Solaris 10/6/06 Routing

Hello,
I am trying to set up my Solaris server as a router and am having trouble. I am brand new to solaris but have had some experience with windoze.
Basically my server has two nics
sfe0 and sfe1
sfe0 is connected through a switch to my private network 192.168.1.0 and has an address of 192.168.1.107
sfe1 is connected to my DSL modem with network address 192.168.2.0 and an IP address of 192.168.2.3
My DSL modem has a private address of 192.168.2.1 and a public address assigned by DHCP from my service provider.
The problem is when I use my laptop to try connectivity to my solaris server I am able to ping both nic's but am unable to ping my DSL modem.
Details of configurations.

  • Configuring Solaris 8 Sparc w/router and cable modem

I recently purchased a Sun Ultra 10 with Solaris 7
pre-installed. I decided to immediately upgrade to
Solaris 8. The operating system has installed properly
    so far.
However, I'm at the point now where I am entering
information to allow Solaris to connect to my network
and thus the Internet, and the combinations I have tried
    don't work.
I use a cable modem service with a Netgear RT314
four-port router. It functions in a standard way - the
cable modem is 192.168.0.1 and shows up on my
WinXP PC (in ipconfig /all) as the DNS server and
gateway server. On the PC, for "Connection-specific
DNS suffix", I see nc.rr.com (my ISP).
Solaris 8 wants to know my domain name, as well as
my DNS server. I don't know what domain name to give
it. I have tried nc.rr.com, but when I enter that plus
192.168.0.1 as the DNS server, I end up receiving this
message: ""Unable to find an entry for dchppc3 with the
    specified DNS configuration."
I have been afraid to move beyond this point, although
it's possible that it will work properly and just isn't
    receiving the confirmation it expects.
Any suggestions would be welcome, either in this forum
or emailed to me. My address is [email protected]
    Thanks.

I decided to plow ahead with the installation. It works
properly within my local network - I can ping dchp
addresses and view Web files from my local server
using 192.168.0.3 (that machine's dchp address).
However, it can't get to the Internet. So my problem
now is that I can see the router, but can't see the
Internet services that the router provides to the other
computers on my network. Presumably, I need to
alter my DNS settings ... however, on my PCs, I seem
to simply use the router (192.168.0.1) as the DNS, and
it properly passes the request along to my cable modem
provider. Why would this work for the PCs but not for
    Solaris 8? Thanks -

  • Solaris 10: Unable to route to Internet

    Folks,
I installed Solaris 10 on Sun Ultra 30. Server is up & everything looks good, except I am not able to connect to Internet from Ultra30.
Problem is not in Name Resolution, but in routing to external network. At least it so seems.
At my home, it's a typical cable modem & Netgear router setup. I reserved the IP (192.168.1.3) for the MAC address of Ultra30 @ my router and used that IP address on Ultra30 setup.
I am able to reach to this node from the other nodes, connected to same router, by telnet/ftp etc. Those nodes are able to go to Internet without any problem. I am able to ping from Ultra30 to the Dynamic IP address of other nodes on the same network.
Here is the output of various commands.

I have a similar problem. In my case, the issue is in the resolv.conf file which is setup with the ISP router address (192.168.1.3) by the Solaris installation procudure.
    # cat /etc/resolv.conf
    192.168.1.3
However, the routing by DNS does not work with this. So I edit the resolv.conf file to have this:
    # cat /etc/resolv.conf
    nameserver 192.168.1.3
The entry name the address of the primary DNS.
Of course, this assuming that you have already edit the nsswitch.conf
    Do a check:
    # more /etc/nsswitch.conf | grep hosts
    # “hosts:” and “services:” in this file are used only if the
    hosts: files dns
If you only see "hosts: files" in the last line, edit the file and add " dns" to that line.

How install routings in Solaris 10 6/06 ??It depends on what your routing script does. Solaris 10 introduces persistent routing, so you may just need to add the route once (persistently), then let the system take care of it.

  • Router for Solaris

I am using a Linksys Gateway model WAG354G in my Windows PC. I am planing to buy a Dell server and install Solaris. Will my Linksys router work with Solaris? If not what product can I use with Solaris to setup a web server? I could not find any similar products listed in Solaris HCL.
    Thanks.

    Hello.
The WAG354G should work independently of the operating system so it will work under Solaris.
In the router configuration set "Starting IP address" to something like 192.168.1.20 so you will have 192.168.1.2...19 as fixed IP addresses. Assigning a fixed IP address to a Solaris computer is easier than using DHCP. You may also choose to use DHCP in the Solaris network settings but this will cause problems when you want to boot your computer and no network is attached.
Define the router's IP address (typically 192.168.1.1) as default gateway in the Solaris network configuration.
I just took a look at the WAG354G specifications and it seems to be possible to use your computer as web server.

  • Solaris 9 remote login (ssh) drops connection

    Hello All,
I wonder if you can help me...
Let me give you some set-up details before I ask you the question.
I have Ultra-60 at home with Solaris 9 and recommended patch cluster installed. The machine is connected to a Linksys WAG54G ADSL router/modem through RJ45 ethernet cable. The router also has windows XP machine connected through RJ45 ethernet cable. I also have another windows XP machine that connects to the router over wireless connection.
I have opened up required ports on the router/port forwarding so that I can access the services remotely. I was first using default ports for http and ssh, but have now changed them to different ports - to be a bit more secure.
I have created a domain name through dyndns.org.
I have ssh running on the solaris 9 machine and has all the remote commands (rlogin, rsh, telnet) commented out in the /etc/inetd.conf and hence are not running on the machine.
I have a UK ADSL servise provider called Pipex.
Now lets get to the problem:
The whole purpose of the above set-up is that I want to access sun machine from work. The whole set-up works perfectly well - for a little while and then something strange happens. At work, when I connect to the sun machine, everything works fine and when I leave the session idle for 15-20 minutes (could be less time), the connection drops and then I can not connect to the machine for good couple of hours. When I say connection drops, I do not mean that system displays a logout message or something - There is no response from the server - pressing of return key does not do anything and eventually I get a message on windows pop up that connection is disconnected. If I try to retry, the client tries for a while and then says that connection timed out. Same thing happens if I use the IP address I use the right IP address as someone at home checks the router to confirms the correct IP address. This eliminates problem with domain name.
I have tried everything and can not work out what is causing this problem - the machine has all the 9_recommended patches. To narrow the problem down, I set up apache server on the sun machine. Today, when the connection dropped, I tried to connecting to the apache server and it failed - 'page can not be displayed' message on the internet explorer. However, after couple of minutes, I managed to get to the website but still can not get login prompt through ssh client.
What does that mean? Does it mean that server is playing up, or is it the sshd or is there any time out option in solaris 9... the strange thing is that I can access the web page - though it was not accessible at start when connection to ssh dropped out.
Could it be the router? The linksys do not come with a rule based firewall... so there is nothing that states that disconnects after some inactivity. The port forwarding is working as I do get to login to the server and to the web server. It can not be changing the default port numbers as the problem was there when there were standard ports being used.
It is not the link at my office as my friend, in a different company gets the same problem on my machine connects to it and after some in-activity, the connection drops and then he can not login for a long time.
It can not be the ADSL link as people at home can use the internet without any problem and they can access the sun machine locally.
It can not be the windows machines connected to the router as problem is there when windows machines are switched off dont know if windows would cause this, but just wanted to eliminate anything that I could think of.
One strange think that I did see yesterday was that, when I managed to login the last command showed that I was logged in throughout the time the time when I could not logged in . The error message in the /var/adm/messages stated something like socket error and connection reset by peer or something can not give you exact message right now as I can not login to the machine. The time on the message was couple of couple of minutes before I managed to login again and that time was the same as the time showed in last command is my logout time.
Does anyone know what is causing all this problem? Any pointers or help will be appreciated. If there is any place else that you think I can get the answer, please kindly let me know.

    Thanks...
    A few new developments....
    - I opened 2 sessions to the server, left one with no activity and in the other session, I ran iostat 1... The session with no activity got dropped and iostat one carried on... When the session dropped, I managed to login straight away... so no delay of couple of hours. May be because iostat was still running?
    - I now have an ftp server running on windows and I can access it even when connection drops out... right now I have no access to sun... but ftp server is running fine.
    - I enable remote router access and I can access that as well...
    - I enabled telnet and I can not access the sun with telnet either.
So, its either solaris 9 or the router.
Tomorrow, I will connect an another sun machine and then see if connection to both is dropped or just one. If it is to both then it must be router as the way ssh, telnet work is different to the way ftp work - as someone told me this today... so if other sun machine is not accessable then its not sol9 but router. The other machine has Sol 2.5.1 running.
Some one said that it could be that router is running out of translation table entries - but with so few connections? Or it could be that when there is no activity, router thinks that connection should be dropped - there is no open in the router setup which states that... Or Solaris has some timeout feature?
    More later.
    Kind Regards
    Ahmerin

  • Setting up Solaris for Internet Acodemcess via Cable M

I am using Solaris 2.7 and wanted to know how to configure it to use my cable modem for Internet access. Where do I assign the gateway address in Solaris of the gateway/router I'm using?? I connect my cable modem to a router that's talking DHCP out to my LAN. I need to know how to configure Solaris for this type of configuration. I have looked everywhere and have not found how to configure.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

    so I'm thinking NAS.
The experts in the iPhoto and Aperture forums strongly advise against trying to locate the image library on a NAS.
If you are planning to use iPhoto or Aperture, you really should post in the support forum for the application that you are using. The links are just below.

  • Unable to connect to netgear router and internet

I've installed Solaris 10 1/06 (x86) on a system running an intel mainboard model D865PERL. This has a built in ethernet controller ( Intel 82547EI gigabit lan controller) and the mainboard appears on the bigadmin hcl as being supported. The OS recognizes the built-in NIC as e1000g0 but during initial installation it attempts to configure e1000g0 first thing then responds with "skipped interface e1000g0" then proceeds with the installation.
I choose Networked and run through the installation (or following a sys-unconfig) selecting to enable DHCP but it returns "Could not contact a dhcp server on the network interface e1000g0." I then have to set it up staticly to resume the configurator. I specify the e1000g0's ip address as 192.168.0.5 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. I choose not to enable IPv6 (ive tried it with IPv6 enabled) and no Kerberos. I attempt to specify DNS for name service and use my internet providers domain name (both the name and the resolved ip address associated with it) with the two DNS server ip addresses resolved by the WAN setup on the router (Netgear FR328S), selecting no search domains. But it is unable to locate my hostname on the provided DNS's i entered. dunno why it would say that, it really doesn't matter does it? Anyway, I specify no name service to proceed. i choose no to the question in regards to overriding the system's default NFS version 4 domain name to continue.
It knows it has a cable connection but I'm unable to see the router, even though ive specified 192.168.0.1 as the default route (ive also tried setting it to detect the default route on reboot but it fails). The router doesn't see the NIC as a connected device either (im setting here on another computer running xp :() Ive tried disabling the DHCP server feature on the router and I still cant see it. Ive tried setting the NIC's ip address and MAC address as reserved in the LAN setup on the router (this works for my winXP drive where I need a static IP address and also have access to the internet). I've tried leaving the reserved IP address assignment (attached to the NIC's mac address and host name that i specified) with DHCP enabled but I'm still unable to resolve an IP address from the dhcp server. I made sure the router had the latest firmware and went through the configuration with a fine toothed comb, so to speak. nothing seems to work.
I tried to connect directly to the internet device, removing the router and it still fails to resolve an ip address via dhcp. what am i missing here? Ive run through this multiple times now and im at a loss. Ive also referenced sun's System Administration Guide: IP Service to try to resolve the issue but im now all I'm doing is going in circles.

    Couple of suggestions:
Work first on seeing the router, using a static IP and pings.
Forget about DNS, DHCP, etc for now. If you don't see the router, nothing is going to work.
You don't need to reboot or do sys-unconfig every time. Just change your settings using ifconfig and route add. Actually, you don't even need to set the route to be able to ping something inside your subnet.
By your output of ifconfig, it seems that the NIC plumbed correctly.
In the Solaris machine, try pinging your own IP address to make sure it responds and you don't have any issues with the NIC/driver.
Make sure the cable and port in your router work. If you can use them with Windows, you should be able to use them with Solaris. Unless...
Try using a crossover network cable to connect the Solaris computer to the router. This is personal experience: I had a Blade 100 that would not see my router. After a couple of hours of trying just about everything, I used a crossover cable and voila! it worked. Why? I don't know :) , but it worked...

    Sun Ultra 5
    Solaris 8
    Linksys BEFSR41 Router
    Background:
I am configuring my first Sun system.
I installed Solaris 8 (02/02) and have the system running. This is actually my second install on this machine due to a problem (caused by me).
    Problem:
The system reports that there is no hostname. I have looked at the online documentation and have run sys-unconfig several times.
When I run sys-unconfig, as root, I open a console, type sys-uncofig, and then answer y to reboot. The system reboots (usually -- sometimes there is a RPC error and the system halts. I press STOP + A to regain access and then type boot at the ok prompt). When the system reboots, I get a language question, IPv6 question, and usually a DHCP question. I answer yes to IPv6 andselect DHCP. Then I usuallly get an error after confirming all prompts indicating that since the machine booted from the network, DHCP was not available. My problem is (probably many), I am never prompted for a hostname. I also never seem to complete the sys-uncofig scripts without some type of error. Oddly, my previous install did not have this problem and I was able to set my hostname previously.
I have referred to the online documentation (recommending using sys-uncofig to reset the hostname). There is no /etc/nodename file on the machine currently so I cannot just change this file.
Any help would be appreciated. I am concerned that the sys-unconfig never seems to prompt me for the appropriate questions.

    Thank you for the help.
The problem does seem to be due to my selection of
DHCP first. I probably got confused following the
first installation. I thought that I did this before
(select DHCP right away) but may not have. I will try
the suggestions and post the results. The problem here, which I have as well with this Linksys router, is the DHCP server. It does serve IP addresses but not hostnames. It's really TurboLinux inside the router, you'd think one could specify hostnames as well but there is no way to configure such things. The Sun box simply gets an IP without the hostname.
I tried changing the two files specified previously, I don't believe this works. I had CDE going crazy trying to associate unknown with loopback or something. Try setting these, then selecting Host->This Host. No go.

  • Problems connecting to internet

    Hi all,
I have recently installed Solaris 10 11/06 x86 and it appears to be running interference with my broadband
router, I'm quite new to Solaris and Unix as a whole so am lost as to how to track and fix this problem
    (if it is fixable).
Please help, Any assistance much appreciated.
    Kenny.
    ===============
    PC1
Model: HP Workstation xw6000 dual Xeon
    Memory: 4GB
OS: Solaris 10 11/06 x86 [Full Install + security and recommended patches]
NIC: Intel PRO/1000 MT Desktop Adapter
    PC2
Model: [Custom] Asus NCCH-DL Dual Xeon
    Memory: 2GB
OS: Windows XP Pro 2002 SP2 [all security and critical patches installed]
NIC: Intel PRO/1000 MT Dual Port Server Adapter
    Broadband Router
    Model: Vigor2600V series annex A, Firmware: v2.5.8.3_UK
    Problem:
Solaris interferes with the router stopping all internet connections
    Observations:
The fault seems to be caused by the interactions of the Solaris TCP/IP Stack and the Vigor Router.
Same fault when PC2 had Windows 2003 Server R2 installed.
Same fault when PC2 had Solaris 10 11/06 installed.
The LAN appears unaffected, can SSH to PC1 from PC2 without any side effects.
Every so often can connect to the internet from PC2 for some minutes before connection is lost.
When connection is lost it remains down for some time, ADSL remains online.
When connection is lost no part of the WAN is communicable, no ping, etc...
When disconnecting PC1 from router, within 30-45 seconds everything returns to normal, I do not have to reboot router.
    Notes:
Both PC's have IP addresses set statically, not via DHCP.
The DNS address for both PC's references the router.
Currently I have to physically disconnect the network cable to PC1 or shutdown the Solaris OS in order
to use the internet from PC2.
Even with all this I'm loving Solaris but will have to return to W2K3 Server if this issue cannot be
resolved as it is unworkable, please help.

    Hi again,
I've just discovered that when PC2 stops connecting to the internet, if I ssh to PC1 and wget the same page I was just trying to retrieve from PC2 the transfer begins immediately and PC2 also starts working normally?
    go figure!
anyway I'm just off to read the Developer Forums Code of Conduct, hopefully I haven't posted incorrectly or offended anyone in my haste.
    Kenny.
PS: it can take up to 30 secs for PC2 to begin connecting to the internet again.
So the problem appears now to be interference with the Windows XP machine and not the Router.

  • Unable to ping across subnet

    hi
    i have a solaris system
    hostname sun
    router (IP) 10.xx.xx.1
    IP 10.xx.xx.20
    network id 10.xx.xx.0
    mask 255.255.255.0
    where problem is
i can't ping from solaris machine(sun) to any PC across the subnet ( with IP as well as name).
    resolution
    --> /etc/defaultrouter is in order
--> network card is properly setup and running
--> can ping any system on local subnet including router(with IP ! DNS is across the subnet).
--> can ping from other PC's(win) on same subnet to systems across subnet using same default gateway settings
( that is routing settings at router are okay) .
    --> netstat -r (shows following output )
    sun% netstat -r
    Routing Table:
Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface
    10.xx.xx.0 sun U 3 2460 hme0
    224.0.0.0 sun U 3 0 hme0
    default 10.xx.xx.1 UG 0 37756
    localhost localhost UH 0 6502 lo0
    sun%
    --> /etc/netmasks
    10.0.0.0 255.255.255.0
--> it takes unreasonably long time to set default interface for multicast during boot.
any suggestions where the problem could be.
    thnx
    garry

    Hi garry
Yes you cannot ping with name unless you dont include that system's name and ip in the host file.
Due to the following reasons, you cannot ping ip across the subnet :
    1. The pinging ip may be in a different vlan for which you dont have any access.
    2. The default gatway has to be added which is accessable to other subnet also.
To over come your problem :
    sample diagram of your problem
    sub net 1- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    you are here |
    sub net 2 - - - - - - - - - - - - route - - - - -dns / internet
    |
    sub net 3- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
    is this n/w diag ok.
still you have any problem check the ACL of the router.

  • Gateway Configuration getting dropped

    Hi,
I have configured the default gateway using route add default x.x.x.x on the solaris server. With route -f command, iam able to see the gateway configuration. But after a time span of 10-15 seconds, the gateway configuration is getting lost.
But the entry still exists in the /etc/defaultroute file.
IPv6 has been enabled on this machine. I disabled and tried, still the same problem exists.
    Thanks in advance,
    Sarat.

    Hmm.
The command "route -f" flushes the routing table, or in other words, clears the routing table from all entries. So its no wonder if your default router disappears.
    To list existing routes, run:
    "netstat -nr"
The file where you store the defaultrouter is /etc/defaultrouter (note the trailing "r"), this file is only read at boot and not during normal system operation.

  • Solaris 10 Dev. Edition - Network config issue (NIC,DHCP,Can't ping router)

I am a developer getting started with Solaris 10 configuration. I recently installed Solaris 10 and have run into an issue with network connectivity.
I have done much research on this and I was able to get communiction to the internet established once, but the settings were lost on reboot.
Overview - The Solaris box is connected to a router which is acting as a DHCP server.
    AMD 64 dual 2.6
    nForce4+ integrated NIC
    1) I am not able to obtain an address from the router. Nor do I get a respons back when I ping it. I get an IP etc if I boot into Windows so phyicial connectivity is fine.
    2) Upon reboot the device nfo0 as shown using ifconfig -a has an IP of 0.0.0.0.
    3) If I run ifconfig [hostname] my machine gets the ip from the hosts file, but I would like to obtain this from the router.
    4) NOTE - the machine shows as active on my router, but the Solaris box cannot be reached from other computers on the networ, nor do I get a reply back when pinging the router from the Solaris box.
GOAL - reach and obtain a DHCP from the router and have the changes stick upon reboot.
    /etc/hosts contents
    127.0.0.1 localhost loghost
192.168.1.55 solarisX /*<-- this is what I get when I do ifconfig nfo0 solarisX */
    /etc/hosname.nfo0
    netmask + 255.255.255.0
    solarisX
    /etc/defaultrouter
    192.168.1.254
    /et c/netmasks
    192.168.0.0 255.255.2550
    Specific Steps taken:
Using the driver nfo-2.4.5 locate at http://homepage2.nifty.com/mrym3/taiyodo/eng/ I did the following.
    % cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    % rm obj Makefile
    % ln -s Makefile.${KARCH}_${COMPILER} Makefile
    % ln -s ${KARCH} obj
where ${KARCH} is the result of `isainfo -n`, and ${COMPILER} is
"gcc" or "suncc" which you want to use to make the driver.
    4. Testing
Testing before installation is strongly recommended.
    # cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make install
    # ./adddrv.sh
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make uninstall (for solaris7, don't remove the file )
    # modload obj/nfo
    # devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r )
    # ifconfig nfoN plumb ( where N is an instance number, typcally 0 for first card)
    # ifconfig -a ( you will see an entry for nfoN)
    # ifconfig nfoN YOUR-HOST-NAME
    # ifconfig nfoN ( ensure IP address is correct)
    # ifconfig nfoN up ( and then you can test with ping, telnet, ftp ...)
    5. Installation
After you ensure that the nfo driver is fully functional, install it.
    (1) copy the nfo driver into the kernel directory
    # cd /.../nfo-x.x.x
    # /usr/ccs/bin/make install
If you do not test the nfo driver yet, execute the following commands:
    # ./adddrv.sh
    # devfsadm -i nfo (for solaris7, use drvconfig and reboot with -r)
    (2) Configure the network interface. Create and/or modify the following file:
    /etc/hostname.nfoN
    (3) Reboot the system.
    # init 6

Thanks Alan. I worked on trying to get the NIC working again last night. I had it working once, although the settings did not perist. I can still get the device to load, but I can't communciate with the router (it's not physical because another OS can reach it.
I took your advice and tried the sys-unconfig. But I did not have much success.
I am wondering if plopping in a new PCI NIC would be the most efficient route to get the server up.
What kind of NIC do you utilize and have had success with?
I am looking at possibly a DLINK DFE-530 or NetGear FA-311. I don't need wireless at this point just a rock solid DEV box.
Thanks again for the previous info.
