[SOLVED] DNS stops working

Hi!
I'm running arch64 on my Thinkpad x220 and have a strange problem here.
Sometimes DNS just stops working, to rule out a bad Server I tried it with the one of Google:
dig @8.8.8.8 archlinux.puzzle.ch
On Archlinux dig tells me that no servers could be reached, although I can successfully ping 8.8.8.8.
Running MacOSX on another machine in the same network, dig gives me back the matching a-record.
This usually lasts from a few minutes up to about two hours, only on archlinux. Does somebody have any idea on this?

You are right, the manpage says 'dig @server query' but it seems to work either way. Maybe you can try 'tcptraceroute 8.8.8.8 53', it will probe tcp port 53 directly, although not the same as a "normal" dns query that will use udp [1] it will be quite close.

  • [SOLVED] xmonad stopped working properly in mid-session

    I recently installed xmonad, and after using it for a few hours, Mod-Spacebar stopped working so I rebooted Arch. After rebooting and using startx, xmonad starts but does not open windows with Mod-Shift-Return and the only command that works is Mod-Shift-Q to quit. My xmonad.hs file looks like this:
    import XMonad
    main = xmonad defaultConfig
    { terminal = "xterm"
    , modMask = mod4Mask
    , borderWidth = 3
    I have no idea what I changed to make this stop working. If anyone could figure out what's going on, it would be much appreciated. If more information/logs are needed, please let me know. Thanks for your answers in advance!
    EDIT: I reinstalled xmonad and rewrote xmonad.hs, and it appears to be working correctly.

  • [SOLVED] checkgmail stopped working

    Anyone seen this?
    CheckGmail has stopped working.  No tray icon (checkgmail is in startup programs), and when I start from command line, I get the following output.  I'm used to the warnings about packages not found, but the "Possible unintended interpolation..." line seems new.  Any ideas?

    I'll double post because this background problem seems to be affecting a lot of people over the internet. And i've found a fix ! yoohoo !
    I've jst found a copy of checkgmail edited by someone, i've diffed the version and other than a few line to give due credit in the beginning and the edit (which actually only consist of changing one word on a certain line) there are no differences, so it should be harmless.
    You can find the file on this page, just look for the comment posted by Corona, download the attachment, make it executable with chmod +x then move it as root to /usr/bin after removing the .txt extension.
    If you don't want to bother, you can edit the existing checkgmail executable, go to line 579 and on the line
    $eventbox->modify_bg('normal', Gtk2::Gdk::Color->new ($red, $green, $blue));
    replace $eventbox by $ebox2 so the line should be:
    $ebox2->modify_bg('normal', Gtk2::Gdk::Color->new ($red, $green, $blue));
    I wanted to create a wiki article abuot checkgmail to include those various fixes, but I don't really know how to create one, plus they will most probably be fixed anytime soon so maybe this thread should be enough...
    Anyway, I hope that helped someone, it sure helped me at least !

  • [SOLVED]Commands stopped working

    Hi guys,
    Some commands like reboot, export and daemon launchers stopped working on my system.
    I can't sudo them and the usual "su" doesn't work neither. The only way to make them work is by doing "su -".
    Any ideas on what's wrong?
    Thanks

  • [Solved] WebGL stops working randomly in Chromium and Firefox

    Hi
    I'm using a Thinkpad x220 with an Intel GMA 3000 chipset, using the xf86-video-intel 2.99.912-2 driver for X11 and mesa 10.2.4-1 for OpenGL.
    OpenGL is detected and working fine locally, glxinfo lists it, glxgears runs as do OpenGL-based games.
    Yesterday, I updated my graphics drivers and now WebGL is not working most of the time.
    When I open http://doesmybrowsersupportwebgl.com/ right after starting X11, it shows 'Yay' and lists the details of the WebGL capabilities of the browser. However, when I refresh the page a few times and/or restart the browser, it stops working and shows 'Nay'.
    I will try downgrading the packages to see if this is actually related to the update (I never consciously used WebGL before so the issue may have been there for a while). I also tried fiddling with WebGL/GPU-related settings
    chrome://flags
    (Chrome) and
    about:config
    (Firefox) but that had no influence whatsoever and since it works sometimes I don't think it's a browser isseu.
    What could be the cause of this and where should I look for clues? If the GPU crashed, X11 would crash as well, wouldn't it? Can I make error messages emitted by the graphics driver appear in the Xorg log files? Did anyone here have a similar issue with the same chipset or not have the issue with a different setup?
    Thanks very much for any responses!

    For all the folks who might run into the same issue: The problem was that the environment variable
    LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1
    is being set by compiz, my window manager (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour … comments/4. Now, when I start any program, such as a terminal or a browser, from compiz using key bindings, direct rendering to the graphics card is disabled and so is WebGL.
    The fix was to disable 'Indirect Rendering' using either Compiz Fusion Icon or by setting the env var before compiz starts.

  • [SOLVED] Amarok stopped working (after downgrading from kde4)

    Hey,
    I played around a bit with kde4 (from tardo's repositories), then uninstalled it.
    And now - amarok stopped working entirely.
    When I type "amarok" in the terminal, I get:
    amarok: error while loading shared libraries: libkdecore.so.5: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
    So I tried setting it up manually in "/opt/kde/lib", and typed:
    ln -s libkdecore.so.4.2.0 libkdecore.so.5"
    Still no luck. Now the file exists:
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 2008-01-22 21:35 libkdecore.so.5 -> libkdecore.so.4.2.0
    but I keep getting the same error message.
    Any thoughts?
    thanks a lot,
    fiod

    I'd say it would be a bad idea to be symbolic link things like that, but it might work since I have libkdecore.so.4 linked to the same thing.
    What version of amarok do you have? I have 1.4.8-2 which is the newest in the extra repositories. If you have something else it might have gotten pulled in from testing or a kde4 repository.  Maybe try reinstalling amarok-base

  • [SOLVED] Keyboard stopped working after upgrade

    When Arch boots into the login window, keyboard has stopped working (it works in the boot screen, tested with Caps Lock). The mouse is working. I have installed Arch to a laptop and configured Arch to use EFISTUB to boot. I have already confirmed that the kernels and initramfs' in theESP (Arch's kernel, initramfs and fallback are in /boot/efi/EFI/arch. ESP in mounted as /boot/efi) and in the /boot are the same.
    I don't see any FAILED messages during the boot screen.
    Here's the Xorg log: http://pastebin.com/qXwqR3vf
    And lxdm.log http://pastebin.com/DF9bF4R8
    I am running the linux-lts kernel.

    This was caused by a simple reason: keyboard file "en" was missing in the xkbcomp directory. That's od because I haven't touched keyboard settings at all. I changed the keyboard setting in X11 confiure file to "us" as test and now it works.

  • [SOLVED]Automount stops working in Gnome 3.2

    hi,
    This is my first post on the forum i hope someone will help.So as the title says removable disks aren't automounting anymore in my Arch Linux system.This might have been due to a recent upgrade but I'm not sure.
    I can mount it easily using udisks or mount commands from the terminal and it also automounts when I tried using a udev rules configuration file from the Arch wiki.
    but Automount is supposed to work by default in gnome.So i'd rather restore the original funtionality than solve the problem with a workaround.So please help me solve this issue.
    Other possibly relevant information:-
    DE: Gnome 3.2

  • [SOLVED] Ethernet stops working after a while

    When I work on this computer, the ethernet stops after a while, sometimes this is after 2 minutes, sometimes after half an hour. When I do
    sudo /etc/rc.d/network restart
    everything works again for a while. The internet doesn't work in chromium nor pacman so it isn't just one application.
    Anyone knows how I can find the cause of this?
    Thanks already!

    Also, tell us about your network.  Are you plugged into a corporate or school network? your own private router? into a DSL or Cable modem?
    When it stops, what is the output of ip link  ??
    of ip addr  ??
    of ip route  ??
    What is the make, model and chipset of your NIC?

  • [SOLVED] Keyboard stopped working after update

    Greetings,
    after my most recent update (I now update infrequently, so I had quite a bunch of packets to update) I experienced my keyboard refraining from working in any way under my desktop environment (KDEmod legacy) - switching to console, the keyboard works again.
    I did a few downgrades (info from /var/log/pacman.log) and it now works again.
    [2009-02-18 13:47] upgraded xkeyboard-config (1.5-1 -> 1.4-2)
    [2009-02-18 13:47] upgraded xf86-input-keyboard (1.3.2-1 -> 1.3.1-1)
    [2009-02-18 13:48] upgraded xcb-util (0.3.3-1 -> 0.3.2-1)
    Are there any known problems occuring concerning these packets? They seem to change the way, XOrg is accessing the keyboard, which is obviously not working.
    Thanks for any advice on this matter!
    Regards,
    cg
    // EDIT
    Solution: xorg-server was amongst the IgnorePkg list as in pacman.conf - updating xorg-server together with xf86-input-keyboard, input devices work like charms again.

    Thank you for your contribution. I tried my best to configure my input devices conform to the new XOrg hotplugging, but I have to say that the problem persisted.
    Step 0:
    Updating all packages (again). Conclusion: Not working.
    Step 1:
    Copying the keyboard configurations from /usr/share to /etc for persistent use by HAL. Conclusion: Not working.
    Step 2:
    Commenting out the lines referring to the static declaration of input devices within /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Conclusion: Not working.
    Step 3:
    Adding the command to disable the hotplugging (Option "AutoAddDevices" "False") on bottom of my xorg.conf. Conclusion: Not working.
    Step 4:
    Downgrading: xf86-input-keyboard (1.3.2-1 -> 1.3.1-1) Conclusion: Working again.
    Guessing by the fact that more than one person posted in this thread, this problem seems not to be limited to my specific configuration (which is rather basic, a basic keyboard and a basic mouse, both using USB). For now, the 'solution' is adding xf86-input-keyboard to the IgnorePkg list of pacman.conf - or is there any known workaround?
    I would be glad to be informed about wrongs in the steps I have taken.
    Thanks for your information in advance,
    regards,
    cg
    // EDIT
    Problem resolved. The solution was stunningly obvious - after having run into problems with the upgrade lately, xorg-server was on the IgnorePkg list as well and defaulted to 1.4.2.2, which would not work well together with the input hotplugging. After having solved the problem with XOrg and updating all the packages again, I can happily use my keyboard again. Sorry for all the hassle!

  • DNS Stopped Working -- I'm confused!

    Ok. I read numerous articles (Hoffman Labs included) and have posted previous discussion threads on various versions of this issue. I feel that I have a somewhat functional yet growing knowledge of the proper setup techniques. I had my public facing DNS setup and functional for over 2 weeks on my OSX server. All of a sudden, this morning, the hostnames were not resolving. Other sites being hosted on this server but DNS zones handled elsewhere are functional. (ie. aplusducks.com)
    ; <<>> DiG 9.6.0-APPLE-P2 <<>> waterengineltd.com any +multiline +nocomments +nocmd +noquestion +nostats +search
    ;; global options: +cmd
    **NO RESULTS**
    traceroute returns "unknown host"
    1. I restarted the services: Web, NAT, and DNS. No Luck!
    2. Restarted the entire server. No Luck!
    2. Using Hoffman Lab's "DNS Tips: Establishing a DNS Server on Snow Leopard" and "Public DNS, Public IP, and Remote Server Access" articles removed all DNS zones and started over.
    Existing "starting over" settings:
    QUESTION: What am I doing wrong if anything. Previously I did not use the ip address in the Nameservers:->"nameserver hostname" fields. All sites resolve fine on local network problem is connecting from outside the local network.
    Thanks in advance for the help.

    At the top domain .com the NS's for waterengineltd.com must either be referred by IP numbers or by another domain NS's by name that is reachable by IP numbers.
    (What came first - the hen or the egg?)
    (I don't know how this was found without the correct info above so maybe that info is right but:)
    host -v -t NS waterengineltd.com 108.77.55.234
    Using domain server:
    Name: 108.77.55.234
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    waterengineltd.com. 10800 IN NS ns0.waterengineltd.com.
    waterengineltd.com. 10800 IN NS ns1.waterengineltd.com.
    host -v ns0.waterengineltd.com 108.77.55.234
    Host ns0.waterengineltd.com not found: 3(NXDOMAIN)
    Received from 108.77.55.234#53
    Same for ns1.waterengineltd.com
    Seems those NS records are missing
    And the reverse for 108.77.55.234:
    host -v 108.77.55.234
    Trying "234.55.77.108.in-addr.arpa"
    ;; ANSWER SECTION:
    234.55.77.108.in-addr.arpa. 6000 IN PTR 108-77-55-234.uvs.rcsntx.sbcglobal.net.
    Should work though...
    Also
    dig ns1.waterengineltd.com
    ;; QUESTION SECTION:
    ;ns1.waterengineltd.com. IN A
    ;; AUTHORITY SECTION:
    waterengineltd.com. 10800 IN SOA ns0.waterengineltd.com. ->
    dns_admin.waterengineltd.com.waterengineltd.com.
    there is probably a "." missing at the end in the DNS GUI at mail address for the dns admin : "dns_admin.waterengineltd.com" (should be "dns_admin.waterengineltd.com.") - without the ending "." it will add the second "waterengineltd.com."
    HTH

  • [SOLVED] USB stop work after suspend (only right ports!!!)

    Hi,
    It drives me crazy!
    I recently installed Arch on my new laptop SAMSUNG NP900X4C that have 3 USB ports, one in the left side and two in the right side . Oh crap! I am kid with his new toy...
    After a lot of google it I read something about firmware control the wake up of USB 3.0 and when I entered in this laptop BIOS what I found?! This option disabled:
    USB S3 Wake-up [Disable]
    So, just enable it and all my USB ports go back to work after suspend. I don't understand the purpose of it disabled by default.
    Anyway I am sorry for this newbie mistake.

  • [Solved] Backlight stopped working after upgrade

    Hi,
    I've been using Arch for a couple months now, and I had set up the backlight by adding the acpi_backlight=vendor kernel paramter.
    I recently upgraded my system, and everything seems to be working, but now the backlight is set to some default value and doesn't change. My /etc/default/grub still has the kernel parameter in it.
    $ xbacklight
    100.000000
    $ xbacklight -set 50
    $ xbacklight
    100.000000
    Here is the kernel I've upgraded to:
    $ uname -a
    Linux choochootrain 3.8.5-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Mar 29 19:18:14 CET 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    I don't know much about mkinitcpio.conf, but upgrading the kernel didn't change any of the modules being loaded..
    Does anyone have any idea what else could be causing this? Let me know what other information would be useful here!

    I upgraded from 3.6.9.1 -> 3.8.5.1, and I have an integrated Intel video card
    $ lspci -v | grep VGA
    00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
    I tried removing the acpi_backlight parameter, but no luck.
    My laptop is a Toshiba Portege z930, so there are vendor specific entries in /sys
    $ ls /sys/class/backlight
    acpi_video0 intel_backlight toshiba
    which I assume is why the original acpi_backlight=vendor worked.
    Do you think this could be a kernel specific issue? I may end up downgrading until I can resolve this, as the backlight is blindingly bright right now

  • [SOLVED] Networking stopped working

    Hello, so this happened yesterday morning. I couldn't connect to wifi at school, but didn't think much of it as things like this sometimes happen (could've been problem on their side, or simply weak signal) and I wasn't using laptop later that day. Today, at home, same problem and LAN doesn't work either.
    Now I know it's not just temporary, or even hardware issue. Phone can connect to router wifi without problems and live distro on laptop works well too. The only thing I can recall doing prior to this problem, is system update, altho everything seemed to work fine right after..
    Network interface info shows that both interfaces are down, but turning them on does nothing.

    Dmesg output after trying to connect to wifi shows 'Reason: 3=DEAUTH_LEAVING', which brought me to one topic on this forum. Trying few methods from there didn't help.
