[solved] acroread: gtk-warnings

Hi,
I've changed from i686 to x86-64.
Everything works fine (for what I've seen since yesterday )except acroread.
I receive a lot of gtk-warnings. It seems that acroread can't manage the 64 bit libraries
(acroread:478): Gtk-WARNING **: /usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/engines/libclearlooks.so: wrong ELF class: ELFCLASS64
These warnings don't prevent acroread form starting but it looks very ugly because labels and icons are missing.
Is there a way to solve this?
Thanks
P.S.: Pacman told me I had to run nspluginwrapper. I obeyed this order but what exactly did this?
Last edited by Barghest (2009-02-19 16:45:22)

Sorry, I misunderstood your question!
All I can tell you is that nspluginwrapper will allow a 32-bit plugin to work in a 64-bit firefox.  After running nspluginwrapper, your ~/.mozilla/plugins directory will contain a file named something like nppdf.so.  I don't know if that file is a 32-to-64 bit conversion wrapper for the original nppdf.so, or what (I don't know the magic behind it).  Someone with more knowledge really should answer here
PS: Do you have [testing] enabled?  bin32-acroread was giving me some libX11 errors (concerning libxcb) when I tried it last week.  I don't have the error logs anymore, so I can't be more precise.  I think maybe a newer package in testing is breaking acroread, but I haven't really looked into it.

  • [solved] acroread suddenly fails silently

    I think I must be missing something obvious but I can't think what and searching the wiki and forums hasn't helped. (Probably I'm searching for the wrong things.)
    acroread was working fine a couple of days ago. I am using the AUR PKGBUILD file, updated for 9.4.7 according to the instructions in the AUR comments. (9.4.7 is a security update but the package hasn't been updated in a long time.)
    The most recent things I've done which might have affected things involve font configuration. I've been working my way through the font config wiki. In particular, I've replaced the default freetype2, fontconfig, libxft with infinality/lcd versions. I've done the same for the lib32- versions of these packages, where applicable.
    I have tried rebuilding and reinstalling acroread and the system-wide installation of acroread fonts (just in case). I've also updated the font cache list and the fonts.dir and fonts.scale files.
    I first noticed that acroread wasn't working in firefox. Usually, the kpartsplugin opens pdf in acroread in the browser. Now I just get an empty space. (Not a blank page but the grey background behind the page which you don't usually see, I think.) But no sign of acroread. I then tried opening some pdf files on disk from the cli with acroread. I get a general error about not being able to find oxygen-gtk:
    (acroread:14245): Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "oxygen-gtk",
    However, I always get this and acroread works fine. (I've tried to solve this following hints found on the forums by installing lib32-libxslt and lib32-xcb-util but this didn't make any difference.) oxygen-gtk2 is installed just fine.
    Apart from this, the OS switches to the appropriate virtual desktop as though acroread was starting but acroread never starts. I don't get an error message. I just get left at the empty desktop.
    No errors are logged in ~/.xsession-errors and I can't find anything in the system log files either (errors.log, everything.log, dmesg, Xorg.0.log etc.).
    I tried acroread -info so I could check paths etc. but this also fails silently.
    What have I missed? Or how can I obtain more useful error messages from acroread? (i.e. any error messages at all!)
    In the meantime, I've also been unable to find out how kpartsplugin decides which applications to use. I wondered if I might persuade it to use okular (the system default for pdfs) instead...

    Thanks for the quick reply. Do you mean installing the older versions of the packages?
    lib32-freetype2-2.4.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    lib32-gtk2-2.24.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    freetype2-2.4.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    gtk2-2.24.8-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    I'm the person who asked if that kludge was compatible with having the standard versions installed on the system. No, I haven't tried that.
    I think this is a different issue because acroread isn't even starting. I get the crashes usually but not before it even starts.
    I'll definitely try this, though, if somebody can tell me what (if anything) I'd need to uninstall to use this...
    OK. So this does seem to have worked. Thanks very much for suggesting it. I just hadn't made the connection with the sporadic crashes or remembered that suggestion.
    What I did was find these files:
    lib32-freetype2-2.4.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    lib32-gtk2-2.24.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    freetype2-2.4.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    gtk2-2.24.8-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz
    (I used 2.24.8-1 for all of them - don't know if that is bad?) and the corresponding signatures. Downloaded them, checked the signatures and unpacked them. I then ran the post install instructions for the gtk packages. This didn't work for lib32 and I don't think it was necessary for either of them. I copied the corresponding file from the system for lib32 just in case.
    I stuck all this in a directory under my home directory. I then adjusted the KDE launcher with an appropriately modified form of the command from the comments, thus creating ~/.local/share/applications/acroread.desktop. (I tried doing this manually but couldn't get KDE to use it.) I then created a sh function along similar lines which will get sourced in all my sh/bash shells. Won't get propagated to tcsh without intervention but I hardly ever use tcsh anyhow....
    So I hope most stuff should use the kludge automatically.
    Sure would be nice to see this package getting a little attention from somebody who knows what they're doing!
    Thanks very much. Unfortunately I rely heavily on acroread as I can't find a replacement so fixing acroread tends to have a depressingly high priority when it (frequently) breaks.
    I don't understand what made it so much worse. Presumably infinality versions of freetype are even less to its liking than the current official versions!

    Now, if I search for it via the archlinux website, I can see that sfml exists in the repository, and so does vbam-gtk, as in the link above. Now, I could just download them both from there and be done with it, but then I wouldn't learn anything, so I'm here to ask, if these packages exist in the community repository, which I have enabled and have pulled from previously, why can't pacman find these packages? I know it isn't a network issue, or at least not an obvious one. I did
    sudo pacman -S xorg-xkill
    to test that theory but it processed faultlessly.

    Ah, thank you! I hadn't noticed that pacman wasn't automatically updating itself each time I ran it. I'm just coming over from debian-based systems for the first time, you see. Problem solved.

  • [SOLVED] No GTK themes on KDE

    Good morning.
    I'm having a rather odd problem, one which I have yet to encounter.
    I use KDE as a desktop, and when I start a GTK program using KDE tools (such as a launcher, or KDE's run command prompt) the program starts without being themed.
    When I start the programs from a terminal, they are themed properly.
    Has anyone a clue as to what's wrong with my setup?
    Thank you.

    Oh, sorry.
    It was a bad environment variable - gtk-qt-engine generated a file in my ~/.kde/env directory which manipulated an environment variable. Deleting this file solved this issue.

  • [SOLVED] Borderless GTK 3 windows MATE + compiz

    Hello, I have an issue with some application: they have no window borders.
    Not all of them, but for example zenity has no borders, and cairo-dock pop-up dialogs are all white and make it crash (I suspect it's the same problem behind)

  • [SOLVED] Java GTK look and feel

    I opened a thread recently about replacing the ugly swing buttons in Java applications. After successfully modifying my ~/.bashrc, all was well. However, these new changes were only present when run from a terminal. I assumed it was because my desktop was still running a bash session that hadn't loaded the new options yet, so I restarted.
    Symptom: Java apps launched from the GUI still have old swing buttons, but have the GTK look and feel when launched from a terminal.
    My .bashrc additions:
    # Java stuff
    export _JAVA_OPTIONS="-Dawt.useSystemAAFontSettings=on -Dswing.aatext=true -Dswing.defaultlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel -Dswing.crossplatformlaf=com.sun.java.swing.plaf.gtk.GTKLookAndFeel"
    I use SLiM for a graphical login experience. Could this be affecting it? I'm not sure what happens differently behind the scenes when using a login manager other than that CTRL+ALT+F7 brings me to my GUI when I use one (because all 6 TTYs are still TTYs).

    I had a similar issue where .xinitrc wasn't working to set an environment variable. I put mine in ~/.config/openbox/environment and it worked. If you run openbox try that. If using a different window manager maybe try /etc/environment I am unsure of how slim functions though maybe there are config files for it. I think slim is on it's way out though (already lacks some compatibility with systemd; they may fix it though upstream I have no idea). But yeah try the environment file way and see if that does it (assuming you have tested your command from the shell and it works how you want).

  • [solved] Gnome/GTK icons missing

    Hey,
    yet another icon missing topic, but I didn't find anything similar to my problem in this forum.
    http://img707.imageshack.us/img707/3432 … gicon1.png
    http://img695.imageshack.us/img695/4341 … gicon2.png
    http://img193.imageshack.us/img193/7168 … gicon3.png
    As you can see, icons are missing not only in the gnome menu, but also
    in firefox (gtk app). Therefore, I think the problem is more related to GTK?!
    Yes, I tried serveral icon themes and engines, no success.
    1. Anyone out there who got the same problem?
    Because laptop and desktop have the same issue.
    2. Any further information about this issue?
    3. Any suggestions/advices?
    Thanks in advance,
    Max

    thanks! that is what i needed, why is that off to begin with?

  • [Solved] Some GTK themes seem to only partially theme (black boxes)

    An example is Aurora, but I'd say 50% of what I have is giving me the same problem.
    There are no error messages, but the gnome-menu and panels have black rectangles where you'd expect different shades of color/gradients.
    Has aurora meant to have a black gnome-menu, or is something broken? Why do some themes work and others don't? Why are there no error messages?
    As far as I know I've installed all of the gtk themes. Are there any configuration options I can play with?
    Edit:
    lol, I fixed it seconds after posting this!
    I was missing: http://www.archlinux.org/packages/extra … es-extras/

    Some applications simply don't use the "usual" graphical toolkits, but their own. Chromium, LibreOffice, Firefox and Thunderbird are classical examples of this. While Firefox's and LibreOffice's integration with GTK is nowadays more than decent, you'll have to install [or create yourself] a specific theme for Chromium. I can't tell about Thunderbird as I don't use it.
    In Chromium, if you choose "Preferences → personal preferences → use GTK theme", you might get a good result either way, so try it if you still haven't.

  • [SOLVED] Firefox/GTK - How to disable the icons on buttons?

    I'm running GNOME 2.30 with Firefox 3.6.3.
    I have set: gtk-button-images = 0 in .gtkrc-2.0 (although I think it might be deprecated), as well as setting buttons_have_icons to false in gconf under /apps/desktop/gnome/interface.
    All other programs have icon-free buttons, but Firefox insists:
    [img]redacted[/img]
    Is there something I'm missing?

    I'm not so sure ... I've tried all of the ~25 GTK themes I have installed, and they all still have icons, but only in Firefox.  All (most?) other GTK apps I've tried removed the button icons.
    I'm in Xfce now, and the situation is the same.  Look at the "Close" buttons in both sceens:
    Icons on buttons ENABLED:
    Icons on buttons DISABLED:
    So maybe this is a Firefox issue?

  • [SOLVED] Acroread Modified All PDF File Icons To Its Icon

    Hey guys,
    I made the mistake of installing acroread and now that I've uninstalled it (yes, this happened after uninstalling acroread), it changed all the *.pdf file icons to its own icon.
    I'm not sure how to revert it back to how it was before (eg. ebooks have the front cover as the icon, white-ish for normal pdfs). Does anybody know how to fix this?
    I've also tried right clicking > open with other application in order to set the default application but the acrobat icon stays.

    Hi ConnorBehan, thanks for the help but I figured out what was wrong. Somehow the poppler-glib package got uninstalled so Thunar wasn't able to display thumbnails for PDF. Reinstalling poppler-glib back fixed the issue.
    And yes, just for future reference, the adobe icon is indeed part of the faenza icon theme.

  • [Solved] standalone Gtk dialog: how to keep it above other windows?

    i'm building a zenity-like program ( http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71453 )
    For some reason my WM (wmii) always treats it as a "full window" unlike zenity which is a small popup.
    I want to have it behave like zenity.  I studied the zenity source code but they use Glade which makes it hard to grasp.
    i also made a test program to try out a variety of options, but all my attempts failed.
    The attempts that need the root window failed because I couldn't figure out the correct way to get the root window. (apparently GDK_ROOT_PARENT(); does not work. I get glib assertion errors)
    #include <gtk/gtk.h>
    int main( int argc, char *argv[])
    GtkWidget *window;
    gtk_init(&argc, &argv);
    GtkWidget * root = (GtkWidget *) GDK_ROOT_PARENT();
    /* this is supposed to call gtk_window_set_type_hint() automatically
    GtkWidget *dialog = gtk_dialog_new_with_buttons ("My dialog",
    (GtkWindow *) root,
    GTK_DIALOG_MODAL,
    "title");
    window = gtk_dialog_new();
    gtk_window_set_transient_for ((GtkWindow *)window, (GtkWindow *)root);
    gtk_window_set_keep_above ( (GtkWindow *) window, TRUE);
    //gtk_window_set_type_hint (GTK_WINDOW (window), GDK_WINDOW_TYPE_HINT_DIALOG);
    //gtk_window_set_title(GTK_WINDOW(window), "Center");
    // gtk_window_set_default_size(GTK_WINDOW(window), 230, 150);
    // gtk_window_set_position(GTK_WINDOW(window), GTK_WIN_POS_CENTER);
    gtk_widget_show(window);
    g_signal_connect_swapped(G_OBJECT(window), "destroy",
    G_CALLBACK(gtk_main_quit), NULL);
    gtk_main();

    a more complete example, also demonstrates how you can add your own stuff to the dialog

    int main(int argc, char **argv)
    GtkWidget *dialog, *content, *label, *box, *image;

    dialog = gtk_dialog_new();
    gtk_window_set_title(GTK_WINDOW(dialog), "Center");
    gtk_window_set_default_size(GTK_WINDOW(dialog), 230, 150);
    gtk_window_set_position(GTK_WINDOW(dialog), GTK_WIN_POS_CENTER);
    gtk_window_set_keep_above(GTK_WINDOW(dialog), TRUE);
    gtk_window_set_skip_pager_hint(GTK_WINDOW(dialog), TRUE);
    gtk_window_set_skip_taskbar_hint(GTK_WINDOW(dialog), TRUE);
    gtk_dialog_add_button(GTK_DIALOG(dialog), "title", GTK_RESPONSE_ACCEPT);
    gtk_dialog_add_button(GTK_DIALOG(dialog), "(11) Ok", 11);

    image = gtk_image_new_from_stock(GTK_STOCK_DIALOG_INFO, GTK_ICON_SIZE_DIALOG);
    gtk_container_add(GTK_CONTAINER(box), image);
    gtk_container_add(GTK_CONTAINER(box), label);
    gtk_container_add(GTK_CONTAINER(content), box);
    /* emitted when the window is closed */
    g_signal_connect(G_OBJECT(dialog), "delete-event", G_CALLBACK(gtk_main_quit), NULL);

    gtk_widget_show_all(dialog);
    gtk_main();
    return 0;
    void on_response (GtkDialog *dialog, gint response, gpointer data)
