[SOLVED] Can't get PostgreSQL to start after following Wiki instruc...
I'm trying to start the postgresql service on my systemd installation. I've followed the instructions on the wiki. First I installed the package postgresql, then I uncommented the PGROOT line in the configuration file.
When I try to run systemctl start postgresql, I get the following:
# systemctl start postgresql
Job for postgresql.service failed. See 'systemctl status postgresql.service' and 'journalctl -n' for details.
# systemctl status postgresql

I tried doing what it suggested to me:
# su - postgres -c "initdb --locale en_US.UTF-8 -D '/var/lib/postgres/data'"
The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "postgres".
This user must also own the server process.
The database cluster will be initialized with locale "en_US.UTF-8".
The default database encoding has accordingly been set to "UTF8".
The default text search configuration will be set to "english".
creating directory /var/lib/postgres/data ... initdb: could not create directory "/var/lib/postgres/data": Permission denied
I also tried with the directory that was set in the configuration file, with similar results:
# su - postgres -c "initdb --locale en_US.UTF-8 -D '/var/lib/postgres'"
The files belonging to this database system will be owned by user "postgres".
This user must also own the server process.
The database cluster will be initialized with locale "en_US.UTF-8".
The default database encoding has accordingly been set to "UTF8".
The default text search configuration will be set to "english".
fixing permissions on existing directory /var/lib/postgres ... initdb: could not change permissions of directory "/var/lib/postgres": Operation not permitted
I don't know what to try next. I'm not sure what it needs me to do that it can't do itself. I've never worked with any kind of database system, I'm just installing PostgreSQL to start tinkering with it a bit for some pet projects.
Thanks for your time

Whelp, stupid me. Right after posting I managed to fix it myself. I'll post the solution and leave it here in case other people run into the same problem. The solution was to change the owner of the PGROOT directory and then running the initdb command again:
# chown -R postgres:postgres /var/lib/postgres/
# su - postgres -c "initdb --locale en_US.UTF-8 -D '/var/lib/postgres/data'"

Can't get Firefox to start after performing OS security updates
Just did the most recent updates on OS-X 10.6.8, and now I can't get Firefox to start. It comes up and says that it is having problems (the "embarassing" window) and that I should try closing tabs. However, it's not responding at all, so finally I have to resort to force quit. I've try cold starting the computer with no effect.
Let's try this. You said you are trying to start Firefox 8 on the problem machine? Can you try downloading Firefox 11 from [http://www.getfirefox.com www.getfirefox.com], install that, restart your computer, then see if it still acts up?
If it does, try running Firefox in [[Safe mode|Safe mode]]. -
Can't get OPP service started after OATM due to can't open file for reading
This is my second run on the OATM upgrade. OPP (and thus XML reports) came up fine after the 2nd run. After this run, had some issues with enqueing and solved them in an S/R with Oracle, but now I can't start OPP. I have tried all sorts of things, like aborting it in OATM, restarting, shutting down instance, running cmclean twice, resubmitting request, etc. Here is the error I get:
As System Administrator in forms, go to:
Concurrent -> Manager -> Administer
-> pick Output Post Processor (from the many manager in the list)
-> by the way it says "Activating" under status, seems stuck there.
-> then hit the Processes button
-> it will show a long list of "Terminated" and default to the first
one at the top.
-> Hit the "Manager Log" button
-> you now get
"APP-FND-01632: Cannot open file
/sechi/applcsf/log/SECHI_orav880d/FNDOPP1380237.txt for reading
Cause: [Routine] encountered an error when attempting to open file
sechi/applcsf/log/SECHI_orav880d/FNDOPP1380237.txt for reading
Action: Verify that the filename is correct, the environment variables
controlling that filename are correct, and the file exists.
Action: Verify that protections on that file permit reading by this
program
- but what is wierd is that the permissions on this dir are 777. I can see old OPP logs in that directory from before OATM. I can manually create a file with the name it complains about , then the app opens up the blank file with nothing in it. It seems that file is not getting created, not that it can't be opened.
If I need to change the log level of OPP please also tell me how to do that if it would provide some clues.
THanks MarvinOne more thing I am going to try first....
I am going to change the service ID of the OPP manager. It keeps trying
to restart the dead process maybe that it is..

We explored using sbRIO for our project, for different reasons we ended up going with a different embedded solution . We are currently evaluating the LabVIEW C Generator to convert some of the core analysis routines from LabVIEW to C so the team that will be creating the embedded solution don't have to re-implement them from scratch.
Before converting our code, I followed the instructions given in the "Getting Started with the NI LabVIEW C Generator" manual to create a static library created inCygwin using GNU Compiler Collection (GCC).
I managed to compile the code, but when I type "run GCD.exe" in the Cygwin console, I just see the window flash with no time to see if the result is correct or not. I modified the main.c cde to add a getchar(), but the window still just flashes and now I am left with the GCD process still running and have to kill it using Windows Task Manager.
Has anyone else got this example to run? I am sure I am missing an obvious setting or step, please help me.
More details below.
Thanks,
Fab
Here is a video showing the steps I followed
If you don't want/can't see the video. Here are some screenshots of what I have done so far:
GratestCommonDivisor.lvproj C Generation build specs Information:
C Function prototype definition:
I copied Makefile located at: C:\Program Files (x86)\National Instruments\LabVIEW 2011\examples\CGenerator\Tutorial\Cygwin
and replaced both Makefile and Makefile.cygwin in the directory where the C code was generated
I also copied main.c from the same location and replaced the one generated
Here is the snapshot of the results after executing "make GCD.exe"
Then to run it I just type
I see a window open and close really quickly and I never see the result. I have tried adding the getchar() line to the main.c file, but still I don't get to see the results.
Certified LabVIEW Architect * Certified Professional Instructor * LabVIEW ChampionHi Kevin,
I hope you had a good Thanksgiving. I am attaching a zip file with the LabVIEW project, my build specification and my version of "Greatest Common Divisor.vi", which should be the same as the one that you have that ships with the LabVIEW C Generator, but just in case. I am also attaching a zip file with the C files generated by the LabVIEW C Generator.
You can also see the video I posted earlier with the steps I followed. I hope you are able to point out where I went wrong.
Thanks,
Fab

Can't get CS4 to start after disk change
I've changed by boot disk on my macbook pro running osx 10.9 to an ssd.
Since then I can't start CS4 and it says licensing has stopped.
i have had this once before a few years back when I had a disk problem and had to restore from backup and I used the license recovery tool and managed to get it working. This time I have tried the tool and all the steps on the recovery doc and still doesn't work. Maybe connected with 10.9 of osx?
I have spoken to customer support and they say they don't give support for older products and suggested I go to the forums or buy the latest product version!
I have the serial number but I don't have the software cd any more. I didn't think I'd need it with backups etc.
I even looked to see if the old CS4 free trial was available but the link on the prodesigntools adobe site doesnt work either so I guess that's been removed.
Can anyone advise please because really stuck now?
I still have the old internal disk that I could boot from but if I do that is there then a way to do something to transfer to the new drive to get it to work on there etc?
Thanks
Mikeif you follow all 7 steps you can directly download a trial here: http://prodesigntools.com/download-adobe-cs4-and-cs3-free-trials-here.html
and activate with your serial number.
if you have a problem downloading, you didn't follow all 7 steps, or your browser does not accept cookies.
the most common problem is caused by failing to meticulously follow steps 1,2 and/or 3 (which adds a cookie to your system enabling you to download the correct version from adobe.com).
failure to obtain that cookie results in an error page being displayed after clicking a link on prodesigntools.com -
I Moved the iTunes folder in My Music to my D:\ Drive to get some extra room on my computer, then when I tried to open iTunes it wouldnt open so I moved the folder back and nothing happened again after I tried to open iTunes... so I deleted all the iTunes files on the D:\ Drive and then reinstalled iTunes... Still the same problem.. can anyone help ?

Moving the /My Music/ folder will not prevent iTunes from opening. That only contains the iTunes library, not the application files. Moving that folder would only get you an empty library when you open iTunes.
I suggest you reinstall iTunes. -

Check the Beginners Guide if you need more info about the Daemons.
Also, make sure that dbus is started in your .xinitrc
For me, I have
dbus-launch --ssh-syntax &
next to last.

There they are! Why does the game not find them? I would be happy to hear whatever insight people here would have to give about this matter.
I've done some googling and there are people having some similar problems but not exactly like this. The closest one would be this I guess.
Well, that still doesn't help me one bit.
Any ideas?
I'm using x86-64 Arch and kernel v.3.0.6-2 with KDE.
+ a GTX460 gfx card with nvidia's 285.05.09-1 drivers.
Last edited by Rayniac (2011-10-18 16:18:24)What lib32 libs do you mean? I tried installing lib32-gtk, turned out I already had it and reinstalling didn't help. Also I fail at making that AUR package:
[rayniac@myhost shadowgrounds-demo]$ makepkg -s

So I tried to do a bit more reading and I have more questions now...

This is really starting to drive me nuts.
Something else interesting I found from that page:

Some useful Env Variables when running 32bit-applications without chroot:
For gtk2 input modules and such
GTK_PATH=/opt/lib32/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/
For pango (lib32-pango includes these config files)
PANGO_RC_FILE="/opt/lib32/config/pango/pangorc"
Iconv (conversion from 'XXXXXXX' is not supported or cannot convert from X to Y -errors)
GCONV_PATH=/opt/lib32/usr/lib/gconv
Library paths without having them in /etc/ld.so.conf
LD_LIBRARY_PATH="/opt/lib32/usr/lib/:/opt/lib32/lib/:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH"
GDK stuff (GdkPixbuf warnings errors criticals, lib32-gtk2 includes the file)
GDK_PIXBUF_MODULE_FILE="/opt/lib32/config/gdk/gdk-pixbuf.loaders"
Could it be that the game is looking for the libraries from a place where the 64-bit libraries are stored and fails because of that?
If so, how do I point it to the right directory? Could it be done with these enviroment variable thingies? -
Fab,
Like you, I'm looking into using the LabVIEW C Generator for an embedded application.
I would be interested in your opinion of the LabVIEW C Generator. Also, roughly how much does it cost?

Hi all,
I'm trying to compile the same generated code (from GCD.vi) but with a Keil µvision 4 ( the default target: Luminary).
I followed line by line the tutoriaI and i used the µvision project (example.uvproj) mentioned in the manual (edited under µvision2).
I have 0 errors but many warnings (35) divided on 3 main types:
warning: #177-D: variable " " was declared but never referenced
warning: #174-D: expression has no effect
warning: #68-D: integer conversion resulted in a change of sign
Have anyone encountered these warnings ?
I'm suspecting my µvision version... if anyone managed to compile the example under µvision 4 or 5 ?
Thank you
Best regards
We never got a reply from NI. I don't know if the bug I found got fixed after LabVIEW 2011.
Perhaps someone from NI can tell us if CAR##327027 was fixed and see if that is related to the issue Himura_Kenshin is seeing.

In order to return to set up assistant, you will need to restore the phone again. -

On my Mac Pro how can I get voiceover to start reading at a specific point in a document, and then continue on to the next paragraph and so on? Thank you. Ed
Welcome to the Apple family!!!!
How can I cause the VO cursor(box) show-up/start?
Press Control-Option and F5. The F5 key is located on the top row of keys 6th key over. This is a toggling "Keyboard Shortcut" for turning VoiceOver on and off.
How can I move the VO cursor to various sentences or paragraphs of an article and have it start reading ... and perhaps even continue reading on to the next paragraph(s) ... even to the end of the article?
How to read a website with VoiceOver
Step 1: Go to the Website
A quick keyboard shortcut is Command-L. This will jump you up to the address bar. Start typing where you want to go. i.e "www.thewebsite.com"
Step 2: Working with Webpage
VoiceOver will automatically start reading the website. You can pause the speech by hitting the 'Control Button'.
If VoiceOver does not being reading the webpage, then you might have to "Interact" with it. If VoiceOver say "HTML Content" then press Control-Option-Space-Down Arrow to interact with the webpage.
Use Control-Option-Right Arrow to move throught the website. This will speak "EVERYTHING" on the page.
Most website that I've found have their articles labeled as 'Heading'. You can jump from heading to heading, by pressing Control-Option-Shift-H.
If you'd like an itemized alphabetical listing of the site, press Control-Option-I
Press Control-Option-Space on the link or article you want to view.
Step 3. Reading from Top to Bottom
Once you found and clicked on the the article/link, use the same 'Heading' command, Control-Option-Shift-H to find the title.
After finding the title, press Control-Option-A will start reading from the title on.
Note: If there are any other items (ads, pictures, etc) it will read those too.
Tip: You might be able to activate a feature called the 'Reader'. The Reader isolates the article and elimanates the ads The keyboard command is Shift-Command-R. You can also find it in the Menu Bar (Command-Option-M) under the word 'View' then 'Show Reader'.
I am using a MACPro with OSX, probably Mavericks 10.9 (where would I look to see if that is the correct information?)
You can find this information under the 'Apple menu' in the Menu Bar. To access the Menu Bar, press Control-Option-M.
Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac. This will open up another window. Use Control-Option-Right Arrow until you hear 'Version'. If you purchased it brand new from Apple within the last six month, more than likely you have Mavericks.

The 'Commands Help' Voiceover Menu. Control-Option-H-H. (hit H twice) is my best friend. It's a searchable VoiceOver Menu with most of the VoiceOver command. Example: You are looking for the 'Read Current Paragraph' keyboard command. Press Control-Option-H-H and then type Paragraph. It will then bring up all the commands with the word paragraph. I believe there are three.
As from the Trackpad Commands, I've copied and pasted below from Appendix A: Commands and Gestures
VoiceOver standard gestures
If you’re using a Multi-Touch trackpad, you can use VoiceOver gestures. VoiceOver provides a set of standard gestures for navigating and interacting with items on the screen. You can’t modify this set of gestures.

Can you get your photos back after the iphone does a restore
Can you get your photos back after the iphone does a restore?
Actually, wrong.
The tech support people can help with Playbook purchased apps. If you've called and they said they cannot, you were lied to.
Even in the link you posted, in #10, it states clearly "App Refund related matters are handled by BlackBerry Customer Care." That, my friend is accessed by the support number. Again, if you were told otherwise, you should inform them of such or ask for a manage/supervisor.
And, you don't have a "Partner ID" because you are not a "Partner". The section you're referring to applies to mobile providers, which are the Partners.
Good luck.

what can i do...help!I don't know if this is a similar problem but I wrote 2 notes yesterday on my iphone. I opened my mail to print them and they appeared as notes but wouldn't load. Then I looked at them on my iphone and I could see the notes but they quickly updated to blank with a time of the last edit the same time I tried opening them on my computer.
Yesterday I updated to 4.3.4 I don't know if somehow that affected them. Are they stored somewhere else. Can I get them back? -
I'm trying up upgrade to lion, but having issues. Then icon is on the screen but it says paused and I can't get it to start the download
Ah, okay. This is a message that comes up when a developer has developed software for the Mac, but has not registered with Apple. Apple does this to help keep viruses and malware out of your Mac.
To be able to run this, go to System Preferences and the General tap. At the bottom is the option to change this. Select the section "All applications downloaded from:" and change it to Anywhere.
Just be careful what you install after this and only download from reputable sites (like Apple.com).
Hope this helps!
