Software Updates using distribution points

Hi,
I have primary site and configured all settings well. Also I installed SUP on the primary site. I have 3 other sites with slow connection. I need to plan SU for them. is it better to create secondary site on the 3 sites or Distribution points will be
enough for them?

I agree with Wally. Adding 3 Seconday Sites with a SUP, will add both administrative overhead and make the installation more complex.
As a general rule, I always recomend to go with the simple solution. Then you can always "upgrade" one or more of the sites if you later finds out that you need to.

How do you automatically run software update using ARD?

Is there a way to automate running software update and downloading all updates using ARD? My current option is to log into each machine and do it manually. (I am also using a OSX server 10.6 if that helps.)

Use the the Send UNIX Command option. There's a template in the Miscellaneous section to have the workstations download and install updates; run it as the root user in the Send Command as field so you don't have to worry about a user being logged into each workstation. You can set the command as a task to run on a schedule if you wish.
Since each workstation will download each update, it's most efficient if you can run a Software Update Server and point your workstations to that instead of directly to Apple. Then you don't have multiple downloads taking up your Internet bandwidth. If you have on a few workstations and/or a really big pipe to the Internet, that may not be a concern for you.

How would I rollback or remove a problematic software update using SCCM 2012?
Primarily I'm thinking these patches would be Windows Vista/7/8 OS patches, but would include other Microsoft updates as well (eg. Office, etc.).

You need to uninstall it using software distribution like a package/program, here is a script that can help you with the uninstallation.

DP use by clients is all about your boundaries. Simply adjust your boundary groups so that the good "DP" is referenced in the boundary group defining the boundaries for the alternate location.

Apple Software Update error- "Entry Point not found"

I have had Apple Software Update/ iTunes on my PC for over 4 years. Today, randomly, when I went to update iTunes to the new 10.5 version, Software Update did not prompt me to update. That was odd, but I didn't realize anything was amiss yet at this point.
In iTunes, I went Help > Check for Updates which indicated the new version was downloaded. When promted whether I'd like to update, I hit yes, which even more oddly took me to apple.com to download iTunes all over again. (Normally, updates download from within iTunes and it's an update, not a full hour-long re-download.)
I didn't want to redownload iTunes (what would happen to all of my previously downloaded apps and music, set playlists?) so I opened Software Update, and got the following error message:
SoftwareUpdate.exe - Entry Point Not Found
The procedure entry point ?CreateProductsFromXML@CSUCatalogObject@@QAEXP6AIPAXIIJ@ZOIV?@CStringT@WV?$StrT raitMFC@WV?ChTraitsCRT@W@ATL@@@@@ATL@@@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library SoftwareUpdateFiles.dll
Strange, right?
So my questions.
1.) Does anyone know why Apple Software Update would suddenly get errors? I've used it recently (this past weekend?) and everything was fine.
2.) Is there a way to fix Software Update, since I'll surely need it in the future.
3.) In the meantime, should I proceed with re-downloading the full version of iTunes again, and will it mess up anything I currently have in my iTunes library? Would I need to back it up or do anything to help ensure there are no further problems?

Well... after I posted this, some info from other posts came up and I found the answer!
In case anyone has the same issue that runs across this... this worked for me perfectly.

Nokia E52 dead after software update using Nokia S...

I bought my Nokia E52 the day before yesterday. It is an early model (arrived at the store i September). But it worked fine, except for the bluetooth connection.
I tried to update the software using Nokia Software Updater via the USB cable. But it lost connection (I didn't touch the cable nor the phone at the time, and the computer was workning fine). After that I tried it again a couple of time, but it lost connection. It seems the USB-micro connecter on the phone is defective.
Finally its seemed to worked, but after a long period of time it lost connection again and this time the phone was dead. The computer couldn't find it when I connected the USB cable and the screen was dead, nothing happend when I push the powerbutton, except it vibrated once as normal after that nothing happend.
The screen was dead, the numberpad was not lighted. I removed the battery and waited a couple of minutes and tried again. Nothing happend. I tried to reset the phone by using buttons '3', '*', 'anwesring-bottun' and powerbutton. Nothing happend.
Obvious the software update were unsuccesful but is my phone beyond repair? Is the warrenty/guarantee still valid?

Your phone will be repaired in a nokia care point. Usually they fix this problem whenever it occurs during a software update. If that key combination didn't help in your case, then it's definitely a point to go to a care point. I think it is covered by warantee but I'd advise you to call the service point just in case to check with them.

Cannot download software from second distribution point SCCM2012

I recently added a second distribution point to my SCCM 2012, I am able to replicate software over to the new server. When I go and uncheck the first
distribution point and only have the second one associated with software it cannot be downloaded. I get an error that the software cannot be found on any servers at this time. What is the proper setup to allow software to be downloaded from only the second
one and not the first one? I want to test it and make sure it will work on it's own.

How are your boundary groups configured? have you added the new DP to a boundary group so that the clients know it should use it? it sounds like that could be the issue..

Software Updates using Unix command hangs

Every time I try to do a software update to my OS 10.6.4, 10.6.8 iMacs, the process stays an/or hangs and I have to cancel it. This is the last message in the log:
Writing files… Running package scripts… Removing old files… Optimizing system for installed software… Moving items into place…
I have left it there for 24 hours and it stills never finishes. When I check an individual machine, the updates are still outstanding, except the combo 10.6.8 on the machines that are running 10.6.4
Any help on this? I am running a Snow Leopard server with the software update service and doing local updates on the machines. I have sent already a unix command to the machines to do a local update with my server ip.

If your using ARD , you should be able to send, and copy & run the installer on your client computers without needing to directly interact with the computers.
ie:
download the 10.6.8 combo updaters v1.1.dmg onto your ARD computer
double click on the dmg so your computer mounts it.
open ard
select one or more client that need to update
click on install icon from the ard toolbar (it should be right next to unix) (altertively
a dialog box will pop up asking what you want to install
click the +
select the 10.6.8 combo update v1.1.pkg from the mounted disk image
set restart after install to attempt or force restart.
click install
it's a good idea to send this installer to computers physicaly in the same location at one time. IE send the installer to 1 lab of computers, then the next lab. for classrooms you might find it better to do 1 classroom or one building at a time.

Please provide more information. If the task sequence failed to run, you need to check smsts.log and update logs on the client.

Download software updates using Wi-Fi or hard wire

What is the fastest way to download software updates or the new Mountain Lion? Wi-Fi or cable? Is cabe much faster?

I do understand download speed depends on my internet conneciton speed. But when I plugged in the hard line the download speed increased quite significantly - as in from 12 hours to 47 minutes. Normally Wi-Fi is fairly quick but when it comes to downloading - not. That's why I asked the question. Maybe I need to change the settings on my MacBook Pro.

Have you sign-in into your Link BlackBerry ID? Once you have sign-in successfully, it supposed to be proper connection between BlackBerry Link and your device.
You have to check your usb device status in your computer also to make sure there are no error/conflicts of them.

IPhone 4 isn't recognized as my device and doesn't sync to itunes after a failed software update using itunes

The title says it all, but today I had the option to update my IPhone 4 through itunes and so I did. After a few minutes as the process was in effect an error popped up and said the update had failed.
Currently my phone is plugged into the USB port and is showing me a charger pointing to itunes; the complication is that my IPhone is no longer registered in my name and it also isn't sync'ing or being recognized through my itunes.
I've looked through the support pages and have done as many things as I can find which included:

None of these actions gave me the answer I needed.
I've also taken my phone to the nearest AT&T provider and they weren't completely sure what's going on.

First you have to try connecting your device to the computer an then reinstall the drivers by following these steps:
1'st step is to go into the device manager
2 step is to go to portable devices (it is rught under network adapters)
3 step is to right clic apple iphone and click update drivers
4 step is to brows your drivers from C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that your itunes must detect your device in DFU mode an you will have to push the restore button and it has to restore.

SEP Updates from distribution points

I'm trying to figure out the best and easiest way to leverage our DPs to updates the SEP definitions of the clients in their boundary group. Right now I have a ADR on the main site server to keep the clients up to date. I've distributed that deployment
package to all of our DPs. My question is....When the ADR runs and adds content to the SEP definitions package, does it automatically replicate those changes to the DPs or do I have to manually update DPs with that deployment package again? If that is the
case, is there a way for the DPs to download the definitions themselves and then use them to the update the clients at their location?

You can't create an update package without deploying it to a DP. Of course, you need to make sure it is deployed to all appropriate DPs (ConfigMgr can't magically do that), but once you've done that (which should be done at package creation time) then yes,
as Jeff mentioned, when the content in an update package is modified, it is automatically replicated to the content library on the site server and to any DPs it is deployed to.
Also, I'm assuming you are talking about System Center Endpoint Protection (SCEP) correct? SEP is the commonly used acronym for Symantec Endpoint Protection, two very different things.

Last Status Update in Distribution Point Configuration Status after 2012 R2 Upgrade not updating

I am having the oddest problem, and I was wondering if anyone had some pointers or knows how I can get this working. After I upgraded from
2012 SP1 CU3 to 2012 R2, the status update date on the DP config status will not update at all, even though under each DP it is updating? I can still push content to them, but instead of getting a % of transfer that is complete I get the generic 'Detail will
be available after the server finishes processing the messages'. I have tried to remove and re add the DP role to the DP's and am met with the same problem. I am assuming it's something is SQL but where to begin to look I have no idea.

Yes, I know this is an old post, but I’m trying to clean them up.
Did you solve this problem, if so what was the solution?
BTW I find that most of these type of things take ~ 24 hours to update.
