(SOLVED) CPU maxes out without warning.

Successfully installed Arch on HPdv5000 laptop. Using LXDM/LXDE. Solved wlan configuration.
Current problem is connecting to LAN. Followed Samba procedure prescribed by Arch, (as best I could). Edited smb.config to my existing workgroup name.
In pcmanfm I would click go-network drives which would then freeze pcmanfm, Next, the cpu monitor would go from flatline to top of scale, fan would start and not stop. My only escape was reboot. I then entered smb in pcmanfm address bar and it auto filled with my workgroup name. attempting to open the workgroup directory would result in failed to mount windows share.
Home network is combination of Win7 laptop, WinXP desktop, Ubuntu 10.10 server, Lubuntu desktop and the HPdv5k laptop.
Lastly, the cpu behavior is occurring without initiating the previous triggers.
Can someone help?

Another idea: Forced shutdown due to overheating. Have you recently cleaned the system fan or have taken a look at the CPU/GPU temps[1]?
The Nvidia 140M alone is producing a lot of heat. And isn't the Intel C2D T9300 running even hotter than e.g. a T7500?
[1] I'm using tpfancontrol to read out the temps of my T61. But remember to set the cooling mode to BIOS. (Or manual and speed = 7)

    Hi birolayg,
    Welcome to the HP forum!
Thank you for your post, I will do my best to aid in this endeavor!
I understand that you are experiencing an issue with the battery. Here is a document on Testing and Calibrating the Battery (Windows 7), that I hope helps.
When posting it is very important to include your exact model of computer and the operating system you are running. How Do I Find My Model Number or Product Number?  This helps us to locate information for your specific system as each is a little different.

  • Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15" Blacks Out Without Warning

Quick Summary of Problem: My MacBook Pro is currently shutting down without warning. It would be more accurate to say that the screen goes blank but the machine remains on as can be heard by the fan. Nothing resolves it without powering down and restarting. It has occurred when attached to a power source or via the battery.
My machine specs: Mid 2010 MacBook Pro 15” with 500GB hard drive, 8GB RAM, Intel HD Graphics/nVidia GeForce GT 330M with 512MB, anti-glare 15” screen with max resolution 1680 x 1050). Running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with 2013-001 Security Patch installed.
I have AppleCare which commenced when I first bought the machine in July 2010.
System Profiler says my battery condition is ‘Normal’. Cycle count: 610.
Detailed Summary of Problem: Back in January, my MacBook Pro shut down several times without warning. Each time, I was creating selections on high resolution imagery in Adobe Photoshop CS5.
Not long after, I saw the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ relased on Feb 12 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1633) and installed it via Software Update. By coincidence or not, my MBP behaved much better afterwards and the seemingly random blank screens requiring a restart disappeared.
But then I installed the ‘Security Update 2013-001 (Snow Leopard)’(http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1642) via Software Update and that’s the only thing I can really remember changing to my system. Since then, the black-outs have reappeared. As before, I was usually using Photoshop and working with high resolution imagery. However, one time the machine blacked-out, I was simply doing a two-finger scroll on the built-in trackpad whilst in Chrome (Version 25.0.1364.172).
The blackout has occurred twice now not being connected to power, and twice with it being connected to a wall socket. Needless to say, I lost work in Photoshop (even though I’ve begun to save more regularly) and now it feels like it’s a ticking time bomb and I don’t know when it’s going to go off.
One thing I’ve found rather odd is that in the crash log, the kernal version doesn’t seem right for Snow Leopard:
    Kernel version:
    Darwin Kernel Version 10.8.0: Tue Jun  7 16:33:36 PDT 2011; root:xnu-1504.15.3~1/RELEASE_I386
    System model name: MacBookPro6,2 (Mac-F22586C8)
The full crash log can be found at the bottom of this post.
    Fixes I’ve tried:
    1) Resetting the NV-RAM has done nothing. (was suggested
    2) I’ve tried reinstalling the ‘MacBook Pro SMC Firmware Update 1.7’ by downloading the manual installer from Apple, however it now says ‘Alert: This software is not supported on your system’ which in a way makes sense given I’d already applied the firmware update, but a more accurate message along the lines of ‘This firmware update has already been installed’ would be more reassuring.
    3) If all else fails, I could resort to copying over a backup I created with Carbon Copy Cloner, which was done before I reinstalled the 2013-001 Security Update for Snow Leopard. But that’s a bit of a headache too, because my documents I’ve updated since the backup will be out of sync. Another reason this isn’t a great solution is that I can’t take advantage of the 2013-001 security update, nor future ones.
Any suggestions? There’s probably no good time for something like this to happen, but this is a particularly bad time – I’m currently beginning design and finished art freelancing and brushing up on some applications I haven’t used in years. Nor am I going to make an impression meeting with recruiters without my folio being presented from my MBP.
I’ve already booked a Genius appointment 2.5 days from now, but all help and ideas greatly appreciated!

I am sorry. The page that came up has an AD for issues with a 13" MacBook Pro in the corner. I read the AD as if it were part of the article and assumed the whole page referred to the 13" model. My Mistake.
However, the issue described by TS4088 is not a soldering problem. It is a Latent Defect -- a flaw built into certain batches of those chips from the day they were packaged and installed.
If your Mac fails the VST test used to detect this Latent Defect, re-flowing the solder is likely to have NO EFFECT on its performance -- the solution is the remove the defective chip and replace with a good one.
There certainly can be problems in these and other Macs where a re-flow would be beneficial. But I caution Readers not to generalize your solution to Macs that are known to fail VST. Re-flow alone will not solve the Latent Defect problem.

  • Macbook Air 2011 CPU Maxes Out then Overheats and Shuts Down...

I've been having this problem for a while now but have learned to deal with it with SMC Fan Control to basically keep my fans maxed out at all times. This is obviously not ideal.
The problem is that at any given time some small, random task in activity monitor shows CPU usage that is very high, often at least 50% CPU and other times as high as 120% It has happened with the tasks like dock, safari web content and virtually any other task you can imagine.
For example, I just tried emptying my recycling bin and it hung half way through then my computer shut down. What is going on here?
    Details:
    - Macbook Air mid-2011 running Mavericks
    - Never have more than one app open at any given time, usually just Safari with about 5 tabs, max
    - 3rd party applications running in background include Dropbox, Copy, Backblaze, Flux, Sophos anti virus, Jumpcut, Caffeine and that's it
If I'm doing something like a Time Machine backup, I have to disable Wifi, max out the fans and only then will the Macbook Air remain cool enough to complete the backup, otherwise the Time Machine process maxes out the CPU, overheats and shuts down. This happens with virtually everything now.
How can I start trouble shooting this problem? I've run the hardware and system repair checks with no results, done an SMC reset, etc.
This really seems like a software issue more than anything, like something related to the way tasks/processes are handled...any ideas anyone? This is such an annoying problem!

Do the problems also occur in "Safe Mode"?
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • CPU maxing out with Google Image search, some other websites

When I try to use Google Image search or load SBNation website articles, Firefox's CPU usage maxes out and it becomes unresponsive for a good 10 seconds before it has loaded everything. This is a new problem that has popped up within the last few weeks.
I've tried disabling all addons and plugins, removing cookies, clearing cache, downgrading from the beta version to 23 and none seem to make any difference.

    Hello,
Try disabling graphics hardware acceleration. Since this feature was added to Firefox, it has gradually improved, but there still are a few glitches.
You might need to restart Firefox in order for this to take effect, so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.).
    Then perform these steps:
*Click the orange Firefox button at the top left, then select the "Options" button, or, if there is no Firefox button at the top, go to Tools > Options.
*In the Firefox options window click the ''Advanced'' tab, then select "General".
*In the settings list, you should find the ''Use hardware acceleration when available'' checkbox. Uncheck this checkbox.
*Now, restart Firefox and see if the problems persist.
Additionally, please check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in the following Knowledge base articles:
    * [[Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems]]
    * [[Upgrade your graphics drivers to use hardware acceleration and WebGL]]
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • Updated to 3.1 and CPU maxed out causing click and pops

I upgraded to Mainstage 3.1 and now the CPU meter is maxed out when I change presets and also MainStage runs at 100 % causing clicks and breaks in the sound when using a vst plugin S-Gear by Scuffham.  Earlier versions work fin at 20% to 50% CPU.  I can't go back to version 3.0.4.
    Help!

In preferences, try raising the I/O Buffer size in preferences. Then lower the driver latency setting. It seemed to help CPU load.

  • Cpu maxed out at all times..

I'm very concerned about my Gnome install. I updated for the first time in a while, and rebooted - just to see how things were. I started X (no issues), and Gnome loaded quickly. The problem is that my CPU is now maxed out for no reason, and it never drops between the 95% mark. Gnome system monitor is reporting 100% usage, but when I check my processes with it, I can't find the culprit. htop shows that X is using 94-100% CPU - something that I find hard to believe.
    Here is htop output;

  • Cpu maxing out!!!!

my processors are maxing out. i have portal 30983 and db 8174...everytime i make a page request the processor spikes through the roof. there are only 30 or so users hitting the portal so the workload shouldn't be that bad.
the processors are dual 550's on one box and my prod box is dual 800's
any help would be greatly appreciated

Read through the steps of "Troubleshooting Issues in Oracle9iAS Portal Architecture & Performance" at the above link on PortalCenter. There are a number of things in that document that check the validity of the cache configuration (etc) that should be followed to ensure that the basic configuration is working correctly.

  • T61 lights out without warning

My computer turns off as if power was terminated without any warning and then it it usually powers up again.  Sometimes it gets stuck with lights flashing in a particular pattern.  I can't use the power off switch to turn off the computer so I must pull out the battery and remove the DC adapter.  Yesterday it seemed to have memory even after removing the battery and the DC adapter and then plugging these in again.  One time I must have waited long enough and the computer came back on.
I've removed all viruses and maleware with multiple programs.  It seemed to me to be something associated with power, maybe some fluctuation in power coming from the DC adapter, but I saw no indication of power variation in other electrical apparatus in the house.  I had thought it was something that would happen when I moved, but today it shut down sitting on the table when not being disturbed.
Do I need to replace the computer which is probably after 2.5 years off the warranttee?

Another idea: Forced shutdown due to overheating. Have you recently cleaned the system fan or have taken a look at the CPU/GPU temps[1]?
The Nvidia 140M alone is producing a lot of heat. And isn't the Intel C2D T9300 running even hotter than e.g. a T7500?

  • IBook G4 blacks out without warning

My sister has an iBook G4 and she tells me that she was reading something on a website and that out of nowhere, it just blacked out. She describes it as "like when someone turns off an old television". I have also tried turning it back on, but that didn't work. I checked the battery and it was at two dots, so that isn't a problem. I don't think that there's anything wrong with the hard drive, the memory, or even the display. I just don't know what happened.
Please give me anything to help fix this problem.
Thank you in advance for any answers.

    Hello,
Sounds to me like the logic board has failed or the DC-inboard.
The only option you have is to take it to a Apple repair shop for further diagnostics. Some places including the Apple Store may not look older Mac's now. Really depends on who you see.
Without me physically looking at it, I can't really diagnose it other than being a possible logic board failure.
Sound like you have tried all you can to power on the iBook.
Any further test would require the unit to be taken apart.

  • Why is CPU maxing out 100% when burning dvd?

I bought premiere elements 13 yesterday and got my dvd ready to go. I started burning it today and it's been over an hour and still processing, it may have taken 1.5 hours total. Trying to run photoshop at the same time was making photoshop very slow so I checked resources I saw premiere was using 99% of my cpu, even after closing photoshop. When the screenshot was taken it was at 93% encoding and dropped a little. I have an i3 3.4gz dual core and have never seen it go above 50%, and even that was just a spike. The system also has 8gb of ddr3 ram on windows 7 64bit.
The dvd burning appears to be done but the program won't respond, it's now fluctuating between 0-5% of my cpu but is still not responding. It doesn't have the actual not responding, program frozen error, and makes me wonder if it is done burning.

    digitaldoodlebug
Thanks for the reply and considering the comments.
Please remain with the "Fit Content to Available Space" option with a check mark next to it.
The only time that I disable that option by removing that check mark is when I get a Data Rate error message which forces me to remove that check mark so that I can manually set the Bitrate to lower value to enable the burn process to proceed.
783 MB at 1.69 Mbps (megabits per second) is definitely the lowest quality bitrate set. The maximum bitrate in Premiere Elements burn to is 8.00 Mbps.
If you are using a standard DVD disc (4.7 GB/120 minutes), in reality that 4.7 GB is 4.38 GB for your disc capacity. The Premiere Elements burn to DVD uses a variable bitrate which means that your max 8.00 Mbps will vary across the DVD being produced.
If you are seeing a No Disc error in the mix, that is another matter...there is a known error in 13/13.1 which requires deletion or disabling of the OldFilm.AEX file. This has been written about here a lot.
    Local Disk C
    Program Files
    Adobe
    Adobe Premiere Elements 13
    Plug-ins
    Common
    NewBlue
and in the NewBlue Folder is the OldFilm.AEX file that you delete or disable by renaming it from OldFilm.AEX to OldFilm.AEXOLD.
So, please look at that, leave the check mark next to Fit Content To Available Space (if 8.00 Mbps is much less than 8.00, then consider a Double Layer Single Sided DVD (8.5 GB/240 minutes, in reality 7.95 GB).
We will be watching for your progress. Any clarification needed, please ask.
    Thanks.

  • Mac logs out without warning, and displays no error message.

Hi. I hope someone can figure this out.
I'm using Mac OS X Version 10.5.6, and it is relatively new (Bought sometime last fall, O8).
Within the last month, I've noticed several occasions where I will log in, and before I do anything, I'm immediately logged out. What happens is that a blue screen (not of death) appears before I'm brought back to the login screen.
There have been no error messages whatsoever on the matter.
It doesn't usually log out immediately, however. Sometimes when I login, then try to open Safari, or iTunes quickly, I'm kicked out. Maybe I'm overloading something, but I used to be able to open up applications quickly before.
I've searched for answers, and have only found one case of this happening, on Mac Mini.
I suspect it may have something to do with software or components I've downloaded, since it began happening after I became full of myself and began to download like crazy.
The Disk Repair Utility didn't help much, and I'm too new/young/inexperienced to understand Console Logs, so if someone can identify the problem, explain it easily, or anything like that, it'd be appreciated.
Also, if you need anymore information, let me know.
    Thank You.

It's still happening, and it is starting to become a serious nuisance. I seriously apologize for all of these bumps, but I need answers.

  • IMac CPU maxed out on nothing??

Can someone explain this to me?
My iMac's CPU has been pegged for pretty much two days now and I have no idea why???

Nevermind...Just found it.  Curiuos by F@H is running at full bore in the background but not showing in the panel.

  • Maxed out CPU Usage, happens suddenly, no obvious cause, please help!

I've had an XServe-G5 running well for about 18 months, with anywhere from 2-5 active users at one time. The server is only running AFP, Software Update & FTP services.
For the last 2 months, without warning, the CPU usage will max out, with only a small amount of disk & lan access with it.
I've found a less than ideal solution . . . . the cpu max out seems to be linked to 1 or 2 users logged in at one time, but not always the same users, if these users disconnect then the CPU usage returns to normal. I haven't found a way to identify which user/users it is, so I disconnect them through 'Server Admin' one by one till I get a result.
This goes on up to 5 times a day. I've checked the AFP access log when the problem happens, but can't see anything there that isn't there normally, the error log has no events. When there are no users logged in, other than the local 'Admin', the problem does not occur.
We've resorted to only logging into the server when needed, but it's getting to be a major pain.
    Please help!

Many things can cause this. What do you see in "top"?
One example is when you hit the "corrupt .DS_Store" bug in AFP. See afp548.com for a discussion, e.g.:

  • Beginning of song play causes iTunes to max out CPU and rewrite library

I'm experiencing a strange problem with iTunes for Windows. Whenever a song plays, about 5 seconds after it starts, the CPU maxes out for 20-30 seconds. This occurs either when the next song plays in a playlist, when I manually start a song, or if I've paused a song in the middle and start playing it again. I used a process monitoring program, and it's not the iTunes process that maxes out the CPU when this happens, but the system process, and when it happens it always shows that it's writing to three files, sequentially in this order (with the first two being written to twice):
    1) [iTunes Music Folder]/iTunes Music Library.xml
    2) [iTunes Music Folder]/Temp File
    3) [iTunes Music Folder]/iT.tmp
    4) [iTunes Music Folder]/iTunes Music Library.xml
    5) [iTunes Music Folder]/Temp File
The "Temp File" has no extension. This is a really annoying problem; it's been happening for about two days, but I can't think of any associated system change. I'm running Windows XP SP 2 with iTunes 7.0.2.16. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I do have a very large library--about 6000 songs. However, it's been that large for a long time, with no problems. It seems like it usually just updates the library when it closes. If it's been doing it on every song play before, it hasn't been taking 30 seconds, but something so small that it doesn't show up on my process monitor, which I'm constantly paying attention to.
It doesn't seem like this is a hardware problem, but some setting or something that got changed to make it rewrite the entire library every time I edit it.
I did check the Windows Event Viewer and couldn't find anything helpful.
A couple other things that I've changed recently that could have an effect:
    1) Yesterday I set a bunch of songs to not come up on iTunes shuffle; before I hadn't used this setting.
    2) I attempted to make iTunes treat some mp3s as podcasts so that it would remember their play position. In the process of doing this, it decided that it wanted to re-download all of the back episodes of a particular podcast I subscribe to. I then figured out that you can set particular songs so it remembers their playback position, and instead just added those mp3s normally and set that option.
I unset the "don't use this song when shuffling" option for all songs, and also deleted my subscription to that podcast, to see if those things would have any effect, but they haven't. It seems like the podcast thing has something to do with this, though, because I think the problem started around the time that I tried that. Any thoughts?
