Solaris 8 to Solaris 9

We have just migrated an Oracle application from a Solaris 8 environment to Solaris 9. My question is: Are the following /etc/system settings valid in solaris 9?
exclude:sbdp
exclude:gptwo
exclude:sbd

In my experience you just boot from the Sol 9 CD or DVD ("boot cdrom" at the eprom prompt) and use the interactive install mode. One of the questions it will ask is whether you want to perform an initial install or an upgrade. Choose upgrade. It's rather automatic but slow.

Solaris 9, Solaris Management Console ISSUE
I have Solaris 9 installed and I am unable to use the Solaris Management console.
I have managed to start it:
    /etc/init.d/init.wbem start
    /etc/init.d/init.wbem status -> shows it's running
But if I try browser with the link http:// host:898, I have got the following error:
"A web version of the Solaris Management Console is not available at this time."
    any Idea why?

Are you running Trusted Extensions? What patch cluster are you on? What toolbox are you opening?

Oracle Instant Client was a "feature" introduced with Oracle 10g. There is no 9i version.
Code that links with Oracle 9i libraries should be able to be linked with Instant Client 10gR2.
The resulting application will be able to connect to databases from Oracle 8.1 onwards.

  • Help for solar battery, solar panel, solar charger!

    Hi to all,
a solar battery = solar charger=solar panel ?? Today, my friend argue with me about the difference between *solar battery*, *solar panel* and *solar charger*... Is there anybody who can tell me the difference between them?? And does anyone have any experience with an easy to use solar charger than can be used to charge a laptop battery? I'm trying to help a friend out and i've got no experience with these.
    I really appreciate, thanks!

No experience here.....but I did a little Googling and came up with this...

  • Is there a way to undelete files in solaris, either solaris 8 or solaris 10

    Hi Everyone,
Want to check with you whether any option available to undelete a file in solaris8 or solaris10. Please let me know.
    Thanks everyone,
    Lakshmana Immidi.

Maybe, but mostly no. If you do a Google search you will see many ways to undelete files, but all are based on a number of assumptions:
    1. You are not using ZFS. Most of these methods work with UFS or ext2/ext3.
    2. You stop immediately upon accidentally deleting the file. A multiuser system is continually generating files, whether from users or from temporary processes that are running all the time. Any disk blocks your original file was on may get over-written very quickly by new files. Inodes of the files may get re-used, and inodes don't contain the name of the file they reference.
If using ZFS on Solaris 10, using snapshots is the best way to preserve user files. You can roll back to a previous snapshot, or even just go to the directory the snapshot is stored in and copy the file over. You can set up a script to take snapshots at various times to ensure you always have a fairly recent copy. You can also take incremental snapshots so you don't have to copy tons of data with each snapshot.

  • LDAP over SSL for Solaris 9 / Solaris 10

I have successfully configured Solaris-10 clients to use Windows 2003 R2 Active Directory for LDAP authentication over SSL. However, my production environment is still running on Solaris-9. I am able to make Kerberos and ldapsearch working on Solaris-9, but I am still NOT able to use PuTTY to make authentication with AD.
I reviewed all my steps that I configured on Solaris-10, but somewhat I could not make it work on Solaris-9. If anybody sucessfully deployed on Solaris-9, please advices! Any helps greatly appreciated.

I am thinking about pam.conf file or ldapclient's configuration file, any suggestion?

I have now sat down and looked at your suggestion and I am pretty certain we can't implement it ... :( I was hoping it was just going to be configuration files that were copied (maybe a naive hope, but there you go!) This system is going to be deployed as a live service for a government agency so I do not think we can, in all good conscience, have binaries from two different OS releases residing on the same server as it will make the system nigh-on non-patchable.
Let's hope Sun have somethig constructive to say about our issue which, I am slowly beginning to think, is related to the password.
If I su to the test AD user we have whilst logged in as a root user (which does not, of course, prompt for a password) it all works nicely - home directory, shell, the id command gives all that is expected of uid and gid. Now, should I be in a as a non-root user and try the same I get prompted for a password and it all fails - despite me providing what should be the correct password.
If I do a getent for the user the returned data has a blank for the password field (as opposed to the usual x).
I think that somewhere, somehow, in the transmission of data that the password is getting a level of encryption that the AD is not setup to unravel. The packets are all encrypted through ldap (we are using tls simple) but what of the password within the packet? Does anything encrypt that first, and if so, does AD know how to decrypt it?

  • Installing Oracle 10.2.0.2 on Solaris 11 (Solaris Express) x86

    Hi!
I have a problem with installing oracle on Solaris 11. When I ran installation program I got a message like this: "Wrong version of OS. The version must be 10".
    Then program finished its work.
Is it possible to install Oracle 10.2.0.2 (or another version) on Solaris 11?

Solaris 11 is not certified with 10g R2, that's why you getting error.

  • Accurate answer for Solaris 9 - Solaris 10 features

    Hi Guys,
We are about to make decision migrating from solaris 9 to solaris 10 but I could not find an accurate answer what differences exist between these versions. I know, there are features mentioned in solaris 10 web page but it is not enough. In an conversation with Chris Ratcliffe, he mentioned there are new 600 features added to Solaris 10. So what are they? I can't understand Why there isn't an informative whitepaper or that kind of article for differences between Solaris 9 - 10 from Sun.
If you can please point out something different then Solaris 10 New Features page, I'd appreciate it.
    Thanks.

Very good question. I will try to answer.
    1. Performance : Any application which run on Solaris 9 if you installed on Solaris 10 , you will get 30 % performace gain.
    2. You also get following benefit.
    a. Zfs -- this file system eliminates need of volume manager and easy to use it.
    b. Zone: You can create virtual server inside your server. You reboot the that server. Some limitation exists but nice feature.
    c. Dtrace : You can find point of problem for your application the help of dtrace. Some expertise is needed to use this.
    d. Firewall : Firewall included with this OS.
    e. SMF : This feasure keeps centralised information about all services. ( Complicated for new user. ) This are few one.
    3. Some new system bundeled with Solaris 10 and they do not support Solaris 9. ( T1000 and T2000 )
I am using solaris 10 since last 1 year and are happy about it. But upgradation need to planned carefully. Go for only ( and only ) June 2006 release.
    Best Luck.

  • Solaris 10/Solaris Express on Asus Z80K

    Hi,
I am trying to install Solaris on an Asus Z80K (AMD64, Nvidia nforce2 chipset). The booting starts but fails quickly with this message:
    SumOS Secondary Boot Version 4.0.2
    prom_panic: kmem_free block already free
    Entering boot debugger:
    [139689]:
The posted message comes from the solaris express boot CD. The solaris 10 boot CD also prints the same message (the debug address might have been different thougth)
Any ideas as to what could be wrong ?

Me too! I'm actually installing Solaris 10 x86 from a Jumpstart server (ultra 10) onto v20z servers. I'm getting and IP address from the Jumpstart server and snoop says it's looking for bootevn.rc which I can't find under /tftpboot. I have found an article that states you must have rpld running and it's not. This could be my issue.

    hi
i have installed solaris 11.2 in ldom (sparc ovm 3.1 )

Error occurred during execution of 'generated-transfer-3442-1' checkpoint.

You might want to tune PKG_CLIENT_LOWSPEED_TIMEOUT before running "zoneadm install"
    For example:
    # export PKG_CLIENT_LOWSPEED_TIMEOUT=300

  • Performance of dd in solaris 10

I ran a test the other day of dd'ing an entire 9g drive to another 9g driver under solaris 9, and solaris 10. solaris 10 was 2x faster. I know sun had been working on performance enhancements, and had speeded up system calls and such, but this seems like a huge enhancement, esp for something that seems low level like dd. Does anybody have an explanation on what made dd so much faster under solaris 10 ?
I'll be looking forward to finding other features like this in solaris 10!
    SunOS 5.9 Generic_112233-05 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIi-Engine
    # time dd bs=2048k if=/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s2 of=/dev/rdsk/c1t6d0s2
    4316+1 records in
    4316+1 records out
    real 59:22.2
    user 0.0
    sys 10.0
    SunOS 5.10 s10_69 sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIi-Engine
    # time dd bs=2048k if=/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s2 of=/dev/rdsk/c1t6d0s2
    4316+1 records in
    4316+1 records out
    real 31:39.8
    user 0.0
    sys 1.6

That is a happy surprise. In my tests of dd over the years, we
max out at the media speed of the device.
Also, was this an x86 platform? If so, check to see if
DMA is enabled. prtconf -pv and look for
    something like *-dma-enabled for the
    appropriate driver.

  • How to use 64-bit native libraries on Solaris?

This question has probably been asked many times, but I couldn't find the answer in my searches.
How can I get Java Web Start on a Solaris client (Solaris 10 in this case, with JRE 1.5, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions installed) to run a java application that includes a 64-bit native code library? The application runs fine when invoked directly on the workstation.
The application downloads properly with Java Web Start, including the jar file that has the native shared object, but when the native library is loaded by the java application, I get a "wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64" error.
I assume that is because Web Start is invoking the 32-bit java VM, which can't load a 64-bit library. I tried configuring Java Web Start to use the 64-bit VM (by setting the path to java to ".../jre/bin/sparcv9/java" in the javaws console) but then I get an error that says "Can't load library: .../jre/lib/sparcv9/libdeploy.so".
Does Java Web Start support the use of 64-bit native code libraries, and if so, what am I doing wrong?
    Thanks.

So, it may be better to create links in $APP_HOME/bin/java that point to the binaries in /usr/jdk/version-you-want-to-use/bin/sparcv9 rather than copying binaries.
To see current java links: (I edited all non-java-related links out of listing)
    -> ls -la /usr/bin/j*
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root other 15 Oct 1 2007 /usr/bin/jar -> ../java/bin/jar

BTW, on my machine (SunFire v445, Solaris10, 64-bit)
    isainfo -v produces this:
    -> isainfo -v
    64-bit sparcv9 applications
    vis2 vis
    32-bit sparc applications
    vis2 vis v8plus div32 mul32
So, what will this do for me?
or even better $(JAVA_HOME)/bin/`isainfo -v`/Edited by: SolarisSAinPA on Jun 12, 2008 5:38 PM

  • Solaris 8 installation in MS Virtual pc

Hi everybody ,iam new to solaris environment.Iam installing Solaris8 in virtual pc.
The message its showing is :please specify the media from which you will install the solaris operating environment.
I have selected the cd/dvd option as the source is the .iso image of the solaris s/w i downloaded from sun site.
But it is giving the same message even when i tried all the 3 CD images.
Can anybody suggest ....Thanks in advance.

Unless you have a specific need for solaris 8, solaris 10 x86 is much more installation friendly and is 100% backward binary compatible. Solaris 8 requires the DCA diskette (device config assistant) which is a floppy image.
Again, unless you have a reqirement for solaris 8, 10 is easier (no DCA, direct cdrom access, just works).
Another typical problem people experience with all of these downloads, though, is that they are not using the free Solaris Download Manager to retrieve the CD images. More often than not, when people get cd boot problems, it's not a good download. SDM can do connection retries, etc.
