Solaris 9 Automated Remote Shutdown

We have mixed server platforms at our company and not as many ups units as servers. We need to have a process of automatically notifying non-ups connected servers that they must shut down, once ups power is running low. We have found freeware for accomplishing remote shut-down for windows boxes but have seen nothing for solaris that can either be run from a windows box or a solaris box. Any suggestions?

Well... A lot of the new Sun servers have what is called "Lights Out Management" or a "Remote System Controller" (or was it "Console"? I always get that mixed up!)... These will allow you to powerdown the system remotely.
There is a little "but" to this though: you'll have to find a way to make your system's console port accesible through the network. Usually this is done through what is called a "terminal server" or "terminal concentrator". The firm Cyclades is a well known company who makes systems like these (although there are many many other companies as well).
By connecting your Sun's console port to the terminal server (which itself is connected to the network) you will be able to log in directly to your Sun from your Windows workstation. Most of these systems even let you use SSH for extra safety!
From the console you can hop through to the LOM or RSC prompt and tell the system to "power-off", which literally turns it off. Off course, this foregoes any form of proper shutdown, so you'll lose data and so on. Which leads me to this question: why do you not simply log in to the Sun system through the network and run a "shutdown" or "init" command?

  • Remote Shutdown problem

    Hi,
I am trying to shutdown (and restart) a Windows 7 (RC1) PC on my home network from another PC running Windows 7 (RC1). I am running the following command at a command prompt (I have tried with and without Administrator privilege):
    shutdown /r /f /m \\backup
Originally I was getting "Access Denied" but after searching the internet I disabled file sharing on the remote PC and I now get the following error message:
"backup: The entered computer name is not valid or remote shutdown is not supported on the target computer. Check the name and then try again or contact your system administrator. (53)"
I have also tried using the IP address and the result is the same.
I am using the same user name on both PCs, with the same password and the user is a member of the administrator group on both PCs. I have also checked the following policy settings on the remote PC:
Local Policies:User Rights Assignment:Access this computer from the network: Administrators...
Local Policies:User Rights Assignment:Force shutdown from a remote station: Administrators
    Local Policies:User Rights Assignment:Shutdown the system:Administrators
Local Policies:Security options:Network access: Sharing and security model for local accounts: Classic - local users authenticate as themselves
Local Policies:Security options:Shutdown:Allow system to be shutdown without having to log on.
Is there anything else to check?
    Thanks
    Patrick

I know this is a late response, but when I had the same problem, I discovered that the problem was the firewall setting related to File and Printer Sharing (SMB-IN).  That rule was disabled for the Public profile; I'm not sure what triggers that profile's
use over the Domain or Private because the machine is on a LAN with the Domain Controller.  When I enabled that rule, I was able to shutdown the servers.  The puzzling thing for me is that the rule seemed to be "disabled" on its own.
I distinctly remember shutting down all 6 of my servers.  Then 2 weeks ago, I could only shutdown 5.  This week I could only shutdown 4, so I had to enable this rule on 2 servers, and I don't know what would have caused that setting to be changed.
Obviously, if any firewalls change on their own, that would appear to be a large disconcerting bug.
Just to reiterate, the firewall rule which prevented me from remotely shutdown was the File and Printer Sharing (SMB-IN) Inbound Firewall rule associated with the Public profile.  I enabled it, and I could execute a remote shutdown command.

  • Remote shutdown Access Denied (5)

I have a computer that I want to shutdown remotely via command line (the shutdown -i), and if I have "password enable sharing" turned on I get access denied(5) but if that is turned off it works fine.
How can I get this working again?
I have read that I may need to create a user account with the same username and password of the account on this computer I wish to shutdown, but I have tried this and it does not work, plus having a extra account on either computer is kind of annoying,
isn't there a way I can do it without having the same user account on my two PCs? Maybe like just using the username and password of the remote computer directly without actually having that account created on my PC?

I am using this solution on a home Workgroup network.  Solution works for shutdown.exe and psshutdown.exe   It works for Windows 8 and should work for Windows 7.
The problem is access is denied when attempting a remote shutdown using the interactive mode or the following command:
    shutdown.exe /s /m \\COMPUTERNAME /t 00
    Result:
    COMPUTERNAME: Access is denied.(5)
CHANGE THE FOLLOWING SETTINGS ON THE REMOTE COMPUTER:
Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center, Change Advanced Sharing settings
"Private" enable "Turn on File and Printer sharing"
    Add Registry Key
    RUN regedt32.exe
    Goto:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Right click and add new DWORD
    "LocalAccountTokenFilterPolicy"=dword:00000001
When user name and password are not the same on both computers change the following on the remote computer:
    Change Local Security Policy
    RUN secpol.msc
Local Security Policy, Security Settings, Local Policies, User Rights Assignment
Add "Everyone" to "Force shutdown from a remote system"

  • Automated remote deployment

I'm looking for insight into deploying web apps from a dedicated build system to non clustered remote 9iAS Enterprise Edition instances using Ant. I know of four possible deployment mechanisms for OC4J:
admin.jar (OrionConsoleAdmin class)- I don't think this is an option as it does not synch conf changes with dcm
EM website - not an interface I wish to take time to warpper
dcmctl - must be run on the remote system but could be scripted such that archive is transfered and dcmctl invoked on the remote system
OC4JDcmServlet - distributed with JDev to be installed on the EM oc4j instance but the interface is not published and use does not seem to be supported by anything other than JDev.
Does anyone have any experience with successfully doing automated remote deployments using any of these (or some other) methods?
    Thanks in advance.

I am worked on this topic for a while and found MS Build can perform everything that other external tools can do.
MS Build is freeware and when we integrate it with Team city it does wonders!

  • Px4-300r - remote shutdown

Hi, I'd like to automate shutdown of a px4-300r.  The ideal would be to be able to do it from a remote control tied in to an automation system.  Turning it on is easy with WOL, but it's not clear if there is an easy way to turn it off.  I suppose an ssh shutdown command could do the trick but that doesn't seem too elegant.  I could also kill the power via a smart power strip, but that is less than ideal.  Any ideas?

    Hello avie
In the px4-300r's LifeLine firmware web interface there is an option to power off/on the unit on a schedule
It is located under All Features>Energy Savings>Enable Device Power Schedule.  you can set it to just power down on a schedule and use WOL to power on the unit when needed.

  • Solaris 9 remote login (ssh) drops connection

    Hello All,
I wonder if you can help me...
Let me give you some set-up details before I ask you the question.
I have Ultra-60 at home with Solaris 9 and recommended patch cluster installed. The machine is connected to a Linksys WAG54G ADSL router/modem through RJ45 ethernet cable. The router also has windows XP machine connected through RJ45 ethernet cable. I also have another windows XP machine that connects to the router over wireless connection.
I have opened up required ports on the router/port forwarding so that I can access the services remotely. I was first using default ports for http and ssh, but have now changed them to different ports - to be a bit more secure.
I have created a domain name through dyndns.org.
I have ssh running on the solaris 9 machine and has all the remote commands (rlogin, rsh, telnet) commented out in the /etc/inetd.conf and hence are not running on the machine.
I have a UK ADSL servise provider called Pipex.
Now lets get to the problem:
The whole purpose of the above set-up is that I want to access sun machine from work. The whole set-up works perfectly well - for a little while and then something strange happens. At work, when I connect to the sun machine, everything works fine and when I leave the session idle for 15-20 minutes (could be less time), the connection drops and then I can not connect to the machine for good couple of hours. When I say connection drops, I do not mean that system displays a logout message or something - There is no response from the server - pressing of return key does not do anything and eventually I get a message on windows pop up that connection is disconnected. If I try to retry, the client tries for a while and then says that connection timed out. Same thing happens if I use the IP address I use the right IP address as someone at home checks the router to confirms the correct IP address. This eliminates problem with domain name.
I have tried everything and can not work out what is causing this problem - the machine has all the 9_recommended patches. To narrow the problem down, I set up apache server on the sun machine. Today, when the connection dropped, I tried to connecting to the apache server and it failed - 'page can not be displayed' message on the internet explorer. However, after couple of minutes, I managed to get to the website but still can not get login prompt through ssh client.
What does that mean? Does it mean that server is playing up, or is it the sshd or is there any time out option in solaris 9... the strange thing is that I can access the web page - though it was not accessible at start when connection to ssh dropped out.
Could it be the router? The linksys do not come with a rule based firewall... so there is nothing that states that disconnects after some inactivity. The port forwarding is working as I do get to login to the server and to the web server. It can not be changing the default port numbers as the problem was there when there were standard ports being used.
It is not the link at my office as my friend, in a different company gets the same problem on my machine connects to it and after some in-activity, the connection drops and then he can not login for a long time.
It can not be the ADSL link as people at home can use the internet without any problem and they can access the sun machine locally.
It can not be the windows machines connected to the router as problem is there when windows machines are switched off dont know if windows would cause this, but just wanted to eliminate anything that I could think of.
One strange think that I did see yesterday was that, when I managed to login the last command showed that I was logged in throughout the time the time when I could not logged in . The error message in the /var/adm/messages stated something like socket error and connection reset by peer or something can not give you exact message right now as I can not login to the machine. The time on the message was couple of couple of minutes before I managed to login again and that time was the same as the time showed in last command is my logout time.
Does anyone know what is causing all this problem? Any pointers or help will be appreciated. If there is any place else that you think I can get the answer, please kindly let me know.

    Thanks...
    A few new developments....
    - I opened 2 sessions to the server, left one with no activity and in the other session, I ran iostat 1... The session with no activity got dropped and iostat one carried on... When the session dropped, I managed to login straight away... so no delay of couple of hours. May be because iostat was still running?
    - I now have an ftp server running on windows and I can access it even when connection drops out... right now I have no access to sun... but ftp server is running fine.
    - I enable remote router access and I can access that as well...
    - I enabled telnet and I can not access the sun with telnet either.
So, its either solaris 9 or the router.
Tomorrow, I will connect an another sun machine and then see if connection to both is dropped or just one. If it is to both then it must be router as the way ssh, telnet work is different to the way ftp work - as someone told me this today... so if other sun machine is not accessable then its not sol9 but router. The other machine has Sol 2.5.1 running.
Some one said that it could be that router is running out of translation table entries - but with so few connections? Or it could be that when there is no activity, router thinks that connection should be dropped - there is no open in the router setup which states that... Or Solaris has some timeout feature?
    More later.
    Kind Regards
    Ahmerin

  • Solaris 8 x86 Shutdown

    Hello,
I have installed the Solaris 8 Intel x86 edition. Now I have a (maybe silly) problem: I don't know how to shut down Solaris.
I am working with the CDE desktop. When I am logging out from there, the desktop is closed and the entrance panel for another CDE session appears. From this point, I don't find a way how to get a command prompt or a menu item for shutting down the solaris system for switching off the computer in a safe way.
When I am switching off the computer at the point of the entrance panel, this causes damages of the file system.
Inside CDE desktop, I cannot find a menu item for closing the CDE session and shutting down.
When I open a console within CDE and enter SHUTDOWN or HALT command, this ends the running Solaris but also damages the file system.
Can anybody tell me what the correct procedure is?
Thank you very much for your help!
    Thomas

    Hello,
I reinstalled Solaris 8 the same way as before, but now I always shutdown the system with init 5. So far, no problems with the file system occured. So I think the problem was the wrong shutdown methods I have used before.

  • Solaris 10: Remote Display of JDS rel 3 and CDE over Xwindows

On an Ultra 5 running Solaris 10, I want to start a session of either Java Desktop System Release 3 or CDE and display it on another system running an Xwindows server (running on a Windows box, but I don't think that matters). I also don't want to add a VNC layer to the picture.
The network communications are configured properly and are working fine as I can run Xwindows applications over it without a problem. The only thing to do before hand on the Ultra 5 is to set the DISPLAY environment variable (as expected).
What I would like to know is what commands to give at the command line to start the Java Desktop System Release 3 session to display the login screen on the system running the Xwindows server so I can run the full JDS from a remote client.
I would also like to know the same thing to run CDE this way.
I've tried a number of things which don't work so therefore this post. I've also looked around quite a bit for this information in a number of manuals and of course on the web and cannot find this information anywhere. I'm surprised because I would think a lot of people would want to do this, and it shouldn't be that hard to do!
    Any tips/pointers are appreciated! Thanks.

...I should add that I am trying to do this without using a display manager (i.e. XDMCP), may it is not possible?

  • Solaris 10 Remote Monitoring/Management

    Hi,
I have some Solaris 10 Servers that i'm currently able to administer/monitor locally but the company will be moving very soon and i'm looking into remote management. I'm wondering on machines such as X2100's where LOM software is automatically available how i could do remote management of the Solaris 10 boxes. I also have a V480 which we'd like to administer remotely.
If we should get some specific hardware to achieve this, please let me know what's out there and what would be appropriate.
I'm thinking of using OpenVPN for secure connections for regular operations on those boxes.
    Thanks,
    Charles

You can either connect to the LOM as suggested above, you will need to configure it prior to hooking the LOM to the network. I would caution you from putting a LOM port on an OPEN network connected to the internet.
You should have a VPN setup where you can connect to the VPN the connect to the LOM via ssh.
Once this is done, you will connect to the LOM and login, issue the command start /SP/console, reply y and you will be connected to the server. However this will give you a single connection only and can be kinda sluggish at times.
Once on the server you should (at a minimum) issue the following command 'netservices limited' this will sorta lockdown a server and limit network access. If you VPN in you should be able to connect to the server via SSH as well as the LOM. You should typically only use the LOM when the server is inaccessible. If you read the documentation on docs.sun.com you will find all the info you need for this to happen.

  • Using AppleScript to remotely shutdown a mail server?

    Hello all AppleScript gurus,
Here is the situation. My friend's company (it is a small company) uses a Linksys NAS 200 as a mail server. They recently purchased an APC BackUps 1000 Pro as the universal power supply (yes I am aware that it is not suitable for business purposes, but the boss is a cheapskate).
I would like to be able to shutdown the server remotely when the UPS tells the mac laptop (running 10.7.5) that power is being supplied by the battery. However, APC's software for OS X is nonexistant, and the options in energy saver in system prefs are limited.
Would it be possible to use AppleScript to send a message to the server to shutdown upon receiving a warning from the UPS? If so, how would this be accomplished?
Many thanks in advance in case I forget to say thank you again after. If further information is required, I'll do my best to supply the info.
    Thanks again.
    Ian

I'd figure out how to do the shutdown from the command line.  You then should be able to do this from an applescript.
There is some way of initiating an apple script on a remote machine but I do not know how.
What OS is the remote server using?
    Robert
