and displayed no data regarding the file size or length of download time.
*_What I know:_*
1. I didn't update the last two times I was prompted because I was too busy to have it shut down on me and restart, etc.
2. I also had a go at trying to set up a web proxy and failed miserably. Though I actually changed the settings on another network to the one I am using I am so not network-literate that I fear that I have somehow done this to myself.
*_What I have tried:_*
1. safe starts, restarts,
2. deleting the preferences pertaining to Software Update from the various locations,
3. repaired permissions and-
4. thought of (I cannot afford to lose the data and haven't the time to back up just now- as per usual, this comes at the WORST time as I am on standby to fly out of the country due to VERY heavy and sad family affairs and need access to the files on the computer even if I cannot fully use the internet- just too many people/GB Pounds riding on this) using Onyx to try to "fix" this.
I have read up on others getting similar issues but am not certain that everyone has ALL the symptoms I am seeing (and then they may not be busy trying all these things on the one day and may not KNOW it is affected as well!). And I have tried each and every cure offered to these people. No good.When you are going to be connecting to different networks that require different settings--such as proxies--you must establish different Locations in your Network System Preferences. If you're going to be connecting at college, you may want to set up a location called "College" and set the proxy settings so you can use it there. Then, when you want to go online at school, go to System Preferences -> Network and change your location to College. Then when you get home, change your settings back to "Automatic" or whatever you've named your home location.
Your Mac doesn't differentiate between networks it's connected to in order to automatically apply different settings. It relies on you to do that through the Locations set-up.

Stuck in Restart Loop after Software Update
I recently ran the update to 10.5.3 a few days ago, and thankfully, it's been working great... until today, when I installed two seemingly innocuous updates via Software Update: one for the latest version of Quicktime and another for Apple Brother Print Drivers 1.1. After restarting, everything fell apart. Several of my start-up apps unexpectedly quit after login, and other apps either failed to launch when I tried opening them, or they simply got stuck in an endless loop of bouncing in the dock. I couldn't even force-quit them because they weren't responding at all. Thinking this strange behavior to be symptoms of some permissions issue, I popped in the Leopard installation CD and ran a permissions repair. It fixed several cryptic problems, one for something to do with Java and another for the cups folder, which I assume has some relation to the printer driver update. I then tried selecting my start-up disk and restarting, but the problem only got worse. Now my iMac is stuck in a restart loop. I tried booting in safe mode, but that hasn't worked. If worse comes to worst, I'll have to revert to a Time Machine backup, or else run an Archive & Install, but I'm trying to avoid that. Any suggestions? I'm also curious to know if these two updates had any relevance to these problems, and if so, what the cause may be. I'm thinking the printer driver is to blame, but then again that's only a stab in the dark. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried a Safe Boot again but unfortunately that didn't work, so I had to go ahead and do an Archive & Install. Now everything is up and running; however, I'm going to stay away from that print driver until I figure out exactly what went wrong. I did a little research and saw it listed on MacUpdate.com, where it was posted along with an interesting note: apparently, the update can only be applied if there is already a Brother print driver installed (in this case there was), and in addition to that, the printer must either be connected (and I assume on for the computer to know it's connected in the first place) or have an active print queue for the update to even be listed in Software Update. Strangely enough, neither of these conditions held true when I saw it in Software Update... so I think that might have been the cause, but I can't be sure. I was wondering if anyone else has installed this update successfully, and if so, what they did?

No Contents in Software Update Cache File Using 10.4.11
When running Software Update in 10.4.9, a "Software Update" cache file would be created in User-Library-Caches. The file would collect and retain cache data until cleared. Using 10.4.11, the cache file is created but there are no actual contents i.e. Zero KB. Has anyone else noticed this or do I have a unique problem? And if I do, can it be fixed? Of course this is not a big problem and everything else is working fine. I just wanted to understand the change if I could. Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately, I never gave it any thought, and just assumed the software updates were being deleted after they were installed. So I never looked in those folders to see and don't have anything to compare it to.
I thought that the actual payload of the software updates went into the /var/tmp directory, since I once had a problem with a software update and part of the fix involved messing about in that directory. But that was a long time ago, with 10.3 or earlier. If they do go into /var/tmp then I'm sure they'd be deleted at the next reboot.
But you are right, it is a bit odd to put empty folders in that cache folder. Or, if they aren't empty to start with, to have them be emptied, but not delete the folders themselves...

Hi Go to settings Reset Network Settings After Reset you need to enter your Router wireless key Before you do this turn off your Router for 30 seconds Also an option is to go on Websites for your make of Router look for any Firmware updates but you can do this later. Cheers Brian

Ok so you want Apple to address the problem, but yet you don't want to take it to them just in case they can't fix it? What if they can fix it? Complaining here certainly won't fix it. -
Mac won't update software or access iTunes shop. Message comes up with 'not connected to the net. Check connections' error. I still have internet access. Changed my Apple ID but no result. Repaired permissions and re-installed operating system.
It sounds like you may have multiple problems, but none of them are likely to be caused by malware.
First, the internet-related issues may be related to adware or a network compromise. I tend to lean more towards the latter, based on your description of the problem. See:

If investigation shows that this is not a network-specific issue, then it's probably adware. See my Adware Removal Guide for help finding and removing it. Note that you mention AdBlock as if it should have prevented this, but it's important to understand that ad blockers do not protect you against adware in any way. Neither would any kind of anti-virus software, which often doesn't detect adware.
As for the other issues, it sounds like you've got some serious corruption. I would be inclined to say it sounds like a failing drive, except it sounds like you just got it replaced. How did you get all your files back after the new drive was installed?

Cannot access address book after software update
I am unable to access the default address book after doing the software update - I restored my backup and everything is there except for my contacts. When I open my address book it is labeled personal and there are no addresses and when I add a contact it does not show up, but I noticed when I go into options it shows only default under address books with 99 entries and when I try to add a contact it does not show in the list on my phone but the number of entries in the default book goes up so they are going into that one but I cannot access it? Any idea how I can get my contact list back? (hope this makes sense to someone )

Java has updated again today,
i use a java plug in to run my virtual software to access my work from home,
today i have an error message saying that security will not allow access to my website

Error message 1053 following last Apple software update. Unable to access/re-install iTunes.
Is anybody else finding a problem with the last software update? I have tried the following several times:
Uninstalled all Apple components from PC including iCloud
Cleared out cache
Reinstalled iTunes
Each time the reinstall tries to load Services, the installation fails. I access the Apple Mobile Device Service via Adminstrative tools and attempt to 'start' the device but this won't work and I get the following error message:
"Windows could not start Apple Mobile Device Service service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in timely fashion"
If anyone has any workaround for this I would be very pleased for your advice.

I feel your pain - was losing the will with this and spent ages googling possible fixes. This worked immediately but it is just possible that Apple fixed whatever the bug was and my success was coincidental - who knows?!
