Softwareupdate Unix command, feedback on CatalogURL in Leopard?

I've been successfully updating my Macs from the Software Update Server on my Tiger server for some time. Tiger clients show feedback that they are addressing my server; the GUI client displays the server's address in the title bar, and the command-line tool puts up a line that it's loading the catalog from my server at the very beginning.
Leopard clients have this very helpful feedback item removed! Neither the GUI client nor the command line tool (which I've been using over ARD lately) has any indication any more that they are pulling the updates from my server.
Is there any way of getting this feedback info to display again?

defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.sharing.firewall state -boolean No
followed by a reboot works like a charm. thanks for you help.

  • UNIX command for disabling Firewall in Leopard?

I'd like to use ARD to send a unix command to all my Macs running Leopard that will set the OS's application firewall to "allow all incoming connections." I believe that's the default setting, but I've run into some machines that are setting specific access - not sure how, don't really care, just want to turn it off.
I've been reading up on /usr/libexec/ApplicationFirewall/socketfilterfw but the Help seems incomplete and I'm not sure this will accomplish what I'm after.

  • ARD and UNIX commands with outdated MAN pages. (e.g. networksetup)

I may have read it wrongly or referred to the wrong MAN page for "networksetup", but while trying to set proxies, I realise that networkservice for the ethernet port was no longer "Built-in Ethernet" but just Ethernet (without the quotes). Took quite some time to figure that one out. Any ideas if it's just the "new" MacBooks or 10.6.4 listing differently these days? I got my multiple unix commands to work :
    networksetup -setwebproxy Ethernet proxy 3128;
    networksetup -setwebproxy AirPort proxy 3128;
    networksetup -setproxybypassdomains Ethernet 10.0.1.10 *.local 10.0.0.200 10.0.0.0/16;

    softwareupdate -i -a

    Hi
I found this out a few weeks ago after trying for about 20-30 minutes or so. Won't be the first time manual pages were wrong or out-of-date, nor the last. Depending which OS you're running there are manual pages for utilities that don't exist any more. I remember ktrace disappearing in 10.5 yet the manual page was still available. Completely gone in 10.6.

  • Problems with ARD and SwUpd Unix Command

    Hi everybody
I have a problem sending UNIX commands to my clients, I work in a school with 500 macs, with 10.4 and 10.5 systems and all the computers download the updates from my Software Update Server, but when I try to send the command from ARD (sudo softwareupdate -i -a) the clients attemp to connect to Apple's servers instead my own SUS. It seems when I try to install with sudo command, overrides the address of my server.
    I show you the output:

I have the exact same problem with two PowerMac G5's. I need to have full resolution on the remote G5 which has no monitor connected, but only get to choose between PAL and NTSC TV resolution. This is really annoying, and in my opinion a major bug in ARD 3.1 and below. Why is the user forced to see such a small remote window if the remote computer is capable of much more?

  • UNIX command for terminal

Here is what I want to do:
I want to send the terminal command to 25 laptops all at once to direct them to our internal server for software update.
I know how to log in to all of the machines at once.
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events"' -e 'keystroke "username"' -e 'keystroke tab' \
    -e 'delay 0.5' -e 'keystroke "password"' -e 'delay 0.5' -e 'keystroke return' -e 'end tell'
I know how to open terminal.
    open -a terminal
Now what I want to know is how to have it type this in for me:
sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURLhttp://SERVER.local:8088/index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.su catalog
Then have a pause and then type my password.
Bonus points for then a script to force it to check for and do the update.

You don't need to use send unix command to send osascript to login, and then open the terminal to then type in a termainl command.
    you can just do
    send unix command
    as user root
    defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate CatalogURLhttp://SERVER.local:8088/index-mountainlion-lion-snowleopard-leopard.merged-1.su catalog

  • Software Update through UNIX command

    Hey all,
Just a quick question regarding Software Update through Remote Desktop.
I'm running the UNIX command softwareupdate -i -a but it hang. I'm guessing it's due to our proxy, and that we have to login to the proxy server in order for the system to continue fetching the updates.
Basically, what I'm asking is if there is a way to bypass this, i.e. a command to follow the systemupdate -i -a command which will log me into the proxy?
    Cheers,
    Nick

  • Using Unix Command Line to force logoff of other users

Hello - I am the administrator for my family's Mac (OS X - 10.4.8). Four of us in the family share the system. Frequently, my family members forget to logoff. I would like to be able to force them off via the Unix command line. Can't I sign on as root and execute a "forced logoff" type of command?

Thanks to Mihalis and Jarik for the additional info.
I'm back now with a question. I have a user named "visitor" logged on. I issued a killall command which killed all the users processes except one. Using /Applications/Activity Monitor.app, I can see the process is "loginwindow" and it is owned by visitor.
    However,
    ps -u visitor
reveals no running processes. Assuming I only had command-line access (no GUI to use Activity Monitor.app) and had multiple users logged in, how can I discover which loginwindow PID belongs to visitor?
    msq
EDIT: I went ahead and sudo kill PID the loginwindow process owned by visitor and realized that
    ps -axj | grep visitor
worked to reveal the loginwindow process owned by visitor. But when I logged visitor in (Fast User Switching) and ran sudo killall the Activity Monitor.app identifies the loginwindow as being owned by root but ps -axj | grep visitor shows the process belonging to visitor.
Something weird in the depths of Leopard's UNIX land, but I think I can find my way around now.
    Thanks, everyone.

  • Using Sent Unix Command in ARD 3 with proxy authentication

I'd like to use Unix commands to update Apple software through ARD thus allowing me to lock the computer screen before the process using the ARD command to do so, thus keeping the users from interfering with the process .
Our network utilizes password protected firewall proxy that hangs ARD when using the softwareupdate command through ARD's "Send Unix Command..." at the point in which it would ask for authentication if using the same command in the terminal.
Is there a Unix/terminal script or a series of script commands that could be modified to wait and enter the appropriate authentication at the previous mentioned prompt?
I've researched this topic on this forum and discover a few post that states it is not possible but they are fairly old posts so I am hoping ARD 3 has some scripts or commands that can pass thru a username and password

    Welcome,
I use the "System Events" handler, e.g.:
tell application "System Events" to delay 5.5
tell application "System Events" to keystroke "K"
tell application "System Events" to delay 0.5
tell application "System Events" to keystroke return
    Regards,
    Shawn

  • Problem with Updating clients with UNIX command

    Hi.
Until this day, I used to update all our 50 client macs by manually logging in as administrator via ARD and choosing Software Update from the apple menu, this works always and I use our own servers SUS so the downloading is really fast. Still, this clearly is time consuming and annoying when you have this many clients. I have now done some search and I know I could do this by sending unix command to clients using ARD. First I had problems with running the command, then I noticed I need to run this as root. Then it "works".
Works, not quite. It starts to run, and I can see all the output. I have tried this with few clients and the results are confusing. The following is an output from one client I send the command "softwareupdate -i -r"

    Running package scripts…
    Removing old files…
    Optimizing system for installed software…
    Moving items into place…
    Registering updated components…
And thats it, it stops there. Few clients completed the task, but the output says that they skipped the installation of all updates. In the case above, there is some skipping too, and I don't know what it means. Yesterday I left one client to this part where its Registering updated components.... , and today when I came in, it's still there, and the task is still running. When I update the clients with the Software Update from apple menu, it takes usually 10 minutes max to complete the whole process, download and install. After I restarted the same client and ran the manual Software Update from apple menu, it shows the same updates, it didn't do anything???
Am I doing something wrong with the command?

I am having the same issue. I send the unix command to some test clients to install all updates. The process never finishes and stays at "Registering updated companents....". (See screen shot)
I have manually restarted some of the clients after waiting a very long time. All updates seem to have been installed. I am wondering why the task hangs at this point. I want to be able to ran ASU with this Unix method on the 450+ macs that I manage at work, but it scares me that the task never seems to finish.

Unix Command install updates for 10.9 Mavericks does not work
These commands no longer work with 10.9

Are there new unix commands for 10.9 to install updates?

  • Unix command to update Microsoft Office 2008 via ARD

I'm looking for a unix command I can send via ARD to update Microsoft Office 2008. It just needs to install all updates and then restart. Kinda like apple's software update one: softwareupdate -i -a; shutdown -r now

Why go through all the trouble of trying to do it in Unix.  Apple and Microsoft made it a LOT easier.
Just download the update from Mactopia
    Open the .dmg
(for convience and ability to have it stored) Drag the Update from the Microsoft folder that opens up and put the update on your desktop
In ARD Select what computer(s) you want to install the update in
Use ARD Install function to install the update
Go have a cup of coffee and a donut while ARD does the install.
You do not even have to do a restart.  Microsoft uses a different icon for the update but it still is a package file operation.

  • Unix command to turn OFF Software Update

I've browsed through the networksetup -help and the systemsetup -help files and can't find anything that would allow me to send a unix command that would turn automatic software update off? Anyone got any thoughts?

    Send:
    softwareupdate --schedule off
and that is indeed a doubled hyphen in front of "schedule".
The command is user specific, so you would have to turn it off for every user on the system. I don't know of a global way to turn it off for all users at once.
    Regards.

  • Unix command to find certain files

    hello,
i have a powerbook g4 running leopard... i want to find all files related to a certain program or app. What would the unix command be to find all files related to a certain program or app.
Also... is there unix commands to find all related preferences or cached items?
    Any help would be great.

    find / -name "*.doc"
where "*.doc" would find all files ending in .doc
and / is the root (top most) directory. You may specify a different starting point
    find $HOME -name "*.pdf"
    or even multiple starting directories
    find ~username1 ~username2 ~username3 -name "*.zip"
You may specify more than one type of file to locate
find $HOME \( -name "*.dmg" -or -name "*.plist" \)
You may also want to look at the xargs command, as well as find's "-print0" option and xargs' "-0" option
find $HOME -name "*.txt" -print0 | xargs -0 grep "magic"

  • Software Updates using Unix command hangs

Every time I try to do a software update to my OS 10.6.4, 10.6.8 iMacs, the process stays an/or hangs and I have to cancel it. This is the last message in the log:
Writing files…    Running package scripts…    Removing old files…    Optimizing system for installed software…    Moving items into place…
I have left it there for 24 hours and it stills never finishes. When I check an individual machine, the updates are still outstanding, except the combo 10.6.8 on the machines that are running 10.6.4
Any help on this? I am running a Snow Leopard server with the software update service and doing local updates on the machines. I have sent already a unix command to the machines to do a local update with my server ip.
    Thanks,

If your using ARD , you should be able to send, and copy & run the installer on your client computers without needing to directly interact with the computers.
    ie:
download the 10.6.8 combo updaters v1.1.dmg onto your ARD computer
double click on the dmg so your computer mounts it.
    open ard
select  one or more client that need to update
click on install icon from the ard toolbar (it should be right next to unix) (altertively
a dialog box will pop up asking what you want to install
    click the +
select the 10.6.8 combo update v1.1.pkg from the mounted disk image
set restart after install to attempt or force restart.
    click install
it's a good idea to send this installer to computers physicaly in the same location at one time. IE send the installer to 1 lab of computers, then the next lab. for classrooms you might find it better to do 1 classroom or one building at a time.

  • Unix command for turning file sharing off

Is there a Unix command I can use to turn off file sharing on Leopard ( as well as Tiger ) laptops? I don't mean a command to kill it for the session, I need it off even if the system is restarted. Yes, I can do it though the Preferences, but I need to do it to over 200 some laptops. We have ARD and if we had a Unix command to send to turn file sharing off that would be helpful. Thank you.

There is a CLI for just about everything. From the [OS X Leopard Security Configuration Guide|http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/LeopardSecurity_Config20080530.pdf]:
    To disable FTP.
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist
    To disable SMB.
    defaults delete /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.smb.server EnabledServices
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/nmbd.plist
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/smbd.plist
    To disable AFP.
    launctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.AppleFileServer.plist
