Software Update Server + Caching Service Questions

Hello everyone.
I'm currently trying to finish setting up our Caching service along with SUS and am running into some issues I hope to get some help with.  Our environment is configured as the following:
--  OS X Server 3.1.1 with clients running OS X 10.8.5 and 10.9.2.
--  All machines are bound and receiving GP via an AD environment using Centrify.
--  GP pushes out the following two scripts to all machines:
     *  sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.appstore restrict-store-softwareupdate-only -bool yes  -->  Setting which disables         all aspects of the App Store except for the Updates section
     *  sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://it0038-mmd.coveroregon.us:8088/catalogs.sucatalog          -->  Setting which redirects all of our machines to point to our SUS within our AD environment.
The problem I'm having is that I believe the Caching Service is working properly (at least with the 10.9.x clients) but it doesn't look like it is with the 10.8.5 clients; the same with SUS but for all clients.  I have two machines with clean images running 10.8.5 and 10.9.0 that I took on 03/05/14; after applying the images and going to Software Update before joining them to my AD environment the following shows as available:
10.8.5. via Software Update  -->  Java for OS X 2013-005 1.0, Safari 6.1.3
10.8.5 via Caching  -->  Nothing appears.
10.9.0 via Software Update  -->  Digital Camera RAW Compatability Update 5.04, iBooks Update 1.0.1, iTunes 11.1.5, Java for OS X 2013-005 1.0, OS X Update Combined 10.9.2, Remote Desktop Client Update 3.7.1
10.9.0 via Caching  -->  Keynote, Numbers, GarageBand, Pages, iMovie, iPhoto
Once I join them to my AD environment and have the scripts run on the machines the following appears within Software Update on both machines:
10.8.5 Clients  -->  Nothing appears!
10.9.0 Clients  -->  Keynote, Numbers, GarageBand, Pages, iMovie, iPhoto
It looks like Caching is working properly but I'm wondering why nothing shows up on my 10.8.5 clients but I'm guessing it's because the Java and Safari updates are with SUS?  I'm also guessing the other updates showing up on my 10.9.0 clients are specifically for Mavericks and hence why they're not also appearing on my 10.8.5 clients?  Of course the main issue here is that I can't get my machines to see SUS properly.
I'm happy to supply any logs or anything else that would help get this issue resolved.  It's really driving me nuts!  **** a Starbucks GC or other compensation is in it if someone can help me!
Thanks in advance!

MrHoffman,
According to SUS I currently have 769 updates and they are all downloaded.  When I check all of the logs I see the following:

  • How do I reclaim disk space, no longer using Software Update Server

    Hi All,
Hopefully a straight forward and simple question, but after searching for quite some time I’m unable to find an answer.  I am currently running OS X Mavericks Server 10.9.1 along with Server 3.0.2.  Among other services I have the Software Update Server enabled and it has been enabled and running since back in Lion 10.7.  I figured I would try the new Caching service which is “supposed” to provide similar functionality to the SUS but also include other new capabilities.  At any rate I had long ago configured the SUS to store the updates on a large RAID volume I have attached to the system (the ability to do that has been absent from the GUI for a long time now but it does migrate with updates).  At any rate I have STOPPED the SUS and using the “serveradmin” changed the “updatesDocRoot” back to the now default location of “/Library/Server/Software Updates/Data”, not that it matters since the service isn’t running nor will it be but incase I enable it again someday.  I have also moved the swupd.conf and swupd.plist files in “/Library/Server/Software Updates/Config” to .old files to back them up/delete them just in case. So now I have a bunch of updates stored on my RAID in a directory that I would like to delete to reclaim the space, however I’m a bit apprehensive to do so since I have not seen anywhere in the SUS documentation I’ve read that it is “safe” to do so.  The point being that someday if I chose to re-enable SUS that I don’t end up with a bunch of problems to deal with.
So 1) can I just go and delete the directory where SUS had been putting the updates?  2) have I missed anything that would bite me if I choose to re-enable SUS using it default directory?
    TIA
    Ron

The answer should be that you are fine.  The structure of the folder should contain a Data/html path.  Inside the html path is all the downloads.  You should be able to delete the contents of the html folder and be perfectly content.  Purging the contents used to be a troubleshooting tactic.

  • Cannot connect to ipod software update server

I have been battling for weeks to get my daughters iPod updated to iOS 5. I keep getting an error message when I try to upgrade "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server because you are not connected to the Internet." The internet and iTunes are working and I updated my iPhone from the same PC with no issues.
    I am running Win 7 x64
I have worked through all the solutions have found on the forums including:
    1) Ensure that the local area connection is set toautomatically discover settings
    2) flush the DNS cache
    3) Change the "Windows live family safety settings for her account to unrestricted"
    4) Removee "Windows live family safety" from the PC
    5) Change her account to an admin account
    6) Temporarily disabled AVG
    7) Remove the content of the hosts file
    8) Running iTunes as an administrator explicitly
    9) Temporarily disabled the windows firewall.
There have been many reboots in this sequence.
iTunes diagnostics gives the following (while running iTunes as administratir, with AVG disabled and the windows firewall disabled, and her account as administrator) - The thing that looks wrong to me is that there appears to be no active connection identified, trouble is the network is working so what is going on? Any help gratefully recieved.

  • Can't connect to internal Software Update Server

    Greetings All,
I just upgraded my XServer from Tiger to Leopard. Before the upgrade, I was using the server as a Software Update Server pushing all updates to Tiger clients. Now after upgrading to Leopard and installing the Software Update Service, it seems that my Leopard (haven't tried Tiger) clients are not able to connect to it internally - they go straight to Apple. I started the service and configured the client with:
    defaults write com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURL http://10.0.1.249:8088/
But it seems to not work. Other question is, will Tiger clients be able to connect to the Leopard server for OS updates? Thanks in advance,
    -andy-

I've got two 10.5.4 servers (one upgraded throughout the 10.5 life-cycle and one freshly installed at 10.5.1 and combo-updated) and I've never (!!) been able to get them to connect to my Software Update Server (SUS). 10.4 clients can connect and indicate the domain in the SoftwareUpdate title bar. I can copy and paste the same command I make 10.4 clients connect into each 10.5 box I have and none of them will resolve. They all default back to Apple's servers.
When I run "defaults read com.apple.SoftwareUpdate" I get the proper domain listed and it looks just like 10.4 client's responses. No 10.5 clients or servers will attach to my SUS. Why do 10.4 clients and servers? I even recently upgrade the SUS from 10.4.11 to 10.5.4 and Tiger clients still work, 10.5's do not.

  • OS 1.4 software update server and other versions of OS X

Quick question: Is it possible to have a 10.4.x software update server provide software updates to clients running 10.3, 10.5, etc?

    Hi
Software Update service supports only pkm.en file types, recognized only by
Mac OS X v10.4 and later.
Page 76 System Imaging and Software Update Admin Manual 10.5 available from here:
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/SystemImaging_and_SW_Update_Adminv10.5.pdf
So yes to 10.4 and 10.5 clients but not 10.3.

  • Software for HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP is not currently available from the Software Update server.

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion, and found that I could no longer print to  my HP CM1312nfi.
This is usually a problem with HP at every upgrade, but this time, they appear to have offloaded the driver download process to Apple.
My printer is connected wirelessly through a time capsule by IP address—the physical, not the virtual, e.g: 169.254.xx.xx instead of 10.0.1.x.
When I try to download the driver by bonjour or IP, I get the following error message:
Can't install the software for the Hewlett-Packard HP Color LaserJet CM1312nfi MFP because it is not currently available from the Software Update server.
Is this truly a Software Update server error, and if so, any clue when it will be resolved?
I am able to print with the generic driver as of now, but fax and scan capabilites are gone. The add fax dialog  lists no devices.
Scanning is not supported on my printer model with the Hewlett Packard Print 2.12 driver. Will support be forthcoming, or did Mountain Lion brick my scanner?
Thanks for your time and attention.

Of course, once I posted this, I tried again and downloaded the driver without issue.
My second question still stands, however:
Scanning is not supported on my printer model with the Hewlett Packard Print 2.12 driver. Will support be forthcoming, or did Mountain Lion brick my scanner?

  • Software Update Server is Unavailable

I'm not going to pretend to know what I'm talking about, someone gave me my Bold for free and until now I've only used it to text/call. I was trying to get into the BlackBerry World app thing but when I click on it, a message pops up saying "App World requires the latest version of BlackBerry ID" with a close option and an update option. After clicking "Update" I always receive a message saying "Sorry, the software update server is unavailable. Please try again." with 2 options of close and retry. I click retry and it never does anything or it will say 0% and that's it. I've seen posts from people with similar problems and I've tried rebooting/taking the battery out as well as going through settings and trying to figure that out. I am connected to Wifi and I have a prepay monthly type of plan with data (which I literally have never used) so that shouldn't be a problem at all. Any suggestions?

Hi and Welcome to the Community!
First off, there is more to do...refer:
Article ID: KB05099 Steps to take before selling or after buying a previously owned BlackBerry smartphone
Hopefully the prior owner completed ALL of their steps...for some of them only they can complete.
Next, you need to understand that no carriers support all BB devices...all of them only support a subset. So, there's nothing to add to your BB per se. Using the BB-specific services is a matter of your carrier providing those to you. And there are some things that must happen for them to do so.
Any BB can be used on any carrier that runs the same radio frequencies that the BB is capable of (and I've no idea if your's are such). But, to bring a BB onto a carrier network that they did not sell to you, there are several hurdles to cross:
    1) The carrier must say "yes" to the fact...they own their network and have every right to say what devices will be allowed to connect to it. If they say "no", then that's the end of it.
    2) You must be sure that your BB is properly unlocked from it's originally manufactured-for carrier...see this helpful thread for details:
    http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/General-BlackBerry-Functions-and/Unlocking-your-BlackBerry-Gu...
    3) You must get all of your voice level services functioning on the carrier, before you even try anything about data
    4) You must subscribe, from the carrier, to an adequate data plan to enable the BB-proprietary services you desire
5a) If the carrier directly supports your specific model BB, then you can proceed with registering the BB onto their network, generating the proper Service Book delivery to your BB, and proceeding to function.
5b) But, if the carrier does not directly support your specific model number of BB, then the challenges are much greater as most carrier systems will not deliver, to the BB, the necessary service books to enable the BB-proprietary data services, even if you do subscribe to them.
So, depending on all of that, your BB may or may not ever fully function on that carrier network. It can be quite tricky to accomplish, especially if 5b applies. So take a look at all of that and decide how you wish to proceed. Most folks wind up just buying a new BB if 5b applies.
Good luck and let us know!

  • Mountain Lion Software Update Server?

Let me start by saying that I am no server administrator, but was convinced that setting up a Mac Server on a MacMini would be relatively straightforward due to Apple's history and claims...
Server app. Your own mini IT department.
The Mac is famously easy to use, and so is Mac mini withOS X Server. That makes it perfect for people who’ve never run a server before, or for overtaxed IT departments. The Server app will walk you through the setup process step by step. And if you want help at any stage, just choose the Help menu or click the Next Steps button.
Well, it's not really working for me...
After two weeks of internet research and changing setting on the server (a 2011 Mac Mini with RAID 1 1TB drives - I upgraded myself) and the later Server app running on top of 10.8.2 (installed from software recovery on new drives) I have been able to get my Mac computers (a MacBook Pro and an iMac both running 10.8.2) to connect to the server and have it operate as a file server.
Several users now have their own log in details and home directories (on the server) and iTunes is operating using 'Home Share' from the server to all clients.
I've been trying to set up the Software Update Server and have, I think, successfully set up the server with the correct address and turned on the service. (I'd post a screen shot, but there is little to see: the 'button' is on and the settings are on 'Automatic'. All updates now show as 'Enabled' after about 3 days of the service running.
I am using address: http://myservernamehere.local:8088/index.sucatalog in Profile Manager on the server under 'Software update' in 'Device Groups' (I have added the computers to the group). I cannot find any other settings to adjust on the server, and have had little luck following Apple support documents.
I have reviewed this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2794 and read this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4069 and generally gone round in circles.
Can anyone explain in simple terms why the App store on the clients keeps showing an update available (Java for OS X 2013-002 1.0) and when I click on 'Update' I get the error 'Could not connect to the server.(-1004)'
I'm totally confused by this and will dispute Apple's claims that "It is perfect for people who have never run a server before".

    Hello,
I have yet to setup this up but it does not make any sense to me as to why the admin would have to login to the local computer to get updated. This defeats the whole point in my opinion. You can try giving the network user admin rights of the computer and see if it works.
    1. Login as the network user.
    2. Open System preferences and go to users and groups.
    3. Check the box "Allow user to administer this computer"
You may have to restart and then test it to see.
The only other thing I can think of trying on the local side is joining the computer to server if you already have not done this.
    Thanks,
    ebrind

  • Safari 5.1.2 not updating on SUS (Software Update Server) (Lion Server 10.7)

If you see the screenshot attached, you can see that the Software Update Server has downloaded Safari 5.1.2
However, the clients connecting to this software update server have Safari 5.1.1 and when I check for udpates it does not detect that the update for 5.1.2 is available.
When I click on Choose Version, it shows two versions of 5.1.2, but I'm unable to choose the other version of 5.1.2 to see if it works. (see 2nd screenshot)
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong and how to fix?
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Rishi

I just noticed another thread that appears to have the answer to my question above.

  • ITunes cannot restore, software update server can't be contacted

    Hello,
I received a 2008 iPod Classic hand-me-down from a friend, and wanted to format it and start using it.  I formatted the drive in windows, and now when I start iTunes (using version 10.6.3.25), I get the following message "iTunes has detected an iPod that appears to be corrupted.  You may need to restore this iPod before it can be used with iTunes.  You may also try disconnecting and reconnecting the iPod."  When I try to restore, it holds on "contacting the iPod software update server," and then tells me that the iPod software update server could not be contacted.
I have looked around for solutions, and tried quite a few of them.  I unchecked the boxes in internet options (automatically detect settings), deleted the itunespref xml file, used hostsxpert to reset the hosts file, and so on.  I still have the same problem.
So here I am, posting on the forum asking for someone's expert help.  Here is the little log that iTunes spits out for me:

Ok, I've got it all figured out, and wanted to leave a note here for posterity.  Here's what I did.
After reading all of planb77's excellent suggestions and going through the links he sent, I decided to look at other aspects of iTunes and see if the problem was not limited to restoring my iPod.  When I found that my iTunes store didn't work, I checked the forum for those issues, and found that AT&T Communication Manager was a common culprit in working with iTunes.
After 70 minutes on hold and a fruitless hour on the phone with AT&T trying to uninstall bytemobile optimization client, I left the AT&T guy insisting that it was not AT&T's problem, but rather Apple's.
I then looked further into bytemobile and iTunes, and found an elegantly simple solution, written in all caps: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3888541?start=0&tstart=0.  You'll see it there.  To spare you the link change, the advice was to uninstall iTunes 10 and everything else apple-related, download and install iTunes 9.2, find and delete the latest "itunes library.itl", and run your new iTunes.  It solved my problem of restoring my iPod, and, incidentally, allowed me to access iTunes store.  So there you have it.  Problem solved.
planb77, thanks again for your persistence.  While you didn't solve my problem, you eliminated many of the other possiblities, and led me to some other links.

  • Can't update my Iphone (the iphone software update server could not be contacted)

    Hello,
I've been trying to fix this problem by my self with no luck so I'm writing to you guys, hoping you will have the right answers.
I dropped my iPhone4 today and it turned off, when I plugged it into a charger it showed me a screen of IOS6 (which I didn't had this update updated) and when I "silde right" it wrote that I need to update it by iTunes.
So I opened ITunes while my IPhone was connected that it automatically tried to update it as needed, after 20 seconds of loading I get this error massage:
"the iPhone software update server could not be contacted"
I've tried everything; turning off firewall, update my AntiVirus, restarting my router, restarting pc while IPhone not\connected, changed usb exist (using a back exit atm),changing usb cable and even reinstalled my iTunes (yes, my iTunes is up to date), although when I tried to update my itunes it gives me this error:
"The iTunes update server could not be connacted. Please chek your Internet connection, or try again later. " but I don't think it's related but worth to mention it.
    My iPhone is NOT jailbreaked
please help me to fix this problem,
    Thanks In Advnace.

    Error 20, 21, 23, 26, 28, 29, 34, 36, 37, 40
These errors typically occur when security software interferes with the restore and update process. FollowTroubleshooting security software issues to resolve this issue. In rare cases, these errors may be a hardware issue. If the errors persist on another computer, the device may need service.
Also, check your hosts file to verify that it's not blocking iTunes from communicating with the update server. See iTunes: Advanced iTunes Store troubleshooting—follow steps under the heading Blocked by configuration (Mac OS X / Windows) > Rebuild network information > Mac OS X > The hosts file may also be blocking the iTunes Store. If you have software used to perform unauthorized modifications to the iOS device, uninstall this software prior to editing the hosts file to prevent that software from automatically modifying the hosts file again on restart.

  • ITunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet...???

    Ok I’m completely lost here....
I’m running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3 (Build 2600), I updated iTunes to 11.0.2.25 and some other updates for windows last night on my laptop. I try connecting to download the iOS 6.1.2 update for my iPhone 4 and my iPhone 5 via iTunes. I am getting this message for both "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet. Make sure your internet connection is active and try again." Everything was fine with connecting prior to running these updates because I downloaded the 6.1 update with no problems when it came out.
What I have done so far with which has made no difference:
    Checked my internet connection
    Changed my internet connection
Signed out of iTunes and then signed back in
Ran diagnostics via iTunes, comes back with: Network interfaces verified- Internet connection failed- Secure link to iTunes store verified
Connection attempt to Apple web site was successful.
Connection attempt to browsing iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to purchasing from iTunes Store was successful.
Connection attempt to iPhone activation server was successful.
Connection attempt to firmware update server was successful.
Connection attempt to Gracenote server was successful.
Last successful iTunes Store access was 2013-02-20 20:40:48.
Disabled firewall, spy sweeper, virus scanner
    start>run>cmd> typed "netsh winsock reset"
    Rebooted
Checked the parental controls in iTunes
    Start>control panel>internet options>connections tab> lan settings> selected the "automatically detect settings"
    Deleted iTunes and reinstalled iTunes
When I would "ping gs.apple.com" it would come back with "request timed out" no matter what internet connection I was on, so I went into the hosts file  start>my computer>(C:)>WINDOWS>system32>drivers>ect>HOSTS and added  "#     127.0.0.1     gs.apple.com". Now it will ping gs.apple.com just fine but still comes up with the "iTunes could not contact the iPhone software update server because you are not connected to the internet" message in iTunes when i try to download the update.
If anyone can come up with any ideas that I haven’t tried, please let me know. This is keeping me back from updating both of my phones along with if anything should ever happen to them; restores as well.

im computer is connected i can go to the apple store through itunes but when i plug my phone in i keep getting that alert... i plugged my phone in to update it after the apple loaded the itunes icon and a usb showed up.

  • "Can't install the software for the HP Officejet 6300 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server" when I try to install a HP 6300 printer.

    Hi there
I am trying to install a HP 6300 printer. I can see it when I look to install initially. Then click on installa nd the process starts and I get a message saying it is searching for the software. However after 20 seconds or so I get the message: Can't install the software for the HP Officejet 6300 series because it is not currently available from the Software Update server. This has happned over and over. I have updated the OSx and am 10.8.5. It works on my Mac Book Pro and did once work on the Mac Book Air but stopped so I unistalled and tried to reintsall but no joy. How can i gte the right drivers onto the laptop so that the seach finds them and connects the printer that it already sees?
    Many thanks
    Rob

  • ITunes could not contact the iPod software update server

I am a teacher managing many iPod touches.
I am trying to update the ipod software to version 3.1.3 but using my macbook (10.5.8) I cannot reach the update server and a I get the following error - "iTunes could not contact the iPod software update server". I am connected to the internet, I can access the iTunes store no problem.
Using my windows XP laptop I can access the update server and I am using the same network ID and the same proxy settings.
    Any ideas?

Forget the wireless modem part of the question. I tried plugging directly into my pc and still have the same problem...very frustrating!

  • "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet" Help?

Hello all, new to the forums.
I've been recieving the error message "itunes could not contact the ipod software update server because you are not connected to the internet". This problem didn't occur at all for the past 2 years of using itunes.
I've already scanned through numerous websites and forums for help, but none of them worked.
This  set of instructions resulted in no change to any of the problems, though iTunes lists that as the supposed solution.
    # Open Internet Options from control panel.
    # Click the Connections tab.
    # Click the LAN Settings button.
    # Select the Automatically detect settings checkbox.
Others include installing IE7, which that didn't work either.
    Can anyone help?
