Solaris equivalent of kill -16 in linux

i am running a process in solaris 9(console) . i know its pid . To halt the process i have given "kill -16 pidvalue" . This halts the process . Later when i gave the same command (ie . kill -16 pidvalue )it resumes (continues)the process .
While giving the same command ( ie . kill -16 pidvalue ) in Linux the process corresponding to the pid value gets permanantly killed ( ie the process becomes nonexistant ) , so next time when i am giving the command (kill -16 pidvalue) in Linux i get an error message on console which says " process is nonexistant " .
So can u suggest the appropriate numeric value or alphabet which should follow kill to halt the process in Linux. In a way i am looking for "solaris equivalent of kill -16 in linux ".

kill -STOP
kill -CONT
should work on both.
I don't know why -16 (USR1) would work on Solaris 9.

  • Migration from Oracle 10.2.0.3 (Solaris) to 11.2.0.3 (Linux)

I have to migrate and upgrade database from Oracle 10.2.0.3 (Solaris) to 11.2.0.3 (Linux). I know I can use datapump and TTS to migrate data. My steps would be Install oracle 11.2.0.3 binaries on Linux box and create the database with same name on Solaris box and imp the data. My question is If I import the data from 10.2 DB, Will I face any issue or any problem besides invalid objects ?????? Or can you give brief steps.???? Any help will be appreciated ..
    Thanks

    Hi Friend
    Five Methods..
    1) Database Upgrade Assistant (DBUA)
    2) Manual UpgradeDBUA and manual upgrade scripts can only be used when there is no platform change. If a platform change is included, the data will have to be moved across OS versions using one of the 3 methods below.
    3) Export/Import
    4) Data Copying
    5) Golden Gate
Note 1 : Export/Import works for all versions. But for 10g and above, DataPump or Transportable Table Spaces methods are better.
Note 2 : you may need to perform additional pre-upgrade steps (adjust the parameter file for the upgrade, remove obsolete initialization parameters and adjust initialization parameters that might cause upgrade problems).

  • Solaris 10 - impressions from a GNU/Linux user

Firstly, this isnt flame bait, honest!
Until 10, I hadnt seen Solaris since rev6, then, I was worn (then) down by trying to configure a dial up model hacking chap scripts. Anyhow, I thought I'd look at Solaris 10, seeing as it was 'free' to play with. What follows summarises my feelings after looking at it again.
Download and install went smoothly, even the accompanying freeware DVD was installed in its entiretly to add all that utility/application-candy that makes a platform usable, or more than usable.
OK, so the java desktop is actually pretty good but now what? There is a dearth of anything useful in the distribution, all but the cut down linux distros come with a wide range of applications and supporting tools, they 'just work', and cusomizing program access paths to include all the freeware bin folders etc etc is not necessary, unlike Solaris with its truly painful packaging structure.
Solaris seems to have changed a great deal since I last used it, but as I spend most days running Linux development and deployment systems I had some expectations of what I should (by now) be able to do with Solaris. After observing the lack of configuration files I stumbled accross the web 'tool' to do the configuration (there were no default desktop shortcuts, no menu links, nothing - even under CDE), I was beginning to get that '6' feeling again.
What do people do after an install, they configure the network and set the hostname up.
I personally found the network configuration a royal pain. Using any other linux distro (suse and its yast configurator, gnome or kde configuration tools etc) all make the experience painless.
For the gigabytes of downloads I kind of expected something that would be useful out of the box. Yes, I can go and download xyz from sun freeware one package at a time but COME ON! After using Debian based UBUNTU perhaps Im spoiled by the Synaptic package manager. I was honestly shocked, thinking there must be something I'm missing but once again I could not find a single reason to switch to Solaris for my use (development, or deployment).
Im sure there are those who would tout Solaris as rugged, scalable, secure etc but all of that is irrelavent to me and my usage. From my perspective the targetted user base for Solaris appears to be narrow.
I can appreciate the licencing issues involved and that may indeed be the reason why many additional tools arent provided. In any event, I cant think of any reason to keep Solaris 10 installed, I can do everything I need with Linux with less effort thanks to the range of GNU/open source apps readily available.
If it works for you thats great, Im sure there will be plenty of points and my lack of time spent (a) reading (b) configuring (c) dowloading and compiling, but to be honest, I havent got the time!

compiing packages one at a time is possible but is
prone to non-trivial issues over symbols etc etc.
Never mind it takes time to find the source package
from website x, install the package, compile the
package, fixup your paths ready for running, try and
figure out if the app needs an icon in the menus -
and figure out how to do that too.Or, as you mentioned you could use Sunfreeware or the Companion CD with the caveat that you've already mentioned.
Contrast this method with the APT/Synaptic package
manager a) search by keyword for app (eg firewall)
from multiple repositories with thousands of
applications etc, select and hit go, it resolves its
own dependencies, it downloads, it installs, it just
runs, its integrated immediately with no further
    effort. Blinding!Must be nice!
There are some apps that actually do this on Solaris. If they use the Midnight Commander shell on the download page I've had things like version 2 of Nessus configure, compile and install itself automatically.
These are few and far between though.
What I expected to do with Solaris is to be able to
configure it quickly and painlessly (nope), to be
able to install categories of apps I know I want but
dont immediately know where they are stored, maybe
sunfreeware.com maybe not (nope, no package manager
or anything similar), to be able to not care about 'I
need this library or that library' to resolve
dependencies and just install it! (nope). As I said,
I guess Im spoilled by APT/Synaptic, its a killer app
for the platform, making it more than useful. For Solaris I'm not aware of anything close to what you're describing.
compilers, apache, tomcat, evolution for M$Exchange
email intergration, eclipse even, never mind media
players & codecs. All without so much as a website
trawl/comipile/fixup cycle.I've heard that the Companion CD along with the Java Desktop Environment should get you most of what is listed above, but that uses the Companion CD and the caveat.
GNU/Linux experience. I asked myself the question,
how much effort would I have to put in to get running
at least a good portion of what I currently have? The
answer that led to my post was too much. From what you're describing it isn't that it couldn't be done, the issue is that it could be done, but going forward with Solaris would be more work than what you're currently doing, not a bad assumption.

My Development server is on Sun solaris 10 and need to change the OS SUSE linux 10.
1.This is migration activity or Heteogenues copy.
This is a heterogeneous system copy.
    please provide your expert guidelines.
Since it´s a heterogeneous copy you need to have a certified migration consultant on-site, otherwise you will loose support for the target system (see the FAQ at http://service.sap.com/osdbmigration).
Database is Oracle 10.2.0.2 .(only need to change the os not database)
I´d use the R3load method. This will give you a "free reorganization". There are however other ways of doing that (transportable tablespaces).
Be aware that Solaris on SPARC is a BigEndian platform whereas Linux is implemented as LittleEndian - so if you exchange binary data with other systems they need to be aware of that fact.

What could I do to make it work properly on Solaris 9 on Sparc ?
    Thanks for your help.

You should have no problems if both are using Sun's Java Runtime enviroment. I believe there are some problems with Microsofts implementation of Java, but I don't know exactly what.

  • Solaris Express , Developer Edition as a linux alternative

    Hi Folks,
there is no doubt that Solaris began shining lately . I'm thinking to install it on my laptop as an alternative to linux to develop web applications .
some issues are bothering my a lot, I'll name them to you ,so we can decide together :
    1. ruby official website does not provide a solaris package, how to develop Rails websites then ?
    2. Mono has no official package for x86 machines running solaris , only Solaris 8 (Sparc) is supported .
I'm very interested in Solaris, especially Developer edition , eager to start to installing it !
    what do you think ?

I think I hope it installs, especially on a laptop system. It failes to install on every desktop system here, I wouldn't dare put it in my laptop and see what it says. Laptops usually have a more esoteric hardware configuration than desktop systems.
For you I really don't see the benefit of switching operating systems just to develop web applications. If you were a Java developer developing J2EE web applications then Solaris and it's integrated Java Enterprise system and first-rate developer tools would be a great change, but for Ruby on Rails and Mono - I don't see the point.
For Ruby there may be a package available, check the OpenSolaris website and see if it has been ported over (it most probably has been, but I haven't checked yet).
For Mono... I don't see the point in developing .NET web applications for Linux/Solaris, so I won't go there. Mono is a joke compared to Microsoft's .NET platform.

  • HELP!!  Solaris 10 - Mount NFSv4 Share from Linux using Kerberos Security

Greetings all, my apologies if this post is in the wrong place...
I have an issue getting Solaris 10 to mount an NFSv4 share from a SuSE Linux 10 machine using kerberos security.
I am able to mount the NFSv4 share from another SuSE 10 machine. The kerberos principal for that is nfs/host.domain and is working perfectly with the mount command of 'mount -t nfs4 -o sec=krb5 host:/ /mnt'
My problem is that when I try to mount that same share on Solaris 10 using the command 'mount -F nfs -o sec=krb5 host:/ /mnt' I am getting nowhere fast. My kerberos principals for the Solaris machine are nfs/host.domain, host/host.domain, and root/host.domain. I have tried rebooting the Solaris 10 machine with a different keytab file in place each time (as I'm not sure which principal to make the keytab from for Solaris).
When I run the Solaris 10 mount command all it does is hang. I don't get any error message, etc. On the kerberos server I can see where the Solaris machine has communicated and appears to receive a ticket, and I can see that the NFS server was responding to the client's request, however the mount command just hangs.
Any ideas / suggestions? I really need someone to point me in the right direction!
    Your help is very appreciated!

I had similar, not identical, issues with a custom JumpStart DVD I was creating. I was not using flar and it was for x86, not SPARC.
I found that changing the case for the value assigned to network_interface made a difference. In looking at the sysidcfg manpage and online JumpStart documentation, all the examples they used had capitalized "PRIMARY" and "NONE". When I changed the value to the capitalized equivelant, my particular issue had gone away.
You may also want to consider adding ip_address and default_route to the network_interface section. Test either way to identify the differing results.
In my particular scenereo, I did not want any networking configuration to be done. The resulting line in sysidcfg was:
    network_interface=NONE {hostname=jsclient}HTH

  • Migrating database from 10.2.0.3 on solaris to 10.2.0.5 Linux

    Hi All,
I'm a beginner and I need your suggestions,
I have a database of size 1TB and version 10.2.0.3 on solaris. Now, I need to migrate that database to linux of version 10.2.0.5.
As, this is big database I thought of using rman convert and data pump. But, I'm stuck at single point, might be silly...
As I know rman convert works only on same versions would this situation be a problem ( I know the underlying version is 10g but it differs in patch set )
even the patch set also matters with rman convert
So, I'm left with 2 options
    1. Install 10.2.0.3 binaries on Linux , Move the data and then apply the patch set to upgrade
    2. Install 10.2.0.5 binaries on linux and move the data (assuming that patch set doesn't matter)
So, Please suggest me the best option to proceed..
    Thanks

    Hi,
I'm stuck at other point in migration while using transport tablespaces. I have already created database on target and started migration. I did at test on few tablespaces which are self-contained and they got transported successfully. But I have few tablespaces which are not self-contained. Can you please help me how can I transport such tablespaces?
    Below are the details,
    I'm transporting a tablespace USERS01 on source,
I executed dbms_tts.transport_set_check procedure and ran the following querry,
    select * from TRANSPORT_SET_VIOLATIONS;
The output of that query, I just gave the part of my output
    VIOLATIONS
Index RERATE.RATEREV_PARMGRP_PK in tablespace USERS01 points to table RERATE.RAT
    EREV_PARMGRP in tablespace RR_DATAINDX_SM01
Index RERATE.RATEREV_PRDALOW_PK in tablespace USERS01 points to table RERATE.RAT
    EREV_PRDALOW in tablespace RR_DATAINDX_SM01
Index RERATE.RATEREV_RTFMLABTYP_PK in tablespace USERS01 points to table RERATE.
    RATEREV_RTFMLBTYP in tablespace RR_DATAINDX_SM01
Index RERATE.RATEREV_STALWCO_PK in tablespace USERS01 points to table RERATE.RAT
    EREV_STALWCO in tablespace RR_DATAINDX_SM01
So, USERS01 tablespaces is not self -contained. So , I rman convert on these tablespaces at a time. But couldn't succeed in exporting/importing.
I'm able to run the export and import but nothing is being imported.
    ex: expdp system/password transport_tablespaces=(users01,RR_DATAINDX_SM01) dumpfile=expdp.dmp logfile=expdp.log directory=datapump_dir &
When I tried to check on the destination but couldn't find anything.
Can you please help me how can I transport the tablespaces which are not self-contained
    Thanks

  • Migrating from 8.1.7 (on Solaris) to 10.2.0 (to Linux/Windows)

    Hi,
Our company is considering to migrate our database from 8.1.7 (on Solaris) to 10.2.0 (on either Linux or Windows). Currently, I'm testing on migrating our database from 8.1.7.0.0 (on Solaris) to 10.2.0 (on Windows 2000 Advanced Server). I checked the 8i menu and found I cannot take advantage of "transportable tablespace" due to different platforms. I also tried to export and import the schemas but failed due to complicated referential integrity constraints among those schemas. Just wondering is there any other way I can try in order to migrate the database to 10.2.0 on a Windows platform successfully?
    Any input will be appreciated!

Add this paramter CONSTRAINTS=NO while exporting, could be one solution.

  • Linux guy wants to install solaris 10 via nfs using centos as nfs server

well in linux when installing this way I simply copy the dvd install image to an nfs share (or do mount -o loop "isoimage" /nfsmountdir), copy the boot.iso so a cdrom and do a "linux askmethod" during install and then specify the nfs server and dir.
I want to learn sun and want to start by really understanding the install and how to set up slices etc. I would really like to do this using nfs using my centos box as the server as this method at least when installing linux is much mush faster.
so can I do this and if so what are the commands. I did see some documentation but it was for installing from a sun nfs server. but I need to install from the centos as the server. I already have the iso's for the 5 cdroms as well as the dvd image. if possible I would obviously like to use the dvd image.
thanks and remember I am a sun newbie (just bought my first solaris book this week so the more dummied down answer would be the best one for me). if it can be done could you give me the exact process.
    thanks a million (and one).

The Sun network installer scripts only work on Solaris. So there's no instructions from Sun for configuring the daemons on Linux necessary to do the configuration.
There are some guides on the net, but I don't know of one that tells the whole story.
You might consider installing Solaris in a VM on the linux box, then configuring jumpstart on that. You could then see how the daemons on it are configured and replicate that configuration on the Linux machine.

  • LINUX x86 32b vs Solaris 64b - 10.2.0.2 - advice

Soon I am going to have to make a recommendation to my management about whether or not we should migrate from out LINUX32b environment (Dell Poweredge) to Solaris 64b on a SUN server. We are running 10.2.0.2 on RHEL 4 - 32b hughmem kernel. The company I work for has gone through an explosive growth phase in the past year and has outgrown their oracle hardware infrastructure. I have found that running 10.2.0.2 on LINUXx86 has been a nightmare - bug after bug after bug, severe memory leaks - especially running Oracle's ASM. In the past I have always used Sun Solaris and have had very few OS-related problems. My question is - is it just the 10.2.0.2 showing the usual latest release bugginess, or is it the LINUXx86 OS? Is Solaris 64b any better? Does LINUX 64b work OK with 10G? I've been experiencing things like the server completely shutting down unexpectedly - and while no errors were thrown, and nothing showed up on the Dell Dx my gut feeling tells me it happened because an ASM diskgroup ran out of space. This is, of course, intolerable. But, before I push for Solaris, I want to make sure I'm not jumping out of one frying pan into another. Plus - I've found that Oracle's support on the LINUX platform is weak. Any advice or experiences to share?

First thing , that want to say is play safe. Don't jump into conclusion take your to evaluate.
Do you think, you will not get any issue one you move to Solaris ?
Have you applied all the CPU patch ?
Don't use new technologies as soon as it introduce , wait for some time so it become mature. I make Thump rule to keep 1 level below then current version of oracle, but keep eye on all the development and feedback of current version. If very much needed like bug hitting badly and that fixed in new version then only go for new version and always apply CPU patch because it has most of the major known issue fixes.
When world is moving to Linux, you moving to Solaris ( There are some exception , some major database are on TRU 64 / Solaris ). If you have hardware issue go for Linux RAC.
I've found that Oracle's support on the LINUX platform is weak. Its not true , in fact it is observed first patch / release come for Linux only.
and oracle come with his own Linux OEL ( Oracle Enterprise Linux ).

  • Performance (Linux or Solaris)

    Hi folks,
We have been asked by many clients which performs better / faster (Linux vs Solaris).
    The environment is:
    Intel Xeon Server Hardware
Local Disk (SAS) - RAID 5
    Single Server install
    Single Location
    VirtualBox as Hypervisor
I am asking for your feedback / experience with Linux vs Solaris implementing VDI 3.4.1

    Hi,
we have done some extensive testing on this. One of our clients had some severe issues with performance on Linux after a migration from solaris to linux (on the same hardware) the system load/utilization went up by a factor of 4-5 (server could easily handle 200 sessions with solaris and only 40-50 with linux). We never managed to find the root cause (or a solution) for this and migrated back to solaris.
But we tried to replicate this issue in the lab (without success). So what we did was this:
Install Solaris 10 and Linux on one hard drive each and also install SRS 5.3.1 (we also tried this with a few older versions). We set up kiosk sessions to connect to a windows terminal server (we did not bother to compare virtualbox perfoamce) and launch a web browser to a website with loads of flash and moving content. We had about 20 DTUs connect to this server and monitored the system load, utilization and so on of the Xnewt processes. At one point we also automatically started some audio stream to measure the performance of utaudiod. The result (for 2 different servers) was that linux and solaris are really close to each other in performance terms. Solaris showed a little less utilization, about 5-10% maybe. But really quite negligable.
Long story short: we have seen really poor performance with linux once but in all other cases linux performed almost as well as solaris. And we never compared the virtualbox hypervisors which might be yet another story.

    Kindly share ur ideas

I need to migrate a DB from solaris to linux without shutdown the solaris DB.I would like to know the backup using RMAN Transportable tablespace in solaris and migrate it to dest(Linux).
Kindly share ur ideasIt is very much possible. In fact I transfered DB from sunos to Windows. But this is not a backup process using RMAN. RMAN is used to change the endianness of datafile so that it is in format which is required by Windows format. This transfer is possible using the data pump utility(IMPDP). There are many threads on the forum for this topic. Seek help from other threads.
