Software Updates Management

I'm trying to plan for Software Updates. I've got the Software Update Point all setup, configured and testing fine. I'm looking to find out what's the best way to manage the organization of the updates themselves.
How do you guys group/deploy them, do you make folders for organizational purposes, and if so, what sorts of structures do you use?
Do you separate them out by product, or deploy in large groups based on other properties?

I understand. I knew about the folders being purely organizational, not not functional, I think it helps sooth the organization freak inside. I think my biggest concern was the size of the Software Update Package. I think that I had an irrational
fear that the wrong updates would get installed on the wrong products if they were deployed in chucks, but I guess the WUA handles that part. I just have one last question. I'm pretty sure I know the answer, but, when a client downloads the updates, does it
download the whole software update package to update from, or does it only download the updates from the package?
It only downloads the update content that it requires.

  • SCCM 2012 Software Update Management for Windows Servers and how to automatic set SCOM maintenance mode?

    Hi,
We planning to go one level higher to automat and have more dynamic Software Update Management for Windows Servers. We have SCCM 2012 R2, SCOM 2012 R2 and SCO 2012 R2.
Our plan is to pur server in an AD-Group to get Update Schedule, from the servers will be importet to an Collection for Automatic Update and reboot. If I understand Everything right SCOM can't read AD-Group and put then in an Schedule maintenance mode. SCOM
can read reg value as exempel.
IS there any smar way to make the SCOM Maintenance Mode Schedule dynamic?
    I found this
    http://www.scom2k7.com/scom-2012-maintenance-mode-scheduler/?

You could use Orchestrator to put the servers from a specific collection, or AD group, in maintenance mode in SCOM. For an example see:

  • Software Update Management

I have been looking around on the forums and i cant seam to find anything about this issue (though its probbaly me not looking hard enough) i wish to manage software update on my mac clients i wish to make all the clients have the software update prefs set to work in the background and be updated daily, but i cant seam to find a way of doing this from the server to the clients, i dont want to go around to all the clients and set this so is there another way
    best wishes
    Rob

    Hi
As well as using the Software Update Service etc, that is another way of doing it. The original post asked this:
i wish to make all the clients have the software update
prefs set to work in the background and be updated daily
but i cant seam to find a way of doing this from the server
to the clients, i dont want to go around to all the clients
and set this so is there another way
You cant do this using SUS or managed preferences. You can schedule an update using ARD’s at a defined times on specific computers but it won’t run in the background.

Any idea what could be wrong?
    Thanks,
    Sven

SUM checks the libc version by parsing the output of 'ldd --version'.
The java code looks like this:
    String[] parsedOutput = getCommandOutput("ldd", new ValueIF[] { new StringValue("--version") }).split("libc\\) ");
       if (parsedOutput.length > 1) {
       this.cLibraryVersion = parsedOutput[1];
      } else {
       throw new DetermineOSException("msg.tools.sysInfo.0078");
With newer releases of libc, the output of ldd --version no longer contains a string matching the pattern "libc\\) ", so this fails.
    A rather quick-and-dirty workaround:
    - rename the ldd executable to ldd.exe
    - create the following shell script named ldd in /usr/bin:
    #!/bin/sh
    if [ $1 == "--version" ] ; then
      echo "libc) 2.17"
    else
      /usr/bin/ldd.exe $@
    fi
As SUM ignores the PATH variable it is not possible to place the modified ldd into some other directory.

    Sebastian

  • SharePoint Server 2013 farm software updates not available in SCCM

At my current customer, we are currently switching over to SCCM for all Software Update Management.
For now, the only issue we are experiencing is that we do not receive SharePoint updates on our SharePoint Server 2013 farm. With WSUS we can detect these, but they are not listed in SCCM. We sync directly with Windows Update.
It are specifically the updates that are marked as "farm-deployment", as you can see in example in this image.:
    http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-gI8Ew7RlY0g/VPqM0QUn6oI/AAAAAAAAIDQ/S1Ufp0x-mSU/s1600/windows%2Bupdate%2Bincludes%2Bsharepoint%2B2013%2Bpatches.png
In the SUP properties, we have enabled the Office 2013 product and all classifications besides "Tools".
    Am I missing something?

I could see these SharePoint updates in my SCCM console.
N.B. the question was about "farm-deployment" updates specifically.
Can you please post a screen-shot showing these updates in the SCCM-console?
    This is from WSUS:

  • Update showing up in "Compliance 5 - Specific Computer" Report even after removing the update from the Software Update before creating Group and Package

So I've created a Software Update Group and I did NOT want anything in there dealing with Internet Explorer 11 since the organization is currently stuck at using 10 as the highest. So I made sure that Internet Explorer was NOT in the list and then I deployed
    the package.
After running my Overall Compliance report it shows that the systems are compliant, but when I view the "Compliance 5 - Specific Computer" I see that "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" is listed in the report.
This is just a testing phase right now and I have not created a WSUS like Domain level GPO. I understand that the SCCM client creates a local policy on the clients for the location of the Software Update Point (Specify
Intranet Microsoft update service location), but the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy is set to Not Configured, which it looks like when this
is set, the "Install updates automatically (recommended)" at 3AM is the default.
Is the reason why the "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" update is showing up in the list due to the fact that the "Configure
Automatic Updates" policy is set to Not Configured
and therefore it is still reaching out to check Windows Update online?
So, if I do create a Domain level GPO to Disable the "Configure
Automatic Updates" policy, then the "Internet Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" update would not show up in the "Compliance 5 - Specific Computer" report?
By the way, I have a Software Update Maintenance Window configured for the hours of 1AM-4AM so the 3AM default time falls within this time frame, therefore, I am assuming the SCCM 2012 client will not allow the Windows Update Agent to install the "Internet
Explorer 11 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems" update, even though it has detected it is "Required".
    Thanks

But, don't you need a Deployment Package in order to deploy the Software Update Group? The Software Update Group uses the downloaded updates contained in the Deployment Package located in, wherever the Package Source is, right?
One more quick question that you will know right off hand, because, well, you just will I'm sure.
No. The software update group really has nothing to do with any update packages. The update group assigns updates to clients and in turn clients use update packages to download assign and applicable updates from. There is no connection between the two though
as the client can download an update from any available update package. Thus, it's more than possible to updates in an update package that are not in any update groups and it is also possible for an update to be in an update group without being in any update
    package.
If the "Configure Automatic Updates" policy is set to "Not Configured" and since this keeps the 3AM Automatic Updates default, if I was to remove the Software Update Maintenance Window from being between 1AM-4AM, will the WUA agent install updates
at 3AM, or no because the SCCM 2012 client still manages and oversees it and basically blocks that from occurring?
No, ConfigMgr does not in any way block the WUA; however, the WUA can only autonomously install updates it downloads directly from WSUS. Thus, since there are no updates approved or downloaded in your WSUS instance, there's nothing for it to download and
install. If you happen to actually be going into WSUS and approving updates (which you should not be doing as its unsupported), then yes, it actually would install updates -- this is outside of ConfigMgr's control though. Generally, disabling the WUA via a
GPO is the recommended to prevent any accidental installations or reboots (as the WUA wil also check for initiate pending reboots outside of ConfigMgr).

  • SCCM deployment Win7 with multi language pack & software update languages

In our company we have a running SCCM infrastructure and deploy Windows 7 x64 (en) with all language packs. Now we integrate the software updates management process into SCCM.
My question is: Do we need to download and synchronize the software updates in all available languages or is English enough?
Thank you very much for your support!

    Hi,
We don’t suggest deploying all language packages in one time. You may deploy default language and let users choose which language
package to install in Windows Update to save the network traffic.

Whenever I try to download an app (from CD or .pkg) It boots up to the liscence agreement then quits unexpectently before I get a chance to choose where to put the file. The software update manager quits before it finishes checking for updates.
    What can I do?
    PowerBook 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
By crash do you mean the dialog of "reopen, report to Apple" comes up?
Do you mean you are getting a spinning beachball?
Do you mean the cursor freezes as a pointer and is unable to move for more than 5 minutes?
Caches, RAM, third party peripherals with incompatible drivers, preferences, and permissions (the ones repaired by Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility) can be contributing factors in crashes such as the ones above.
Are you connected via dialup or high speed?
Are you using Internet Cleanup or Speed Download, or other similar internet transfer third party utility?
Software Update works fine in 10.4.3. It is more than likely one of the above contributing factors. If you need help isolating one of those potential factors, please ask.
P.S. I'm not from Apple but have seen similar issues resolved by isolating the above causes in several different versions of Mac OS X.

While viewing the updates that are a member of the software updates group, either sort by the "Expired" column or filter by Expired = Yex.  Select all expired updates, right click, and select 'Edit Membership".  Uncheck the checkbox for the software
update groups you are trying to remove them from.
    > *I seem to remember there was somewhere an option that mentioned expired
This option has to do with how long 'superseded' updates will remain available for deployment.  You can set under Administration > Site Configuration > Sites.  Right click on your site and select Configure Site Components > Software Update
Point.  The setting is on the "Supersedence Rules" tab.
However, Microsoft will also directly expire updates from time to time as well.  In general, this is normal and something you shouldn't worry about managing.  When the update has been expired by Microsoft, it is something you couldn't install even
by going to Windows Update, so you shouldn't worry trying to deploy them.  Instead, deploy the current updates instead of superseded ones.
    >How can I automate this (not automatically apply but using manually which updates to use and deploy at times I choose)?
For organizations with very simple Software Update processes, you could use an Automatic Deployment Rule to select updates based on a criteria, download the content to a deployment package, add the updates to a software update group, and create a deployment
to a collection.  That deployment can be 'available' and not required if you plan to hand install them later.
This documentation gives you an overview of how all the Software Update Management features work:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg682168.aspx#BKMK_DeploymentWorkflows
And this blog post gives an example of using an ADR:

  • Software updates - client behaviour

I deployed SUP role and clients in test collection I deployed updates to got their updates. However I noticed two "weird" things on client machines (I am talking about test environment since I am learning SCCM 2012 R2):
Update settings in Control Panel - Windows Update are not grayed-out (in production I have WSUS server and GPO pointing clients to WSUS and these settings are grayed-out - I do not have SCCM in production)
In Software Center user has complete look at update process but e.g. if user picks some update that has been installed and requires restart, in lower-right corner there is button RESTART - I did not try but I assume user (me) could have pressed this
button and in doing so installation of remaining updates would have been interrupted
How to troubleshoot this? I took a look at software updates client settings and I did not notice any settings related to problems I depicted above. In my opinion update settings should have been grayed-out and RESTART button should not have been available before
all updates are installed - then RESTART is inevitable action.

Changes to those settings won't prevent the ConfigMgr client from triggering the WUA agent for the configured scans and installations. If you want to prevent access to those features you can use GPOs.
For a nice blog series about software updates and GPOs, see the following links (it's written for ConfigMgr 2007, but still works the same in ConfigMgr 2012):

I have three iPhone 4 models purchased in late 2010 (for my family) that all share the same iTunes account for access to apps and music, but each phone/user still has his/her custom contact list, email accts, and select lists of apps and music from the one iTunes acct library.  The problem is I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct. What is the best solution to manage these devices for software updates, apps? This is probably a common problem with families wanting to share apps and music without realizing the issues created by this approach. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates. The problem would be how to keep all the apps, etc from being deleted off the second and third phones that were originally loaded from the one iTunes acct. Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. Hopefully, someone out there can help me??  Please?

I have three iPhone 4 models purchased in late 2010 (for my family) that all share the same iTunes account for access to apps and music, but each phone/user still has his/her custom contact list, email accts, and select lists of apps and music from the one iTunes acct library.  The problem is I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct. • Desktop Manager asks for "insert BB device software updater disk"

When open DM (v 5.0) a message "insert BB device software updater disk" for a file named "ApploaderWebSL-Upgrade[1].msi". I cant find it....help needed....
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

OK. Can you uninstall 5.0 first. Next download and save the DM 5.0 exe file somewhere on your computer. Instead of double-clicking the file to install it, first extract the contents of the file to a folder on your computer. You can use any zipping program (i.e.. Winzip, Winrar, 7-zip) to right click the EXE file and choose Extract To. On my computer I created a folder called "Desktop Manager" and extracted all of the contents into that. Now you can go into the folder that contains the extracted contents and run the "BlackBerrySetup.exe" file to install the software.
If you just double click on the EXE file then the software extracts all required files to a temporary folder on your computer. After the installation is complete then the temporary files get deleted. So the main benefit to doing it above is that all of the installation files will always be located in a folder on your computer. So if you ever have to reinstall, repair, or find an MSI file that the program needs you don't have to download the software again.
Let me know if that works out.

  • ITouch software updates/manually manage music and videos

Since I don't conventionally sync itunes and itouch, but manually manage my playlists and media, I'm beginning to understand that updating the ipod software means having to manually create my playlists again once the software resets to factory settings. Did I miss something in the update process that would have bypassed the factory reset? or am I obligated to join the masses who sync.
    Others who suffer this indignity?
    Thanks.

The software updates don't always restore the iPod, and there does not seem to be any user-control over that.
If you manage things manually, you're living dangerously if you're putting all your work into building playlist just on the iPod. You really ought to build the playlists in iTunes, then drag and drop them to the iPod. That way, in case you have to restore your iPod for any reason, you can easily replicate what you previously had on there. Note that this is not the same as auto-sync; you're still managing things manually but doing all the creating within iTunes so that you have a backup.

  • Disable SCCM management of Software Updates

    Hi,
We are looking at installing the SCCM 2012 R2 client on some of our servers, however, the server managers are not pleased with the prospect of us managing the updates on those servers.  To work around this I have created a Client Settings policy which
disables management of Software Updates by SCCM, but when I apply that policy, the client is still disabling access to Windows Updates from the control panel.  Is there a way to allow the client to be installed but still allow the client machines the
ability to connect to Windows Update?
    Thanks
    John

True enough.  The WMI filtering is a good idea, and I like the fact that the GPO "wins" and is reapplied, so I can rely on those settings being what we want them to be. The only other hurdle is the fact that since these servers are independently
updated, I'm thinking we're going to see as many different maintenance windows/update policies/update product lists as there are servers, and of course each server admin will want to keep the update procedures exactly as they are now.  The need for this
feature is very real, and I have to say I'm surprised it isn't currently offered in the 2012 product.  Patching servers is something that a lot of sysadmins shy away from, but that doesn't mean we cant make use of many of the other SCCM features on them.
