[SOLVED] Blinking screen - new Xorg and Intel issue

Screen is blinking after opening laptop lid no matter what i did (nothing, lock screen, hibernate, standby). It blinks every 10-20 seconds for about 1-2 seconds, and cpu% used by X's raises from 0.3-1.0 to even 10% and system slows down a little in that moment. My Xorg logs:

Blinking stops when i restart computer.
I have newest xorg and intel drivers (xorg-server 1.7.1.901-2 & xf86-video-intel 2.9.1-1). I tried also downgrade this (and related) packages to older versions (even xorg-server 1.5.* & xf86-video-intel 2.4.*) and the same happens... with only one difference. On that oldest packages I've tried screen doesn't blinks, but the wallpaper of the desktop is changing: my -> default -> my -> default... with the same frequency . I was googling a lot, believe me. I study IT on a University and I asked my friends from there, and they just run out of ideas. In addition i can write that it isn't my laptop fault because windows xp works fine and ubuntu 9.04 (i had before archlinux) also worked good. It has started on ubuntu 9.10, so I thought I move to archlinux, and its still here? I suppose its a problem with intel drivers or xorg, but somehow linked with power management of the monitor(?). But why then older packages don't work? Please, I will be grateful for any help.

  • [Solved]Dell XPS13 ultrabook Xorg and Wifi issues after Kernel upgrade

I installed Arch on a Dell XPS 13 Ultrabook today, and most everything ran fine after I ran the initial upgrade -- but I held back on the kernel update from 3.1.3 to 3.3.7.
I just now updated the kernel, and now I can't start X, nor can I access the wireless card. For X, I get a "Fatal server error: no screens found" error, and I can no longer find wlan0 with iwconfig, although I can still see it with lspci.
I even tried downgrading the kernel to 3.1.9, but I'm still having identical issues.
What can I do to fix this, short of starting again from scratch?

Edit: Solved by copying all the files in the boot folder on my root partition (sda3) to my real boot partition (sda1).

  • Macbook screen cracked, HD and performance issues

I am definitely disappointed with my computer.
I have a Macbook 13.3" 2.4Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo 4Gb 160Gb HD, Serial#: W8**VM0P5, and within 1,5 year I have faced many issues, which are related here:
    September 24th, 2008
    O.S. CRASHES
I bought it in late September 2008, in Cologne, Germany, at the reseller "Compustore PC Gmbh", and also asked 4Gb Ram, and a Wireless mighty mouse.
After changing the Ram memory, i went home; and a few days later, the problems came. Sometimes, the system crashed suddenly, showing the grey screen: "You must restart your computer". I thought it was normal, and continued to use, when it became more frequently (Picture: http://picasaweb.google.com/gstorck/MacbookProblems#5476986272817173138). It was little strange for a new laptop, and then I took it back to the store to fix it. The seller just took a look, changed some configurations, and gave me back again. I did this twice, and had to get back to the store for the third time, due to new crashes and some lack of performance. Then the seller replaced the Ram memory, with new 4Gb.
After that, the system worked more stable; the problem happened some two or three times after some months, but it was ok.

    HD Problems
One year later, in late 2009, I purchased a Mac OS update, the Snow Leopard. I was back to Brazil, where I live till today. During the OS installation, something went wrong and it couldn't be completed. Mac asked me to restart the computer, but then the system didn't start anymore; some files were corrupted. I guess there was not enough space to install the update, so it was not completed; but it should be no reason to the corruption of the OS.
    November 10th, 2009
I took my computer to the local Apple technical support, the "Omni Informatica", in Curitiba, PR, Brazil, to format the HD and reinstall the Snow Leopard. As I needed more space, I also changed my original 160Gb HD for a new 250Gb Western Digital HD. The service was finished in Nov 17th.
I noticed also little cracks in the laptop case, but I had no time to insist with the bad local technical support to repair it (I know Apple already acknowledged this problem.) They said, at first, that they would have to ask the Apple USA to send the body, or something like that.

    SCREEN CRACKED
The reinstallation was ok, and the laptop was running well. Suddenly, when I take the Macbook from the case and open it on my desk, something pretty wrong appears: a large crack on the lower right corner of the screen.
It was not dropped, it was not crashed, and I did not "close it with a pen inside".
The screen simply cracked. And as so many similar problems with another users I could easily find on the web, I really expect Apple to admit it as a Manufacture's fault. The local technical support said it is no other thing except I hit the laptop, or dropped it, so it's all my fault. (See Picture 3)
The only thing they can offer me is to repair the screen for R$1200. I am definitely not going to pay for this; a "normal" and good pc laptop costs this price (And a new basic macbook costs today R$2400).
If the problems were just it, it would be not so bad.

    HD FAILURE
After 1 month, on Feb 11th, my new 250Gb HD simply stopped working. Different from the first time, that the HD was just corrupted, this time it has really broken, it died. I had it all backed up, but I have lost the HD.
Back again to the technical assistance, they said to me the problem was the same that cracked my screen: my fault, on letting the laptop fall, or hitting it with some kind of pressure. They couldn't do anything, and even the Western Digital 3-month Warranty would not cover this type of problem ("user's misuse").

    DECREASE IN PERFORMANCE
I'm working again with the original 160Gb HD (formatted and reinstalled), and some other external drives to store my files.
It's been quite difficult to deal with all this Data and Screen problems, and now the Macbook's performance is decreasing every day. It's been slower to process operations and to launch the applications. Sometimes, the system does not even sleep anymore when the laptop is closed, or it takes so long time to sleep that it just sleeps when I open it again. Besides, sometimes the mouse pointer disappear, and some bizarre graphics take its place.
Don't forget: It's a 1,5-year-old Macbook, with 2.4GHz, 4Gb RAM and the O.S. is installed for no longer than 4 months. It is supposed to work better, I guess.
I saved a lot of money to buy a good computer, and to get rid of the endless issues I had with PCs. That issues never were so serious with the ones I face now with Macbook.
Even if I pay R$1200 to replace the screen, with the money I don't have, I would still stand these performance issues, which seem to have come with this problematical laptop. I hope to have some solution from Apple, if it want to deliver what it promises and want to keep a customer.
Otherwise, I will have to change to another system platform and another computer manufacturer, to see if I stop throwing money away with these devices. I think that maybe at least, the cost-benefit ratio will be higher.
Did anybody receive contact from Apple support about these screen problems?

Well, your first issue is pretty clearly just some bad RAM, and it sounds like even the replacement RAM was bad. Who knows if the people who put it in had any kind of clue what they were doing. I've seen repair shops where people are smoking in the same room they do repairs.
Second problem sounds typical of a failing HDD. It's a fairly common problem with laptops... Apple, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Acer... Probably the single most common problem with laptops no matter who makes them. People get this notion in their heads that the "portable" aspect of laptops means you can pick them up and carry them all over while turned on. Which you can... If you don't mind dramatically shortening the life of the HDD. What "portable" REALLY means with laptops, is that they are easy to move if you put them into a powered down state. They should NEVER be moved around when in normal operation. And since you seem to do a bit of traveling, if you're on a plan, and there's turbulence, you should shut the laptop off until it smooths out.
The screen cracking could have something to do with the rather sudden change in climate. Germany isn't exactly the frozen tundra, but it is a pretty different climate from Brazil, and changes in things like humidity could cause problems. The laws of thermodynamics tell us that things expand as they heat up, so if there's already a crack somewhere, it could easily get worse as a result of increased heat.
And since your initial hard drive was already starting to fail, it hasn't magically stopped failing since being removed from the system, so obviously performance is going to get worse.
At this point, it's pretty much impossible to tell where the damage was done, so you're probably just out of luck. The people in Germany could have screwed something up, or the people in Brazil, it could have been environmental damage, and it's possible the defect was always there, it just didn't manifest until recently. There's just no way to tell for sure. So Apple is unlikely to do anything for you.

  • White Screen- New Hard Drive Same issue

I had a white screen. The MacBook Pro would do nothing. The only way I could get it to work was by pressing option when powering on but even then I tried everything reinstalling Lion. When I tried to reinstall lion it would pop up with an error message. It would not even let me choose a location. I ordered a new harddrive and I am still having the same issue. White Screen when I turn the computer on unless I press the option and power button and Still an error message when I try to reinstall lion. ANY HELP WOULD BE AWESOME!!! THANK YOU!!

If you want to preserve the data on the boot drive, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to fully boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    1. Boot from the Recovery partition or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    2. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    3. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.

  • [solved]black screen with xorg 1.6 after resume (intel)

after upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 no matter if i use s2ram or s2disk, first resume works fine, the second suspend and resume results in a black screen without any chance to swich to any tty.
i have read about bug like this which was resolved with using intel legacy driver. however my problem still occures.

    took a look into everything.log.
    that line looks pretty suspicious:
kernel: [drm:i915_get_vblank_counter] *ERROR* trying to get vblank count for disabled pipe 0
it occures around the time i did the last resume.
here is a relevant snippet from everything.log:

  • Xorg and framebuffer issues with high resolutions

So I got a nice shiny new 23" 1080p Asus VH236H monitor. Unfortunately, it's not turning out to be as great I was hoping, possibly due to the Geforce FX5200 bios, but I'm not sure. I think these issues are probably related, so I put them in the same thread.
First, the console: vesafb, uvesafb, and nvidiafb all fail at delivering a useable framebuffer greater than 1280x1024. vesafb flat out denies anything beyond 795 (0x31B). uvesafb and nvidiafb will fall back on 1280x1024@75Hz, which causes text to flash all over the screen and requires a reboot to remedy. It doesn't matter if I feed fbset the exact timings X uses, they'll still fallback on 1280x1024. `hwinfo --vbe` has this to say about hardware support:

Supposedly, the framebuffer should be able to support 1400x1050, but I can't get it, possibly because it's not listed as monitor supported. Does this mean that I'm stuck with a 1280x1024 max res?
This brings me to my next problem... Xorg. On my old monitor, I liked the nvidiafb-fbdev driver combination because I could quickly switch between X and console, and so long as I had the proprietary nvidia gl libraries installed, X ran smoothly. (never got the nv driver fbdev option to function with stability) Obviously, this is impossible now. I can't get nv to run at a resolution greater than 1280x1024. With the proprietary drivers, max resolution is 1440x900; however, if I disable max pixel clock checking, support for 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 is added.
Now, this is where things get serious. If I switch back to console after starting X with NoMaxPClkCheck, I get an out of range message from my monitor. I can freely restart/switch back to X and everything is fine there, but the console is unuseable until reboot.

    Brett,
When working with the file that has many vector points. Try working in Outline mode if you can and if it works for you. Keep in mind with all the complex vectors the screen has to redraw which is taking up application memory when you move or update the object/drawing. If you can try resize the graphic to a smaller size to work with it then enlarge it back to normal size when you are ready for the final version of the file.
    It may help.
    Thanks
    Scott

  • [Solved] Black Screen after Xorg configure.

    Hello all Archlinux users;)
Yesterday i reinstall my system (Archlinux x86_64).
Install was succesful (it's always succesful).
Problems started after install ,I istalled Xorg a Nvidia Drivers (GF 8600GT).
I got conflicts nvidia-utils with xorg.utils 7-4-1 and it's remowe something gl libary.
And ,i like always install hwd.
I configure xorg with hwd -xa.
    I start X with (X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf)
And after that i started that i got black screen (Monitor have signal).
I try nvidia drivers too ,but it's like with the Vesa (Black Screen).
    And my questions is:
What Should i do to run Xorg?
I run before Arch with similiar config and it's works.
I can't get here X.org log or xorg.conf but they don't have any erorrs (in log i have something about hal and dievice , but on wiki i read that xorg 1.6 blocked hotplug dievices).
    Sorry for my English:|
    Thanks for help.
I found similiar problem in this topic:
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=71158 .

    Hello Again
    I started X.
And my tip for all Arch user is to install only xorg not xserver-xorg xorg-utils just xorg to have .xinit/startx script.
But it's not over I started X but the mause and keyboard are not responding (they are dead).
Before when i got this I just try hwd -xa and this solved my problem.
Now i use xorg.conf generated by hwd -xa and it's happening (mouse and keyboard are not responding).
    I got "AllowMouseOpenFail" "true"
    "AutoAddDivices" "False"
In Server Flags but this doesn't solved my problem.
    Please help

  • New keyboard and intel iMac not working at startup with Leopard. Help?

    Hi,
I'm using an Intel Core Duo 20" iMac and Apples' new keyboard. With Tiger, at first the keyboard wasn't recognized by the system during startup. After installing keyboard software update 1.2 everything worked fine.
Now I've installed Leopard and I'm back to where I was: the keyboard again isn't recognized at startup, so I'm forced to use the remote during startup to change to the windows partition , and I'm not able to reset PRAM settings.
    Anyone with a solution?
    Thanks

Start-up commands are NOT recognized on Core Duos - YET...
there is an expected firmware update in the near future
for all start-up commands - use the old keyboard
ALSO - holding down the menu button on your remote during start-up allows you to select a start-up drive while moving with the control function
    +found that by accident...+
    Thanks,

  • P67A-GD65 New Bios and RAID issues

    Hello all,
Last week I decided to reinstall my whole OS from scratch. Before doing so I updated the BIOS to the latest 4.3 version - I was experiencing some issues which may have been HW related and I thought I wanted to try the latest BIOS.
I now have a weird problem. When I shutdown the PC I can heard my RAID HDDs being turned off one by one, but before the last one is being shut down the PC reboots. Then the RAID BIOS screen takes ages to appear and I can hear my HDDs being turned on one by one - slowly.
If I then shutdown the system again, all is good.
The other day the RAID BIOS was showing one of the RAID HDDs being NOT part of the RAID - hence it marked the array as Degraded. The array rebuilt correctly and it's not ok.
I know that my HDDs are possibly not perfect - but if analysed they do not show any obvious issue - but I was not having this problem before.
Any suggestions? It would be also nice to know WHICH HDD failed, and maybe I could try replacing it! Is there a log somewhere that tells me what's happening?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
What RAID mode are you useing (0, 1, 10,...)?
When you go into RAID BIOS/setup, dosent it show the SATA ports for all your HDD's to see wich failed(if its "fixed" then its maybe toolate for this one)
Here is link for BETA BIOSses
After last full relise you see fix Quote
01.Add solution to fix System hang up ¡°A2¡± with some hard disk.
Maybe thats whats up rigth now..
    Hope this helped! Cheers Mummy

  • Setting up a New Site and Having Issues with Flash SWF's

Hello.  I just set up a new site definition, with a testiing server using MAMP Pro, and everything seems to be functioning properly, except that my swf's are not showing up when you publish to a browser from dreamweaver, instead you get the place holder message to upgrade to the newest version of flashplayer... besides the fact that my computers flash player is up to date.  At this point in time my two other websites swf components work just fine when I publish out of dreamweaver.
I'd also like to mention that the Live View works perfectly and is displayinig the swf's as they should be.
    Thanks!

I copied the associated scripts over to the site folder on the testing server and I'm getting the same results.  I'm sure this is something that is really simple.  Here is the code:<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">

  • New iphone and syncing issues

I just bought a new iphone for my daughter and when I plugged it into to download apps, she received all my text, contacts, pictures. How do I fix this so she has only her information.
    HELP!!!

Create a new Apple ID specifically for your daughter, and then change the ID on the phone under iCloud, iMessage, Facetime.   You can share the Apple ID for iTunes & Apps if you wish but only can do a maximum of 5 devices.

  • New 7410 and CIFS Issue

Hey team...This is my first Sun 7410 system and posting! I have been working on setting up the CIFS. I have created the project for them and started adding some CIFS. I created a CIFS called "MOU_FS$" with the mount point "/export/MOU_FS". I then created another CIFS called "mou_profiledata" with the mount point "/export/MOU_FS/mou_profiledata". It created it but I dont see it under the MOU_FS$ directory. When I deleted the mou_profiledata CIFS it then showed up, but it will not allow me to delete it from the directory side. I dont want it any more, what can I do to delete it?
    Thanks Scott L.

    Hello,
Yes, there are ways to do this. None of them very elegant. But, a list of just about every program that can do this and a brief discussion about them can be found here:
    http://macs.about.com/od/ipod/a/copyfromipod.htm
Be sure that he looks over the "See Also" and "Related Articles" listed at the bottom of that page.
I think that will put him on the right path.
    I hope this helps.
Let us know if you have other questions.

you do not need nearly as many packages on hold. Haven't logged into my 32-bit arch install for a month now, but I've maintained a xorg 1.4 install with this line just fine:
    IgnorePkg = xf86-video-intel xf86-input-evdev xorg-server xorg-apps xorg-xkb-utils xorg-server-utils xorg-utils intel-dri synaptics libgl libdrm xorg-res-utils xf86driproto xf86-input-keyboard xkeyboard-config
That said, I expext to upgrade next time I use it (probably to play around with some fast boot). I would look into troubleshooting with the latest xorg and intel driver as it really should work, if I were you. I presume you have already tried starting x without a xorg.conf as a baseline test with those versions?
