[SOLVED] Best drivers for an Nvidia 8600GTS?

Hi all. I installed Arch for the first time over the weekend. Everything went smoothly until it came time to start X - could never get it to work. I tried lots of different remedies (installing nvidia drivers from the repositories, installing the driver supplied by Nvidia themselves, blacklisting Nouveau, etc.). Nothing worked, and I think now the best thing is to start over clean and try to find where I went wrong (as there's a good chance I've done more harm than good in the process).
So as I nuke and reinstall, I'm wondering which driver will be best for my c. 2006 Nvidia 8600GTS card. Should I install the arch nvidia drivers with
pacman -Syu nvidia nvidia-utils nvidia-libgl libvdpau
or should I use the driver supplied by Nvidia? And if I go with the Nvidia-supplied driver, do I leave nvidia-utils, nvidia-libgl and/or libvdpau, or does it replace those, too?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

First of all, please, read through the related Wiki pages.
The arch nvidia drivers (packages: nvidia, nvidia-utils, etc) are the ones supplied by nvidia, maintained and packaged by the arch maintainers and packagers.
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NVIDIA
The open source driver is called nouveau.

what are the best drivers for my vid card?  live update still is only giving me 31.00 but i've seen others on msi site.

Go directly to nVidia's site if you want the latest WHQL'd version.
Guru3d has a nice archive too.
Personally I would just use nvidia's drivers with the coolbit's registry hack to open the clock settings. Also found at Guru3D site....it's all over all you have to do is do a search like Google.

Best Drivers for MSI 6600GT in SLI mode

When i first tried that both cards were healthy and operated fine in non-SLI mode. Tried again 1-2 days later and one card gave coloured blocks all over the screen.
Yup, one card was in the process of croaking so giving random effects. Now thoroughly dead and on the way back for exchange.
    Thanks for looking and answering.

  • "best" drivers for TV@nywhere master

For a month or two now, I am wondering why did I help my girlfriend
and gave her my ASUS TV/FM pro based on Philips 7134 chip and took from
her MSI TV@nywhere Master based on Conexant 23881 chip.
I have read somwehere a few months ago that it has one bit better compression
or decompression and thought that it is something that I will benefit from.
From what I have learnt using the two different cards main problem is in the drivers.
I got the best results with asus card using the original Philips drivers and not the one from Asus site and now... after a month of searching I think I have found the best drivers for conexant chip.
    http://ftp://ftp.packardbell.com/pub/itemnr/6924330100/cx88x_20331.exe
they are originaly written for the Leadtek card but...
I just installed them over the beta drivers that STU has recommeded and the picture is GREAT!
    better than it was.
do not try them... DO NOT WORK! Stu is right again!
these drivers do not work with the silicon tuner that is on the MSI card!!!
Sorry for 'causing problems to you all!
BUT I HOPE THIS CARD can do much better.

    no they don't work
the installer just copies the driver files to the C:\PnP\Other directory, but the TV Tuner will not use them (driver author is still MicroStar I'tl and the date is as on the beta)
i tried to manually install the drivers, and that didn't work either
these are dated 2001/2002 anyway, so i don't think they can be that up to date

  • Best Drivers for 6600GT

I was wondering what the best drivers were for the MSI 6600GT card?  I currently have the latest nvidia drivers, 77.81, loaded.  Each time I install new drivers I use Driver Cleaner Pro.  I'm wondering if there is a driver that my card works best with because I recall having better graphics with an older driver--but that could just be me looking back on golden days.
Also, should I use the MSI drivers on their site (if so which ones) or the nvidia ones.

I always use the drivers from nVidia. If you want the whole archive of drivers, you can go here ftp://download.nvidia.com/Windows and experiment with them all you want. It also depends on what you want, better looking vs better performance and what games you play. You are bound to get many different opinions on the best driver, but in the end it is really in the eye of the beholder. In reality, the best drivers are usually the ones that were released around the time your card hit the market. As you go to newer drivers, optimizations for the current cards on the market may result in poor results for older cards.
    There's always Omega's drivers too http://www.omegadrivers.net/

  • How to pick best drivers for KT2 Combo-L?

    Hello,
After I wrecked my old MS-6340 board I have purchased a used MSI socket A board in order to assemble with a internet capable machine for my parents with all the old parts I still had. On Ebay I have found a KT2 Combo-L for a reasonable price.
I have formatted the old hard drive and installed XP Pro (32-bit) and Office 2003 already. It is running like a charm
But how do I know how to pick to optimal drivers for this board? I am asking this question since I know from this forum that 'THE NEWEST DRIVERS ARE NOT NECESSARILY THE BEST ONES'........
I saw that this mobo supports 'Live Update'? Would that be the best way to start? Is picking the optimal drivers a question of 'trial and error' or is there someone who can give me some tips of how to proceed here?

  • Best drivers for Auidgy

Hello, I'm using an audigy 2 OEM card. I heard rumors that the Audigy 2 ZS gamer drivers were better for this card rather than the audigy 2 drivers? Is that true?
Also when I install the SB Audigy 2 driver from the disk, it says there is no sound card detected whenever I try to open the media center or volume control center from my SB Audigy 2 programs. Why is this? This is a fresh new install of windows.
Am I supposed to install the drivers before I install service pack , 2, 3 and other windows updates? I am having a really hard time just getting my sound card to work anymore because of these sound card issues and drivers and not being able to recongize my sound card. It is plugged in correctly, it is purely driver problems.
Any help is very much appreciated, i'm pulling my hair out because of this card.

The drivers for all Audigy/X-Fi cards are essentially?the same. So you just need to look at the driver version and not at the card they were supposed to make work. However keep in mind that some OEM models are not supported by Creative's driver directly, so the driver will refuse to install. In that case you may want to try to extract the files and do a "driver only" installation.
Personally I would recommend you try "Daniel_K's"? latest?modded drivers for your Audigy... Search the forum ynd you shall find them
Now concerning your programs, you do not state which OS you are using. However given that you probably have an old card and the CD is equally old, you should forget about the applications under Vista and probably XP SP3. Satisfy yourself with the "Audio Console" which comes with the drivers or any extra utilities available for download by Creative.

  • Best Drivers for new K8N Neo4 Platinum Ultra 7125-010

Looking for just a little clarification on which drivers to load for this board. It is on the way with my CPU and should be here tomorrow. In reading through some of the posts, it seems to be a good idea to load the most recent drivers right from the start and not even use the CD that comes with the MSI board. Below is a list of the Drivers which I "think" are needed.
    Graphics Video Driver; 78.01
    Nforce AMD Driver; 6.66
    Audio Driver; 4.62
In doing some further reading, it seems I may need the following also but am not sure??
    Windows XP Unified Driver; 5.10
    Which includes the following:
    Audio; 4.42
    Audio Utilities: 4.44
    Ethernet; 4.42
    Gart; 4.36
    Memory Controller; 3.38
    SMBus; 4.04
    Installer;4.46
    IDE NVIDIA; 4.46
My plan is to setup the build with 1 WD 37.6 Sata drive as the boot drive and only the drive to start with. As for my Internet connection, I am going to use my USB Gigafast Wireless to connect to my D-Link DL-524 wireless router. I am going to Disable all of the onboard LAN features. Part of my confusion at this time is, do I need all of the Windows XP Unified Driver package??? Thanks in advance for any help in clearing up my confusion. Also, is there a specific order in which these should be installed??
    Regards; Pop's

No problem Pop,besides,I'm 42 now and still love to build on my computer
As for the link, you need the "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 Version (exe) 1.2.2.2"
or the one just above it "AMD Athlon™ 64 Processor Driver for Windows XP x64 Edition and Windows Server 2003 x64 Editions Version (exe) 1.2.2.1"
It will uninstall the current driver that was installed with the mainboard driver cd,and should install the newer afterwards, you can check in hardware device manager if the driver version is the newer for cpu after reboot.
Haha, yes,I had the same feelings before I build this system, reading all msi forums regarding mainboards.
And all I read was problems after problems. But I have another system based on the KT3ultra,which I build 3 years ago,and I'm still pleased with this system so I decided to stay with MSI for now. Also I noticed the problems were/are the same on the Asus platform, seems common on nforce4 mainboards.
As for building, just take your time,I had a slight incident with placing the heatsink+fan on the cpu socket, apparently in the corners of the cpu bracket is a small ledge(Énglish is not my nature language so don't know if I use the correct word) ,I couldn't get the retention lever in place, needed a lot of pressure and I became scared of damaging things.
So I waited a few seconds and tried again, suddenly with a loud click, the retention lever fell in place, the heatsink was hindered by this ledge in one of the corners from the bracket. So you have to place the heatsink correct and don't overuse the pressure you need for the retention lever.Slowly increase it,and all will go well.
Also I noticed the pcie graphics card fell right over the retention clip that holds it in place right besides the northbridge fan(well, actually on the left side from the fan),so installed once,it's very hard to get your finger behind to replace the card for example,or to clean it out from dust. But I used a small tool to get behind and press the clip for card removal(a bended metal tool,so I need to be carefull using this)
As for sata drives,I started with an ide to be on the safe side, but I do know you need the driver floppy disks for using the sata drive.
Can't help you any further with that for now, when I buy sata2 drives no doubt I also will need to check if I need a bios update etc.But that's with a smooth system already running,so I can take my time and redo any steps I made if things fail.
That's why you need to do the correct order of installing software,it's much easier then to fix problems that may arise.
Well, goodluck and don't be afraid, just take your time.

  • Best Drivers for FX 5700 TD128

    Hi All,
Can anybody tell me which drivers work best with the fx5700 TD128?
I've used the origanal MSI drivers that came with my card, but that's the older 52.14 Driver, the 52.14 wont even bechmark properly in 3DMark 2003 (Bugs in the driver?) I tried using the official 53.03 driver but the card benchmarks lower.
On the MSI Website they still have the 52.14 driver listed for my card.
No Updates? Which Driver will have all the bug fixes and performance improvement?

I would suggest a clean un-installation of the previous drivers, restart system and do a fresh clean installation of the VGA drivers again.

  • Different drivers for different Nvidia GPUs in the same system

I have the following two video cards installed in my Arch Linux system:
    $ lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation G84 [Quadro FX 1700] (rev a1)
    02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF100 [Tesla C2050 / C2070] (rev a3)
I am interested in using the Quadro FX 1700 for the display with the open
source Nouveau driver.  I want to use the Tesla C2070 card for CUDA development
    using the NVIDIA driver.
Currently, I am using the nvidia and nvidia-utils packages for both the
display and CUDA.  However, I get better display stability when I am using
Nouveau.  If I install the package xf86-video-nouveau and comment out the
blacklist in /usr/lib/modprobe.d/nvidia.conf, then nouveau appears to take
over both cards.  In this state nvidia-smi returns the following:
    $ nvidia-smi
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (No such file or directory).
NVIDIA-SMI has failed because it couldn't communicate with NVIDIA driver. Make sure that latest NVIDIA driver is installed and running.
Is it possible to "attach" Nouveau only to the Quadro and let the Nvidia driver
    pick up the Tesla?

    Hi,
If you are talking about host...then when you will start installation of new system it ask for SID then choose different SID...

  • [SOLVED] Best language for coding games

    Hi All,
My son has been learning BASIC-256 and he's interested in writing games. Can someone recommend a programming language useful for that purpose. Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful replies. It looks like many are in agreement that python might be a good step up from BASIC-256. I did some reading but I would appreciate some clarification on which version to use, python, python2 or python3 (I really don't understand how significant the differences are). As companions to python many things have been mentioned: blender, allegro, SDL, PyGame, Löve, SFML, Python-Ogre and PyGTK. Any thoughts on which of these might be the easiest to deal with, (or none)?
Daedalus1 wrote:For a beginner writing 2d games, python2 would probably be the best choice.
You could also use PyGTK to make games since all you really need for a 2d game is a way to draw graphics.Python is a good "gateway language" to more advanced languages, and it's useful for scripting so it has it's uses even if he moves on to the next tier.
    That sounds pretty good.
bananaoomarang wrote:Certainly Python with Pygame would be good for starting out right now, Love looks awesome to, though I find Python easier to read than Lisp, just a personal opinion.
Thirty five years ago when I was at university studying music composition, one of my music teachers was also teaching a class on Lisp (lots of irritating silly parentheses) I took the class and for the good of all I decided to stick with music. Actually, I've been enjoying learning BASIC-256 with my son, maybe, after all these years I should take another look at Lisp.

In the former, there's more focus on creating a fun game, creating the graphics, and doing everything as simply and easy as possible with the single goal of having a finished video game. In the latter (the one I enjoy), I don't care that in the past 12 years I've never finished making a video game. I enjoy tinkering with fairly low level graphics engines, implementing simple physics, and seeing the game come together one small piece at a time. I enjoy the programming.
Very good point, I've noticed that even though my son constantly thinks (and talks) about the details of his game creation, he seems to also enjoy just playing with BASIC-256. I also can relate to this as a composer, thinking and conceptualizing about the organization of sound has brought me as much pleasure as finishing a composition. Process rather than goal orientation.

  • IMac 3.06ghz with Vista 64bit :: Need drivers for GPU nVidia 8800 GS

    Hey everybody,
I succesfully installed Vista 64bit on my newest iMac with Boot Camp, but the only thing missing right now is the driver for the GPU, Nvidia 8800 GS 512MB RAM. Any idea if I can install a fitting driver? I already tried the auto-detect driver from Nvidia's website and I manually selected the latest driver there, but none works.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so far!
    Mx

    Hi Mx,
use the driver and modification found here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/
Since the iMacs don't use the Desktop versions but rather the Mobility versions of GPUs, the generic NVIDIA driver won't install because of the missing entry in the .inf file.

  • [SOLVED] Best Practice for systemd, udisks, udev, polkit, and openbox

I have to admit I am stymied here.  I have been in the wiki and forums most of the day and am just not finding the solution here.
I have both udisks and udisks2 installed
I am running a pure systemd
I do not use a login manager
I use startx that has a switch clause based on an environmental variable to pick the environment I want.
For now, let's limit this to xfce4 and openbox.
I used to be able to log in and mount usb and SD volumes using Thunar, Dolphin, and palimpsest.  I can no longer do that; I receive an error indicating I've not the proper privileges.
Even more fun, I log into a console and use udiskie, and can mount volumes without issue.
I start X with startx, launch a terminal program, and udiskie will no longer allow me to mount.  I can read volumes mounted by udiskie before I started X.
I have tried various combinations of ck-launch-session, dbus-launch in concert with openbox-session and startxfce4.  Nothing allows me to automount as a normal user.  This used to work, but something has gone south, but I am not clear when.
Anyone have suggestions for a stable solution here?

Are you starting X onto the same vt you logged into i.e. startx -- vt1 for tty1 or startx -- vt$(fgconsole) (or falconindy's xserverrc) for a more general case?   If you don't, systemd-logind cannot keep track of the session and the -kit permissions will thus break.
You can see sessions using loginctl:
