Solution for MacBook Pro Sharp Edges

OK. Got my macbook pro 15" and it is very nice. Only thing is the edge of the computer is very sharp compared to my older MacBook which had the rubber on the edges. The edges now cut into my palms and arms.
Fortunately, I found something that worked. I wish Apple would consider this problem when they designed the new MacBooks. I shouldn't have to pay for something extra to make the form be functional.
For those who want to know: Found it on an online auction site (we all know which site i'm talking about). Under the title: MacBook Pro 15" sharp edge adhesive strip.
Hope this is useful for those going through the same problem I am.

Found it for cheaper at guardstrip dot com. Could have saved myself a couple of bucks. Guess everyone else who needs it will benefit from the savings but me. Enjoy!

  • Back and sharing solution for Macbook Pro - Synology or Time Capsule?

    Hi
    Hi,
My plan is to have a complete new efficient and flexible set up. I have decided to buy the new Macbook 13inch Pro with 16MB Ram and 3.1 Ghz i7 processor with 256GB glash drive.
I want an external solution for my storage and sharing needs.
    Minimum requirements -
    - Time Machine backup support for computer
    - External storage for 95% of my data (kind of like dropbox) including music, movies, photos, business and personal data, but that can be accessed easily and quickly and functions properly on my computer. (e.g when connecting to itunes and other apps)
    - Remote access to this data when required
    Additional Preferences
    - Easy to use (I am a newbie on Mac laptops!)
    - Back up additional devices or at least upload photos from ipad and iphone
    - Connect movies to Roku
    - Easy access to data wirelessly from outside the country
    - Support external plugin hard drive
    - Quiet and low power consumption
I like the flexibility of the Synology but I know that apple usually works best with apple devices, so due to my inexperience in the apple environment I need a little help.
Is the Synology best for my needs (if so which model) or the Time Capsule and just plug in my usb hard drive? (I don't want to spend a fortune but $100 more for the best set up is acceptable)
Thanks so much for your help
    Mike

A third-party NAS is unsuitable for use with Time Machine, especially if it's your only backup. I know this isn't what you want to hear. I know that Time Machine accepts the NAS as a backup destination. I know that the manufacturer says the device will work with Time Machine, and I also know that it usually seems to work. Except when you try to restore, and find that you can't.
Apple has published a specification for network devices that work with Time Machine. None of the third-party NAS vendors, as far as I know, meets that specification. They all use the incomplete, obsolete Netatalk implementation of Apple Filing Protocol.
If you want network backup, use as the destination either an Apple Time Capsule or an external storage device connected to another Mac or to an 802.11ac AirPort base station. Only the 802.11ac base stations support Time Machine, not any older model.
Otherwise, don't use Time Machine at all. There are other ways to back up, though none of them is anywhere near as efficient or as well integrated with OS X. I don't have a specific recommendation.
If you're determined to use the NAS with Time Machine, your only recourse for any problems that result is to the manufacturer (which will blame Apple, or you, or anyone but itself.)

  • A solution for macbook pro sleep issue

I had a very annoying problem with my ~1 year old MBP.  When I closed the lid, about 50% of the time the computer would not wake up after reopening the lid. The screen would just stay black and there would be no responsiveness from the keyboard or trackpad.  I looked up the problem on google and found that many, many people had the same issue and could not find a single solution that worked for me.  I called apple support and there suggestion was to reinstall the OS, which I did not want to do.  They also suggested booting off the installation disk, but I didn't want to spend time trying to track down an intermittent problem.  The solution that worked for me was as follows:
in the preferences tab under security there is an option 'use secure virtual memory'; if you are using a password, this option is grayed out.  you can leave this option checked, but it's important to know whether you are using secure VM or not.
the next step is to go the terminal and type
    pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
you will see a number pop up, from 0 to 7.  the meaning off the numbers is as follows:
0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
5 - This is the same as mode 1, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory (in System Preferences -> Security).
7 - This is the same as mode 3, but it’s for those using secure virtual memory.
I had 3 selected and this was causing me all the problems because I should have had it at 7, which is the option compatible with secure VM.  to change it, simply type
    sudo pmset -a hibernatemode 7
That's it!  I tried setting it to 0, but this did not solve my problem. Hopefully, this solution will hold up, but I haven't had any problems thus far.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into a message.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

Terribly sorry Joseph Kriz. I had absolutley no intention of annoying anyone. This was the first time I have been communicating in a discussion group, and as I wrote my comments I had no idea how my typing would reflect and where my question would be going. Hope my unintentional typing will be forgiven and causes no further agitation. The only additional comment I can make on your response is that "I do not use capital letters or CAPS LOCK while I try to enter my administrator password". To Airdrop between a Mac an iOS device
    System Requirements
To see if your Mac works with AirDrop, make sure you’re in the Finder by clicking the desktop (the background area of your screen), or by clicking the Finder icon in the Dock. Then, check to see if AirDrop is listed as an option in the Go menu. If you don't see AirDrop listed, your Mac doesn't support this feature.
In order to transfer files between a Mac and and an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
your iOS device needs to include a lightning connector
your iOS device needs iOS 7 or later installed
your Mac needs to be a 2012 or later model with OS X Yosemite installed
Your Mac and iOS device both need bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on. You do not have to be connected to a specific Wi-Fi network.
To transfer files between two Mac computers, you need the Mac models listed below with Wi-Fi turned on and OS X Lion or later installed.

  • Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Im completely new to Mac. Im swapping my windows laptop for macbook pro and looking for network storage solution which the Time Capsule seems to do. Is it possible to use this as NAS for my desktop Windows PC - windows 7

Broadly speaking I want some sort of network storage( wireless or through my existing wifi router) that I can access files for both my windows PC and Macbook and also to access files to my iPad/ iPhone. Some sort of backup and sychronisation so that I can access certain files remotely.
Buy a real NAS.. synology or QNAP are the standard... although companies like Netgear and Western Digital and Seagate make them as well.
There is no problem sharing between Mac and PC now.. you do not even need a NAS to do that.. you simply share the hard disk directly. Mac talk SMB.. everything talks SMB nowadays.. so it is easy.
ipad and iphone are not designed to use NAS.. they are designed to backup only to the cloud or itunes.. but you can load an app like file browser if you want.
    http://www.stratospherix.com/products/filebrowser/
Remote access to the Apple TC is somewhere between difficult, to impossible from a PC.. Apple use BTMM and iCloud but the service is not offered to PC.
A real NAS will offer HTTPS or SFTP or several other methods.. that both Mac and PC can use.
You simply plug it into the current wireless router.. it is a network device and assessable over the network. It is not necessary to buy another router.. in fact that is a waste.

    Hello PoojaP,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums!
Regarding the software for the Officejet 7500a Wide Format, there is not any Full Feature Software and Drivers available from us. With that said, you will be able to download and install the Apple driver package.

  • The normal value of battery capacity for macbook pro

    Hi there,
I noticed my battery full charge capacity value is way below the technical specification from Apple.
    For macbook pro 15" early 2011 version a 77.5W battery is built-in.
However, so far after 4 cycle, my full charge capacity is 6913mAh.
It seems that I missed something. Though I didn't really notice the initial value when it's brandnew.
Statistically what's the average value of the new battery will be ? around 75W or 7500mAh? Any idea?

  • I bought the wrong version as I need it for macbook pro but somehow bought windows...help

I guess I will have to wait until normal office hours.  I have no idea why it bought the window version as I did not realize that is what was selected.  I hope I can get it exchanged for the photoshop elements 13 for macbook pro retina display.     Anyone know if this is an easy switch and one they will do?

When buying HD versions of shows, only the HD copy will automatically download now (probably due to requests from people who don't need/want the SD version and complained about it being forced on them). The SD copy can be downloaded from your purchases area in iTunes, though. On the main iTunes Store page, go to Purchases under the Quick Links and then select TV shows. Click the "Not On This Computer" button. Uncheck the "Download HD when available" box and you should then see the SD copies of the shows and be able to download them.
    Regards.

  • How can I know if my new internal hd for macbook pro is compatible?

I have been trying to upgrade my internal HD for macbook pro early 2008 2.4 and have been having a hard time getting it to boot.  Problems with both WD and Seagate.  I am wondering if the problem is with Mavericks.  I got a good back up from Time Machine to load on the hybrid drive.  Then when I try to restart it shows the apply symbol with no chime and then a black screen comes over the blue screen with some code (strange problem I have never seen) I can see that all the data is on the drive.  I was able to partitian in disk utility.  Anything ringing a bell.  I have done several switches like this and this is the first time I have had so much trouble.  I reinstalled my old drive just to make sure there was not another hardward issue and everything is fine there.  In fact I have a new logic board freshly installed by mac.

Your machine has a SATA 2 interface and I'm sure the new drives are SATA 3. They should still step down and work though. It's possible your SATA cable is marginal and the newer drive is trying to demand more out of it than the old one did. A good test would be to put the new drive in an external enclosure and see if it works ok from there. If so, it's probably the cable.

I would NEVER buy from OWC merely for the reasons that their prices are miserable.
