Solaris 10, 6/06 documentation
Found a what's new at:
http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/817-0547
but nothing else.
Does anyone know if Sun is going to post new PDF's for the new version or are we stuck with the "beta" PDF's from FCS?
thanks,
alan

Solaris 1.1.2 documentation?
I'm looking to purchase documentation on installation and administration of Solaris 1.1.2. Any suggestions? The oldest I have been able to find on Sun's site is the 2.4 series with refrences to issues in migrating up.
Regards,
William JensenThe "wrong IR type" message is an internal compiler error. Try getting the all the current patches for the Studio compilers and see if that fixes the problem.
Regarding your command line:
Most of the options appear two or three times. You should look into cleaning up the option list.
The -xchip and -xcache options are questionable. If you don't have a particular reason for needing them, remove these options. In the best case they might provide a small performance boost. In the worst case, they will reduce performance significantly.
The -features option has a long list. Most of them are the default and cannot be disabled anyway.
-features=except,rtti,export,tmplife fall into that category.
-features=anachronisms is questionable. It allows code that was considered improper in 1991.
-instances=global is the default
-xalias_level=compatible makes strong claims about the program, allowing the optimizer to make simplifications that are not in general valid. (See the C++ Users Guide for details.) If any of those claims are not true, the program can fail in mysterious ways. -

What packages are required for an 11.2.0.3 install on Solaris 11?
Where can I find information on which packages are required to install Oracle 11.2.0.3 on Solaris 11?
The documentation only mentions Solaris 10. I tracked down the packages required for Solaris 10, and most of them are either included in the GA release of 11 or obsoleted.
There are however a couple of packages that are missing from the base install of Solaris 11:
SUNWarc (renamed to):
* consolidation/osnet/osnet-incorporation (installed)
* developer/library/lint (missing)
SUNWhea (renamed to):
* consolidation/osnet/osnet-incorporation (installed)
* system/header (misising)
So it looks like developer/library/lint and system/header are packages from required for Solaris 10 that are missing on 11. The installer however doesn't check for any packages whatsoever.
Does that mean it's safe to install the database?
Edited by: 894946 on Nov 21, 2011 8:38 AMHere is list of packages you need in order to install Oracle 11gR2 on Solaris 11:
SUNWarc SUNWbtool SUNWhea SUNWlibms SUNWpool SUNWpoolr SUNWsprot SUNWtoo SUNWlibm SUNWuiu8 SUNWfont-xorg-core SUNWfont-xorg-iso8859-1 SUNWmfrun SUNWxorg-client-programs SUNWxorg-clientlibs SUNWxwfsw SUNWxwplt
Some of the above are installed by default which you can find by:
pkginfo -i SUNWarc SUNWbtool SUNWhea SUNWlibms SUNWpool SUNWpoolr SUNWsprot SUNWtoo SUNWlibm SUNWuiu8 SUNWfont-xorg-core SUNWfont-xorg-iso8859-1 SUNWmfrun SUNWxorg-client-programs SUNWxorg-clientlibs SUNWxwfsw SUNWxwplt
I believe you will only have to install the following:
pkg install compatibility/packages/SUNWxwplt SUNWarc SUNWhea SUNWxorg-client-programs SUNWxorg-clientlibs

SUNWdsvh & SUNWdsvhx for Solaris 8 only?
Hi All -
I am installing Solaris packaged version of DS 5.2P4 via the JES method on a Sol10 server. I notice the JES4 will install the packages SUNWdsvh & SUNWdsvhx, however the documentation http://docs.sun.com/source/816-6697-10/install.html#23713 mentions this are only for Sol8 installations. I know the documentation above was created prior to DS 5.2 support on Sol10 - but the majority of the documentation is not updated for each release.
Are these packages only for Solaris 8 as the documentation mentions? If so - why would JES4 which knows the installation is taking place on a Sol10 host - install them?
Any ideas?
Thanks allThe short answer is generally no.
The long answer is that it can be done but you will need to make sure that on the Solaris 10 machine you only use functions/headers/libraries that are available on Solaris 8 otherwise they will not be found and the software won't work.

Hello-
Does anyone know if/where there is information on installing
BC4J on OC4J on Solaris?
All the documentation/installations I've found have been Windows-
specific.
Thanks,
Rico R. GuzmanI did not run the installer on Solaris.
All the installation and configuration was done under windows.
After everything was working I moved the entire directory
structure to Solaris and made one change to the startup batch
file. The startup batch file looks as follows:
nohup java -cp ./classes:orion.jar
com.evermind.server.ApplicationServer
In windows ./classes was .\classes. This was the only change I
had to make.
Since OC4J is pure Java, it is platform independent and this
proved it completely. -
Using Trunking 1.3 to create a trunk accross two switches
Hi:
I have installed Solaris Trunking 1.3 on my SF 880 which is running Solaris 10. It has two CE interfaces which i have configured in one trunk. Failover works fine when I connect them to a single Nortel 8000 switch. The problem is that I can't get failover working properly when I connect one CE interface to a Nortel 8000 switch and the other CE interface to another Nortel 8000 switch. Should this work? I have seen many references, eg in the Solaris Trunking 1.3 documentation, that actually says you can't create a trunk accross switches but i also found BUG ID 5079123 which says you can.
By the way I can't use the version of trunking software that is bundled with Solaris 10 because it doesn't support the CE interfaces.
Cheers
SteveThanks for your reply. I should have mentioned that i don't need load balencing over the trunk to work. I just need failover to work. In fact that is just what the bug id says i should be able to do across two switches. Here's a copy of the bug id:
Bug ID: 5079123
Synopsis: Trunking 1.3 to support L2 failover across switches
Category: enet_trunking
Subcategory: softwareState: 10-Fix Delivered
Description: Due to overwhelming requests to support L2 failover solution for Sun NIC across two switches. This is not trunking or Link aggregation feature as it breaks the standard of all trunk members connect to one switch.
Requirements are :
1. provide Layer 2 failover similar to IPMP(layer 3) and yet be simple enough to configure.
2. No loadbalancing.
3. Connect across two switches. and when one switch/nic fails, the traffic moves seemlessly and instantly.
4. Failback: When the failed link is back online, traffic moves back to original link. Date Modified: 2004-09-08 06:13:32 GMT+00:00
Cheers

This is my first installation for Solaris 10.
I installed the Solaris 10 & my required applications on one Sun FireV210 server. Now I have another server & I want it to be a backup for the first one in case of any failure may happen.
So what is the best way to copy the first server (operating system & applications)?
I heard that I can use installation method called Flash Installation; so is it the best way or I can use something else?!!
& if its the way does anyone have the Solaris 10 flash installation documentation or a simplified installation tutorial??!!
Thanks in advanceHi,
try to use HTTP for the transfer between
the two servers. Normally You can pass the
firewall using HTTP (like browsers do).
Therefor use classes in the java.net packages.

How to disable reverse DNS lookup on SSH login
How do I disable reverse DNS lookup on SSH login in Solaris 9? I'm using the version bundled with Solaris 9.
OpenSSH documentation says that I should set UseDNS to no but the option doesnt work in the bundled version of SSH server.
I do not want to upgrade the bundled version of SSH server. Your help will be greatly appreciated.Ah nevermind. I think it was some command I ran changing english.lproj that did this so i am starting over.
