Software updates killed turbo tax?

Hello.
I've been using Turbo Tax with no issues for several weeks on my PowerBook running 10.3.9. All was good. OS X and Turbo Tax itself are both updated with all the latest patches. No problems running anything I've ever tried to run. Even did my taxes early this year...
Last night Software Update found new versions of iTunes and QuickTime to install, so I let it go ahead and do so. This seems to have been my mistake.
After the successful installation and restart I decided to do some more tax related work. However, now Turbo Tax won't run.
From the console log, each time Turbo Tax starts (and immediately exits) I see this:
Error locating symbol - dlcompat: Symbol "_JVTDecoOpen" not found
A Google search and a search on Apple's site yielded no hits. I knew I was in trouble.
Assuming that somehow Turbo Tax had become corrupted, I de-installed and completely re-installed from scratch (from the known good CD).
Same problem.
Error locating symbol - dlcompat: Symbol "_JVTDecoOpen" not found
I contacted Intuit support and they suggested re-installation of Turbo Tax - which I'd already done.
So the only changes (that I'm aware of) between a working Turbo Tax and a "broken" Turbo Tax were the Apple updates to iTunes (7.1) and QuickTime (7.1.5).
I can't explain how these changes would break seemingly unrelated software, but I've seen stranger things.
I've done a disk permissions repair, and that cleaned up a few things - but made no change for the problem at hand. I've scanned the drive looking for anything related to the error and turned up nothing. I made sure that Turbo Tax was completely wiped (every associated file) before re-installing. I don't know enough about the dlcompat routines to do any debugging, or to even guess what it's trying to do.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

  • Software update killed Quicktime!

I've been running 10.3.9 for so long now and everything was fine until I ran Software Update and upgraded to Quicktime 7.1.3. Now Quicktime won't work, iTunes won't work and even my old copy of Quicktime 6.5.2 (which I have Pro enabled on) won't work either. Does anyone know what happened or what I can do to fix it? advTHANKSance

    G5 2x2   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Thanks for your reply. I had already updated to QT 7 and moved QT6.5.2 to a safe folder elsewhere on the drive so as not to lose my Pro capabilities. Since running SU neither version will boot up. I get the beach-ball for a few seconds, then the black triangle appears in the dock next to the QT icon, but I never get QT menus. I have to Force-Quit QT, although strangely, the list in the Force-Quit window doesn't show "Not Responding" next to QT as I would expect. Also, QT7.1.3 works as a plug-in in my Web Browsers, just not as an app on the computer.
I hope this info can help you figure out what I need to do to fix it. Thanks again!

  • A freeze during software update killed brand new Macbook Pro?

I have only had this computer for about 2.5-3 weeks, and it came with Lion. I was installing the recommended software update (attached to power like recommended), and the update froze about 10% from being finished (the bar did not move for 20 minutes). I pushed the power button to restart it, but ever since then, it won't restart; it only will show the Apple screen, and then I hear the hard drive shut down while the circle is still spinning. I tried booting it up holding down cmd-S, to see what the text would say, and it tells me that the bootstrapper has crashed. I am able to get to the recovery pane by booting with cmd-R, which is how I am on the internet, but I can't access my hard drive at all.
I did just do a time machine backup yesterday, but I have installed the entire Adobe Master Collection since then (which took FOREVER), and I was at school all day doing work, so I have quite a bit of important stuff I'd rather not lose if I can help it.
Any suggestions? I think this computer is possessed...I have had so many problems with it since Day 1.

You do know that Apple has a 14 day No Questions Asked return policy?
So you should of taken it back when you have the first problems. Now you are past that date but you still may be able to return it for a replacement that actually works as it should. The only way to tell is to take it back to where you bought it and explain all the problems you have had, including that it will not boot after doing this latest update, and ask for an exchange for a new unit that will work correctly.
    Good Luck.

  • Software update killed Eudora - I cannot send mail now.  ???????

Software update told me that I should download and install a new security update, and being the compliant soul that I am, I complied. Big mistake. Mac.com will not allow me to send email from Eudora. I have changed nothing. The SMTP Server in Eudora prefs is still smtp.mac.com. I can still get my mail.
    Any ideas?

Thanks for the information. I did the permissions repair with no improvement, but have not gone beyond that because...

  • Software update killed my Mac!

I was prompted to do a software update, and I installed itunes 7.02, some java stuff and I think a backup. I don't remember exactly what it was.
    Anyway,
After update I needed to restart my computer. Now when it starts up it goes up through the start up, through the blue screen where the bar scrolls through. And then when it should show my desktop....nothing.
I have a cursor arrow, but nothing to point to. Just a blue screen.
What happened? How do I fix this?

It is a good idea to start Disk Utility and repair disk permissions, verify the disk, and make a backup copy of your boot drive before you install any OS or software updates.
Chances are, this problem is a coincidence though. Can you boot off the disc that came with your Mac? If so, try running the repair disk feature in Disk Utility to see if that fixes the problem.

  • Software update killed my iPod

It's a video iPod, 30gb. It was working great. Connected to iTunes, which came up with a box saying, there's a new update, do you want it? I agreed, it started downloading. Screen on the iPod was black with a white apple in the middle, and a status bar across the bottom. When the status bar got to about half full, it just froze--and stayed that way for about 8 hours. I couldn't get it to turn on or off, or do anything at all. I restarted my computer, disconnected and reconnected the iPod--nothing. And it wasn't showing up in iTunes, either.
So, I did the reset. Toggled the hold switch, held down menu and select. After maybe half a minute, the screen went blank. Now, won't start up at all, no matter what I do. I've followed every troubleshooting guide on the Apple site, but nothing works. iPod doesn't show up in iTunes or anywhere on the computer (Windows XP, by the way) and will not turn on at all.
    Help me? Please?

I had a similar problem after accepting an ipod software update on 1/4/08. Mine began the restart, with the progress bar appearing on the ipod screen. It did go all the way across, but then my ipod began restarting itself over and over again. It kept doing this when I disconnected from the PC, tried connecting to another pc, and tried plugging in to an electrical outlet. I finally got it to start by following the "put into disk mode" instructions (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651). I did have to press the "select" and "play" buttons immediately once the logo appeared after I pressed the "menu" and "select" buttons. Once in disk mode I reset the ipod and it's working fine now. Hope this helps.

  • Software update killed my ipad. how can i get old version back?

Software update7.1.2 killed my ipad - can i get old version back?

    You can't downgrade the iOS.
Did you get an error message or something displayed on the screen?
You need to provide more info than "killed" if you want an answer.

  • Software Update killed my Airport Express!

Turned on my MBP today and left the room for just a minute. When I returned, the screen had a message saying (roughly):
"Your Airport software has been successfully updated".
I didn't ask for it to be updated, and I certainly did not click on any "OK" button giving it permission. Ever since, I can't get to the internet via my Airport Express. I've tried everything. Unplugged and plugged, left it unplugged for an hour and still won't light green. I tried every reset including the full "Factory Default" reset, and still it wont come on green.
I don't know what else to try. Apple wont talk to me without hitting my credit card for 50 bucks first, which strikes me as unfair. There should at least be a way to get someone to read an email of my problem and decide if there's any extenuating circumstances. I don't see how this can be my fault.
If I'm missing something here, and anyone has any suggestions, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks,
    Steve Nathan

It sounds as though I am not the only one having problems with the Airport Extreme lately. I was running without any problems until about a week ago. For some reason or other I lost connection to the Airport and internet. I ran diagnostics and any other reboot until I finally had to reset the Airport to the factory settings by pushing/holding the button on the back. It has now happened every day this week. After I reset and rebuild my network the next day it's gone.
I'm running 7.4.1 firmware after reconfiguring--There are earlier versions listed so I don't know whether or not to give them a try.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm getting really tired of resetting.

  • Software update killed my battery on iphone 5 :(((

I just updated my iphone 5 to the new software and I am lucky if the battery even reaches 5-6 hours
Apple please fix this soon :(

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new).  Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

  • Software update for n70 killed my phone

hy,i have a n70 from italy.now i am in romania.i tryed to update my n70 but after i did that the software update killed my phone.why?when it powers on hy remain with a blank white display.the batery was fully charged with the charger in the phonewhy?is ther enything i can do?please help me.thanks

First remove the battery for 5 minutes, reconnect the battery, connect it to your pc and run the updater again. Leave it for a few minutes and it should go into recovery mode.
If not disconnect it and try a hard reset.
    Hard reset:
    1. Switch off the phone.
    2. Hold down the following three buttons: Green (the call answer button), * button, and '3' button.
    3. While holding these buttons, press the power button and switch on the phone.
    4. Release when the phone shows the nokia logo or shows other signs of life like the language selection screen.
If that fails to fix it try the advice offered in this post by drummer27:
    /discussions/board/message?board.id=swupdate&message.id=14152#M14152
If that still fails then the last option is to take the phone to a nokia care point.

  • HT1444 how do I upgrade from Mac OS 10.5.8 to later versions so new software like turbo tax will work

how do I upgrade from Mac OS 10.5.8 to later versions so new software like turbo tax will work?

Upgrade Paths to Snow Leopard, Lion, and/or Mountain Lion
You can upgrade to Mountain Lion from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mountain Lion can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $19.99. To access the App Store you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or later installed.
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You must purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s MobileMe service; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mountain Lion, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion by contacting Customer Service: Contacting Apple for support and service - this includes international calling numbers. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
    Upgrading to Mountain Lion
To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
OS X Mountain Lion - System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
             7. Xserve (Early 2009)
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
For a complete How-To introduction from Apple see Upgrade to OS X Mountain Lion.

  • Epson printer software update 2.14 killed my printer

On Mac OS X 10.7.5  - after epson printer software update 2.14 my 9890 started printing images "smeared" out of register across the page.
Over an hour with Epson tech ended with trashing the /Library/Printers/EPSON folder and downgrading to the previous driver. This fixed the 9890 but left my R1900 disabled. R1900 software is no longer available as a stand-alone install - only through Sofware Update. But that will kill my 9890.
Epson tech said it's Apple's fault and they need to fix it.
    Apple, where's the fix?

I had the same problem and after untold hours working with Apple & Epson we got to the problem with the Apple software update 2.14.  I was told I had to decide if I wanted my 9900 to work or my office printer (Workforce 610) to work. I was incredulous that I would be forced to make this choice but of course chose to get my 9900 back up and running.  This  fix was given to me 3 weeks ago tomorrow and we still no resolution from Apple / Epson?  Are you kidding me? I am considering throwing my Epson 610 in the trash and buying another brand of office printer so I will have no conflict with my 9900. Seems like a pretty stupid solution I must admit.
I called Epson back again on Friday and got a horrible run-around. The guy from the Pro Graphics group (techs for the professional series printers) insisited I needed to talk to the consumer printers group. Once I got to them it was clear they had no clue about this issue. I left the phone totally frustrated and angry.  I ended up emailing a very capable guy from the Pro Graphics group I had worked with 3 weeks ago and he was nice enough to reply. The answer however was there is still no fix to the Apple update.  At t his point I am not sure how to know if the update has been fixed. The message I get from Epson is just keep checking back. The problem is that it seems few at Epson are aware of the problem so you have to go through a long explanation only to hope  you find someone that is aware.
Nothing like running a printing company and telling your customers you cannot print their invoice because your printer doesn't work!  Thanks Apple for the quick fix on this!
