Solaris 9 Jumpstart Failure

Greetings.
I am in the process of changing a system over to Solaris 9 (9/04) from Solaris 8 (we cannot move to Solaris 10 due to ClearCase incompatiblities).
We use flash archives in our jumpstart process. The master system is created using a very Spartin profile (SUNWCreq with a number of other required packages). There are also a number of additional tweaks made to the master system to stop unrequired services, deamons, etc. The only additional patches installed are the Java cluster patches.
I have been able to successfully jumpstart the jumpstart server host from CD. However any attempts to jumpstart other clients using the jumpstart server have failed. I suspect that it is related to the inability to copy the sysidcfg file during the jumpstart process.
The address for the jumpstart server is 10.1.1.1; the hostname is n1; the MAC address is 0:3:ba:35:80:88
The address for the jumpstart client is 10.1.1.34; the hostname is n34; the MAC address is 0:3:ba:14:c6.
On the jumpstart server some of the relevant files are included below.
/etc/bootparams:
n34 root=n1:/jumpstart/OS/Solaris_9_2004-09/Solaris_9/Tools/Boot install=n1:/jumpstart/OS/Solaris_9_2004-09 boottype=:in sysid_config=n1:/jumpstart/Sysidcfg install_config=n1:/jumpstart rootopts=:rsize=32768

The IP address conflict is with the jumpstart server. The address for the jumpstart server is 10.1.1.1. The warning message is generated for a number of minutes after it starts. I figure that it is caused by the inability to copy the sysidcfg file.
This same system can be installed successfully using a Solaris 8 jumpstart configuration.
Note that the client system is currently installed with Solaris 8.
I did use the command "boot net -v - install" from the OK prompt, but no additional information was provided relating to when the sysidcfg file could not be copied.
If anyone has any ideas about what could be causing this problem or has any information about additional debugging which could be used to figure out this issue, I would greatly appreciate your thoughts.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
Jason.

Ideas.. Hmm, none which seems that correct, but you could try some things.
If it gets the wrong IP that could explain why it fails to copy the sysidcfg file.
First you could try and do a snoop on the ethernet address;
snoop ether 0:3:ba:14:c6:cd
(you could also try the -v flag to increase the verbosity).
The things you should look for are arp/rarp requests, the jumpstart client will use arp/rarp to determine its IP address, snoop will show you which server that responds, and what address it gets, futher more its a good idea to verify that the response to the bootparams requests comes from the correct server.
Of course there might be other oddnesses as well.
Was the data you provided extracts? If it was you should check the /etc/ethers and /etc/bootparams for duplicates entries, so there are no other occourances of the clients ehternet address in /etc/ethers, and no bogus entries starting with * or the same hostname in /etc/bootparams.
If you added the client manually you could always try and use the Tools/rm_install_client and Tools/add_install_client scripts to add it again, these script sometimes detect problems with the configuration.
Lastly you didn't show us your /etc/nsswitch.conf file, but i assume that it has "files" first for the ethers, hosts and bootparams entries?
Good luck

  • Best way to update a solaris jumpstart OS image.

    Hi all,.
Ive been recently building some v240's but have run into trouble with the rather out of date 02/02 instance of Solaris 8 (yes, i did say solaris 8 - it's a political thing..)
Anyhow, I have cd images of Solaris 8 02/04 and have a copy of the Sun Blueprints Jumpstart book by "Howard and Noordergraph".
On page 92, it says to use the "setup_install_server" script with the -b option for /jumpstart/OS/Solaris-xx-xx-xx.
Ive done that without any probs, then it goes on to say if you want an install server do the same command again without the -b switch.
Problem is that it spews out this message.
    733 root&#64;bbs00080 # ./setup_install_server -b /jumpstart/OS/Solaris_8_02-2004/
    Verifying target directory...
    setup_install_server:
The target directory /jumpstart/OS/Solaris_8_02-2004/ is not empty. Please choose an empty
directory or remove all files from the specified directory and run
    this program again.
So i chose an empty directory and it goes and does it.
    Is this an errata?
I already have /jumpstart/OS/Solaris_8_02-2002/ and I wanted to update the files so that I can boot the v240r.
Except 02/02 doesnt let me do that as it doesnt support the v240r arch.
Sun told me this, but I'm lost because my existing profile for this box, lists all the packages I want to install, but it whinges about not being able to find a .cdrom toc file.
I already have three flash archives which i created from good builds from 02/02, in my rules file which work, but this pesky update for the 240r is getting to be a little tricky.
So far, ive tried copying all the packages from 02/02/Products directory into 02/04/Products but some of them don't install despite being there.
Can anyone suggest the best way to update my 02/02 with the 02/04 boot loader for the v240?
Thanks in advance and sorry for any confusion.
    D.

I'm sorry. I meant. Say my array of x positions is 3, 4, 9. I change 9 to 30. How can I make the polygon see that change?

  • Solaris Deployment Failure for cannot resolve symbol on PersistentContainer

Hello, I'm having trouble diagnosing the following deployment failure.
What are some common causes of this? My server was created using an
Express Integration domain with some custom JMS destinations added
afterwards via the console. I am deploying an application built with
Workshop (straight from workshop). I copied over an application from
Windows to Solaris, deleted the .workshop directory and .beabuild.txt
and rebuilt the application to deploy.
I get this error a few times.

But by default WLS8.1 comes with jdk141_02 ...correct ?

It looks like this is a bug in the BEA-generated code that is then
compiled by WLS. The generated code was using the Class1$Class2 notation
to reference the class, but since $ is a valid character in the class
name, this does not behave as intended. This used to be a bug in
pre-1.4.2 but is now fixed in 1.4.2 (look at bug 4635044, and this is
also mentioned in the 1.4.2 release notes and the Java Developer forums).
    The generated code should be:
    com.bea.wlw.runtime.core.bean.BMPContainerBean.DuplicateKeyRemoteException
    not
    com.bea.wlw.runtime.core.bean.BMPContainerBean$DuplicateKeyRemoteException
Thanks again for the good response. I'll send this in to BEA support.

One other thing to add, this was fixed by changing the JAVA_HOME

Wow, you hit it right on target! I was using 1.4.2 then tried it on

Is this a bug in BEA or in the JDK? In either case, where should I
    report this bug?
    Thanks again

  • Solaris 10 Jumpstart error: panic - boot: boot: scratch memory overflow.

I am setting up a Solaris Jumpstart server using a Linux server as the Boot/Config/Install server. The Sun box I am using is a v120 that will be running Solaris 10 update 5.
After running the "boot net - install" command and running through the setup the install terminates with the error

I found a patch (111306-07) that supposedly fixes this problem (logged as bug 4411148). Is there a specific way to add a patch to Jumpstart so that it installs before the system reboots after the main install is done? I know the patches folder goes off of the added on date for the patch and not a patch_order file, does that mean it can just be placed in the folder and will be added automatically? Has anyone seen this error message before on their own systems?
Thanks in advance for any help.

You may also need to install the patch onto the installed OS, but that's less certain.
For the first part, find your jumpstart image and pass that into patchadd with the -C flag to patch the jumpstart portion.

  • Trying to configure RedHat Enterprise 4.3 linux jumpstart server

I am trying to configure a system under RedHat Enterprise 4.3 linux to jumpstart
a Sun Ultra 60 and install Solaris 9. Web pages and SysAdmin 4/2005 article
"Portable JumpStart Environment" have not addressed my problem. I am using
Internet Systems Consortium DHCP Server V3.0.1. The bootblock is
delivered to the sun client and executes.
The entries in dhcpd.conf conform to those published in various Web
pages and the article "Portable Jumpstart".
The Solaris 9 OS distribution is exported thus:
    /wks xxx.xx.xx.0/24(ro,wdelay,no_root_squash,mountpoint)
The load fails upon execution of .../Solaris_9/Tools/Boot/sbin/rcS
I think the problem may be with NFS. The mount request of the
    exported filesystem appears to work:
    rpc.mountd: authenticated mount request from sunxxx.xx.xx.xx:1023 for /wks/dist/sun/sparc/sunos5.9/9_404/Solaris_9/Tools/Boot (/wks)
    The first errors reported are:
    /sbin/rcS: /dev/null: cannot open
    /sbin/rcS: /dev/null cannot create
I have captured the conversation between the linux jumpstart server and
the Sun client using tcpdump: tcpdump -vvv -s 192 host server and client.
I am not highly skilled at interpreting the tcpdump output; the cause of
the failure is not obvious to me.
I have successfully used a jumpstart server under Solaris 9 for quite some time. ISC DHCP is deployed on the Solaris jumpstart server.
    Thank you,
    D. Castellano

While some have reported success doing this, I have heard of many failures. The common thread appears to be that when accessing device files, the Solaris client gets back something odd from the Linux NFS server.
Certainly this was the case for every attempt I knew about from a 2.2 kernel and earlier. I have see success reports, but do not have details about exactly which kernel or NFS patches were present.
This works fine from Network appliance and FreeBSD NFS servers, so I think there's some sticky point with the Linux NFS server that just doesn't handle the device files in the same manner.
See this newsgroup post (and the accompanying thread). It contains some discovered issues and some Linux servers that are reported to work.

  • How to launching a perl script by the "begin" script of a jumpstart

    Hi all,
i have an urgent pb with my solaris jumpstart, let me explain to you :
i want that the begin script launch some perl script, but i have a problem

    echo "Starting Ullink Configuration"

    /usr/bin/perl /cdrom/.archives/admin-scripts/sethostname.pl
EOFmy perl script use a STDIN
with this configuration, the perl script is launching but it runs in a loop indefinitely with an error "use of uninitialized value", because (i think) a value is return to the begin scritp and not to the perl script.
well, on a pre-installed solaris, if a launch the begin script, it happens the same thing, it runs in a loop, BUT if i comment the line "/bin/sh <<EOF" and "EOF", it works.
at this step, i say "ok it's cool my script is working", but when i use it during the jumpstart instalaltion, the perl script does not start, without any particular error.

  • Installing Solaris 10 on Sunfire V120 via network boot from Linux

I have been given a free SunFire V120 server loaded with and old copy of Solaris 9. The problem is that this server no longer has the internal DVD/CDRom drive any more. Google'd for finding a replacement CD-Rom drive show cost more than the SunFire V120 unit itself.
The plan: Install Solaris 10 for SPARC on Sunfire V120 Server
    Available:
    -- Sun Microsystems SunFire V120 Server (1GB of Ram and 2x 36GB 10K RPM SCSI3 drives)
    -- CentOS 5.1 Linux Server

-- DB25 to RJ45 Serial Cable accessing V120 LOM via Minicom application on CentOS 5 server
Via the http://www.docbert.org/Solaris/Jumpstart/linux.html site, I have configured the following:
    * NFS Server (nfs-utils under RedHat)
    * bootparams server (bootparamd under RedHat)

Anyone know where I can get the firmware (OBP) update / upgrade version 4.22 for the SunFire V120 server?
There is an old thread (http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?threadID=5137796) that talks of having to update your firmware 4.22.x, but I have looked through the SunSolve site and I cannot find a reference to this firmware any place for the SunFire V120 servers.

  • Installing Solaris via network

A few days ago I have got an old Sun server (Netra 1125).
I am fairly new to Sun hardware and I wonder if there is a way to install Solaris via serial cable and a TCP/IP network (I don't have a cdrom and I don't have vga or floppies).
I have a Linux machine nearby. Can I use BOOTP or something like that?
Can anybody point me to some documentation?

solaris' network install is called "jumpstart"
searching for "solaris jumpstart linux" on google provides some pages, in particular is this one that is pretty old (references sunos4) but should work... http://www.unixpeople.com/HOWTO/jumpstart_on_linux.html

  • Apple Powerbook with OS X as Jumpstart Server

In a month I will need to install Solaris 9 on multiple SUN servers via a jumpstart process. Now, I've done this a few times using a SUN server running SolarisOS. This time Im on a tight schedule since it requires going overseas to the client's site. I have 2 scenarios available to me:
    1. Jumpstart using an Intel laptop running VMware with Solaris distro
    or
    2. use an Apple Powerbook running Mac OS X 10.3.8 to install
I'd rather use #2 if I can since in scenario #1 the laptop is running MS Windoze (don't ask).
My understanding that the <b>install</b> server is easy since it only requires an NFS mount (supported by OS X). The problem lies in the <b>boot</b> server since there some differences/problems on OS X such as rarpd, etc.
I found this thread where a SUN engineer actually did try to use OS X -;)
    http://www.opendarwin.org/pipermail/hackers/2004-September/0 04753.html
Im asking for your you expert advise on this one:
Has anyone of you tried this before and if you have could you please post your comments/suggestions/solutions in this thread?
    Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
    Andrei T.

Here is an update from me(better later than never):
I ended up using Solaris9 though VMWare software on WindowsXP laptop and successfully jump started 7 Sun servers that way.
    Thank you, Chris Marget.
I have not given up on the idea using my powerbook as a Solaris jumpstart server .
Since I also own an Ultra10 workstation I will give it a try once I have more spare time. I'll try to keep you all posted on my progress.
    Best regards,

  • Frontend for jumpstart installations

    Hi
Does anybody know a good howto for configuring a frontend for solaris jumpstart installations?
    Thank you

What do you mean by frontend ?
a set of script ? something graphic ?
After the inital setting, the biggest job is to create the finish script where you install you framework on your client.

  • Problems using PXE boot to jumpstart an HP client

    Hello folks,
I have a Sparc jumpstart server that I am trying to use to jumpstart an HP with Solaris x86. I have gotten the x86 installation stuff installed by mounting the DVD on an x86 system and NFS exporting it to the jumpstart server. This seemed to work just fine.
My problem is PXE boot and DHCP. I have exported the appropriate directories, I have set up the DHCP service, and I can see on the client machine's console that it receives its IP address, but then I get the message "No filename or root path specified." I have a macro defined that points to the pxegrub file, and everything seems to be set up correctly. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I am missing?
    Edited by: user13373794 on Feb 10, 2011 11:24 AM

Well, we managed to solve the problem with DHCP and PXE boot on the HP Proliant, at least the problem I first posted above. We have run into another problem. Apparently, the problem we had was twofold. First there is some sort of bug in the HP that if there is an LOM on the system you can't use the first network interface to PXE boot, it produces the error message about not finding the filename or root path. So the solution to that was to switch to the second network interface and change the DHCP server to answer that MAC address.
Making changes to the DHCP config on the Solaris jumpstart server somehow made it stop serving IP addresses to the client. As a last ditch attempt we shut down DHCP with the svcadm command and restarted it. This fixed that problem and now the PXE boot finds the pxegrub files and the installation starts up.
Now there is a new problem. We want to do a hands-off jumpstart, but the system pops up an X window and asks for keyboard type and some network and timezone info, and a root password. Then the install seems to proceed to use the profiles listed in the rules.ok file on the jumpstart server. So it does seem to be getting some config options from the jumpstart server, but not enough to be completly hands-off. Is there something we can add to the rules file or beginning script or something to fix this? Anyone have experience or even just a good guess?

  • Network install target says RARP timeout, server says reply sent

I had an existing Solaris jumpstart install server that I initially tried setting up for DHCP, and then after much failure tried resetting it to used fixed IP on a different subnet.
I've done add_install_client (without the -d dhcp option) and made sure the correct entries were in /etc/ethers and /etc/hosts

Do any more request/reply pairs come through on the network trace?
So according to the server feedback, it looks like the RARP lookup is working, but the client isn't getting the response. If you get unlimited RARP request lines on the client, I'd agree. If they stop, then perhaps the system is hanging after the reply.
Can you do a 'test-net' on the client OBP and see that it can view network traffic? Has the machine been booted with some OS to verify the interface is functional for receiving traffic?

  • How can I make an image file from/to a V240 SPARC workstation?

Scenerio: I have 4 V240 SPARC Workstations on a network. 1 of these servers is set up the way I want it with all necessary applications and drivers. I had assistance from a number of good people to do this and now I want to preserve this scsi image and put it on all the other workstations. I have tried to use G4U but the SPARC system will not boot from the cd. This cd is usable on other x86 systems. Is there something different with "SPARC" as compared to "x86"? Is it possible to get some "freeware/shareware" software that will allow me to perform the similar functionality as G4U for the SPARC system? If not, how is imaging performed on SPARC and by what?
    Thanks in advance
    Pandah

SPARC and x86 have entirely different instruction sets. A SPARC system (as you found out), will not run x86 code.
Have you looked into Solaris Jumpstart technology?

  • Solaris HTTP - MS IIS EOF bug, timeout failures

    Greetings,
Experiencing what appears to be an "HTTP EOF" problem
running on Solaris 2.7 (Apache ws) for several months.
When my Perl script requests image files, from select remote
servers, the requests hang as if waiting on the last packet to be received.
The images are exclusivly owned by the people that run my cgi script. This
    is strictly enforced.
Problem is recreated it using LWP, WGET and LYNX,all fail
the same way. (please see trace data below)
I have a simple script with blocks of urls from several sites
using LYNX with trace on that shows the failure every time.
    (please see below)
It works on all non Solaris platforms that I, and others, have tried
    (WIN, AIX, etc)
An HTTP 200 is always recieved, with the proper length specified in the
    headers.
The hang occurs on what appears to be the last packet (as seen from
    LYNX trace)
Sometiimes requests complete after several minutes, with a partial image
file. Occasionally a few requests work fine.
I've seen other newsgroup appends with the exact problem, no solution
Others equate the problem strictly with requests from Solaris to an MS
web server (see related append below)
I can't get my web hosting company to move on this, they've run my
sample app and agree "there's a problem". I've appended this on several
newsgroups in the past, others have run my script, lot of discussion and agreement that there's a problem but to date no solutions.
Looks like an operating system bug to me.
I've tried searching Sun's site for a possible answer but got lost each
time. Not sure how to searh for known fixes, assume I can't open a problem report since I don't own the OS license.
Another related append is included below along with my test script and
    trace output.
Any assistance or advice is most appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Steve Borruso
From a libwww newsgroup append .....On Solaris, an LWP request sometimes fails (ie. reports a server error)
when the server is fine, b/c of some interaction between the OS and the
server response. (See below for more info.) In fact, LWP is receiving data,
but the data is improperly terminated and LWP times out.
There is an interaction between Solaris and certain web servers (notably
Microsoft-IIS/4.0) where the response to a GET comes back improperly
terminated. You can observe this independently of LWP by doing a "telnet
    www.ndu.edu 80",
    and then "GET http://www.ndu.edu/ndu/inss/strforum/forum83.html"
You will see telnet receive the response (it's a 404), but then (usually
but not always) fail to terminate. As far as I know, you will only see this
on Solaris (I'm on Solaris 7, have heard similar problems w/ 6); I've tried
same under Linux and haven't seen this problem. I have seen this on a
    number of other sites.

  • Unattended  Solaris 10 installation with jumpstart server issue

    Hello,
I have setup a jumpstart server and am finding it difficult to get a fully unattended solaris 10 sparc 10/09 install on a t1000 client. The console connection to the client goes into interactive mode at the point in system identification when the installer asks if the system is networked or non-networked, and runs a setup of default time zone and date/time. Using esc-2 to advance through the interactive menu it asks if ithe system is on a subnet, for the netmask (which is there as default), asks if the current time is correct, then asks me to confirm that my selections are correct. When I confirm it goes on it's merry way to finish the installation unattended.
My guess is it does not like one of the values in the sysidcfg file being used, but can't seem to see where the problem is. I don't see anything in the table of sysidcfg keywords from the online docs that specify networked or not, and I am using the network_interface keyword to define hostname, ip, default router, netmask and ipv6, and thought that should take care of the networking portion of system identification, also have timezone and time server set.
Could it be that I am configuring an ethernet port that is not connected (bge0)? This computer will be deployed on a DMZ type network, and the jumpstart server is located on a different network our internal private network. The jumpstart installation via the server is done by using a temporary ethernet connection on a second interface of the client. One other note the defined time server is on the dmz so the installation program won't see it.
Any suggestions on what might be causing the interactive installer to kick in?
Here is the sysidcfg used for the client:
    more sysidcfg_vlan3/sysidcfg
    keyboard=US-English
    terminal=vt100
    security_policy=NONE
    system_locale=en_US
    install_locale=en_US
    timeserver=service-time
    timezone=US/Eastern
    network_interface=bge0 {hostname=D-Wade.xxx.xxxx.xxx default_route=xx.xx.xxx.1 ip_address=xx.xx.xxx..3 netmask=255.255.255.0 protocol_ipv6=no}
    name_service=NONE
    nfs4_domain=dynamic
    root_password=someEncryptedValue
    service_profile=limited_net
    Thanks,
    John

update. Fixed the problem with date/time by using abrante's suggestion of setting the time server to localhost. Don't get prompted for date/time information in the interactive installer any more.
If I setup the sysidcfg file to configure the ethernet port being used to communicate with the jumpstart server (bge1), using an ip and netmask that is on the jumpstart server network, the installation goes through fully un-attended.
Is there any way to get a second interface (in this case bge0) configured with ip/netmask values that are not part of the jumpstart server's network, using a non interactive jumpstart installation? Using these values in sysidcfg, the only things prompted for during the installation are, Is the system on a subnet, and what is the netmask. Anyone know what the sysidcfg part of the installation does to check the validity of a netmask value given in the sysidcfg file on the jumpstart server?
If need be, I guess the interface could be configured in the finish script.
