[solved] Console font not displaying characters properly

I have set up /etc/vconsole.conf to read as follows, as laid down in the unofficial beginners guide (or somewhere linked to from there)
KEYMAP=us
FONT=ter-114n
When I boot, I get the proper font (that's one of the terminus-font s). But if i do something like
% mv "hi" "hi"
the characters that SHOULD be apostrophes are in fact... The greek letter rho or something. I don't know. However, if I run "setterm ter-114n" it loads both the font correctly, as well as the mapping. I cannot for the life of me figure out where it's getting that correct mapping, or how I can just load it automatically.
Anybody know what else I need to do to have it set itself up?
Thanks

Maybe your problem is similar to this one, read the bug report.

  • [SOLVED] Console Font Not Retained After Reboot

Hi, again.  Happy to report that I successfully installed Arch Linux last night, with no problems whatsoever.  Thanks to those who addressed my concerns.  Still reading up on the package manager, user and group management, etc.
Anyway, one of the first things I noticed is that the console font gets reset after every reboot.  I need to manually type "setfont Lat2-Terminus16" - which works just fine, except for the annoyance in having to do that each time I boot up.  My /etc/vconsole.conf has the following:
    KEYMAP=us
    FONT=Lat2-Terminus16
    Following the solution described here:
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=155876
I added 'consolefont' (without quotes) to the beginning (first item) of the HOOKS line in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf.  Then I rebuilt the initramfs by typing "mkinitcpio -p linux".  Again, no errors during the rebuild.
I've rebooted several times, but there's no change...  my selected console font is not retained.
Can anyone point what I'm doing wrong, or offer ideas?  Thanks.

    Have you tried
If the fonts seems to not change on boot, or change only temporarily, it is most likely that they got reset when graphics driver was initialized and console was switched to framebuffer. To avoid this, load your graphics driver earlier. See for example KMS#Early_KMS_start or other ways to setup your framebuffer before /etc/vconsole.conf gets applied.

I am on arch linux with the newest chromium.  It does not display github properly, even though I have installed the ttf packages that I read fixed rendering issues.  This is what a github repo looks like on chromium: http://i.imgur.com/pN6QSRp.png  Firefox displays it correctly.  Also, the encoding is set to UTF-8 and the font is droid sans (I tried many fonts)

Ok, well that little D2 looking thing after 'OREUtils/' is supposed to be a '+'
Here is the code that performs that magic:
    <form action="/login?return_to=%2FOpenRedstoneEngineers%2FOREUtilsV2" aria-label="Sign in to make or propose changes" class="js-new-blob-form tooltipped tooltipped-e new-file-link" method="post"><span aria-label="Sign in to make or propose changes" class="js-new-blob-submit octicon octicon-plus" data-test-id="create-new-git-file" role="button"></span></form>
So, it does not look like a font thing (on the surface).  Let's go look at the js-new-blub-submit class and where does octicon-plus come from...

  • Font not displaying on Reports Output (RHEL 5) for 10g

Hi, I know I've posted a question in the past about a font not displaying on Report Output for my Arial, Arial Narrow, and Courier New fonts. I worked with Oracle Support and found that Metalink Note#261879.1 fixed my problem with those 3 fonts. I ran the scripts and now that part works great.
However, I have one font "ARIALUNI.TTF" that will not work. This is out specific barcode font we use. I've pushed it on Linux from my Windows by pushing it as a binary file to the ORACLE_HOME/guicommon/tk/admin/TTF directory. I even put it in the directory for TTF on Metalink Notoe 261829.1 and let it create the files, but it still doesn't find it when I ran a report that uses this font.
I tried using font subsetting via the uiprint.ali and make a reference but it still doesn't seem to work.
Is there something I'm missing that would cause any of these not to work. I thought maybe some files had to be created under the guicommon/tk/admin/AFM file directory but I'm not sure.
I just want to have my 2 or 3 reports that use this barcode to work. Once I get them, I'm done and all my font issues are resolved. Any help is appreciated.
    Chris

They are probably a very old Type 1 font. Try checking the dates on the font files. Your best bet would be to get the OpenType versions of those fonts and install them.

  • Fonts not displaying properly (square symbols)

I'm trying to troubleshoot an error in a 3rd party vendor's java applet where fonts are not displaying properly. It seems as though when the arial bold font is used, it does not display from a particular computer. (this is a company terminal server, by the way).
To illustrate what I mean, I've posted links to small images showing a working example from another machine:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v317/d0hboy/font_problem_working.gif
    .. and a non-working example:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v317/d0hboy/font_problem_error.gif
(apologies, I don't know how to include images in this forum).
Vendor support can only provide support so far as requiring a certain version of a JRE is installed -- after that, it's up to me. I've tried comparing the two JRE/lib/Fonts directories and Windows regional settings but they are the same. I've also tried setting the Sun Java console trace level to DEBUG while Internet Explorer is running the applet.
Is there any where I can look to find out what font is missing, or whether the "JavaFontNotFound" exception is firing? Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Make sure that you're using the correct font. Arial Bold does not provide full Unicode support. Thsi webpage may assist you:

  • Fonts not displaying properly in Creative Cloud files

I just noticed that fonts are not displaying properly in my Creative Cloud files.  The strange thing is, they continue to display correctly in files I uploaded prior to release - it's just in files I upload now that the fonts are reverting to some generic display font.
For reference, here is a file uploaded before release:
    https://creative.adobe.com/file/7ba1e1dc-993e-4f85-bf2d-7ec4e099929e
And here is the same file uploaded just now:
    https://creative.adobe.com/file/82f1ed16-8f8c-45f5-9127-791f08ad9ec9
The display problem also applies to downloads of the newer file as a JPG, PNG or PDF, although the fonts are still present in the downloaded original file.  With the older uploaded file, download as PDF is not available (presumably because this was a release feature), but download as JPG and PNG outputs a file with the correct fonts intact.
This is a serious problem, because it makes previews inaccurate as well as making the download feature almost useless.  Was it perhaps an unintended side-effect of turning on download as PDF?

On a related topic, here's another Illustrator file with fonts displaying incorrectly, but this time it also has problems with the download links - the options for PNG, JPG and PDF do not appear at all.
    https://creative.adobe.com/file/2d6d788d-01e4-488d-90b8-46823f2017e2
This is all very strange, because they did appear in a previous version of this very same file:
    https://creative.adobe.com/file/dae50071-9596-44ce-b525-3f52663f8cca
Could it perhaps be related to the strange font behaviour?

  • DW CS5 - fonts not displaying properly

You have a corrupt font on your system that needs to be removed.  See if you can run the font through What the font ( http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/ ) or see if you can go through and remove that stencil-like font.

  • Fonts not displaying properly after 10.0 update (Mac OS X)

After I updated to Firefox 10.0, almost all websites now default to Times Roman, even after I have set Helvetica as my default font as well as have checked "allow pages to choose their own fonts".
I tried trashing prefs, reinstalling the previous version of FF but to no avail.
Never had this issue before and all fonts are displaying properly in Safari and Chrome.
    Any ideas?

Ok repaired permissions and now ''some'' fonts display properly but some are still times roman. Even explicitly setting fonts in Firebug doesn't change them...

  • Apache FOP not displaying Cyrillic properly

    Hi,
I am using apache FOP to generate pdfs' in Russian. I have embedded the fonts into the application but the output is being displayed as html numerical codes.
The html numerical codes are stored in the database but I am unable to render them properly. I know the fonts are embedded correctly because when I apply the fonts to English text, Russian characters are displayed in the pdf correctly.
e.g the Russian characters are displayed like this:
    &#1087;&#1088;&#1086;&#1076;... etc
Why are my codes not displaying properly ? I'm a bit lost at this point.
    thanks in advance

    Hi,
    thanks for the reply.
To clarify things a bit. My web page is submitting Russian text which is being stored in an Oracle database. This text is being stored in the &#xxxx; format. This formatting is displayed properly in a web browser but I am using Apache FOP to produce a pdf and the Russian text is not being displayed as the Russian characters but as the relative &#xxxx; codes. So these codes are not being translated back into their Russian Cyrillic symbols.
I have configured FOP and embedded the Cyrillic TTF but these codes are still not displayed. I can apply the Cyrillic font style to English text and Russian characters are displayed so it seems that that cyrillic TTF is embedded properly.
I am not generating an serialized xml file but rather creating a javax.xml.transform.dom.DOMSource object and with my xsl file I create the pdf code snippet below:

  • Thangsan font not displayed correctly on SMARTFORM

    Hi Experts,
I am having a problem on displaying (preview) and printing a smartform containing a thangsan font. The characters are displayed/printed as #####. Please advise. Is this a printer problem?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
There can be 2 causes for your problem:
    1. you are not printing on the correct printer; if you use LOCAL printer, try using LOCC printer, if such a printer exists in your system, or search a printer with device type CNSAPWIN; This device type handles the printing of asian languages.
    2. if the smartform is associated with a standard transaction / output type, try creating the output in that language; or just pass the language in the control parameters structure.
    Hope this solves your problem.

  • Symbol font not displaying

I'm creating a presentation and I need to use Greek letters. The symbol font is installed on my computer (font book sees it an displays it properly). Keynote 2.0.2 does not want to use this font. Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to fix this? I have done 'duct tape' solutions like using LaTeX to create a pdf that shows the desired character and then importing it as an image, but that is not ideal.

I solved it by switching to the MMGreek font. Didn't even know I had it. It's a little counterintuitive ('mu' is not linked to 'm') but it'll work. I guess I should look through my whole list before I get too excited.

  • Safari Bitstream Vera Sans font not displaying

    Hello,
I have a font display problem in Safari 4.
I upgraded to Snow Leopard and Safari 4.0.3, and web pages which specify in the CSS file:
"font-family: 'Bitstream Vera Sans', Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"
are not displaying properly. The entire page, except where a different font is used, is replaced with a character that looks like letter "A" with a square around it.
If I inspect the text element, then uncheck the font-family line, all characters display readably. What could be happening?
    Thanks!

I was having this problem, too. I fixed it by I fixed it by downloading the font via the "Download" button at http://www.dafont.com/bitstreamverasans.font, decompressing the downloaded zip file, selecting the four ".ttf" files in the Finder, right-clicking and choosing "Open With.../Font Book.app", clicking "Install Font" on the resulting window. Then, in order to clear the font cache, I did the following in a Terminal window:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
    sudo atsutil databases -removeUser
    sudo atsutil server -shutdown
    sudo atsutil server -ping

  • Korean font not displaying correctly. Internationalization Issue

    Hello,
I'm not sure if this is an internationalization issue but I have an Adobe Air project that isn't displaying Korean correctly. I basically have created a MovieClip in Flash CC with a textfield child. When this movieclip is instanced in Air, it's text is dynamically assigned from a web service. The font used works fine except for Korean so we had to switch fonts when using Korean text. This is where things get interesting. If I try to programmatically change the textformat.font to use the Korean font, the font switches but just the Korean characters aren't supported. However if I set the textfield's font to the Korean one in Flash CC, everything displays fine. The font is embedding the same in both instances and is including 'All' characters.
I'm not sure if this is a bug or if I have to add a flag for Korean support somewheres in the build settings. I've created work around for now which has two textfields, one with the font we need and one for korean only. As the data from the webservice is parsed it detects for Korean characters in the string and if it finds them it makes sure the Korean textfield is used. Kind of a dirty way to do it but it doesn't seem to like changing the font family around.
    Anyone else notice this?

It's the latest AIR 15 SDK with the Flex framework.swc and framework_fb.swf added for binding support
I overwrote the code since it was only a couple lines but here's what I was doing for the way that broke
    var tf : TextFormate = this._sknPageShield.pageName.getTextFormat();
    tf.font = "Arial Unicode MS";
    this._sknPageShield.pageName.setTextFormat(tf);
The font changes because english characters showed up, however even though I click embed all fonts, korean characters do not display. I have to set the font on the textfield using the Flash CC tools and it works fine.

  • Fonts not displaying on some computers

I created a document in Microsoft Publisher on my laptop (running Windows XP SP2) and created a .pdf using the "Save as postscript" funcion and Acrobat Distiller (5.0)
I emailed it to our webmaster who put it up on our webpage.
Now, when I go to view it from the website on my desktop computer (Windows XP SP2) in Mozilla Firefox, the fonts are not displaying properly.
As a test, I emailed it to myself and tried to view it from just within Acrobat on the desktop computer and they're not displaying properly that way, either.
The document displays correctly when viewed from my laptop, both in Acrobat and in Mozilla Firefox.
I am concerned that others will not be able to view the fonts either, and as the purpose of this document is to have clients choose the font they prefer for ordering merchandise, it is imperative that they be able to see the fonts!
Can anyone help me troubleshoot this problem?
    Thank you!
    Tracy

Try printing to the Adobe PDF printer and selecting a settings of print or press (not the standard). Saving to PS is likely a Publisher issue and they may not have indicated to embed the fonts. You might be able to get around that in Distiller if you choose a settings file other than Std (same as for using the printer).

  • Google fonts not displaying correctly since updating to Firefox 31.0

Since updating to Firefox 31.0, the vast majority of Google / web fonts are not displaying correctly, including icons that are being replaced with random characters. When I view the Google web fonts page, only a few display correctly, the rest just default to a sans-serif font.
    - I've tried running in safe mode with no add-ons enabled.
    - I've tried disabling all add-ons then re-enabling one by one.
    - I've checked the tickbox in the font settings for 'Allow pages to use their own fonts' is ticked
Any help appreciated, it's got quite frustrating now.
    Thanks, Greg

You can do a font test to see if you can identify corrupted font(s).
You can try different default fonts and temporarily disable website fonts to test the selected default font.
    *Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced
*[ ] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
You can check for problems with preferences.
You can check the <b>gfx.downloadable_fonts.enabled</b> pref on the <b>about:config</b> page and make sure that it is set to true (if necessary double-click the line to toggle its value).
Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Resetting_preferences
Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.
    See "Creating a profile":
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox#Profile_issues
If the new profile works then you can transfer files from a previously used profile to the new profile, but be cautious not to copy corrupted files to avoid carrying over problems.
Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.
