[Solved] consolekit and polkit under systemd

I was wondering if I still had vestiges of the sysv init left on my system since I have supposedly gone completely over to systemd.
The consolekit wiki page strongly suggests that systemd is incompatible with it. If I do "systemctl list-unit-files --no-pager|grep -i console" I see
console-kit-daemon.service disabled
console-kit-log-system-restart.service static
console-kit-log-system-start.service static
console-kit-log-system-stop.service static
console-shell.service disabled
Yet when I do "systemctl --all --no-pager|grep -i console" for some reason I see
console-kit-daemon.service loaded active running Console Manager
console-...m-start.service loaded active exited Console System Startup Logg
It strikes me as strange for a loaded, active, running service to be disabled. Anyway should consolekit be "uninstalled" and completely eliminated?
Polkit causes somewhat similar questions although it is less obvious from the wiki that it is incompatible with systemd.
Journalctl does show systemd starting up polkit and consolekit, but it also shows several messages, "console-kit-daemon[553]: missing action", and for polkitd it shows both a "Registered Authentication Agent" and later a "Unregistered Authentication Agent" - for several different buses, apparently. Not sure if that is normal.
Just wondering how all this fits together, and if some of it should be gone now that systemd is here.

I wonder if there are any more things like that? I was a little surprised there were no warnings on the systemd conversion to get rid of consolekit, or that the compatibility package didn't take care of it. Maybe there were warnings and I just missed them.
I also wonder about the "ck-launch-session" at the end of my .xinitrc file. The consolekit wiki article says,
An easy method to be able to remove ConsoleKit is to automatically log in to a virtual console and start X from there. It is important that, as mentioned in the latter article, the X server is started on the same virtual console that you log in to, otherwise logind can not keep track of the user session. You can then simply remove ck-launch-session from your ~/.xinitrc.
I don't quite understand that. Just delete the line? Or does something else (having to do with systemd) go in there? And why the virtual console bit? Why not just go to single user and handle it there?
Here is my .xinitrc:
#!/bin/sh
# ~/.xinitrc
# Executed by startx (run your window manager from here)
if [ -d /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d ]; then
for f in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/*; do
[ -x "$f" ] && . "$f"
done
unset f
fi
# exec gnome-session
# exec startkde
# exec startxfce4
# ...or the Window Manager of your choice
exec ck-launch-session startlxde

  • [SOLVED] cups not started under systemd

Under systemd cupsd is not started automatically; but manually run
    systemctl start cups
start it. In trying to figure out what happens I see that the install section of cups.service contains the following:
    WantedBy=printer.target
But nothing seems to depends on printer target. I have just changed that by
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
and everything works. Anyway, either there is a bug that I have corrected, either I have missed something. The original printer.target seems to have nothing that depends on it. Could someone tell me what's the proper way to configure printing under systemd.

Now cups start properly and everything is fine. I do not know if is due to an upgrade or so, but I put solved now. Thanks for the explanation of the printer target.

  • [SOLVED] AIF and LVM under peculiar circumstances

I am developing a virtual machine builder called varch and I am using aif to do the installs. So far it works will with regular partitions, but I am having trouble with lvm. I am fairly confident my BLOCK_DEVICES variable is accurate but aif fails to run lvcreate.
So let me paint the environment, varch is a python application which takes an aif config file as an argument, varch creates a raw disk image and then makes it available by using kpartx. The disk image becomes available on a loopback device, like /dev/loop0, and partitions become available under /dev/mapper/loop0px.
Varch takes the aif file and edits it to ensure that aif does not modify anything on the actual running system by changing the config file to point to the loopback device.
Then varch runs aif -p automatic <modified config>
like I said, it works great with regular partitions, but fails on lvm, aif makes the pv and the vg but never calls lvcreate.
What I am asking is, can someone help me navigate AIF a bit so I can figure out why it is failing?  Here is the aif config I am using with varch:

Why do you have a colon instead of a semicolon between lvm-lv and yes? on the line where you define the LV's on the VG.
    Probably that's it.

  • [Solved]Slock and Unclutter under Xmonad

    Hello,
I am currently using Xmonad with unclutter. I recently installed slock but I noticed that it doesn't play nice with unclutter. When locking, the screen will automatically unlock after a few seconds. Removing unclutter resolves the problem. I very much like both software and would like to use them in conjunction.
Does anyone have an idea on how to fix this?
    Thanks
Last edited by The Stranger (2014-07-28 11:39:51)

I've found the reason why slock is failing(and thats probably the reason for sflock ans sxlock too as they're forks of slock):
slock immediately unlocks the screen if it is unable to grab the mouse pointer. unclutter with grab option already grabs it. Therefore slock can't grab it.
As a workaround it is possible to add an option to slock for disabling mouse grabbing. Don't know if this is good but I just tried it and it works:
Here is my repo on bitbucket
make install it and then invoke it with
    <installpath-to-slock>slock -nomousegrab
NOTE: I didn't change copyright statement and version and such stuff so it's not quite correct at the moment....just a quick hack

    Hi
And without info - it's near to impossibly to help. Try my general troubleshooting note:
    Troubleshooting note
When iMovie doesn't work as intended this can be due to a lot of reasons
iMovie Pref files got corrupted - trash it/they and iMovie makes new and error free one's
problem in iMovie Cache folder - trash Cache.mov and Cache.plist
Creating a new User-Account and log into this
This forces iMovie to create all pref. and cache files new and error free
Event or Project got corrupted - try to make a copy and repair
a Codec is used that doesn't work (even though iMovie and/or iDVD tries to / they fail in the end)
version miss match of QuickTime Player / iMovie / iDVD
preferences are wrong - Repair Preferences
other hard disk problem - Repair Hard Disk (Disk Util tool - but start Mac from ext HD or DVD)
External hard disks - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted to work with Video
( UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange - works for most other things - but not for Video )
USB-flash-memories - usually do not work
Net-work connected hard disks - usually do not work (most often not fast enough and WRONGLY FORMATTES as DOS etc)
iPhoto Library got problems - let iPhoto select another one or repair it. Re-build this first then try to re-start iMovie. When iMovie starts-up it first look trough this iPhoto library and if faulty it all Halt’s.
    This You do by
    First -  close iPhoto
    Secondly - on start up of iPhoto - Keep {cmd and alt-keys down}
Thirdly - now select all five options presented
THEN - WAIT a long long time (>20 hours are not strange)
free space on Start-Up (Mac OS) hard disk to low (<1Gb) - I never go under 25Gb free space for SD-Video (4-5 times more for HD)
external devices interferes - turn off Mac - disconnect all of them and - Start up again and re-try
GarageBand fix - start GB - play a few notes - Close it again and now try iMovie
Screen must be set to million-colors
    Third-party plug-ins doesn't work OK
Run "Cache Out X", clear out all caches and restarts the Mac
Let Your Mac be turned on during one night. At about midnight there is a set of maintenance programs that runs and tidying up. This might help
Turn off Your Mac - and disconnect Mains - for about 20-30 minutes - at least this resets the FireWire port.
In QuickTime - DivX, 3ivx codec, Flip4Mac, Perian etc - might be problematic - temporarily move them out and re-try
(I deleted the file "3ivxVideoCodec.component" located in Mac HD/Library/Quicktime and this resolved my issue.)
    buenrodri wrote
I solved the problem by removing the file: 3ivxVideoCodec.component. after that, up-dated iMovie runs ok.
Last resort: Trash all of iMovie and re-install it

If you continue to have issues with permissions, the solution i use is to simply run MPD as my normal user, storing all the necessary directories and files under ~/.mpd and just pointing it at the config file I stuck there:
    $ mpd ~/.mpd/config
No more permissions issues! There's an explanation of this in the wiki.

  • (solved) No printer detected under any application except Cups browsin

    Hi everybody,
After an update I've lost all the listed printers : when I want to print, whatever the application (evince, libreoffice, epdfviewer, even firefox...) the printer list is empty.
I use cups, which is correctly running under systemd. From a browser, I can get into http://localhost:631/, define new printers, and also print page test !
I browse under my normal account, and need to switch to root account only to define new printers and for special operations (as I used to do before my upgrade).
I checked this behavior whith 2 different printers (the problem is on a EEE, so, I can move it) : both are HP (PSC 1315 which needs PSC 1310 PPD, and LaserJet 8100 which normaly goes fine).
As mentionned on the CUPS wiki page, I had to remove the foomatic packages, and even the phplip package. (I have the PPD file).
Does someone have any idea ? Thanks :-)

    In order to sumerize :
Here, I have 2 computers, with Arch, and one HP printer (PSC 1310, with USB). Both have the same packages installed, mainly cups related packages.
On the one where Cups is working, I have extract the .ppd from the right directory : /usr/share/cups/model/ and copied it to the same directory but on my EEE (the laptop where printers have disappeared after update)
Then, on the EEE, I ran cups under my browser, add a new printer with the USB I just switch from the right computer. Everything is going well, even printing a test page.
But when I want to print a document, still no printer is listed...

  • [SOLVED] Unexpected problems after installing systemd

    Hi there,
Since I read that Arch is going to start using systemd I decided to install it. I followed the systemd wiki article (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Sy … g_to_start) and at first sight everything seemed OK and I didn't have much problems with it. My only serious problem was that the network-manager plasmoid in KDE was not working properly - it stated that Network Manager was not started. After searching the forums I found out that the problem was due to my pam login file for lightdm not configured properly and I managed to fix the problem. However after several days of use I found out the following additional problems:
    1. Removable drives not working - before usb flash drives and sd cards were automounted by KDE when i inserted them. Now nothing happens (I tested with a usb flash drive and an sd memory card).
    2. My laptop's touchpad feels very slugish and scroll is not working. After I tried to check the touchpad settings in the KDE control centre I found out while all the touchpad settings are present, they are greyed out and can't be changed.
    3. Sound is extremely choppy in wine games. In native linux games (Faster Than Light for example) it is OK. It is also OK in other native linux applications like clementine and mplayer. I am using pulseaudio which i've set up in accordance with the pulseaudio wiki article.
I tried to recall any problems I may have had while setting up systemd and the onlything ordinary i can thing about was that when i tried to do "systemctl enable dbus.service" (because the systemd wiki article advised me to "systemctl enable" all daemons listed in my former rc.conf) I got the following output: "The unit files have no [Install] section. They are not meant to be enabled using systemctl.". On the other hand the dbus.service seems to be running just fine:
"dbus.service                                 loaded active running       D-Bus System Message Bus"
Has anyone encounter similar problems when using systemd?
    Best regards!

I had some time to tweak my system and i have an update on my problems - the 1st and 2nd problems were solved by reverting back to initscripts and setting up systemd again. I can swear i followed the same instructions (on the arch linux wiki page) as before but somehow after it did it those problems disappeared. I am now running a pure systemd system and everything appears to be OK. Regarding the 3rd problem it turned out that it was a pulseaudio issue. After I set up pulseaudio initialy I checked wine and it was running fine but apparently I have tweaked my pulseaudio setup since then and this broke wine. Systemd being the biggest change to my system before i detected the problem, i assumed that it was the reaseon. However it seems that pulseaudio was the culprit and after a little tweking with its configuration file it seems to be OK now. If anyone has the problem, this setting described in the arc wiki was the reason for my problem - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pu … _crackling . Using the default set up (as opposed to the option described in the wiki) solved my problem.
Pse, here's the output of what you requested, ran as a normal user (in pastebin):

Do you need to use consolekit and dbus?
Have you tried it using just startx or xinit?
    Is .xinitrc executable?
That's all I've got. Hope it helps.
Problem solved. i was missing xorg-xinit from the repos. pacman installation fixed the issue and XAUTH

    Hi,
I am getting a warning message on screen, saying that myiPad hasn't been backed up to iCloud for two weeks, and advising under what circumstances the message appears. My problem is, is that I have backed it up, but am unable to remove the message, and whilst the message is there, the iPad is frozen, and I cannot do anything.
Has any other user had such a problem, and if so, how did they rectify it.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Try this.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up

This is due to the different changes Adobe has gone through and unfortunately I used different emails at certain times.

Under one Adobe ID you can have one CC only,if by accident you have purchased two CC under one account, it needs to be cancelled & refunded, please contact Adobe Support at

If all you did was rename your ID, you can go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, choose Delete from My iPhone when prompted, then sign back in with your renamed ID.  Deleting the account only deletes the account and any data you are syncing with iCloud from your phone, not from iCloud.  Provided you are signing back into the same account and not changing accounts, your data will be synced back to your phone when you sign back in.
If, however, you are changing to a new account with a new ID, choose Keep on My iPhone when prompted.  Then choose Merge when you sign into the new account and turn your iCloud syncing back on to upload your data to the new account.
Before deleting the account, save you photo stream photos to your camera roll (tap Edit, tap all the photos, tap Share, tap Save to Camera Roll).

Apple's one year limited warranty covers hardware... not physical damage!

  • I had an app created by a friend and submitted under his name as the developer.  We need to transfer the app to me. I wanted to confirm the current proceedure for transferring ownership of an app.

I had an app created by a friend and submitted under his name as the developer.  He is no longer doing apps so we need to transfer ownership of the app to me under my name. I found an explaination from June 11, 2013 from The App Store team and wanted to confirm if this is the current proceedure. (see below) Thank you.
"Starting June 11, 2013 this has officially become possible. Here's the official note:
    Dear developer,
Apps can now be transferred from one developer to another within iTunes Connect, for example after an acquisition or when a distribution deal expires. Transferring the ownership of an app does not affect the app’s availability on the App Store. All ratings and reviews will be transferred and your customers will continue to have access to all available app updates.
To transfer an app, go to the app’s App Summary page in the Manage Your Applications module on iTunes Connect and click Transfer App. Make sure that:
    • Your account is active
    • You have accepted the most current version of your contracts
    • Your app has at least one approved version
    • Your app is in the Ready for Sale, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Developer Rejected, or Developer Removed from Sale state
    • Any associated In-App Purchases are in the Ready to Submit, Ready for Sale, Rejected, Developer Removed from Sale, or Approved state
    • You know the Apple ID of the recipient’s Team Agent and their Team ID.
For more information on app transfer, see the video tutorial on iTunes Connect. To find answers to common questions about app transfer, see the FAQ on iTunes Connect.
    Regards, The App Store team"

    What do you want?
    You have the procedure.
    Just do it.

Another problem is that in Bridge (version 2.0.0.975) I can no longer see thumbnails of RAW files from my Canon 40D that I saw before.
Should I upgrade ACR? which is the latest version supported on my Mac?
